QMC- thank you! Just found several used online by her. So I can sit on the deck and drool too!

Also check out 'A Surti Touch' by Malvi Doshi: focus on Gujarati cooking. Outstanding.

Octo- done. I don't mess around. Live to read cookbooks.
Out of curiosity, are the standard ingredients (other than turmeric powder) readily available? Or must I Go tothe spice market in Mumbai?
All of these books have FANTASTIC reviews. I'll be able to have Sula for dinner as soon as she gets that monkey off her keyboard!
0 -
For Madhur Jaffrey, yes: the majority of her recipes do have readily available ingredients, or she suggests alternatives. (though that said, I'd suggest starting back to front, with her more recent books) But don't let that stop you from traveling to Mumbai. off to check out Doshi.

Jack,
a book I love is Lord Krishnas Cuisine, it's a totally vegetarian cookbook and one of the first I got 25 yrs ago.

just a quick drop in cookbook queens.
Sula Lord Krishna's is a classic!
And Katy depending As QMC said most will be available but for fun you could also check out kalustyans on line. If you are in to food you could get Into Real trouble there!
Ok I'm off to make our dinner now. More crazy later my friends ( and boy did I go there today)
Hugs

Stop making me buy more books, ladies! But at least its a healthy life-affirming kind of crazy. (Husband and I each have a room for our books.)

hah, Queenmomcat, I also have book rooms, not to mention cartons unopened in the garage from my last move...which is bad since it has been about six or seven years.
If any of you are in or ever find your way to San Francisco, make your way to Green Apple Books on Clement for the best selection of cookbooks ever!
Katy, at least here in CA, it is sometimes surprising how many towns, even smallish towns, have Indian grocery stores. If you look around you might be surprised to find one near you, where you can get whatever won't be at the grocery.

Good Evening ladies of Crazy Town. I hope everyone had a great Sunday
Katy - I would love to have smelled the cornbread! Funny I had listed skillet cornbread on my late summer dish notes- like to add fresh corn while it's around. Also dear KAty be gentle with yourself; it's not about 'getting right'. As the wise Dr. Lu suggests there are no accidents we are all simply in the process of growing more profound!
Queen and Octo I am a book collector too, but in this last move, I actually went through almost all of my books, even ones stored at my mom's since college and let go of many of them. It actually felt good for me, but rest assured I am slowly adding some fresh materials.Tomboy my website ( still woefully unattended to) is www.rasalife.com. Sula do you have a food /cooking site?
I think that's all the bandwidth I have tonight- struggled a lot today with feeling that the circumference of my abilities ( physical) have been so abruptly squeezed tight..... definitely sad and scared and feeling somewhat helpless. Here's a snap of the condiments for tonight's 'mezze' inspired dinner. It was already dark and so not so in focus here.
I hope everyone feels at ease and rests well.

Sula, I LOVED devil dogs as a kid, and was so disappointed when we got to CA and found out you can't get them here! Is that what you do when you have writers block??? I'm all for irrational behavior as it pertains to laptops. There are times I'd like to fling mine out the window.
pennysgal,That is awesome news!! I'm so glad the beast isn't in your nodes!!! Happy dance!!
That's a tough choice on whether to have a mx or lx. I made all of my treatment decisions based on minimizing infection. I had a history of poor wound healing. There is a very informative section on BCO that lists the pros and cons. Here is the link:
Katy, it's nice to know I can bring all my dreams to you for interpretation!! You are wiser than you'll admit, I'm sure. I'll add the title of Interpreter of Dreams to your cape. I don't remember most of my dreams, and I have been known to sleepwalk in the past. When my daughter was little, she would cook in her play kitchen and be fast asleep. It was pretty freaky. This stuff must run in families, because my son also had a sleepwalking problem. His was more frequent than my DD's. I was told my aunt jumped from a second story window while sleepwalking. It has gotten better since I've aged. I always wonder if that's the reason I don't sleep very well.
Your Jack is a sweet boy.I recently saw a video of a therapy dog comforting a woman in hospice. She couldn't see and rarely woke up, but she seemed to get comfort from petting the dog. He was so loving to her. She passed away a day after the visit. Here is the link for anyone that is interested.

