Rainny- my recipe is from an old Pasadena Junior League Fundraiser cookbook called Pasadena Prefers. It was very widely circulated at the time. So much so that when I lost it, I was able to replace it via Amazon used. It has a lot of vintage 50s and 60s tailgate and appetizer recipes featuring cheese whiz and the like. It's entertaining from an anthropological point of view. The ginger cookie recipe is the only one I use, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was "lifted" from MH.
Beppy- thinking good thoughts for you. And yes, Tutti is sleeping on one of the favorite-ist quilts I ever made. It is huge. It is what they call a dissapearing 9-patch pattern, and I added a piano key border. It was too large for me to quilt myself, so I sent it out to be done on a long arm machine. So it looks very nicely finished. 😝

oh dear, hope the sinus crud clears are found in those
Back from gym and lunch with a pal, nasty back is better today, so hoping to get to travel ready soon
Actually in the pondering stage as to how to blow my tax return. How the back is doing is a major point but day dreaming is fun
Keep those cookies away from me, they are far too tempting, the best of classic things are always in those sorts of cookbooks and I love to read them

Better couple of days. Hoping my rheumatologist doesn't want to address my weight also.
My Reclast infusion was uneventful with no SEs, first follow up since receiving it.
My appt tomorrow is for MMJ card certification. I am hoping this can replace both my Ativan and Effexor. More immediate relief and plant based. I like that combination.

Robin, I didn't bother with a rx, since good quality mj is easy to get around here...but I found (find) mj to be much more effective for both nausea and anxiety than Ativan...took the ativan once and went right back to the marijuana. A little goes a long way for me but it really helps.

Rain, when I was a kid my parents bought my sister & me a jr. membership at the B’klyn Museum and Botanic Garden. In late winter, we learned how to start houseplants from cuttings and re-pot them; then in March as soon as the ground thawed we moved outdoors and were given our own little mini-plots on which to grow veggies from seeds & “sets:" radishes, carrots, onions, cabbage, green beans, lettuce. We fought a constant battle outwitting the wascawwy wabbits. My plot was by the fence, overlooking the open-cut Franklin Shuttle tracks. The wind would blow carrot and radish seeds down to the tracks, and it was fascinating watching them nibble between the rails and then hop out of the way of oncoming trains (and manage to avoid that third rail). By May, we’d begun to harvest, and would bring our haul home on the New Lots IRT line. We lived above a beauty parlor, and at the sight of two little kids in dirty-kneed Wranglers bearing cabbages bigger than our own heads, the patrons would melt. We would clear easily twice our allowance every Sat. afternoon.
My MO won’t sign an MMJ card application for anyone except those who are Stage IV or in danger of malnutrition from chemo-induced anorexia & nausea. Supposedly, there are docs in some of the dispensaries who can sign an app, but I read the apps online and noticed that in order to get one, you have to acknowledge you know that regardless of state-level legalization, possession is still a Federal felony and that you hold the state of IL harmless against any damage to your freedom or livelihood in the event of a Federal bust. I don’t know how much various agencies communicate with each other, but I’m wary of being “blackballed” from applying for TSA’s Global Entry program (or even ending up on the no-fly list) and facing possible disbarment for declaring under oath my intent to violate Federal law. Complicating matters is that smoking it is likely to exacerbate my asthma (in fact, it probably triggered its onset back in my younger & wilder days), but the Chi. area dispensaries don’t carry the edibles--just smokables and vapables.
I know we’re supposed to stay away from politics here (dunno why, since religion is not only not a taboo topic but the subject of myriad Discussion Board threads), but I think we need to ensure the election of enough House & Senate candidates in favor of Federal de-criminalization of MMJ to constitute a veto-proof Congressional majority (bipartisan). Although the DOJ has declared they will not enforce simple possession laws in states where MMJ or recreational possession/use is legal, that can turn on a dime depending on who is the AG (which depends on who is Pres.). Just sayin’....
Sinuses can go ballistic during storm season when the barometric pressure rapidly dips. (It can also be an LE trigger). If it clogs your inner ear and causes vertigo, symptomatic relief can be had by taking meclizine OTC (“Bonine”). It also helps combat nausea. If you don’t have glaucoma or hypertension, decongestants work too. (If you have those two conditions, try regular snorts of saline spray). Antibiotics work only if the sinusitis or otitis is bacterial rather than viral--and during allergy season it usually isn’t even infectious. Nosebleeds can be a symptom of hypertension getting out of hand--and if you must take baby aspirin for cardioprotection, that might trigger them. Saline nasal gel or a humidifier can keep the nasal mucosa from drying out and bleeding.
I never did get into “Downton Abbey,” but it is taking every ounce of self-control these days to keep from binge-watching “House of Cards” (Netflix’ annoying tendency to buffer does help bolster my discipline). I’ve been able to hold myself to no more than one episode every other day. It’s only gonna get worse when the next season of “Orange is the New Black” is released. Wish they didn’t release the entire seasons of these shows at once--and especially that they didn’t auto-start the next episode w/in 30 sec. of the end of the preceding one. (Amazon is guilty of that too). I have some series (“Blacklist,” “Shades of Blue,” “American Crime”) backlogged on my DVR, and I need to keep it at least 20% clear. There are some shows I won’t delete--“Treme,” “The Newsroom,” and “Vinyl”--because I know I’m going to want to revisit them. Wish it were possible to dump stuff off onto DVD-R to free up space, but DirecTV won’t allow that. (And I’m too cheap to buy seasons of shows on DVD).

