Hair Hair Hair - Another question

I got very white hair, but it has been growing pretty good, it started to grow around my 4th Taxol.
I was so tired of the white so I colored it with drugstore ammonia-free brown color 3 weeks after chemo, but it came out as carrot-red in some of the strands, others didn't take at all.
Yesterday (6 week after chemo) I bought "Tins of Nature" Rich Copper Brown at Whole Foods and it came out really nice!!
My DH said I now look like Annie Lennox, but with red/brown hair :-)

bdavis, I think it just takes a while for our chemo hair to be ready for color. I colored mine at 7 weeks and it didn't take. Did it again at 10 weeks and it was better but still not great. I'm at 12 weeks now and I think I'll give it another try very soon. I don't know about anyone else, but my hair did not even feel like my hair at first. There was a strange texture to it. Now it seems to be feeling more normal--whatever that is.
IowaSue, you look great and your daughters are gorgeous!

Sandymess The texture is fur. I still have fur. I'm wondering if I should purchase my grooming products at Pet Smart0

I am 6 month PFC and some of my hair sticks up and some curls and one spot is kind of thin. But it's hair and it looks fairly normal. I will post pics soon.

Okay - I had my muga scan today and was running late, so I didn't do any of my crazy shenanigans with my hair. Literally just washed it and let it air dry. Then I put an elastic headband in and held the bangs back. It was super curly in public! First time! Felt sort of like the first time I went without my wig! But I actually didn't hate it. And so liberating not to have to do the 45 minutes of styling!

I will be 3 weeks PFC on Thursday and I am SO ready to see some hair. I'm like a hairless mole rat right now. No leg hair, no armpit hair, no down under hair, no eyelashes and the brows are just about all gone now too. It's so depressing!!! I think I need to order some new scarves for summer to brighten my mood. A little retail therapy . . . .

I'm going topless. I have maybe an inch. I colored it first with Natural Instincts but that really didn't take. The next weekend I did the Nice-n-Easy root color. That worked better, but not perfect. I do FanciFull where I have the most grey, it works fine. I'm east coast and it is way too hot already for wigs. I look like GI Jane and look like a girl playing for her own team (no offense intended for those of you who do - but I'd like a bf), but I'm not sweating my a$$ off.

what is wrong with the chemicals?

I used "Tins of Nature" Rich Copper Brown at Whole Foods and it covered my white chemo hair very good. (6 weeks after chemo)

Nancy91355;
I haven't finished chemo. I am looking ahead. I think I am trying to control because I'm not really in control... Well, maybe a little. But, I guess I need to be grateful -- and I am--- to be receiving tx. Can I tell you how stupid I think I am about worrying about my hair ? Thank god for this thread .0 -
Thanks, Nancy. I will put Bioten, Nioxin and B complex on my care list. I did buy some Ovation shampoo and will see if there is any improvement. Sometimes I wonder if these shampoos have any hormones or phytohormones in them. I have a cool wig picked out. It's mellow. Thinking about getting a crazy one too. I have been experimenting with different hairstyles while the hair is short. I like my short haircut now. Been coloring it for years and will

I know I mentioned this before but my Chemo binder said I could color my hair whenever I wanted. My NP confirmed this. I had no problem with my hair dresser coloring my hair with professional products at 13 weeks. He uses Framesi dye on my hair.

I am still holding off on colouring just yet. My hair still feels like fluff, but everyday I am snipping off the long crazy fluffy ends as I find them sticking up in all sorts of directions. I am on a BC survivor boat team and all the ladies are telling me that by the end of a year, my hair will back to normal texture but the colour is "iffy". Many of them started off with the grey and it eventually returned to their pre-chemo colour, while others stayed with the salt n pepper look and either accepted it, or coloured it.
Depending on how it looks mid-summer I will likely colour it before I go back to work...tentatively looking at August 1st. Cripes...that's a year off!

Haven't been here in a while but trying to catch up. Love everyone's pics. Thanks for sharing. I am now 9.5 months PFC and stil have pretty short hair. I have had a couple little trims though. Took a tip from MBJ a few weeks ago and bought John Frieda's Go Blonde shampoo which gradually lightens your hair. It worked great for me. Unfortunately, we are having some early season heat and high humidity and geesh, the curls and waves are going everywhere. Haven't had any luck keeping things straightened so decided to just go with it for now. My hair was always stick straight so this has been a real challenge. I'll try to post a pic soon.

Watch out for the Biotin, I am becoming convinced it causes me to grow excessive facial hair. Nothing I can't take care of with a pair of scissors, but my conclusion is that's definitely what's causing it. I stopped taking it for a couple weeks, then started again. I am hairy again now. I am not positive the hair on my head grows any faster, but it certainly helps with face, legs, and pubies.
The Garnier Fructis products are good for curly hair. I always had curly hair and found them to work pretty well. Also the Matrix products but I hated the smell. If you want to go curly, Curls Rock is good. I love the Sedu flatirons.
Have any of you had issues with nails? I kept mine polished the whole time, but my big and pinkie toe on the right could easily be pulled off. I also broke my thumbnails very low, but they are growing pretty well. My toenails seem to grow slowly, so if I lose my big toenail, I swear it would take a year to grow back...and this is now sandal weather! Does anyone know what's underneath? I'll leave them attached for as long as I can, but I go to the beach a lot and am now worried about the sand. LOL I should find something more important to worry about!!

