I've finally started avoiding my right wing neighbor. It stems from me making progress on developing much better personal boundaries in the past few years, and that stems from realizing I'd bought into the patriarchal “be a nice girl" and be tolerant. I'm am still a considerate person but I have learned that I don't have to put myself in situations I don't want to be in. It's not that my neighbor is around all that much, but I'm not interested in even occasional small chat with him any more. Today when dh and I got home, I was walking in the house when neighbor and his wife struck up a conversation across the fence with dh who was coming out of the garage. I didn't bother to go out and join them. Later, dh came in and said, “Neighbor said he went and got certified so he can carry a gun in church." I said, “That's why I didn't come outside and talk with the three of you." Neighbor’s so friggin proud of himself.
I live in a town of 5,000 with almost no crime to speak of. Pretty much everyone knows everyone and/or you know someone who knows the people you don't know. Most everyone feels safe taking a walk through town literally at any time of the day or night. Neighbor acts like we are living in the wild effing west. Even more reason I'll never set foot in his church. He also enjoys trying to get under my skin, and I consider that type of person “not a friend". So he looses the privilege of my company.

I support you 100%, Divine. At least twice reading your post I thought to myself, regarding your neighbor, 'how ugly'. I think I'd feel the same. There is not a lot to build on with your neighbor.

Divine, your neighbor really sounds unhinged and the person he may need the gun for is himself. Sounds like he is the only certifiable (and certified) person in town. Your town is small so if there were an overwhelming crime problem I could see wanting to carry a gun but to want to take it to church makes no sense to me. Is his God the threat? Why would it be needed? Good fences make good neighbors, so glad you have a fence to keep him on his side. Don't take his bait which it seems like you are able to deflect successfully. Is his spouse as bad? I would probably ask him if he really listens to what he is actually saying because I have no tolerance for people like him.

People wouldn't have to take guns to church if we had common sense gun control. I obviously don't know, but I would bet he's a MAGAt who votes for the scum who refuse to rein in the guns. But I agree with betrayal, don't take his bait, just avoid his sorry arse.

Ruth, I'm cackling a little over the bad sermon. I think it sorts of ranks alongside arming yourself to go to Walmart for your box of Wheaties. I cannot fathom it really. I think there is also something to the idea that being able to conceal/carry tends to enlarge some "body" parts. Neighbor ought to know that some people likely think it has conversely diminished his brain.

Yep, neighbor is a Trumper. His wife and I have never discussed politics of any kind. I know she’s a Republican because she’s worked the polls in the past, but she’s very laid back. She also has never tried to get me to go to her church. Our relationship is completely different than what I have with her husband.

Watching t.v. this a.m. Seems the Loon went to Texas -- Corpus Christi to be exact. Maybe they won't mind being stiffed for fees if he decides to skip out on them like he did in El Paso. The El Paso bill was huge, and maybe due to the Loon having way less of an audience and as well being just a citizen, the bill won't be so enormous although still would qualify to be paid, period.
Anyway, as I rather thought, being the narcissist that the Loon is, he was really ranting about the subpoena he received from 1/6 committee. I'm sure it was not a surprise, but I'm also sure he hated the specifics of it which the committee spelled out pretty good. There was no doubt, and no ambiguity, and in its honesty it made the Loon look as bad as he is. Very un-complimentary. to say the least. I think he was livid. He REALLY will be looking for some juicy revenge.
Still wearing on those of us who wait to see SOME punishment. Even knowing indictments and chgs. have to be air-tight with no wiggle room, it is painful to see anyone, but very much the Loon walk around in decent society thumbing his nose. Can only hope that he is taken down well, and proper.
Getting more nervous by the day wondering about our soon to happen election and how it will go. Also, nervous that even if we were successful and didn't lose anything, likely still some of the maga loons will get into office somewhere as there are so many on this ballot.
