We left the beach early this morning, in 49 degree weather, to make it downtown for our Columbus, Komen Hoopla. Here is my team, preparing to join the crowds:

Now to focus on my co-captain, Wonder Boy:

Today there were 40,000 people registered to walk/run. Pretty sobering thought that this year approx 40,000 will also perish. It was a record attendance. The rains of the week stopped long enough for the walking -- then resumed on my drive home. I kid you not.

Here's what a slice of the 40,000 look like:

While the bagpipes playing Amazing Grace @ the Detroit Koman last spring brought on an avalanche of tears -- my 'favorite' memory from today's gathering was the 3 block long stretch of motorcyclists lining the side walk. They were constantly reving their bikes. It was such a powerful show, such a heartfelt display of support. I walked the stroller right along side the line up of leather chaps, highly tattooed, bandana-wearing, bearded riders and each and every single one either gave me a high five, a hand shake or a hug. Many murmered "God Bless" or a simple congratulations. I was dripping wet and could barely see thru my tears by the time I got to the end of that crew. Then the last cyclist was one of my dear early childhood Head Start directors!! Turns out she was the organizer and rides in a Biking Ministry. Well my waterfall crested in her arms.

Beach buddies, we have a big crowd asking for "our cure". What an incredible display of support, encouragement, enthusiasm and energy. I pray that we are given that cure. I walked with a placard on my back, In celebration of: "BreastCancer.Org" and a picture of a beach.

Maybe I can get photobucket to share a few more details........

Who knew that Harley Davidson had uniformed cheerleaders? That, too was quite a sight! Think Dallas Cowgirls meets Playboy Bunnies.

An ecclectic bunch of bosoms for a BC event.

**oh, and they were giving out the free toilet paper packs.......

    Hi girls,

Sahalie, today's weather was tolerable, much more so than the past few days.

Faith and Debbie, good job on the walks.  It gives you a great feeling, doesn't it?

Debbie, I have a girlfriend who had a recurrence of bc.  She lost a ton of weight through gastric bypass but because she's had lymph nodes removed from both sides, she can't have plastic surgery on her arms so she has started designing stylish compression sleeves and apparently is doing quite well at it.

I think it's time to go get some dinner.  Hope you all have a good evening.

Sahalie - So sorry to hear about the loss of your Dear Husband and Father during the May curse. Sending you HUGS from the Beach.

Our two Debbie's - (Faith & Foots) - So PROUD of you girls for marching on. Your hearts must be filled with pride for your walking accomplishments. Thank you for taking strides for a cure.

Faith - You and WB look amazing in the pictures. Did you make the pink scarf? I still remember the one you wore last year. I loved the story about the bikers - Harley cheerleaders? - when are the tryouts? LOL

Nessie - How did your day go w/ granddaughter? I always loved pin the tail on the donkey - it is still a hit w/ my Day Care along w/ BINGO. I will take the classic games/board games any day over the video games.

Amy - How was your son's play? Wish he could perform for us at the beach. My DD was in several plays too, she now directs them.

Margaret - Hope the Margaretta ice cream cooled you off. Better send some to Sahalie. The quiche I made was crustless.

Iris - Did you get to enjoy a Starbucks this wkend? I may go tomorrow if the new Starbucks is open if not then Tim Hortons will have to do. Do you like the iced coffees? I have never tried one.....yet.

Hope everyone has a joyful Sunday best.

    Wings

Busy weekend. Trying to get ready for the summer. We have a small in ground pool... just had the liner replaced and upgraded the deck and fence. The pool boys were here today installing new liner.....sorry Nessie they did not meet cabana boy requirements. Remember the tattoo ladies at the Noodle lunch? - I think one of the pool boys must be related. LOL

Wings, the margarita ice cream is for the cooking club tomorrow.  So if you local Starbucks is open, I get a grande non-fat latte extra hot, unless the weather is hot, then I get a double-blended (so I don't get chunks of ice) coffee frappucino with no whip cream.  Love those.

    Hello Beach Buddies!

Wow...lovely pics today and wonderful words! So nice to have such a great thread to read and enjoy! I think I have used this pic before, just like the words and Helen Keller;always loved to read abt her and her remarkable life and courage.

Today(Saturday)was so wonderful for me and I hope for all of you, too! I am real interested in a volunteer organization(in Raleigh)and today was a big vol event! It was awesome as I helped children design original artwork to be made into quilts. They were beautiful and the quilts(when completed)will be given to either children whose parents have/had cancer or the children have cancer. It was just so wonderful to meet other volunteers and to feel like I was giving back something positive. Thanks for allowing me to share it as I will be involved with my group until the big event in Sept.

