    hello fitness friends!

I’ve been on the struggle bus for awhile due to low RBCs and tried to motivate myself by making a weekly goal fitness chart. Or maybe I just miss doing circle time with my preschoolers and got in a crafty mood, lol. My chart has pictures of my usual fitness activities (bike, Leslie Sansone videos, hiking, elliptical, etc) that I Velcro under each day and write in the minutes I spent on each. I’m trying to get to the recommended 150 minutes weekly. Hope everyone is doing well & staying active!

Momchichi- Always good to have a plan!!

Grandma camp is this week and we are off road bicycling today. Grandpa and the kids have already wiped out on the “tricks”. I’m just plain wiped out :). Resting on a picnic table at the trailhead and hoping they return uninjured.

Lots of fun,but I keep thinking of Z flying over the handlebars.

Putt putt golf and go karts tonight.

    All things socially distant!

Stay safe and feel well, friends!

lwrite, I remember when Z flew over her handlebars, you take care and rest up and enjoy the ride.

I have been out for two trips today. First trip involved about 30 mins of walking while weighed down by groceries in my knapsack and a couple of bags.

Then this afternoon, I decided I could use some tortilla chips which I forgot this morning. I decided to go for a long walk through a park where I would need to walk up a steep incline. It will be fun I told myself. I thought I was going to die before getting up the hill. I have done that hill before but it was just as tough. Once I got up the hill and was walking toward the grocery store, sat on every shaded bench I could find. I was very hot under my mask when in the grocery store but kept it on. Only needed cheese and the tortilla chips so not a heavy load. Tell you what, I wasn't sure I would make it home but I did. Took my wig and clothes off right away. Feeling good now.

Hello. New here! I am glad to find this thread. your stories are inspiring me.

I set up my goal to reach 10,000 steps or 5 miles per day! I’ve just started walking from Sunday this week, for 5 minutes each day. PT hip and glute exercises helped keeping my balance. I know 5miles is a long shot but makes me hopeful. I use to run 3-5 miles 3 times per week. Stage iv and spine fracture dragged me down to baby steps. So here I am, goal set.

I hope this thread will be active again with more inspirational posts.

    Best,

    Julia.

I still have goals I work on. I want to be more consistent in my walking but have had to rest for a few days due to sore leg where it joins my body. I think I overdid a lot of squats doing sit to stands. They may be good but they do cause pain. I am just resting every other day and just walking outdoors in morning and on my treadmill after it gets too hot. I have liked listening to my audiobooks when on the treadmill. Less boring that way. Outside, I just use music as I really have to watch my steps on the sidewalk, I am a foot shuffler if I am not careful and prone to pitching forward when I trip on the gap between sidewalk pavers.

I think everyone is just out enjoying themselves this summer as best they can since covid. I do hope more people post too, helped me to get and stay fairly active and credit that with being able to live a fairly good quality of life. It is nice to meat you Julia, hope to see more of you. I'll post if you do. People like you inspire someone like me when you are able to overcome what you have to deal with.

welcome to the group, Julia! I had just got into running by doing a couch to 5K program when I developed a spinal met. Then I tried race walking then just regular ol’walking. Whatever I can do to move. My goal is at least 20 minutes of activity (brisk walk, dancing, cycle, weights, etc) daily even on chemo day. I never could seem to get to 10K steps even pre-cancer, despite working as a preschool teacher and chasing little ones all day. I look forward to your posts!

Mara and Momchichi thanks for warm welcoming, great to meet you here. Your posts inspiring me. We share many similarities, I hope we can inspire each other in what we have to deal with, so count me in I’ll post everyday.

My today’s goal is to continue my 5 minutes walking, I am going to change venue a bit, so plan to walk outside under sunshine! It would be hot I know that but my body needs vitamin D. It would be good to get some natural vitamins without fearing of clash with meds.

Mara, same as you I have to watch my steps on sidewalks, I am still working on my balance.

Good for you on those walks and getting used to the sunshine. 5 mins definitely adds up.

