well, I've been hovering on the Crazytown border the past few days...as I am not totally happy with how my MO visit went Wednesday. MO said everything looks great, and that I am doing well....but I felt rushed, and wasn't sure he was really listening to my concerns about letrozole, especially the fact that my blood pressure has been inching up. He dismissed my concerns about my bp, saying 'that has nothing to do with me.' My understanding (maybe I am wrong?) is that hypertention is a known (though not common) letrozole SE, although apparently it strikes only a very small percentage of patients. He implied, but didn't really say until I pressed him, that exercise or lack thereof is a much more likely culprit. It is true that my exercise levels are down, mostly because I was unable to swim for a while post knee replacement (and swimming is my favorite exercise). On top of that, I walk, but walking has gotten more painful as I wait to get the second knee replacement in a few weeks. So yeah, he is probably right, but why did I have to press him to get his answer? Why did he have to make me feel a bit stupid? (I am many things, but stupid isn't one of them).

He did acknowledge my other concern: research is starting to show a connection between letrozole and retina damage in some patients. It is a small number of patients but this is a particular concern for me since I already have significant non-treatable retinal damage in one eye (a large blind spot) thanks to a pre-bc injury. I am seeing my (world class) ophthalmologist in April, so he just asked me to ask the eye doc about it and to keep him in loop and have the records sent, and to let him know if my vision has changed at all. (I don't think it has, or if anything it has gotten a bit better, which can happen as the brain adjusts to retinal injury). Eye doc sees me once per year, mostly just to make sure vision isn't getting any worse; I may ask eye doc if I should/could see him twice per year under the circumstances. Anyway that much was fine, at least I was able to remind MO that my vision is a concern...but still, the entire visit felt unsatisfactory.

No following apt with MO scheduled until July, with a mammo scheduled in the interim: by then I may be mostly moved to my new place in Reno. If anyone knows a good MO in the Reno/Sparks area, please PM me! I have been happy with my MO, but today, not feeling it...it may be time to contemplate a switch.

    Sigh. Wish I could just not worry. Don't we all? Hugs to all;

    Octogirl

Had PT evaluation on Wed. night. They said that I would be greatly helped by PT and they started me off with a few exercises I could do at home. So far no constant pain!

Great news, M0mmy! Octo, since you are moving a change might be in your future anyway but I wouldn't right off your MO for one bad appointment. I had two years of bad appointments!

Octo, hypertension is also a SE of aging--mine began at only 42! Talk to your FP about it. Re: the retinal damage risk--think I'm going to make a one-year followup appt. with my ophtho, both to discuss that and get refracted to see if my prescription needs a tweak. (If so, there go all my Zennis and my three Warby Parkers--since lens replacement isn't offered by Zenni, Warby Parker has a $295 upcharge for progressives--and that's in addition to the basic lens replacement cost; and the indie optician a couple of neighborhoods northwest of me charged $150 for lens replacement in a pair of rimless drill-mounts (maybe it's cheaper in conventional frames). I'll probably pick only my favorite glasses to get re-lensed at first.

Molly ...glad you are feeling better !

Octo ...so annoying when you feel you're not being taken seriously 👿 I'm sort of torn between thinking you should ditch him , and Molly's suggestion of giving him another chance , if he's been good previously..maybe he was just having an "off " day ?

I haven't read a book in such a long time ..but the last few months have been reading my way through Marian Keyes books ..Am off to buy another one today...

Octogirl, my sister just moved to Sparks. She is a breast cancer survivor also. Maybe I can ask her. Heading down to see her next week. Are you there already or just on your way? I've been busy moving but just an hour from my home. But still a six month process! Hate it. Must be the good housing market, we are all making our moves.

Iris, hope your ankle continues to get better!

Mommy, glad the PT is helping!

and Lucy, hope the traffic Gods were smiling...

eggroll: right now I am back and forth between my old home and Reno, so could see a MO in either place. My next apt isn't scheduled until late July. Molly may be right that I should give current MO another chance...However, if your sis has any good tips, definitely open..feel free to PM me! Thanks for the offer.

just finished all the pre-op stuff for my second total knee replacement surgery (left knee this time), scheduled for 2/13. All was good, except that they found a bladder infection when they ran pre-surgical lab tests. I haven't had any specific symptoms (and no fever at all) but: I have felt sort of cruddy with no real explanation, ever since I returned from Japan. I attributed it to jet lag that I just couldn't shake: I expect it is/was the infection. Doc put me on antibiotics and I should be fine by surgery date. Yet another reminder to listen when things 'just don't feel right'....

    Hugs to all.

That's why the hospital where I had my first TKR assigned me a "perioperative" physician. I'd thought it was redundant to the pre-op testing I got from my PCP, but a peri-op doc zeroes in on conditions that the testing revealed which could affect the success of the surgery, the ability of the patient to endure it, and might cause complications post-op. In my case, the peri-op doc noticed I had a "crowded airway" and sent me for a sleep study to rule out sleep apnea--which could have affected the administration of general anesthesia and impeded recovery. Elevated glucose could raise a red flag, and a peri-op doc would request a hemoglobin a1c to manage the patient's blood sugar (usually elevated post-op, but could be dangerously so for a diabetic); or borderline or mild anemia would put the peri-op doc on notice to have extra blood on hand. Second time (different hospital, same surgeon), the pre-op work didn't indicate anything that would have necessitated calling in a peri-op doc.

That makes sense Sandy.... Obviously, they want to get it cleared up before the surgery....glad I've got two weeks to get this all worked out. Surgeon didn't seem at all worried, he said he'd see me at the hospital on the 13th, and had me pick up my post-op Norco rx, so I guess he assumes all is a go....

Doc did mention that they cultured it and found the strain of bacteria was resistant to Bactrim, so doc prescribed Cipro.I've never had Cipro (for that matter I can't recall ever having had a UTI, either), but the list of possible awful side effects would put anyone in Crazytown! Fingers crossed, so far after one pill all is well....

I was allergic to the sulfa component of Bactrim (bright red & itching all over, spiking a fever) long before I developed an allergy to Cipro. In fact, for nearly 10 years Cipro was my go-to antibiotic for anything that normally would have required one of the penicillins. But then along came that stupid rash. For most people, Cipro works better and more transparently than either the 'cillins or sulfas, with fewer GI problems than the tetracyclines or cephalosporins. (PCN-allergic patients are usually cross-allergic to Keflex, but not I...not yet). Besides, unlike Keflex, Cipro won't make your medicine cabinet smell like rotten eggs. And Flagyl? Ugh. Bob had two bouts of that and not only couldn't he drink (had to buy alcohol-free toothpaste and mouthwash), everything he tried to eat tasted awful. But not sure what I can use for a UTI in the event I get one--would the few I can still take work?

Cold again today. Windy & warmer tomorrow. Snow Saturday, overnight into Sunday, then plunging back into the deep freeze. (Naturally, Sunday is when we have to walk to the neighborhood restaurant's private Super Bowl party because driving would be foolhardy, given the potent potables in unlimited supply).

But I did manage to find Shingrix vaccine--at a supermarket in an adjacent suburb. My L upper arm is really stiff and sore, but it sure beats getting shingles. (Add to that, though, my sprained L wrist that refuses to get better, and I have a none-too-useful L arm for the next few days).

Ask your MO if it's okay to take simethicone (Gas-X). I'd also steer clear of cruciferous veg, green peppers, onions and anything carbonated for awhile if they're causing you gas you have trouble passing.
