octogirl- congratulations on the new house. A fireplace on a patio sounds nice. The wildfires in California our horrific. What has occurred in Paradise is unbelievable. Those poor people have been through so much.

We close on the house January 15th: it could have been a little earlier but the sellers didn't want to have to move over the holidays, and we are fine with that. However, once it closes (what you'd call settlement, Lucy :-)) we are going to replace the carpets in the guest room and office, and possibly paint the interior, so we might not move in until February. I've heard that getting the trades out to do work is slow here, especially in winter. We can stay in our rental as long as we need to, so no problem there. Can't wait to get to it though!

Hi jo and Di, thank you for thinking of us. My other kids are handling their grief pretty well. My oldest is very helpful and goes to the cemetery with me. Octo, congrats on the new house. Jo, where do you run your 5k?

octo-it will be worth the wait. You are lucky not to be rushed out of your rental. Today is my h&p day. They moved it from Friday to Tuesday due to the Thanksgiving holiday. It's nice to get it over with.

Molly ...so lovely to have your eldest to go the cemetery with . When my mum passed unexpectedly ( I had just turned 21 ) my Dad , two sisters and I went together to the cemetery every Sunday with flowers for a long time ..and it helped us all...Then one day Dad said we should go and buy a special vase for our own homes for Mum...and that was a great idea because we could put some flowers in her vase whenever we wanted too.

I guess you are all busy planning / cooking for Thanksgiving ...Any special side dish recipes to share ???? I can smell the turkeys and stuffing cooking from here :-)

Just the standard stuff here. Was going to make my maternal grandmother’s Cranberry Relish this year, but I discovered I had one too many cans of cranberry sauce, so I am trying to use that up first. Maybe I’ll make it for Christmas instead

I did my Thanksgiving dinner with friends 2 weeks ago. I made three side dishes tonight to take to a friend's house for dinner tomorrow. I made macaroni and cheese from scratch, cranberry orange Walnut relish and sweet potato puree with pecans and marshmallows. I don't eat any of these foods but I love the smells of Thanksgiving and Christmas.

hi lucy! I am doing ok, thanks for asking. No new health crisis this week! Have discovered the wonderful benefits of saltine crackers! Do believe they work better on tummy upsets than the dang pills the docs give! Course i am following the news about new jersey changing laws regarding marijuana, never been a smoker but these days just might think on it.

personally, I think saltine crackers (which I relied on heavily during pregnancy morning sickness!) and marijuana (which helped get me through chemo, both because it reduced my anxiety and for help with nausea) are two of the best solutions to nausea out there (although the drug Emend is pretty darn good too)... the best part: no interactions between the two, so you can use them together! (and you will want to do so when you get the munchies :-))

I am visiting relatives in San Diego, where the weather is really close to perfect. Getting lots of beach walks in, which makes me think of you, Lucy. And California being California, I had an interesting experience at a local farmer's market, on the subject of cannibis: a local vendor was selling CBD soap. CBD isn't psychoactive, but supposedly helps with arthritis pain...so curiosity got the better of me, and anyway, the soap looked pretty and smelled nice, so I bought a bar. So far, can't tell any difference, though getting my knees replaced had already eliminated the biggest source of arthritic pain for me...

IL has had legal MMJ for 3 years, and I just got my ID card last week and registered at the local dispensary (you are limited to only the one you designate on your card application). The "budtender" asked me all sorts of things: what I do, what was my active cancer treatment, where am I in terms of survival, what were my goals in using MMJ, and whether I had any respiratory issues. When I told her I'm a singer with asthma, she said that smoking could set off a bronchospasm and vaping can irritate the throat--so she was on board with my instinct to rule out both modalities. (Besides, it's been so long since I last toked--3 decades+--that I have no idea which end of the joint to light and which to puff)! We settled on edibles and transdermal.

The edibles are 5mg ("microdose") all-THC (chocolate-covered espresso beans and blueberry-flavored dark chocolate) and 1:1 THC:CBD gummy squares (10 mg, cut them in half), and CBD blueberry syrup (for mixing in seltzer and a dollop of limoncello). They threw in a free 24mg. Indica gummy, which I may try if neuropathy pain keeps me awake. The transdermal is a CBD gel pen that dispenses 2mg per click on to the wrist's pulse point--unlike a purely-topical, it actually gets absorbed into the bloodstream (bypassing the digestive tract, unlike a tincture or edible). It has 5% THC (unlike the store-bought CBD oils from hemp, which contain <0.3% THC), but not enough to be psychoactive. We decided to hold off on tinctures, because they recommend holding them under the tongue for 15-20 minutes (not seconds, as the CBD oils recommend) and I make so much saliva that it'd be impossible to avoid swallowing too soon. The only oil they carry is RSO (Rick Simpson Oil)--a formula devised by Rick Simpson for cancer treatment, which has not been proven--and besides, it's more for Stage IV patients looking to complement their medical regimen or mitigate the side effects. (It's not recommended as an alternative treatment). And it's crazy-expensive. They also carry CBN capsules--CBN is the sedating compound in marijuana. Might get them purely for sleep.

Unsalted saltines were the only thing that got me through morning sickness almost 35 yrs. ago. Kept a bowl of them at my bedside and ate one even before getting out of bed. Flattened (stir with a fork) ginger ale and ginger chews (or a nib of crystallized ginger) help too. Children's Emetrol (flavored) is good.

lucy- I enjoy the cooking very much. I don't find cooking stressful. My parents had 8 children Plus all the children's friends. Cooking for a large group of people was natural.

Iris-glad to hear you are feeling better

lucy- my Mom has 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandkids and 2 great great grandkids. Today is her 84th birthday. She did not want a party. So she cooked Sunday dinner today for proximately 50 friends and family who dropped by to wish her happy birthday. I am not my mother's daughter. If I was celebrating my 84th birthday I would not be cooking for 50 people. LOL

jo, lucky mom! I would love to have bunches and bunches of grandchildren. My little guy is 6 and just the best thing ever! I just wanted to pop in and say hi. It is a tough time of year for us. I miss my dear Wyatt so much. DH and I went to the cemetery yesterday. There are a lot of deer that live there. It is fun to watch them but I have to remember to bring flowers they don't like to eat!

the train idea may work as i am close to north east corridor. My concern is the idea of traveling alone. Been having some wierd vision tnings lately

But got time for a plan, maybe draft a pal to go with me

Iris, you'll figure out something. I think the train is a good idea...taking a pal might make for a fun ride!

Well, I've mentioned the new house we were buying in our new locale here in Santa Fe: sadly, the deal fell through: inspections found serious problems with the installation of the heating/HVAC system, and without re-venting the entire system there could be a danger of too much CO2 in the house. Not good. The problem was that fixing it and venting properly would have been expensive. We asked the sellers for a price reduction to cover that cost. They refused.

So... we backed out of the deal, which of course we were allowed to do since there was this hidden problem with the HVAC. But being the type to get back on the horse that threw me, we went out house shopping today...and darned if we didn't find one we like better! It is in totally move in ready condition, with a dreamy kitchen and back yard, and a beautiful master bedroom, on 1.5 acres of land....Best of all, the asking price is really good.

The only issue we have with the house is that it is quite a bit bigger than we need: I could have an entire room just set aside for when the grandkids visit! We said we were downsizing....hah! Should I just stop feeling guilty about buying more than I need? Of course, they have to accept our offer first.....

Anyway, I know. It's a good type of problem.

    Hugs to all;