My "green card" is severely underutilized. Hmmm, maybe after this bone scan tomorrow, I have a whole month where I don't have to see anyone. I already have some edibles, so maybe I will. If I come here and write crazy, then you will know!
I just don't know how I would have made it this far without each one of you crazies. A lovely assembly of terrific folk.
Katy, there is a cook book that my mother had/has , I remember she kept her few cookbooks in the bottom drawer of the first kitchen I remember. It had the most lovely strange looking photographs, almost like paintings. It's called ' The American Woman's Cook Book.' I know this because I actually found my own copy at a thrift store here! It has those cut outs on the side like old dictionaries used to have, an index I guess it's called, for different categories. The same jade green cover, altho it apparently had sustained some damage in some woman's kitchen perhaps? I just like owning it, altho now that we have talked about it, I better find one recipe to try! Okay, just got it out, it says, it was published for the culinary arts institute in 1942. This picture is not from there, but I will take pictures later, have some while you wait!

I've been hanging in the tree house... Thanks for the cookies Katy! My friend, Glynn, had his first chemo today for the stomach cancer... I went and sat with him for a couple of the hours he was there. The "after" rads fatigue has hit me hard, so I couldn't stay the whole time. It was just as well, he go sleepy with the chemo, so I ducked out... It was rather a surreal thing to go into the infusion center and not have an infusion... I'll be there Monday for my Herceptin, but it was weird... The docs told Glynn they can't do anything about the brain tumor until they see if the chemo pushes the stomach cancer into remission, and since they found the spots on his lungs, they'll be watching that closely, too.... it was an emotionally exhausting day. I'm taking my cookies, my cafe mocha valium vodka latte w/ativan sprinkles, and going to the little bedroom at the top of the tree house. That way I can enjoy the light breeze, and look at the stars while falling asleep... tomorrow should be brighter...
Love to all of you beautiful crazies... prayers for all of you going straight up from my heart!

I've been starting indoor seeds today and I'm trying a batch of carrots in a container! The weather is rainy and windy but I'm staying occupied.

Katy: I'll take a slice of the bread, if there's any left over. What seeds did you start?
0 -

I'm doing seeds in a couple of waves. Right now

More to come. I need to wait a little longer but I will later do more herbs, jalapeños, yellow and orange bell peppers, tomatoes, determinate and indeterminate, heirloom (natch), grape tomatoes, bush green beans, melons, ( an organic, early, canteloupy kind) beets, broccoli, yellow crookneck squash.i think that's it
I will direct sow some fun cut flowers, cosmos, money plant, bells of Ireland, black eyed Susan, hollyhocks from a friend's plant.

Recipe please! I am weak for bread...weak weak weak!

Molly-Rainny started all this bread business here, haha. She posted one awhile ago, and I think this one is very similar. Based on Tom Lahey's. I like this link because it has a lot of discussion and pictures for help, and several suggestions for variations.

Katy: bread just popped out here, still warm from the oven! (the CrazyTown tubes are like that). For me, alyssum (white and purple), snapdragons, cleome, cosmos, a few flower mixes, chard, basil, and in a fit of hopefulness, lobelia and pansies. And lots of grubbing around in the dirt, with smutz on my face, to help me keep out of the rabbit hole.

sounds lovely. I was in the hole a long time this time. Hoping I'm done with subterranean living for awhile.
Smutz is a very effective antidote. The rabbits hate it!
ETA: yes to alyssum! Heavenly fragrance. It looks like some I left outside in planters may be coming back!

well hello! I just joined this evening and thought I needed to be able to talk and maybe get feed back.! So here goes, I am 51 years old, married, have 5 daughters and am also a grandma. I had a mammogram done in 2004 , years go by, a complete hysterectomy 6years ago, a brand new hip 2 years ago, and some other unrelated medical probs also through the years.. I have been on hormone replacement therapy already going on since 2010 two pills a day of Premarin. 0.3 and 0.625 which balanced me out very well. I have lost 60lbs in the last year and a half. Without trying..dr.found my Premarin Way to high. So she lowered it.and scheduled me for a mammogram three weeks ago.i did that, the results came back as having abnormalities and significant changes in breasts..today I had ultrasound....I saw the pictures of the last mammogram .the right breast has three spots that are white with spiderwebs on them and one spot on the left breast also white with spiderweb thing ...sorry don't know the wording for that..also she ,the technician spent over 45 minutes using the ultrasound and taking pictures of black ovals , circles and other. Weird looking objects, clicking pics and measuring, so I guess I will hear within the next two weeks what is going on. My question is.i have very sore breasts and have the Milk let down feeling going on all day long and my right upper arm aches does anyone else feel this, just wondering? I will share my results with you when they come in regardless of the outcome,,I am not nervous or stressed at all, but very very curious,
!Talk again soon! I'll keep in touch. Good luck to all, And would love to hear from someone else in the same predicament! CHEERS Sylvia in Prince Edward Island Canada