Sahalie...I am glad that you liked the pic and words as I hv always just loved the meaning(s)in that song and hoped you would as well. Glad that you and your brother had a great visit. Thanks for your kind words! You are such a treasured gift! Wishing cooler temps for you and Margaret. Thank you for the Polynesian descriptions and when I saw that pic(in Photobucket) I kept thinking that I had seen it before! Now,I rememb that you had posted it,right? You had such neat things you wrote and pics abt Bora Bora back in the late fall or early this yr? Also, would you check your PMs here as a friend asked me to see how you were and sent her hellos. Thanks!

Jaz...how are the temps there this wkend and what is happening? I liked the song today and do everyday. The groc store where we shop(my mother and I)has all these oldies. I keep thinking wow,the mgr must be really groovy. I was singing along to Sam Cooke and don't know much abt history...some of the other shoppers are prob looking for earplugs! I usu just sing softly and try not to scare anyone;just so neat to actually know the words and the artists! Have a great Sun!

Wings...thanks for the PM and I sent one back...long and wordy! I talk more in person or on the phone...scary! Thanks for the kind things you do/share.Love your sign! Have a great Sun...going to Starbucks and getting me a Caramel Macchiato and whipped cream! I am terrible...diet on Mon,again! LOL  Hope the one near you opens soon. I do like the atmosphere and the aromas...and I do not even like coffee! LOL I will think of you tomorrow and have one for both of us,OK? One of these days,I am going to visit your state as I have always wanted to see your area(summertime weather) and see you and Denise. So,go ahead and hide! Kidding!!!

Margaret...your ice cream sounds scrumptious! I think anything you cook sounds like a chef on the Food Network! I love to watch the neat things that they cook/bake,etc. Have a cooler day...hope the temps are less Sun. Got a lot of flowers that reminded me of your descriptions last wk...got tulips,Alstroemeria, lilies, etc in fresh flowers...no irises or tuberoses. I will keep checking as they usu have a good variety at that floral display. Going to put CA on my places to vis one day, too. It would be neat to take trips and now that we know people in diff areas,so much more fun...all of us would have a blast!

Neesie...glad that your DH and you had Fri together. I was teary-eyed just  reading abt your day, faith and everyone's words of comfort were wonderful.I hope that your gdaughter has a great vis and know she loves to come. Some of the little ones, today, were so cute and so sure of their likes and/or dislikes. I just laughed as this one precious little one would not give up her drawing! Her mother was getting frustrated and I said not a prob...she had done two of the drawings. It was too funny...of course she took the best one with her(like abt four yrs old...so funny!) Mother said she would retrieve it and I said at one time, yes,I would agree. Today,no...little one should keep her pic. Neat experience...and nice(just for a day)of remembering working w/little ones.

faith...beautiful photos and such neat pinks! I am glad that the huge turn-out was awesome. I know all abt the emotions and the pink and white balloons where we walked under the humongous archway...that was really amazing. Thanks for sharing such beautiful words...such an awesome feeling just being in the group! I still remember and get chills. Great accomplishments!

footprints/Debbie...so glad to see you! Congratulations to you and I know you were so proud of your accomplishments! The Beach Thread is behind you and so proud of you and glad you are here!

Deb and Amy...great to see both of you and hope your wkend goes well.

Hello...good night...exhausted and happy! Thanks to all of you...angels,bear and human friends! Have a wonderful Sunday and a great week!

    Iris-angel/bearlysane

Early morning sunrise at Myrtle Beach,SC...enjoy your Sun.,Beach Buddies!

Wow, Amy, I want one...or 4...of THOSE!  I'm not through treatment yet, either, but the May 2008 chemo group is having their treatments at a swim-up bar that I KNOW is next to the most beeeeeautiful beach.  You don't have to get a treatment to have a drink and the lifeguard is just fabulous...

Happy walking in the sand,Beach Buddies....we have our shoes off and now,we don't want to step on any sharp objects like broken shells or a little  crab that would nibble on some neat little toes! The water is still chilly in mid-May here at the NC coastal areas...Oh,some people have on shoes which is OK...no jellyfish stings for them today.

Have fun and if you see any neat shells...that would be swell. There are people out early taking walks before breakfast. There are a few boats on the horizon and the spinnakers in the water...awesome!

    Iris-angel/bearlysane and bearycolorful sailing...

Inspired by Sahalie and many others of you...how abt hang gliding this morning on the beach? I'm thinking I could swing by faster to Starbucks, what do you all think? I believe I can fly,I believe I can touch the sky...I believe I could have some interesting adventures singing the song and floating along...sounds like a plan! Ready for friends to hop on in and go cruising!

