Good Morning, Loungettes!Sadie and I are up and moving, or at least I am up and moving, Sadie is just up.So not liking getting up in the dark. Cannot wait for the sun to start coming up earlier again.Light in the evening is nice, but in the morning when I'm trying to get the mind and bod moving is better!

Genny--Can't wait to see pics of the fireplace! It sounds lovely.A knee high boot for a month?Sounds very fashionable!Hope it works for you. That poor rescue, after all that I'd want to be a lap buddy, too.Hope everyone gets along well.I always thought a blue tinge to the whites of the eyes was a sign of good health and being in shape, but I never researched it.It'll be interesting to see what the occu-whatever specialist says.Yup, still winter here, but mud season is making inroads, so the snow will be gone soon. The new computer system is making life easier at work, and finally getting the bugs worked out of the processes. It has cut down on my documentation time by a huge factor!

Jazzy--Asthma and allergies are not a fun combo.Make sure you cover your face with a scarf or wear a mask during the high wing/high allergen times. That helps me quite a bit.Not going out is better, of course, but not always possible. The terror attack is so scary, and on TV everywhere I go.

Cammy--I know gabapentin well, it got me through the hot flashes brought on by arimadex for 4 years. But it is primarily an anti-seizure drug and people can have odd reactions to this kind of drug.Sorry that happened to you. I am being careful out there, no go answer your phones!$1,400 for 2 weeks of med?YIKES!

Chi--by now you must be at the airport.Flying to London, how exciting, and how scary right now!Hope you found a solution for the sleeve and boo-boo.Amazing how we can get skinned knees and elbows without hurting the clothes we're wearing. When I tumbled just before the cruise my pants were fine but my knee had a big spot of missing skin. But that was no where near as bad as what you are dealing with.Using a wheelchair is a good idea, for your own comfort and energy. You are probably right about not being exempt from any security screenings right now.Hope you are enjoying the Admiral's Club and free libations by now!Have a great trip!

    Good morning, Queen!

Julie--I have the same mental pic of Mary and the boot!

Jazzy--if this is WW III, it's a freaking scary war!

Hsant--Sears has quite the reputation for taking a long time to fix things.Hope your repairman can fix the dryer in one visit.Your girlfriend must have been terrified that day.I cannot imagine see that in person, it was so bad at one remove on TV.Last snow is almost gone, but a new winter weather advisory is up for tonight and tomorrow.Sigh.A Cabernet IV drip and full blown exorcism, what a mental pic!

Cammy--perfect A hole, what a hoot!Love the Apricot Fizz, too! Thanks! Love the way you are always thinking of me and the rest of us!And there is nothing wrong with being bossy, boss lady.

Good morning friends- I felt a bit better yesterday, whatever I have going on is settled mostly in my chest and I have a rattly cough. There are so many people at my client site who are sick, and my direct client I work for has a very bad head cold. I sat in a meeting with her and she just kept saying "I can't breathe!" I have a secret weapon, an aromatherapy oil called Clean Air I shared with her and that helped. I was able to get a few errands done after work yesterday, but going to bed early every night. The winds were up yesterday, but no dust, but expect some pollen blowing around.

Two more days to my birthday/Easter escape to the hot springs. I need it bad!

Cami- you most certainly are bossy this morning, but we like that about you. I too would like to hear from some of the ladies like Dara, who lost her dad and Pam who went through chemo recently. Some of our sisters here are having a tough time. We must be patient until they feel ready to talk to us.

NM- March is always a rough time for me. Change of time always messes up my sleep, plus blooming things, spring winds, etc. I always seem to have some sort of crap going on in March, almost a given. Sounds like the winds won't be as bad now, but still around.

Hsant- here is the label for Impatience rose. I have not tried it yet, but taking it with me on my trip up north!

    (waves hello)

I'd need the IV drip after three weeks with some of my own relatives, at this point. Not gonna touch the MIL thing.

Not much going on here--had to report in for jury duty on Tuesday, and made it all the way into the box before getting dismissed with a peremptory challenge (the one where they don't have to say why) Hmph. Pouted for all of .02 seconds, then went out to late brunch with DH.