It's a moving video. I'm sure your Jack brings comfort to many. Dogs are amazing.
SpecialK also recommended a book for me and it's helped considerably. I'll have to check my Kindle....I can't remember the name. She is so good to all of us.
hahaha Alyson, I was thinking the same thing about ME being the village idiot. I may need an interpreter for the interpretation.
Octo, I know many women have continued working while going through chemo. You can try it and see how you feel, and make your decision at that time. It could be a great distraction if you're feeling up to working. It's great you have so much flexibility.
PTS, I hope your tummy is feeling better.
Rose, same here with the brain. I should buy stock in post-it notes. I can't function without them. So very sorry to hear about your mom. It's difficult enough going through treatment, losing your mom on top of it all is just too much.
Italy, I nominate you to be our exercise guru. Did I already do that earlier??? I lost track!!
staynsane, Welcome to our thread!! I love your name.....staying sane in Crazy Town - is that possible??!!! haha I can see I'm going to need more chairs!! Has anyone been nominated for decorator yet???? We SHOULD have a decorating column don't ya think??? Invisible tether that weave and bind.....beautifully said. So fortunate your employer was so supportive. I agree with your statement that strength and passion come from adversity. I think we also gain compassion.
Chloesmom, I'd like to also welcome you to our crazy thread!! I loved that statement regarding your husband. It amazes me how a life event like the one we are all facing, can simplify so much in our lives.
Wendy3, So glad you found us!! Welcome!! It has been a busy weekend here with the crazies. I'm finding there are more of us out there than I thought. I hope you find comfort from the shared stories. Pull up a chair and get your crazy on!!
gaia, such kind words. Thank you!
queen is howling at the moon??? What did I miss??? Did we get pictures???
Tresjoli, Great news on your echo!!! YAY!!!
PoppyK, Save travels on your way back home. Hope you and your family are having a great time!!
M0MMY, those minions are so cute!!
Tang, anything on the rash?? I still haven't taken pictures of mine. I'm afraid I will have to shave first. haha Mine doesn't look like a rash though. It just looks like tiny red dots....almost like red pen dots.
Sapphire, A few more days of chemo!! woohooo!!
Ducky, thinking of you!!
Lucy, Hi!!
Tomboy, ツ!!

hey crazies,
Gaia,I do have a cooking site.. I have had it for about 6 yrs The Colors of Indian Cooking I have about close to 50,000 visitors a month and have been writing for cooking magazines the last couple of yrs. this started as a hobby but now it's turning into a money earner, ( very small but I get really stoked about it) back in LA I cooked for a lot of visiting Indian dignitaries, including the Dalai lamas monks. So that's my hobby.
Tres,
Congrats on the great echo!!
Queen,
If you gotta howl at the moon... You picked a good one!
Welcome to all the new citizens of Crazy Town Chokesmom, Wendy, staynsane, !! What happens in Crazy Town stays in Crazy Town.
Sapphire,
So glad you're almost done with chemo. It's amazing how this site has grown so fast.
Slow,
As soon as I make those devil dogs I'll send you some virtual junk food! Instead we got invited to a dinner party last night by friends who are opening a new restaurant so I brought them something made with the chocolate they manufacture and now they want me to make them for their place. I think I'll just consult as I don't have the time to switch careers to pastry chef...here's the mocha cream tart with chocolate crust... Also gluten free

oh god Sula you've done it again
You're killing me already!
That would be death by chocolate porn. A state of excitement leading to stroke, heart attack or cancer of the imagination.

Oh my!!
Sula, you're just 20 kinds of awesome!!
I'll be waiting patiently for my slice.

You know, this California girl, born and bred, had never heard of devil dogs...google tells me it is a kind of a snack cake like a cross between a twinkie and a hostess cup cake maybe? is that right? What do they taste like?
Gaia, sending hugs and love and hope that tomorrow is a better day for you and for all of us...though I don't think we could outdo Sula's Death By Chocolate porn!
xoxo

Death by Chocolate sounds better than death by toe nail cancer! Never heard of devil dogs. I'm native Californian, I know Dodger Dogs.
Slow, have a wonderful visit with the Endo. You're working your way thru the specialty directory, too? I see the sweetest Endo at UCLA. Wish all my docs were as human as she is. In your pocket. Promise not to tickle you.
Sorry I can't keep up with all the banter. but wish everyone a good week full of Indian food and no sleep walking. Jan

Jan and Octo,
I'm a 5th generation Californian never even seen a Devil Dog! But, I'm married to this New York guy who misses some of that stuff and he and his friends were just reminiscing and asked if I'd make done. This is similar around our house to the Black and white cookie adventure of last year... Of course those I knew from Canters!

