Lisa, I hope you aren't still sitting in your kitchen! Neat bird shot!

Magic, yes I love my new patio. I need to actually sit on it now! I have used it for my tons of flowers in the past.

I went out to practice on butterflies again. My teacher would croak at the blown out flowers but I liked the furry part of the body. I found out these flowers of a type of phlox which I sort of thought but now do know for sure.

bandwoman. . .awesome shots. Did not know there was a humming bird moth. Can post the specs to that last pix (Iso, f-stop, shutter speed and iens, i.e., macro)?

I was playing with some camera settings during dd's preseason scrimmage yesterday and again got the best shots in aperature mode with just tweeks to ISO for sun variations.

I have a date with dh to go to the gardens and photograph the blue morphos so I want to try some pics in manual mode.

    Thanks

Nancy: I have hummingbird moths here, but mostly see them at dusk. Great shot!

I'm going to be heading north to Alaska so will be signing off for a while unless I get good internet access. Stay well and keep photographing!

Thanks Lisa. I remember the first time I ever saw one in my flowers I had not seen a hummingbird up close and I didn't know what it was. I didn't think it was a hummingbird but I was sure. Somehow I came across it online when I was trying to figure out what it was. They flit around like hummingbirds and those wings are really fast too.

Thanks Magic. I hope you have a great time in Alaska. Don't forget your camera!

Scottie, thank you. Hope you have a great time at the gardens with DH. Yes I will be glad to share all the specs.

    I am using a Nikon D90 DSLR with a Nikor lens 18-200mm 3.5-5.6.

    Manual mode and manual focus

    F13 Aperture

    1/160 sec Shutter speed

    ISO 200

200 mm (since it is a cropped sensor equivalent to a 35mm focal length of 300mm)

    No flash

    Spot metering

    White Balance auto

The workshops I took with this pro were all about spot metering. There is a whole philosophy about that which I can't cover in a post. If you are not used to using spot metering and you want your pics to turn out well I would not suggest using it unless you have already gained some experience with it.

Good luck. When I was out in the field in the winter months where it was absolute freezing but I needed pics for this class I got so annoyed with my auto focus. It was searching around for the subject and I was freezing. That is when my teacher suggested using manual focus and I have pretty much used that ever since. Prior to his workshops I did almost 100% of my pics in Aperture priority and knew very little about shutter speed as far as actual experience manipulating it. Now I constantly use my light meter and that is where the knowledge in adjusting that in manual mode with the spot metering is what I am practicing now to really get a handle on it. He was all about using a tripod but obviously you can't really do that with these subjects and the location I was at which was a very public place with a lot of people going by. Hope that helps.

Nancy, I did. Thank you. Going to have to wait till Sunday to photograph the blue morphos but may try some manual shots. Today I got some good shots during my dd's preseason game. This is my favorite. I call these my Nike Air shots of dd. I have several similar from different games.

Over 40 years ago I started taking pix of soccer matches in the 35mm days and I couldn't figure out at first why some of the shots were not so good..then after a second look, duh.....when the soccer ball wasn't in the shot it didn't make any sense...so I learned. But one funny story is we took some old movies too and then bought what was new a video recorder back when they were huge. I put it up on a tripod to shoot the game and sat back down...so my friend and I were chatting waiting for the game to end..I brought the tape home and popped it into the player and started it...much to my chagrin, I had not remembered that it also picked up audio and all our gossip was there to be heard.

Joke on me..anyhow I quickly stopped the tape and erased it. I guess there is a lesson there or two or three.

We'll dd's soccer schedule put a wrench in my trip to the gardens to photography the blue morphos so they will have to wait for tomorrow. However, since I was home, I did get a rare opportunity. Both our Heron and Egret showed up together at our lake today. Still not the best focus because these two don't trust me enough to stand still long enough to really get close. I have to take my pixs quick and hope for the best. I have never gotten them in the same pix before.