Thanks for all the tips ladies. No peroxide, semi-permanent yes,. Yes, I think I do have to find another hairdresser. The one I went to was good, but there were language barriers. Not a problem when all you want is the same colour as last time and a trim.

Hi Girls - just checking in after a long time. I am now 14 months PFC and I have plenty of hair - came back just as thick as it was before. The curls were driving me crazy, but I can now manage them better after a couple of cuts and the daily use of Ringlet by Redken. I had my first colour last December - blonde streaks. Then again about 6 weeks ago. The bleach doesn't seem to have done any damage at all and it's nice to be me again. My DH said "I've got my Susie back" which was so sweet. A girl at work found a photo of me when I went back to work last July - OMG - no wonder I was nervous going in that first day. It's great to look in the mirror and see my old self!!!

dawn31337 I had/have serious toe/finger nail issues. I was one of those "rare" people got had lifted nails. I lost some toenails, one had to be removed. My fingernails are growing out but some are still a little lifted and hurt just a little. Toes look pitiful but also growing slowly. Fingernails should be good in 3-4 months. Toes I think will be more like 9 months to a year.0

I am 7.5 months from last chemo and I lost both of my big toenails a month ago. I just lifted them and underneath were short new nails. Did not have problems with other nails (I was given frozen gloves during chemo).
I love my curls, I hope they would stay. I am taking Biotin, had some facial hair couple of months ago but not anymore. I ma also using Rogain and Biotin shampoo and conditioner (organic).
I did not color my hair yet but I do not have any grays.

Lago, only my pinkie toe turned purple, but my big toe is now broken halfway across maybe 1/4" from the cuticle. The pinkie toe didn't break, and none of them really turned gross, but I could definitely pull them off. My fingernails are mostly fine. My thumbs broke pretty far down, but I kept them glued for as long as I could, and now they're not broken to the quick. I know I'm going to have a problem with the one big toe. Did yours actually come off?
LOL I'm brave enough to go topless but I'm worrying about a toenail. This sh!t makes you nuts, doesn't it??

I had my 2nd halaven treatment and asked the PA when the hair is going to go and she said it is gradual normally, will just thin out, she said I will know. I told her I am not planning on doing the wig bit again. I was talking to one of the ladies in the treatment room who has very fine, hair sort of like you would see on an infant who is just growing hair, scalp very visible. She was telling me how she hated wigs and could not look at herself in the mirror when she was bald so she just stopped looking and I am thinking Wow, and she thinks she has hair now? I have no idea what her hair was like before but she looked almost bald to me now. Guess I am spoiled because mine has always been thick. Anyway, hair is not going to be my big issue cuz it was not the worst of the SEs I have had. My eyelashes still need to be plucked out in certain areas since they grow inward..that's a PIA....had two removed on Monday and it was only right before my catartact surgery on April 22, that I had the other offending ones plucked out on both eyes. My eyebrows came out after chemo and I think fell out more than once and are only now almost back to normal.....were always super black and people thought I used eyebrow pencil on them, but I got those black thick brows from my mom. Now I have gray mixed in them so they are not as dark and I really dont have to pluck them much at all.....places I did pluck just sort of failed to regrow so that is a nice thing. Hair down under has remained thin, on my arms I am just as hairy as an ape which I always was, but underarm hair never did come back.
I am with Lago on the nails....mine were bad....beyond bad. Not only did they lift and several came off they were infected and smelled just awful. I had an appt with the cardiologist this morning and she commented on my nails...asked if chemo had done that!?!?! And here I was thinking they are looking almost normal and they almost are except for about 1/4 of my thumbnails on the end where it is still yellow and sort of looks like I have a fungus on the end and they are very thick where it is like this and difficult to cut with the nail clippers. Maybe they are just so much better, I think they look normal. The last time I had abraxane was July 22 2009 or somewhere around there so it has been close to 2 years that they have been growing back. My toenails which I completely lost will never look like toenails again....they are just a mess.

I feel like a super dope, but really cannot figure out the loading of photos. I have some stuff on shutterfly, and without making one of their websites, just can't figure this out! Are there directions on this site?0

LtotheK - try using Photobucket, it's the only one I have had luck with. You don't need to build a site, just creat a login & password, you can upload pictures and just copy the http link over to here....use the little "tree" icon at the top of the posting box.

Aha! Many thanks to you! I thought I would add to the general encouragement--wanted people to know we are all different growth-wise.

Here's me at almost 8 months PFC. I've had a cut to shape the sides. We are all different--my growth has been slow, and the texture is totally bizarre: thick, but cotton candy and curly!

Looks good!! I agree with you on the texture....cotton candy...that's it exactly.

I had the typical hair pain/soreness when my hair started to fall out. I am now done with chemo and wonder if I will have any signs that the hair is getting ready to return? How many weeks until I can expect to see something? I am now 2 weeks post treatment, maybe 2 more weeks?? Love to hear from anyone.

For me, last chemo 4/28/10. I started taking Biotin a few days later. By early late May, early June I started seeing some growth. When I went in for surgery 6/21/10, my scalp was covered with very short stubble. By September it was about 1 inch long. I went back to work with a cap and wore it for a few months. By November, I ditched the caps too.
Just came up on one year PFC, Hair is almost 5 inches on top and wavy, curly mess, but I love it. Only one mini trim so far. Have colored a few times at home. Should also mention was on Herceptin till 12/15/10. It did not seem to slow my hair growth at all.
Christine47 - happy hair regrowth!