    Morning DahhhhLinks!!

Julie - glad your mum is much better, sorry the family in fits.

Cami - I like having them all in one day too. But because the Bone scan is nuclear, they have to wait at least 24 hours. I've still got to pack up my sons paperwork. Gonna put a whole drawerful in a bankers box. Have 2 full boxes that have to go too. We r celebrating Easter at his house so have to have them ready. Also have to make macaroni salad but that doesn't take very long. I hope you can get a nurse over to draw your blood. $1400 for 2 weeks is outrageous, time to write another letter this time to the makers of that med. To charge that much really pisses me off. (((Cami)))

Stella - Welcome to the Lounge, yay for not giving up your daily libation.

NM - black iceโ€ฆscares the chit outta me, u b careful. Thanks for the prayers as my weight keeps dropping and doc has to lower the dose of Kadcyla, so not getting as much medicine. Pre-board must b different cuz it's happened to me twice, it just shows up on my boarding pass. IDK

Mary - a knee high bootโ€ฆugh, hope it helps. The little rescue dog sounds soooo cute, hope the home visit goes well and you get ltl Sierra. Oh good for you, getting Anorable on Sat night, very exciting. I don't think I'll get to see any of my gkids' boohoo. I know you'll have a gr8 time but I'm very envious. OMG, blue tingeโ€ฆ.I will say prayers that it is nothing serious. (((Mary)))

Jazz - My DH is suffering from allergies more this year than previous. The array of medicine on his table is mind boggling. He went to our local Quick Care to try and get a kenalog shot, but they said they didn't have anyone on duty that day that could give the shot. WTF!!

Sandy - OMG, the aftermath of the fall sound terrible. U going to London, very cool, never been, hope your knee, elbow and arm don't hinder you too much. Hope you have lots of fun.

Hsant - WHAT?, usually Sears is more prompt than that, at least around here. Hope the handyman can get you back up and running soonliest. Well you gave me my laugh for today with your prescription for making it 3 weeks with you MIL..LOL.

Queen - I don't like jury duty either, glad you got dismissed.

Dara dahhhling I miss you hope you are doing better. ((((((Dara))))))

    Lubs to all!

Good morning, Loungettes!Happy Friday!Freezing drizzle coming down right now, waiting for the plow/sand trucks go by before heading out to work this ayem.Poor Sadie jumped out onto the deck and all 4 paws went in different directions and she went splat! She gave me the dirtiest look, like it was MY fault! She wasn't hurt and was happy again as soon as she peed.

Jazzy--Here's to your cold/allergies getting better and not worse!Have you tried using a netti pot during allergy season? It helps my allergy symptoms when the pine trees are turning everything yellow with pollen.Wish I could escape with you to the hot springs!Pretty bottle of rose.

Queen--I love pouting for .02 seconds!Although I would be very curious why the peremptory challenge. But then I'm a nosy one.

Mema--black ice scares me chitless, too.Not so much that I will hit it, but that the person BEHIND me will and hit ME!Or the person in front ofme, or the person coming the other way.People simply will not slow down, then they get irritated with me because I DO slow down.I guess Pre Board is a mystery.

    Julie--LOL, nasal irrigation with coffee!

Good morning girls, thought I'd pop in quick before getting ready for work. Ugh, I don't like working this much, I really do need to give my notice and quit the Saturday job, just not enough money to make it worth it. I did call the cleaning lady that I laid off last fall and begged her to come back to me! She is going to start bi-monthly cleaning while I'm gone on vacay so We'll come back to a nice clean house. The boot does seem to be helping, foot is not hurting at the end of my workday like it was. So I gave my DS a bunch of choices of what I could make for Easter dinner and he picked tacos. Go figure, tacos for Easter.

Julie, funny, me jogging in the boot, I have been walking the dogs with it but I think jogging is out. Golfing may be another story, way I see it is it will give me a great excuse for sucking at it as bad as I do.