Good morning, crazies!
Welcome, Chickadee! You have had some medical adventures, to be sure. You're welcome to hang out here as long as you like. Many of us find this place warm and inviting, and certainly a refuge from Dr. Google. Let us know when your results come in!
ChiSandy, I know exactly where your garden plot was. I used to go there when my boy was little, and we'd spend ages looking over the edge of the garden onto the Franklin Ave. Shuttle (nothing more exciting than trains!!). One of my friends is now the director of the Children's Garden at the BBG; I'll have to tell her your story!
Katy, that's some awesome food porn. Here's the way to tell if we have the same ginger cookie recipe: does yours call for ground black pepper? I'm deeply envious of your garden, btw. Good job! And there's something very harmonious about spring and the call of the garden pulling you out of the rabbit hole, eh?
Beppy, any word? H*U*G*S!
Tomboy, I've got a few of those cookbooks from my grandmother's shelves. A bunch of her best recipes seemed to come from the little pamphlets issued by food corporations, i.e. 100 ways to use crisco. I love the line drawings of '50s housewives with their New Look skirts and bras out to here!
Proud, let us know if you need suggestions for spending your windfall!
Speaking of which, I finally got myself fitted for proper bras and protheses. After surgery, there was the radiation, and after that, there were the burns, and it has taken this long for my skin to feel healed enough to consider this. All winter, I've been hiding under turtlenecks and scarves and the inserts that come in coobie bras, which are perfectly appropriate since I was only ever an A cup. But it's time! Bonus: the mastectomy products shop is around the corner from a bunch of korean restaurants. So I get to wear tank tops AND get my fix of ethnic food at the same time! (Still mulling over reconstruction, but the RO says not for several more months.)
Love and spice and a spectacular day to all crazies!

ooo. One of the great things about NYC is the choice of restaurants, where I live my choice is italian, Chinese and oolall else takes searching but coo
Warm day, wonder if I should change my wardrobe yet

iris, I feel your pain on lack of restaurants. I am in the same boat. Rain, send some Korean food through the tubes please! Along with some of Katy's bread! Thanks so much...
I am having a tough, tough time at work. In the midst of a political battle not of my making (my boss had something to do with it..) and besides the politics to deal with I am working way too hard and feeling way too unappreciated. Retirement is looking better every day. Then I'd have time to harvest hubby's garden!
Thinking of all of you, back to work...

🐙🐙🐙-Octo- so sorry about your knees.
Welcome Chickadees! Sorry you are here but glad you found us.
Rainny- no pepper in my recipe but is does call for crisco ahahA!
Very disappointed in the morning so far. Have an ongoing, intractable ant problem in the house and I don't want to use any bug spray. I've been keeping things clean, no food or sugar out. They were all over the cabinets, counter, walks and floors on one side of the kitchen. I used windex to kill them.
Then I looked outside and saw last night's huge winds knocked over and apparently destroyed my greenhouse. It's in a tangled, twisted heap on the ground. I can't even look at it. While I was dashing in and out wringing my hands, Tutti caught a bird and brought it alive in the house. Which is better than dead, of course. She lost her grip on it and was trying to get it back up on a high windowsill in my bedroom (which she ascended to in one effortless, muderous leap!) and I screamed at her and threw a shoe at her. Barely deterred her. I got a sweater to rescue the poor thing and saw it was a lovely woodpecker. I adore woodpeckers! It's a good thing I had the sweater, because it had quite a beak and was using it in self defense.
I gently grabbed it and took it out to the front deck, (cat now in back yard) and put it in some high bushes where it could catch its breath. It's little heart was beating so hard I thought it would die of heart failure. There were no apparent wounds and not the usual spontaneous release of feathers.
It almost immediately flew off, high and strong, across the street into a wood. I'm hoping it's ok. I'm so mad at Tutti I could spit. I know she's only being a cat, but why can't she focus on rodents?
Arrrrggghhhhhh ..... What a morning!

Argh!!!! onc office just called and said, even though I'm in menopause, my Estradiol number is very high so she now wants me to take Tamoxifen instead of Arimidex... I wish they'd make up their minds!!! This is so frustrating... I'm glad I haven't started one of or the other yet! Waiting on the onc to call me herself...

Jersey, well I guess it is a good thing you haven't started anything yet! How very frustrating for you. Katy, I am so, so sorry about your greenhouse. I bet you are crushed. Good for you rescuing the bird from your kitty.
0 -
I want to kill that kitty. The handyman checked out the greenhouse. It can't be saved. It was left by the previous owner, stocked with tomatoes ready to harvest. But I might have to pay to have it hauled away. Boohoo.

Well today is the first time I heard a stage. I never labeled it. They probably said because of the skin mets. Even though it was locally. Was not good. Obviously. Crap! I don't know I have such bad anxiety. Pulse is up. Anyways thanks for the uplift. Going in hole for abit. Until biopsy.