I am comfortable walking now, am picking up my feet more, the habit starting to stick. It is very hot and humid here so I walked for groceries this morning. Have gone out for 2 other 10 minute walks this afternoon, don't want to over heat and may do one or two more this evening. We will see. I prefer not to go to far when it is hot because it really is not necessary but don't always feel like using my treadmill.

Hi Mara, I am glad that you are comfortable with walking and get benefits. Please make sure you drink enough water, dehydration is not good for us.

I am writing now to conclude my last 2 walkings, yesterday I walked under sunshine, and today morning I got up with better energy, usually I wake up on zero energy. So 2 points for sunshine!! This encouraged me to walk under sunshine again today, I pushed myself to walk more, it was about 14 minutes when I felt my leg was dragging, a little numb now but my feelings and energy are high, I like that. I guess it is too soon to walk further. I might go for 2 five minutes instead of one. But for now I stick with one 5 minutes per day.

How is about you and walking today? I hope all’s well.

It is hot and humid here, 104 and sunny. I used a UV blocking umbrella to keep out of sun. Short walks today, about 10 mins, did this throughout today. Also walked to grocery store this morning. About 20 mins of walking with that.

We got the spin bike assembled on Sunday and yesterday I used it for the first time. 20 minutes just to start, and just pedaling on a light setting, no 'workout' or anything, to see how my back would tolerate it. It felt great! That was the first aerobic workout I've had in over a year. Broke a bit of a sweat and when I was starting to get too elevated of a heart rate and breathing, backed off. Felt a bit queasy after, but that could have been from engaging muscles that haven't been used in a while.

Between this and my adjustable barbell set I now have a 'home gym' set up, so I can ditch my gym membership.

Today I will just do a short walk around the neighborhood and my PT exercises/stretches. Its only in the upper 60s here so comfortable, but also not a real summer!

Julia - I know that feeling of frustration of being sidelined from something you once enjoyed doing, due to bone mets. Or having to regain fitness from what seems like such a low level compared to 'the past'. But having little goals is still important and I've gone from five minute walks in the cul de sac on my crutches with a busted pelvis (January) to *see above". Consistency and dedication matter and accepting that some days are good and some are bad, but even the tough days usually lead to something better down the line. I figure exercise is the other part of the equation to the drugs for both mental and physical management and just like the drugs needs to be taken daily!

the last page is so encouraging to me, thank you everyone. I was very fit before my dx in Feb and tried to keep it up once I started treatment in late March but gradually things went downhill. I stupidly overdid it and injured myself and at one point eventually the injury plus crushing fatigue from treatments meant I was almost bedbound, just hobbling to the bathroom.

I lost so much muscle and endurance and it's hard to recover. I've read it's esp hard with liver mets as that's where proteins are synthesized.

But I am improving. Last week I walked very slowly but pretty much nonstop for 20 min one day. I'm going to try a walk today - just haven't decided how long. I'm so paranoid about injury now that I set my goals low.

Moth, good for you for setting goals. Does not matter how long, just that you are doing it. It will help so much in the long run.

I did go for a longer walk to a restaurant today. I did sweat my butt off as it was very hot and humid (felt like 39 Celsius or 102 F.) I normally only do 10 mins several times but thought I wanted to pick up burgers. The walk there was fine, getting home after was a slog but I did do it. Felt fine once I cooled off, face very red. I drank water before and on the way home and it was good.

Goals are so helpful for me. I love hearing about what you all are doing!

We survived Grandma Camp, but I don't think I'll try bicycling on trails again. Yikes!

I started lifting weights again this week (light ones) and doing squats and lunges to build up some leg strength. My strength and balance have suffered from inactivity recently. I feel so much better with even a half mile walk, but this heat means I don't go after 8 am when it hits 80. We're supposed to go to Colorado at the end of the month and I want to be able to hike at least a little at altitude. I'm still not committed to the trip due to Covid.

I haven't seen Andi here...hope she checks in soon!

SondraF, thank you so much for your encouragement, and deeply understanding. I like it when you said there are good days and bad days but even the tough days might lead to a better outcome.

Mara, I am glad you walk farther distance. Those small steps worked for you hurrays! That is one of those positive outcomes. Keep posted please.