Good morning Beach friends.  Looks like everyone is having a great weekend.  Kudos to all the ladies who walked in the relays.  Now its time for a nice relaxing day by the ocean.  So...grab those towels and sunscreen and those nice cool drinks and relax.

    Surprise song of the day!

Winggirl -- I hate that you don't get to see the videos or hear the songs.  I'm going to try to put a cd together for you with the songs at least.

So it's been quite a week for me. Last week in DC for recital, Mon. worked w/my sis on our new book, then 3 different schools end of year faldarah, Fri was a gals only birthday party for a neighbor in 'my' neighborhood and then yesterday's emotional Komen gathering.

Whew. And that doesn't count all the wind-surfing, bar hopping and cabana boy chasing with you friends!! And a few thousand diaper changes -- or so it seems.

This week I have some special things too.... including me driving to Chicago on a quick hop. Have my first meeting with the 'new' team working towards the TV show as well as a meeting with the ed pub group regarding their next recording project.

Someone please have my head examined! LOL.

Is it too soon to start my Aruba count down? Calgon take me away.

Sahalie: my deepest and heart felt sympathy for your losses in May. I appreciate your willingness to share of these passings. I think of you as this robust teenager dashing about beachside, planning group frivolity and would never have guessed you to be a recent widow. It makes me even more amazed at your creative imagery and wordsmith capability. Beach hugs at your bungalow tonight.

Jasmine: your song selection for nEEsie brought me to tears. I have no idea how you find such spectacularly appropriate selections?? Your brain must be the size of a garage to store such a vast repertoire.... and then to be able to put your finger on just the perfect choice: priceless.

Iris: I am soooooooooooo intrigued with your description of your volunteer project regarding the art turned into quilts. I think that has to be about the neatest thing I've heard. What a treasure. I'd love to know LOTS more about it. Who's involved. Who makes the quilts etc etc. What a labor of love. It sounds PERFECT for your unique skill set. You've gotten me thinking about how I might use/donate my book. At the time the quilt is given to the child with cancer??? Keep me in the loop on that effort.

Wings: Congrats to DD on her summer placement @ camp. I spent about 10 summers full-time at a variety of camps. It's the best preparation for teaching that she could ever find. Is she a camp counselor or is her postition more of an administrator? I was the Arts and Crafts gal for a number of summers. I went ahead and submitted your application directly to the Harley cheerleading captain. With your looks you're a natural choice. I'll bet you'll be hearing from them in a jiff.

nEEsie: hope that you've made it thru the weekend in one piece. My DH is always lecturing me about not 'wishing away' any days. I'm forever saying, "Well, just as soon as Scott gets home & I can get back to our house and and and and........." DH always wagging his finger at me to appreciate each day for what it brings. Hopefully you've had enough reflection now to get moving forward again for another year. BTW: You need to figure out how to mount pics so everyone can see your gorgous grands. Denise's grand-daughter is destined to be a super model! in kindergarten!!

FootPrintsDeb: I'm so proud of you for making a contribution thru your walking -- despite the hardships to yourself in the process. I've just got to believe that ever bit we can do to inspire and encourage others is a benefit. I saw some VERY young gals @ our walk, some other's who were obviously in the midst of chemo etc etc. I think it keeps a 'human face' on this illness -- to have the public-at-large see us: in all shapes and sizes. Congrats. Hope that you're resting well today.

Margaret: Your friend's new enterprise sounds like the ultimate of lemons and lemonaid. Does she have a website? It's brilliant when people can take their challenges and improve others as a result. Do you think I can attend your cooking club as a cyber guest? I can now recognize the difference between spoons and forks, but if it gets much more detailed than that I'll need you to act as interpretor.

Amy: Is the applause still ringing in your ears? Have you sung each song in the middle of the night? My DD2 was hired to play in a high school's pit orchestra for the very same show -- just a couple weeks back, as they didn't have an oboe. That must be the show in vogue. Ironic!! We're BIG musical lovers. Just LOVE to see a high school show well done, with all of that energy!!

EyesOTex: welcome to our beach. We're always willing to share cabana boys with new friends. Splash right on in, that's the way our founder, Angel would want it.

