U have a lot of hair! Awesome...0 -
Cyborg - I had long hair before chemo but have decided to keep it short because it's so easy. I think the curls make it easy to style so I've been getting it cut every six weeks to keep it neat. My avatar picture was taken after my last cut at end of March. I'm going this coming Saturday for my next cut. That's the only problem with keeping it short...it has to be trimmed much more regularly.

Hello everyone, Yesterday on Mother Day we traveled to Ohio to pick up my son from college. I only wore a light hat cause weather was warm could not manage the dumb wig. Well we had to stop so I could pee at a thruway exit, and I just ran in, not thinking, went to wash my hands and looked in the mirror and realized I had left my hat in the car. My very first accidental showing of the head! i have a shadow of growth, very thin on top, so dont really know what people were thinking, but it was a big hurdle for me, gonna not worry what people think. My son just rubbed my head.... his hair is longer than mine!

I also 'buzzed' my hair and used a lint roller.
Much easier and less irritating I think.
I'm now 11 days PFC
Thanks to all the gorgeous women posting their head shots, giving us all hope and encouragement!

For anyone who is, as I was, obsessing about and actually doubting whether or not her hair will regrow: IT WILL!! I am living proof. Super-fine, thin, pale, lame danish hair, getting thinner as I age even before diagnosis and chemo ... I thought it would never return. My last infusion was on February 4th, 2011. And today, I verified with my 7X mirror that every visible follicle now has a sprouting hair, regardless of how fragile and glass-like that strand may be!! So, for some of us, it takes 100 days, but it REGROWS!!

It has been four months since my last chemo and I now have almost an inch of hair on my head. My eyelashes did not fall out through chemo, but fell out as soon as chemo was done, I have no idea why. They are now almost back. The brows fell out sometime during chemo but I didn't notice at first (they were thin to begin with). One day, I noticed I couldn't seem to pencil them in and I looked weird. It feels really good to have the hair back. It makes a big difference in how you feel, to have the hair back. Yes, it came back gray. This was a big disappointment for me. I will get used to the new me. The old me is gone really. The me with nice skin and hair that was a wonderful rich reddish color.

I'm 7.5 months PFC. My hair is...just plain weird. I'm thrilled for even coverage, but the texture is both fine and wiry--very curly. It is still thin in the "male pattern baldness" temple points, and that's a bummer, because Michelle Williams' do actually is quite a bit of hair to get that shape. I never would have thought a lot of short haircuts now seem really long to me.
I think Tamoxifen has slowed my hair almost to a halt, it is bizarre. I had it cut about three weeks ago so the sides were shaped and the top thinned. I'm just totally bored with having no options other than the spikey thing. I never thought I'd say this, either, but I'm tired of having to compensate in order to feel/look feminine. URGH

I am supposed to start tamoxifen after all the chemo (4x) and rads are done. Am I not going to get my hair back cause of tamoxifen? Are the side effects to the mess so dicky that we will hairless and crippled? WTF.

My hair is growing in and is a full head now, but short and greyish. I am wearing my wig in public. I am about 5 months post chemo. I would like to have it coloured, but not sure where to start. Would most hairdressers know how to colour chemo hair, or is it too early to get it coloured. I am thinking of a light brown with blond highlights, or am I setting myself up for an outcome of green hair with yellow highlights

Gutsy;
That sounds really pretty. Can u go to u went before? Most hairdressers know how to keep the green out. Looking at your avatar, I thinkbyour choice in color would be very flattering.0 -
I am confused about the coloring of chemo hair... why is it difficult to color?? Does the hair not 'take" the color?

Cyborg, I had chemo (TC) and rads last year. Have been on tamoxifen for 10 months now. My hair came in great! Darker and with some curl, but it's in.
BDavis, I had my first haircut and a highlight 2 months ago almost exactly 9 mos. PFC. The color took great and I am actually loving my new short hair. I had long hair for years! (I need to update my profile pic...)
((Hugs to all))

So why not color at 4 months, 6 months??? Is it cause there isn't enough hair?

I had my last Chemo on November 8 and I colored my hair for the first time in Late January. My hairdresser used the same brown that time that she did before I lost my hair. She left it on twice as long but it turned out much lighter than before. The 2nd time she went a little darker and it took but still much lighter. The 3rd time was the charm and she went back to my color from 5 years ago. My hair was straight and thick before chemo and I kept it short. Now it looks thick but it is really thin, the curl just makes it look thick. The back is much fuller than the front. I will be so happy when the front fills in. My doctor told me I could color my hair at any time as long as I didn't use bleach. Hope this helps.

I colored my hair at 4 months. It took fine. It was a little redder than I wanted, and it took some effort to get it to a dark brown at 7 months (edited to say that I didn't try and fail all that time from 4 months to 7 months to get it darker - I just decided at 7 months to really figure it out at that appointment - it took 2-3 different treatments).
I don't think Tamoxifen affects growth - I've been on it since November and my hair is growing. It sometimes seems like slow growth to me, and I don't know what to blame that on (maybe Herceptin? I guess maybe Tamoxifen?) but its growing faster lately.
I'm excited to get highlights - I just have all over color right now. I've always been a highlights person, but with my hair so short I thought dark looked better - and that highlights look better with more length? I've never had them on short, so I don't know - would like to hear from others who have done them...

Iowasue I thought the pic was of you and some friends, you could be their sister! Good luck with the upcoming surgery.

From what I've read, Tamoxifen can slow growth. It is a chemotherapeutic agent, and can also cause thinning.

IowaSue: What a beautiful family you have!!! Where are you having your surgery?

Ladies, I would love to post a few pictures from my hair at one inch long to now which is chin length. If anyone can offer there computer skills, I seem to be challenged in this area!
Thanks!0 -
I'm starting to get bummed about the hair--- not so much the bald part but the fact that it may come back in good shape at all.

I am almost two months post chemo. My hair never did grow fast, but now I realize from these posts that it will a loong time before it looks remotely like it did before.I did have short hair for years, but started growing it longer about five years ago when my brother was diagnosed with melanoma on his neck. Living in Florida with fair skin isn't a good combination, so I thought the long hair would at least protect my neck from cancer. Of course I also thought that annual mammograms would keep me from getting invasive breast cancer! I guess I will wear wide brimmed hats for awhile. At least I am saving money on highlights for the time being.
Keep posting pictures of hair growth!0 -
my hair seems to be coming in thicker, but not longer in the last week. i swear it looks grey. i had that white baby fuzz at first. now it's all blended together.
oh well, it's hair. and i can always dye it in a few months if i want

My hair dresser colored my hair at 13 weeks. It came out more red. I think the hair itself is dryer, duller, hair shaft thinner and certainly much more gray. This must have an effect on the coloring.
I'm on Anastrozole. It's not slowing my hair growth at all. I'm also still doing herceptin as well. It's been 3 weeks since I colored it… my husband told me this weekend I should consider coloring it again. Before chemo I usually colored my part (touch up) 3 weeks after I first got it colored.Looks like I'm right on shedule.
IowaSue great picture. BTW looks like we have the same "stylist" I swear our hair is the same color and growing in the same way.
