    Hi Magic,

Gorgeous photo. Love it. I am having a new patio installed and because of the weather report the guys didn't come today. Well surprise, no rain all day. So I was able to have a fun day out and of course some of that time was out with my camera. I went back for more butterfly pics. It is funny because the swallowtail that I took and posted the other day has some missing parts to it's wing at the bottom. I swear this same butterfly was back. Boy am I getting picky. I wanted a butterfly with perfect wings. LOL It was a pretty windy day and I was disappointed that many of my shots were a little blurry. I have some eyesight issues too which doesn't help. I will see what I have got. There were tons of kids at this arboretum today because this is the last day of their summer vacation and there is a huge Lego display which I posted some pics on the bird watching thread of some I took. Of course everyone that saw this butterfly whipped out their cell phones so it wasn't quite the photo shoot I had imagined but still fun.

You will have to share how you captured your tulip shot.

Nancy: The tulip shot was taken with a 180 mm macro lens which I have not used as much as I thought I would because I must use a tripod and finding just the right focus takes me a lot of time. First I shoot free hand so I have an idea how close I want to be then take it to tripod and try, try, try to get it focused properly. I'm trying for the shapes I like rather than the idea tulip. I took your butterfly photo and cropped for design going from left to right diagonally. Once I took a Miksang Contemplative photo workshop and still enjoy finding some essence of my subjects. Thanks Lisa. I like your butterfly pendant. Where is your landscape pic from. It looks interesting. It looks like it might be a pond. Very nice.

Magic, thanks for the info. I have contemplated a macro lens but I have heard stories that some people after buying one end up not using them very much. If I really thought I wanted to concentrate on macro photography I would certainly invest in one. I am still experimenting with different things to find what I really enjoy. I will have to look up Miksang. I have never heard of that. I don't know if I would have known that was a butterfly if I hadn't been actively looking for the tiger swallowtails recently. Very pretty.

Band, I took the picture in Alaska but it was just a small tiny crater in a rock. It is by the Mendenhall glacier.

I am not into macro much. Just cropping pix so only part shows. Like flowers.

Lisa: Don't you just love finding little hidden gems like your pic of the Mendenhall Glacier area. I was there quite a few years ago and would love to return.

Nancy - sure to hear you about how frequently one uses a macro lens. I'll let you know if I ever post it on Ebay :)

I know Alaska has beautiful scenery. That is a neat scene. Love the rose. I went back for more butterfly pics and the monarchs were dominating today. At one point there were three of them dancing around my head and this man said I must be attracting them. There were so many kids there (obviously not all districts have started yet) and so much traffic I think the tiger swallowtails were a bit shy. I thought today would be very few people. This Lego display at the arboretum has certainly been a popular thing so there have been many, many people.

Nancy: The butterfly image is so sharp from tip of wing to end of antennae --had to check the spelling of that word :) Will there be lots of fall colors at the arboretum?

bandwoman. . .beautiful pix. I have been looking on Amazon for the right macro lens extension for my camera. Next month is blue morpho month at nearby garden's butterfly center. I hope to get there for a some pixs in early Sept.

Thank you ladies. This is really the first opportunity I have had to take a lots of pics of butterflies and lucky enough to find a place that they have been around every time I visited. I am in the practice stage with butterflies and I am shooting everything in manual which has proven to be very tricky with things that won't stand still and the light changing every time the sun would come out even though this is a fairly shaded area. There were hummingbird moths there too but those things I just could not get in good focus. Their wings were just a blur. There were big bumblebees there too so I had to be careful not to upset them. A screaming lady with a camera running away from a bee would not be very attractive!

Yes, this place offers a wonderful fall color display so I will have to get out there for sure in the fall.

I will have to post some more pics of the monarchs. I got several that turned out pretty well.

Very nice. I think my 1 butterfly in the yard is tired of being the one model being photographed. I love the flowers too.