NM, ugh, I hate black ice, had quite an experience with it driving to Detroit airport for vacay to the Virgin Islands years ago. We had 2 carloads of people and we were driving along when suddenly my friends in the car in front of us started sliding all over, the car rolled, landed right side up and was totaled, we were able to get our car stopped but all the other cars were going everywhere. our friends luggage went over the guardrail and down a hill, one of the scariest things I've ever seen. And after your accident last year I'm sure it still haunts you. Hope this winter blast is over soon and for good. I like the idea of blue sclera meaning I am healthy altho everything I've read more likely means I'm old. I guess as we age the sclera thins and the blue choroid shows thru. I guess it's harmless and nothing to worry about unless it gets dark blue.

hsant, hope you get the dryer fixed, what a pain. So you may be staying for the whole summer? I'll bet your husband is really missing you by now, have you seen him at all since you got here?

Chi, have fun and stay safe.

Jazzy, sorry to hear you are sick, glad you are starting to feel better. Hope your birthday and Palm Springs trip are fabulous!

Cami, I had to call Lori yesterday to cancel my trip to see you, darn, I really wanted to come but the timing just won't work, too close to vacation, I just have too much to do. We are having new furniture delivered Monday and DH has to go out of town and it just won't work... boohoo. But Lori is still planning on coming, she will be calling you. Just a thought, did you try calling the manufacturer of that drug to see if they will supply it when insurance won't cover it? I thing some drug companies do that.

Sue, the boot is just a nuisance but it does seem to help at work and for walking the dogs. Sierra's foster mom is coming to do a home visit next Thursday, she sounds very protective of her, we'll see how it goes. Hope all the tests go ok and show no changes. Wish you could see your gkids, I have only been able to see Nora about once/month and it's just not enough.

Well I've got to run, hope you all have a great day!

    hsant, this is for you..

NM: (shrugs) No idea why I got the boot from the jury box, though I'd guess it's something to do with educational background (I have a master's degree in library science) or what I'm now doing for a living (freelance editor--both attorneys asked me about it). Certainly I didn't fit any of the obvious categories: knew someone involved in the case, in law enforcement/legal profession, affected by a crime similar to what was involved in this trial, blah blah blah.

Black ice scares the chit out of me too--we get significant amounts of it at least once a year here in SW Michigan.

But those amended IV drips should be part of standard hospital equipment! I suspect that nurses would appreciate it for some of their patients.

Good morning friends- greetings from congested NM. I wish I had taken today off, but opted for Monday instead. Just have a short conf call to get through and high level status report for the week and then am shutting down with work and focusing on some rest. I am still planning to go to the hot springs, it will do me good to soak, sit in the steam room there, etc.

My body has been trashed this week. Everybody here is sick with colds, infections, allergies, you name it. The winds are killing us!

NM- I rolled a car on black ice once in upstate NY many years ago. I was lucky, not hurt, but car was totaled. One of my many nine lives. Be careful.

Hsant- I am going to leave my wine at home as it won't do this girl good to be drinking anything right now. Nothing tastes good except hot tea and orange juice. I will save my wine for when I feel better!

Genny- thank you for the good wishes. The hot springs are actually in northern NM. I did go to PS for Xmas to see my sister. Lots of "springs" places I like to go. I am a hot springs junkie!

Cami- oh so good to hear about Joey. It takes awhile with any instrument to get past the squeaking, especially the clarinet. I still squeak on my sax sometimes.

Will wish you a nice holiday weekend for anyone celebrating, and talk to you on the other side of the trip!

Hello ladies.......I just found this thread and the "how about drinking?" title caught my eye. I have been reading through some of the posts and it sounds like many of you have been on this thread for quite some time and seem to know one another well. Since I'm new to this thread and fairly "new" to breast cancer (diagnosed about 5 months ago), I'm still reading, learning and asking lots of questions. As I said, the title caught my attention, so here's my question to all you "experienced" with breast cancer: I've read in numerous articles that drinking alcohol can be related to having breast cancer. How much truth is there to that statement? I like to have a few drinks with my hubby and friends but I'm finding that since my diagnosis and what I've read that I wonder if I should just cut out all alcohol. I'm trying to learn all I can about helping to prevent a recurrence, including improvement in my nutrition and exercise as well. I'd like to hear your thoughts and/or experiences about what effect alcohol plays or has played in the development and/or recurrence of breast cancer.