Momchichi, that is very good and huge efforts you exercise after chemo, I heard that physical exercise helps medication work better. I’d like to know more about that Leslie Sansone videos you were talking about.

Moth and Iwrite, please share your daily goals and achievements. We here encourage each other.

I had to stay in bed for a couple of days, that made me sad, pt got me a new exercise to help nerves. Today I feel better, I’ll go for 5 minutes walk under sunshine again, plus pt exercise. I keep doing this until I can walk 5 miles! Goal set

Julia - I get on YouTube and type in “Leslie Sansone walk” and get tons of free videos or you can subscribe to her channel. Here is one link:

both my mom & I love leslie’s passion for getting everyone active and the walking is never boring, it goes really quickly

I have to second everyone on the Leslie Sansone. If a person does not have a treadmill or even if they do, she is good and the workouts on youtube are great. I tend to do the 1.0 mile happy walk which is my favourite. There also is a 2 min walk and 5 min walk as well. Even several of those strung together throughout the day are helpful.

The only walking I did today was to a store this morning. I confess I am tired of the heat already but still going out as i feel like. Used my UV umbrella today, like taking the shade with me. Still very hot, even at 8 am.

thank you for the information. I should probably start Leslie Sansone sessions, as much as I enjoy walking outside but indoor exercise is more safe , in our area cases are surging. Except numb leg, the walking was good, I did 10 minutes, progress

Sitting here thinking about how I need to get back to activity after spending so much time losing weight and muscle from the swallowing issues caused my nerve damage during brain surgery.

I appreciate everyone still posting great tips and accomplishments.

Also, thinking of Z today and feeling saddened, she was a kind and smart force that seemed to only operate in high gear. :(

I went for a walk on my own with my dog today for 30 min. It's been ages since I felt up to doing that. It was a hot day too: 29C when I was out. I would like to do this daily for a week and then move up to 2 walks/day. I still feel very weak and deconditioned - everything about me is flabby and doesn't want to do what it used to do.

    Ah well, baby steps :)

As Z said...”We adapt and keep going.”

One early thread contributor took her oxygen tank for a one block walk. She said she felt better afterwards.

Starting over seems to be the norm for us due to setbacks. Mae- You are a great example of this.

I think I start over on fitness about every six months.

Just started back with weights and kettlebells at home. I can already feel better balance and endurance after a few weeks. It’s also made it less scary to wear sleeveless shirts.

My current goal is to be able to hike in Colorado in two weeks without collapsing. ...and play with my grand daughter. If COVID continues to get worse we may not drive out but I’m still hopeful

I am still here and miss Z as well. She was so motivating to me and was the one who got me started walking back in 2016 and 2017. That got me out of the hell of the fatigue and depression of my whole brain radiation.

I am still walking today. Trying to get 3 to 4 at least 30 min outdoor walks. It has been challenging some days with 100 F temps but I made it through each, very sweaty but feeling good.I have been also putting in challenges like steep hills. The last walk I just came back from, I walked up to a park and went up a steep path up to the top, then I went right back down and headed home. Did not take into account some of the walk home was uphill as well, not as steep. So many times want to stop and sit but something kept me going knowing that sitting would just delay the relief of my cool apartment. I also know I will feel good doing this later. I may stop now, don't need to do anymore. Going to put on my toe spacer to stretch my feet a bit and just sit on my butt in front of the fan

Hi All! Sorry I haven't been posting much! It's been a busy summer and I've been taking advantage of nice weather to get out and about. I went to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area a couple of times and paddling and portaging canoes and packs is quite a workout. I have been trying to walk daily as well as do some weight bearing exercises and biking as well as my ever present yoga.

llmae - I miss Z as well. She was such a motivating force for me and really kept us all connected, I think. It was a hard blow to lose her, but I'm grateful to see so many of you still here and still posting and still moving just like she told us to.

Hope you are all doing well.

    hi fitness friends,

Great to hear from everyone! I did a 30 minute YouTube workout with my 2 lb weights today. I’ve worked up to it, starting with just 10 minutes a couple weeks ago. Hope everyone has a wonderful and active weekend!