This is a Devil Dog.
It's made with devil's food cake with white cream in the middle. When I was a kid, I would smoosh the cake into the cream on both sides and lick the sides first. Then I would take off the top and eat each section like an open faced sandwich. Ahhhh the memories!!

Just dropping in.. I'm so annoyed.. I have had the root canal done twice on my tooth.. But it started getting hurting again.. Have an appointed for tomorrow, but think they will have to pull it this time.. :-( .. Life wasn't meant to be easy.!
0 -
JAN, Thanks!! Yes!! I am collecting specialty doctors. Nice to know I'm not alone!!
Oh no Lucy!!! We will be in your pocket tomorrow!!! I hope all goes well!!

Thanks Slow.. That image is SO comforting to me 😃

Lucy,
Thinking of you tomorrow....I have to see the dentist too, as a tooth is bothering me too.. So hoping it's no big deal. Are you on Prolia Lucy? That what makes me worried about the dentist
Ah Slow!!!!
I am so sending you a picture of these things once I make them!

Hi Everyone!
I'm back from my long vacation, which certainly wore me out. Had a great time with my family in NC and visiting VA and DC. A million ants moved in while we were gone. Guess they were searching for water. This thread sure is busy! Hope I can catch up on the posts soon. I checked my calendar and I'm soooo lucky to have an appointment with the endocrinologist on Tuesday to discuss the nodes on my thyroid and my blood test results. I'm working my way through the specialists and hating it.

Got tired just reading all that so I forgot what I wanted to say. So just "in your pocket" to those with non-cancer issues, in particular the teeth--my dentist's receptionist got terribly nervous when I mentioned "undergoing radiation for breast cancer, is that going to be a problem for my teeth-cleaning?" (It isn't, according to the RO.)
Throat still sore from the howling, but glad to get that out of my system. Now back to cooking. And crazy.

Lucy, so sorry, will be with you also! and also in the pocket of those with other doc apts...
The devil dog looks a lot better than the google pics I found....can't wait to see Sula's version.

Hi Poppy! Good to see you back. I hate ants. We use those Terro traps and they work really well. Sorry you came home to unwelcomed guests. What a coincidence - I have a nodule too!! What's up with that?? Just like hip pain we all get nodules on our thyroids??? Very strange.
queen, I had my teeth cleaned before chemo and right after rads. I didn't have any problems. I did wait for x-rays though until my next visit. That was my choice though.
Gaia, Thinking of you. I know you have some things coming up this week. We are all in your pocket!!
hahaha Sula! I will drool over the pictures, I'm sure.
Hope you all have a pain free day!!

Thankfully, this is going to be just a cleaning and my rads are to my breast only--I didn't have to be axillated--so no impingement on my neck. Though I'll be up front with the dental practice when I go in! Dental imaging is a kinda bit deal for me, as I've got a gag reflex the size of Cleveland, but thankfully both dentists and the oral surgeon are proactive about settling that. ****ing in the chair makes an impression on them.

thinking of all of you in the dentist chair... For any reason. But how especially annoying for you, Lucy. I now have gas or IV sedation. I just can't stand it- had seven filing and a crown done right before chemo started. It was a better experience for me personally. All done in two hours, no lasting SEs. I just hate the dentist. Unreasonable fear. So though I watch my money carefully, this is a necessity, not a luxury.
Christine, in your pocket this week. I'll try not to make you giggle when they are telling you to be still.
We had lovely rain all weekend and I see some gardening in my future this week.
P
Calling all crazies. Please insert your self and your coffee/teacup here on the table and let's have a nice morning chat. Hugs to all.
And needing one of those smell-a-links here (blue link should be here
to smell this wisteria that just re-bloomed)

.gee, now of course it will be hard to remember stuff! Tummy is feeling a bit more normal now, thanks for asking. complements of the little purple pill
Love all the Indian recipes! My cleaning gal was just saying she was trying to learn to cook Indian since she had a horrific allergic reaction to some take out Indian Food but loves the food. Gonna pass on Sula's site to her.
Life is better since my back is not so nasty so will not need the dang pills that messed up my tummy, or at least I hope.
Devil dogs, of course I know about them here but they are one of those no nos for someone who is always on a diet
Hoping all have nifty Labor Day plans, I hope to get out of town to visit family (now did I already mention that? gads if I did but the memory is gone!

Since it's Monday, I thought we could all use a show tune!
This is how I feel about all of you.