Fearless: my short reply is "Welcome to the group!" I hope you'll stick around long enough to get to know us too.

I'm sure some of the other lovely ladies here (and they are lovely) will be able to come up with a more complete answer for your actual question, though! Has anyone found reputable information on alcohol consumption's effect on recurrence after an initial diagnosis?

Thanks for the welcome, queenmomcat. I can tell from what I've read that the ladies on this thread are a lively group! I've learned one thing from my cancer diagnosis and that's to live life to the fullest and not allow cancer to bring me down! Yes, there were depressing days in the past several months, but I choose to be a survivor and live! I'm looking forward to learning more information about alcohol consumption and how it may relate to recurrence (or how it may be related to initial diagnosis also).

"Enjoy life!" is a grand way to handle this situation, I'd say; if that means a drink now and again, fine. (all standard disclaimers apply: talk things over with your oncologists) Certainly mine never mentioned it!

While there's a pretty clear correlation between alcohol consumption and several cancers, I don't know if anyone's come out with a reliable study showing causation. Having the body part in question is the only clear-cut causation that I know of for most cancers.

i think moderation is the key in anything,my sister has never been overweight ,exercised ,never smoked and she had stage 2 breast and she is now 10 years clear woohooThumbsUp, my aunt while a little overweight ,never smoked ,drank on rare occasions only ,exercise limited due to heart condition also got it, so some is life guided but there is a lot they don't know yet

ok has you know dad and mam have been ill well he had a knock on the door on wednesday, thinking it was the social workers, he said come on in ladies and take a seat ,they were Jevhovahs witness' probably haven;t had such a welcome before , mind, has nobody has had a chance to clean since the weekend everysurface was probably loaded with the resp virus they both gotShockedso they may have got a parting gift

my sister is having a hysterectomy next month, well it my nephew fiancees hen do the weekend before, so she thinks she shouldn't do the afternoon activites once she starts the bowel prep but i think laxatives and trampolining would go well together . don't you all think that,(wish i could insert an evil laugh here)

Fearless- welcome to our thread. I joined this thread sometime in the past year as I was trying to find a sister here (Cami) who had been on another thread with me when I started BCO in the fall of 2012. This is a fun and lively thread and sometimes we talk about drinking more than we do it.

Regarding BC and breast cancer, the info I know of is that alcohol consumption can increase estrogen in our bodies and that is the concern. If you have an ER positive pathology, they like to keep your estrogen down, which is why most of us that are taking the aromatase inhibitors. I met with two MO's when I first got a diagnosis and had heard of this connection in the past, so I asked them and one suggested not drinking more than 3 drinks per week, the other had no opinion on it. I know some MO's have told women on these threads to just not drink at all, but I have never heard that myself from my medical team. I encourage you to ask your MO if you have not already what he or she thinks? Most of us here imbib on some level, although I doubt you will find any hard core partiers here?

    Welcome to our thread!

WELCOME FEARLESS AND I HOPE U STAY TO GET TO KNOW US AND WE GET TO KNOW U.

OF COURSE I'M NO AUTHORITY ON ALCOHOL BUT LIKE JULIE SAID MODERATION DOES SEEM POPULAR AROUND HERE. THERE ARE SO MANY STUDIES FOR CANCER--WHO KNOWS WHAT'S GOOD ANYMORE, WHAAT WAS BAD A COUPLE OF YRS. AGO IS GOOD NOW.I DO REMEMBER WHEN I WAS IN CHEMO THERE WERE A COUPLE OF PEOPLE THAT DRANK AND THE NURSE WOULD ASK THEM TO JUST WAIT A DAY, THEY NEVER DID BUT THEY HAVE BEEN FINE AND THEY DRANK THE HARD STUFF. LOL MY DAD DRANK WINE EVERY DAY AND LIVED TO BE 96 SO WHO REALLY KNOWS AND MY MOM HAD CANCER IN 1950'S AND DRANK WHEN SHE RETIRED AT 62 AND LIVED TO BE 88 WITH NO RECURRENCE SO IT'S A TOSS UP I GUESS. BUT THERE ARE SOME GREAT WINES MENTIONED HERE.