I've gotten to the grocery store and reprovisioned our pantry with enough carbohydrates to run a platoon -- or one nursing mama and one exhausted grannie. AND I found Caffiene free, diet Doctor Pepper!!! So this is gonna be a great week. (so what's left you ask?)

gotta see if I can get photo bucket to cooperate today. have a few more pics i'd like you to see from yesterday......

sunscreen all around, DebC you'd better flip over -- it looks like you got all engrossed in that trashy novel and have lost all track of time.... a little self control sweetie....... Susan can you monitor her a little closer? she needs your supervision when she's got those cute little umbrella drinks

DH headed here to make us dinner -- may attempt to surprise him and be showered before his arrival, yeah right! Little spicey cakes is cranking up. I swear she goes from contented sleeping to full throttle wailing, without even a blink. She's gonna give us a run for the money. Very opinionated infant, this one.

Happy Sunday, everyone of you fun Beach Buddies!

I have been so bad...went out w/a friend to buy everything in Target...almost and had the most wonderful drink at Starbucks. It was this chocolate mint concoction with choc whipped cr and little choc mini-bits;not a thing like coffee and that is why it was so wonderful! Then, later on,I treated my friend to lunch at Applebee's and had this chicken with parmesan...too much! Well, there goes eating for the week, kidding! Having blood work Wed and I guess my triglycerides will max out!

faith...thank you for the kind words! It really was lots of fun and interesting. What an awesome group of volunteers, too. It is a small organization with a big heart and impressive achievements! I sent you a PM abt the project.

Hello to everyone...nice to meet you,Eyes O Tex! Welcome to the Beach!

    Have a nice evening,everyone!

    Iris-angel/bearytired and bearystuffed today! LOL

How many ways to say "HOT" Let me count the ways. Here goes. Monday through Saturday of the week for sure.

Today, our blessed ocean breezes swaying through the tree limbs new with the greenest of leaves with a backdrop of blue as the ocean.

    *

    *

Love, Love, Loving it sooooooo much!

    *

Iris, your choco, choco, mega watt choco drink put me into a sugar high just reading about it.

    Yummers.

    Chocolate and breezes.  So nice.

I think you have a brilliant idea with the sail kite so we can breeze right on into the Starbuck's for the choco/coffee what ever we want.

    *

Faith,  Thank you for your visual of me.

I am the proverbial 22 year old inside, just a tad beyond that.

I think we reach an age, a comfy happy zone and just stay in that age for ever.

I think it's due to my smiling and inward happiness that I have been able to get through my bc and the loss of my husband.

Thank you everyone for your kind words.

Wow, excitement plus for you on the book and TV front.

    Congrats and big kudos.

Margaret, I hope you are having these cool breezes down on the Peninsula.

I smile when I read about margaritas.

My niece is getting married this month and I am getting them a margarita making machine.

    It's tradition in the family.

    *

    Okay girls, meeting at ~

    Pretty close to Mario's place.

    *

    Salt or No?

    *

    Welcome dana.

    *

    Susan, where you be?

    *

I just want to say how proud I am of our beach babes who walked this weekend.

The energy is put to the test during these walks but reading about it makes me realize the energy is there during these times.

You have put yourselves out there for all of us.

    Those here now.

    Those who have gone before.

You are beautiful for walking. You are beautiful anyway.

    Thank you from my heart.

We have a big walk in Golden Gate Park in July.

    *

Pool boys at your house Wings?

    Uh huh.

    *

Jasmine, I can't wait to hear this coming weeks songs.

Music is soothing our souls you know.

Late afternoon here, I know it's evening on our east coast beaches and I want to wish each of you a comfy evening, comfortable weather, and a gentle night.

I know there is a TV show finale' on tonight somewhere so I'll check it out.

    Love to all.

Sahalie, your parrot reminded me of the bird that we had 50 yrs ago(nearly) that my father brought back from another country. Wow! Thanks for all the great pics and the things that you write. I know faith has penned books and you may have as well? If not,you should write as you have the flair for words and so artistic. Glad that it was cooler today and I would love to have some of those beautiful flowers! The blossoms look almost like a lotus flower...Golden Gate Park sounds like a beautiful setting for a walk-is that near Margaret and San Francisco? Never been there and one of these days...we,all,would have a blast! We would just have to rent a cabana and a choc shop, cabana boys, drink the Margaritas, etc! That would be some beach blast!

Yesterday,at the cancer event, there was this guy walking around like he was from "Pirates of the Carribbean" except that he did not look like Capt Jack(at all...) So,he allowed the audience to pet and talk to the bird...not me. He said how harmless he was...well-mannered bird, for real. Well,I am afraid of all birds as our pet Macaw(not its fault...will be honest)bit me nearly fifty yrs ago. That was because my nutty cousins who could run like the wind would annoy this pet. Well, old bearyslowpoke here was the one who was nearest the bird...yep-target for his din-din! He was taking a "bite out of crime" LOL

Jaz...love the song and how low is the ground and that is where I will stay unless pulled up! Those were the days to limbo...man,those kids(in my schl groups) could do that stuff and bend...awesome! Yesterday, they were having hula hoop contests and this teen could do sev at-a-time(no body,no hips, etc) I said yep! Been there, done that, had the red hula hoop and all the adults had trouble...fast forward...now,I am the adult who is hulaless...clueless,too! LOL

Wings...sent you a PM/novel...kidding! I appreciate all you do and thanks for the kindnesses. Great having such super Beach Buddies here. I love this thread and thanks to cherished angels/friends who helped begin it and are still with us. I never forget all of the friends who were here from the beginning and still with us on our walks.