SoCalLisa. . .I got my first DSLR after paying a "professional" photographer to get shots of my daughter during a game. DD was11 yrs and while she got a few good shots, I knew instantly that she had photo shopped the ball in. They were using a yellow ball or similar during the game and the ball in the pixs was perfect white with no dirt or grass on it. I paid $60 for 3 5x7 photos.

So I got my own camera and started shooting games by following the player with the ball. Of course you can take 300 digital photos for free and trash all but the best. I love photographing sports but it's not my day job and I fight for time to edit them. Also I really like photographing nature. So tomorrow's venture is to try and get some "money" shots of blue morphos at the gardens.

P.S. We've done the same with trying to get some videotape of dd on the field. Some of our recorded comments were colorful. Lol

The digital cameras came out way too late for me to take the kids sports pix.We simply couldn't afford all the 35mm costs of taking enough photos., but I did get quite a few. But also for 13 years I was my kids little league coach so I didn't have time to take pix from the dugout.

Times have changed for the better!

Woke up to pouring rain and no power this morning, but all was not lost. Early afternoon we finally set out for the gardens (about 1.5 hr. drive). Spent a wonderful hour in the butterfly center chasing Blue Morphos (Brown and spotted on outside, beautiful blue on inside).

Scottie, what neat pix of your daughter, the egrets and the moth. How fascinating with the colors. Just beautiful. Sorry that you woke up to no power. Is that all part of the hurricane?

I woke up this morning and found out one of my Monarch pics was chosen for the newspaper photo contest. I had submitted a few of my pics and am what they call a weekly winner. There were two other pics as well trom other people. Last year I was a weekly winner and then the big winner for the month of August and got a gift card and the whole nine yards. They did an article on me and my cancer story. That is what ignited my passion for photography so my cancer did have a silver lining for sure.

No wonder you wanted to make a trip for these moths. I don't think I have ever seen one even in a picture and yours are so beautiful. Hope your power came back on. Have a great week.

Nancy congrats on your newspaper award. I used to enter pixs in the local fair each year. Won a few awards for various categories. I also used to make decent extra money photographing soccer games. No time now with my current job which I love, so photography is back to a weekend hobby. I did do senior photos of a friend's daughter this summer before EX and they came out great.i Beautiful girl and fun to photograph. I hope to do more senior photos this year and my 19yo tomboy soccer player dd now wants me to take some College photos with her hair and makeup done.

Scottie, was that Callaway Gardens you were at?

Lisa, I must admit I am envious of that. We don't have the luxury of the ocean front in the Midwest. Beautiful.

bandwoman. . . Yes that was Callaway. We love the lake/beach there in the summer, Have gone to some of their concerts and go to special events.

Lisa. . .miss the shore. I'm thinking ahead to a trip in 2-3 years back to England and Scotland to photograph everything from castles, ancient ruins, lochs, cliffs and shorelines.

Scottie, when we live in Spain for four years, we couldn't afford the film and printing so photos were at a premium .I sure wish we had had digital back in the seventies..you will be so happy

SoCalLisa. . .I totally know what you mean. I still have rolls of film I never developed from my last trip. . .overseas internship. Too expensive to develop and print. Also the rolls I printed sre still in boxes somewhere. Digital is just so much fun and saves tons of money. I can take 300 pictures and if I get one "money shot" which I can enter in the fair or just share, I'm happy.

SoCalLisa. . .those pics are fantastic. I showed dh your earlier ones and now these. He's a huge maritimefan from Charleston.

Tomorrow night I hope to try out my new camera on Fireworks. The 4th of July fireworks show for the park we're going to did not work. Some major power failure or something since they are set off in the middle of a big lake. So they rescheduled and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Good luck with the fireworks..I hardly ever get to see them anymore..

    Put them up here...

Glad your husband likes the ships...I do too..maybe having been in the Navy has something to do with my love of the sail.

my friend with me is a real photographer..she had a lens 18 inches long to take pix and a huge camera..but I just use auto Some of the problem was all the extra speed boats roaming around.