Scottie, very pretty set. Sorry if you talked about this before but how did you get your set of pics together? I know Lisa uses Picasa for her collages. My Photo Shop Elements collage is not what I want. I don't have a macro lens either and debating whether I want one or not. When I took the butterflies at this local arboretum I didn't pay attention to the name of the flower (they label everything) which looks the same as your pink one. What kind of flower is that? The only issue with these flowers is they are planted in a big section that backs up to a wall so there are not many choices of angles to shoot. I could probably find this answer in my many handouts for the photography workshops I took this year but I do have a question which you more experienced photographers might have an easy answer to. When the butterflies are going from one flower to another I can experiment with a few different F stops and with the help of the light meter get what I want. However if I keep the same settings and the butterfly flies right in front of me where I am zooming back in a bit my pics come out completely overexposed. I thought I had been pretty diligent watching the light meter and maybe I missed something obvious but could you shed some light (no pun intended) on this for me. The only thing I can deduct is that the shorter focal length is letting in more light and therefore I need to adjust to compensate for that. Am I on the right track in that thinking?

Lisa, I feel like I need to pay for the butterflies time in posing for me. LOL

bandwoman. . .I also use Picasa for my collages. I just bought Photoshop Elements 13 and have not had time to play with it. Hopefully this fall. I started DSLR photography years ago so I could photograph my daughter's soccer team and others. I'm now on my 4th Canon (70D) and have several lenses. Haven't had enough time this summer to experiment with my new camera but it goes up to 12,500 ISO so gives me way more options in low light and action photos. I usually just shoot in Aperture mode, use the lowest F-stop for my particular lens and play with the ISO. I almost always go with auto-focus and sometimes shoot in rapid mode particularly with soccer. My cancer threw a huge wrench in my ability to photograph my daughter during her college freshman year. She's very good, is a starter and plays most or all of each game. Can't wait since the 70D is so much faster.

The flowers were my purple butterfly bushes, two different varieties, which I don't remember and the white cone shaped tall hydrangeas which get tipped with pink in our soil. I really should keep a better list of all our plants We add so many each year.

Thanks for the info Scottie. Before I took all these photo. workshops I mainly was taking pics in Aperture priority too. This teacher really emphasized the use of spot metering and all the technical things that go along with that in his philosophy which require using either exposure compensation in Aperture priority or the light meter in manual. I have tried to stick with that in my practicing after these classes. I need to go back to this place this week and try AF and see how that works with the butterflies. I didn't think the flowers in my pics were butterfly bushes. Now I am curious. I have a Nikon D90 which is not a full frame camera. I have had a neck surgery and the weight of the typical full frame camera is just too much for my neck so unless they come out with a full frame in Nikon that would be very much lighter I will probably stick with the cropped frame sensor. I know the mirror less cameras are out there but I haven't really had any motivation to get one. It sounds like photographing your daughter playing soccer is a lot of fun. Hopefully you will get to get out there to photograph your daughter with your new camera soon. It sounds amazing. Your daughter must be very good at soccer. Thanks again.

Thanks Joanne. I was just talking with a friend last night about those flowers and I said it looks like the old fashioned phlox we grew up with and she thought so too. So maybe that is what they are. It is hard for me to be objective on some of these. I like the Tiger swallow tails because I think they are more rare in our area than the monarch but that may not really be true and only my experience. The contractors are coming very early tomorrow to move my fountain where I wanted it so I need to get to bed now. Hope you are doing better each day.

Lisa, I love the Pandas. They have been in the news the last few days with a baby in DC and I think China. They had some video of the individual babies sleeping. So adorable.

Lisa: Sharing only the panda pics would have been great, but adding those captions that turned the pics into a story was awesome. Bummer about being a kitchen prisoner on a lovely California day. Enjoy those clean carpets.

Magic, glad you enjoyed the pandas. They are so much fun to watch on a day when they are out and not many people pushing to see them. When I go to the zoo, I generally only see one or two of the animals and spend more time than rushing to see everything. It's nice to be a member so I can go often. The zoo is practically across the street from my medical care at the Navy Hospital. So that's my treat after an appointment. ☺