Margaret...your ice cream sounds awesome. Is it possible to include the recipe or pm it to me? I think you have the coolest stuff and your cooking grp should do a recipe bk. Do grps do that as they do here for fund raisers in clubs and churches. What is your weather like today...cooler,I hope as you have had hot days like Sahalie was describing.

faith...I think that the grp where I volunteer has done this project like five yrs and the chairman was telling me the first yr how they did it with crayons that smeared. Those fabric markers were great--no smears, etc. The kids were fast and even a toddler could do it w/out any trouble as they had templates already made and all the squares set-up. If you want me to describe it in more detail, let me know. The site shows the works of the founder and the objectives...Pay It Forward which I love. That philosophy is one I try to do and hope that I can make small inroads.

Deb...good to see you and hope that your weekend and your girls are Ok. It should be soon the end-of-schl yr for both, maybe? Not sure if they have yr-round tracks in AK? Thinking of you!

Good to meet you Dana and tell us abt yourself. This thread was begun by a great person by the name of angel/charlene. Never,do I forget what a super person, she is, and what hard work was put into this thread and the awesome pics and friendships that are here!

Iris-angel/bearyheadachy but going to make it...too much food today, but it was so great! Anyone game for another choc chip whatever it was???

Sahalie, this was called a margarita mixer at Pbucket. Is it similar to the one you are going to give away? I think it would be fun at our "Beach Mixer"! LOL Anyone, ever go to those horrible boy meet girl mixers in college or high schl? More food...memories like that call for more food...the good stuff...chocolates and ice cream of our dreams!

Help I've fallen and I can't get up! Send the cabana boysWink

Jazzie - What a sweet gesture but you don't have to go to all the trouble of making a cd for me. My problem is I live in a rural community of about 2,000 pop. We have TWO stoplights and one of the lights MDOT is considering removing cuz lack of traffic.....stop laughing. We have one MCD'S, one Subway, a mom & pop restaurant and FOUR gas stations, ONE grocery store. Lots of empty factories that have closed cuz of economy. I live on a dirt road so it's pretty much "the sticks living". No fancy broadband or whatever is faster then country dial - up. Satellite internet may be available but DH claims is not worth the $$? So I am stuck in Hicksville w/ my slowwww dial up.

Faith - DD is teaching Drama at summer camp. She is so excited. They offered her the science program also but she is a little reluctant on doing both classes. She will find out more later. I agree w/ you great experience for her.

Iris - You tried a new coffee! I would like it in a decaf. Sounds like you had a great Sat. volunteering w/ the children. What a great project to be a part of. It must of been fun for you to hang out w/ children again. You are also a beary special teacher here on the beach. Your posts are like the lesson plan for the day. Loved the giant bear pix I liked Sahalie's idea about taking a pix w/ cuddle bear.

Sahalie - Your inspirational words of being able to find a comfy happy zone, inward happiness shines through in your posts.

DebC. - Grab a Margaretta come sit by Nessie and I in the shade. We know the cabana boys and they owe us favorsWink

Jaz,too funny...we are on same wavelength...Johnny B. Goodlooking;Orlando, too!! I think that I need to rent that DVD since I have Blu-ray tech now. I have a PS3 like the  kids and the controller thing;better deal at Best Buy as there were no Blu-ray players available. So,I bought me a "regular"remote control. I do not see how the thumbs go sideways and stuff...limbo thumbs, anyone?

faith, you look great on the DVD and Blu-ray,awesome! Those colors are wonderful!!!

Iris-angel/bearyinterested in watching Capt Jack or Orlando Bloom...I am never picky! Send in the men...to rescue me from Chocolateland!!!

Wings -- does your phone company offer DSL where you live?  It would be alot faster than dial up and probably not that much more expensive than what you have.

Thought you'd like to see the t-shirt that DD & DH created in my honor:

    and the flip side:

unfortunately it was so gosh-dang cold he had to wear a coat -- so you friends will be the only ones to ever see the shirt LOL it's the thought that counts............

I've got one more picture I want to share. Must go find it.