JAZZY I REALLY LIKE HOW U'R SPENDING U'R WEEKEND SOUNDS SO RELAXING, I'LL END UP STILL WATCHING THIS CRAZY ISIS STUFF I KNOW I WILL WHICH LET'S FACE IT MORE EMAILS WILL BE SENT IT'S SO SO SCARY.

OK IT'S STILL CHILLY HERE, AND I'M PLANNING ON GOING OUT EASTER, YEA WE'LL SEE, EVERYTIME I PLAN WE KNOW HOW THAT GOES.

Hey all, just pooping in to say hi and I'm having a good visit. Got to see some HS friends that I always do. Spent today in the hospital with my mom, same as always and she has uti. Security at the airport was interesting, entering the line they had a TSA dog, sniffed my lap top for a good bit. After my ticket was checked I removed my boots, tsa guy say everyone to keep their shoes on, so back on my boots go. I get my lap top out, as that is the usual thing, they say keep them in the case no need to remove them, so I put it back. My turn to go thru the arch thing, I beep, back up and they tell me to take my boots off!!!! I said I did this once already! All was good and I was actually to my gate in 30 minutes.

I had labs drawn on last Friday, checked them the day before I left and my TM's went from 60/70 ish to 100. And my CEA went up as well.

Today I spent the day with my mom in ER. The same as always, hard to breath, heart palps and tremors, and then she was sent home. I am SPENT and too tired to comment to everyone, but I have read all the posts. So I would say sorry, but I know that is not allowed here!

Welcome to the new goils and ......

CAMI, I HOPE YOU ARE FEELING WELL ENOUGH FOR ME TO COME VISIT! I know it will be a last minute decision, but that is ok.

Luv to all of you....and CHEERS!

Here is a pic of me and my HS peeps, I am on the far left, for those of you that don't know me. We had a great visit at my brothers, libations and visited until like midnight!

Hi all! Thanks for the warm welcome. I appreciate the information you've shared and it matches what I've read. I understand how alcohol can work to increase the estrogen and yes, I'm estrogen positive. I enjoy my vodka & soda or glass or two of wine but kept thinking I needed to turn into a tee-totaler to further decrease my chance of recurrence. Plus, I certainly don't want alcohol tohave a counter effect on the anastrozole I'm taking. I'll just keep it in moderation as I normally do. I want to live my life to the fullest and not let cancer and its effects control my life.

Fearless, I got all sorts of answers--from my husband saying it's the fat cells, not the alcohol, that are the culprit: my BS, who said 3 drinks a week; my PCP, who said up to 5-6 3-oz glasses of wine (i.e., "half-drinks"), but keep it red (he's from Sonoma); my MO, who said 2 drinks a week, my shrink who suspects they're gonna recommend abstinence; and my BS' NP--a survivor herself--who said "all things in moderation." So I decided to try and figure out alcohol's role in all of this.

Here's the key--too much alcohol slows liver function, which means the liver can't clear estrogen (and other substances) from the bloodstream as fast as it should. Now here's where it gets dicey--there are no studies suggesting that alcohol increases the chance of recurrence of ER+ tumors, only the chance of developing them. And the two types of anti-estrogen drugs have two different modus operandi for keeping estrogen away from tumor cells. SERMs like tamoxifen throw roadblocks in the pathway estrogen takes to the estrogen receptors on tumor cells, as well as occupying them so the estrogen can't attach and the cell can't be fueled by it. AI's inhibit the secretion and action of aromatase, an enzyme the body makes to convert the androstenedione made by the fat cells and adrenals into estrogen. (If there were no such thing as aromatase, after menopause we'd all be able to hit 70+ home runs a year--ask Mark McGwyre & Sammy Sosa). If you're on SERMs, you still have some circulating estrogen--most of it can't get into the tumor cells, but the liver still needs to be able to get rid of it. But if you're on AIs, the only estrogen you have is what your fat cells and adrenals make--or would have made if they were able to avail themselves of aromatase--which is what AIs block. So theoretically, alcohol is more dangerous for women with ER+ tumors who are premenopausal, on SERMs, or both. Not to mention even riskier for women who have yet to be diagnosed and treated

But we all know legions of women who never touched a drop and still got bc. (My m-i-l and best friend, to name two--and another friend's teetotaling triathlete wife, for a third). So we're back to square one. Prudence says don't binge (if you get tipsy, you've had too much) and don't drink just because it's there--it ought to be nothing but the very tastiest you can afford, and water the rest of the time. Even I go most nights without drinking.

That being said, I'm on holiday in London right now. Sandy's Four-Day Lost Weekend began with champagne in the British Airways lounge (didn't finish even a third of it) at O'Hare, pink champagne on the plane (sm. glass), a third of a glass of Sancerre at lunch, a glass of champagne and half a glass of red at dinner. Maybe an ounce at bedtime, maybe not. Lots of espresso (regular & decaf), though.

    Happy Birthday, Jazzy!๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿท๐Ÿท

I'm sorry you feel under the weather. Is it allergies or did you catch a nasty critter at work? Have a wonderful, relaxing time at the hot springs! It sounds like the perfect way to spend your birthday. Hope you feel better soon

Happy Birthday Jazzy. I think DOTD should be your choice!

Cami, I hope you are feeling better soon, and don't be worried if you have to cancel our visit. I understand. As for my numbers, normal is in the 30's. Mine took a huge leap (for me) it's always been up or down just a few numbers, 10 at the most.

    Happy Saturday!

Cami, I'm so sorry about your brother! Prayers are with him. I hope you're feeling better.

Genny, Those pics cracked me up! Thanks for that! I think an alcohol IV should be a staple in everyone's home, like a refrigerator or indoor plumbing. I'm glad the boot is helping. How long will you need to wear it? You must make one mean taco if that's what your DS requested for Easter dinner.

Nm, Sadie going splat! Poor girl! The black ice cocktail seems really tasty. I had to google Rumple Minze. 100 proof peppermint schnapps. Can't go wrong with that!

Memasue, I hope your DH is husband is feeling better. It seems like anyone with allergies is really suffering right now.

Queen, I always schedule jury duty the week of Christmas. Things tend to be slow in the courthouse, since a lot of attorneys go on vacation during that time. I've managed to avoid having to report the past couple of times.

Juliet, Are you a nurse? We need to hook you up, literally! I agree. A good tumble on the trampoline and a couple of laxatives would brighten anyone's day.

    Fearless, Hi! I'm new, also.

Goldie, beautiful pic! I have never seen a TSA dog at the airport. It's odd how you weren't initially required to take off your shoes or to take your computer out of its case. I wonder if it had something to do with the dog.

Hi friends- thank you for the birthday wishes! I am still pretty congested, but the cold is working it's way through. The hot shower is my BFF right now and just took one and that helped me to feel much better! The springs will help me to clear out a bit more. I am on day 5 and think I am through the worst of it (days 3-4 were pretty gnarly!) I don't like being sick on my birthday, but it has happened more times than not. I am prone to colds this time of the year. However, it is just a cold and I think I am going to live!

I am going to stop at Walgreens on my way up this morning to get some more cough drops and cold medicine, so I am well stocked for the weekend. I am hoping I can just move to taking something at night to sleep starting today.

Cami- I hope your brothers skin cancer is nothing serious. Two years after my bc dx, I had a spot on my scalp that looked funny and showed it to my PCP but she was not concerned. It kept growing and so I went to see the derm and she biopsied and I ended up having basal cell in that spot. Everything got taken care of there and the derm said catching anything early is key, just like with all cancers. If there is anything that can be said about skin cancers, it is that they are visible and allow us to get things checked out. So many other things are silent. And I thought just the other day how cancer is just everywhere anymore. Sigh sister, hope your bro is okay.

ChiSandy- glad to hear you made it over the pond. Enjoy your time in the EU! Great explanation of the whole drinking/estrogen thing. I learned a lot of from reading that!

    Happy Easter folks!
