Lago - great story! I have that happen often now that I'm going topless everywhere. To some people who I don't think need to even know about the cancer I just say "thanks." And to others who could actually hear about it through the grapevine I kind of feel bad - here they are complimenting my "sassy" and "fierce" and "jazzy" new style, and I tell them "I actually went through chemo last year." They always look like they feel so bad!
And I have no doubt that your hair looks good enough for him to forget about your scarves/cancer - you really do rock that short look!
Makingway - I think the majority of people here have already lost their hair. Not exactly the forum for discussing how to try to keep your hair. The Cold Caps forum is perfect for that though.

Hi ladies!
Does anyone have any recommendations on hair products that both tame the Chemo curl and the poof (my hair is growing up still, not down)? I'm 7 months PFC and still wearing my wig but I am ready to retire it soon but I just need to find the right hair products! I have been using nioxin the whole time before and after chemo, and it has really helped my hair grow back thick.0 -
Lago and Saralmom....I can completely relate to your experiences. I am getting alot of compliments on my short hair cut (PFC 12/29/10 went topless 4/8/11). It surprises me that these people that I know actually think I had it "cut" this short. I sometimes want to just say, "Hey, don't you realize I had chemo and was bald a few months ago, this is all I've got"...but then I don't want to make them feel bad...imagine that. All that we have been through and we don't want "them" to feel bad....Oh well, it is really nice to get compliments on your hair. It helps you to walk out the door each and every morning proud that we are persevering through it all. You both look great with short hair. I think it is such an easy style. I may just keep it short, that is, after I actually get some bangs. I have been wanting to post a few pictures, will work on that soon. Take care!0

It's been 1 year less 2 weeks since I first started chemo. I just got my first hair cut and color in a year. Was holding out for as much growth as possible before getting sick of my shapeless wavy shag.

dutchgirl6-I'm familiar with the topic.I did not intend to have people second guess their treatment decisions. I understand their frustrations with all they're going through. I truly do.
bdavis- As you said, "I asked, you replied". I could have left it at that, but I feel cpmpelled to stop the misinformation, which you presented, to continue in perpetuation. I'm sorry. I didn't intend to upset you.
saralmom-My intentions were not to hurt anybody's feelings. If just baffles me why Oncologists aren't sharing this with their patients. The data's there, and it's not hard to find.
I wish you all well!

bdavis no i did not use the lash or brow gel. My brows and lashes thinned but did not all fall out.
SKD my hair is growing up too and it's curly, i think I am going to have a white girl fro.
Lago love how people forget the scarves. Once you look better it out does all the past. I am sure all they see is that beautiful smile.

SKD - I use a variety of products to tame my hair and striaghten it some. I use Marc Anthony straightening cream or Redken 06 sheer striaght depending on what I have at the moment. I also blow dry with the flat attachment, and use a tiny .5 inch flat iron and then wax it all into place - I like the Short Sexy Hair Frenzy for that.
It takes a LONG time to do all of that, and now that it's getting warmer and more humid here in MI, I have only been doing all of that on days I work or go out. Otherwise, I'm just letting it be curly and wearing wide elastic headbands to hold my "bangs" back. I don't hate the look. And I think my hair likes having a break from all the pulling and prodding and burning!

I was walking in our neighborhood ( only six spread out houses) without my wig and a neighbor walked by me and said " you must be the new neighbor, I'm Linda, nice to meet you" and she shook my hand. I said. Linda, I'm Tiffany! She was so embarrassed and kept saying I can't believe I shook your hand and introduced myself!! The thing is- we don't have any new neighbors!

That is very funny Tiffany. I was surprised people always recognize me. I had long dark hair in high school and the past 10 years i had gone very blonde only to now have very short dark hair. But it's still me underneath it all.

I don't think the guy felt bad when I told him because I really do look fine… actually a lot healthier than many of the people in my building. He asked how I was doing. I said "great. The icky part is all over." I think it's when you start talking about negative that they get all down, weird or feel bad. When you shoot back with positive vibes and messages people seem to be happy for you.
I sent some photos from the wedding this weekend to my mom. She's a little freaked out because I look so much like her at a younger age with the short hair. In the past we all though I looked even more like my grandmother (her mom) but now that my face thinned out I look more like her.

Ok all, here's my hair update at 15 weeks PFC. It's actually "messy" lol!! This year I have something new to add to my appearance.....FRECKLES! Ah well...
0 -
Marjie you look awesome in short hair. Freckles, hmmm so I can start calling them freckles.
So is that your port in the middle of your chest? Never saw that before. Mine is on the left side. Not sure if you noticed it in any of the photos I posted before.
0 -
Lago - yes, I'm insisting they are freckles lol! That is my port right smack in the middle...okay, just slightly to the left. I actually looked closely at your pics for your port, so you're definitely lucky - mine sticks right out for all to see unless I make the effort to cover it, and honestly, I can't be bothered. You can see the line going right up into my artery as well - sometimes I get an evil thrill at the thought that maybe I'm grossing people out0
-
Yes I noticed the line too. I don't bother to cover port up. I'm more self conscious about my giant foobs that are located just below my neck
But I have juvenile port so it is smaller. You aren't imagining things. I'm one of the "little people" who got the kiddie port.
Have you considered a temporary tattoo? Maybe an eye. That would freak people out for sure.
0 -
Hmmmm - I 'm not a big person at all, perhaps a juvenile port would have been better but it was never offered. My DH says it's like a giant button and he just wants to push it and see what happens - he is official under threat now "back off!!"

-
lago - lol, love the button! and you are definately my computer hero0
-
ha ha ha ha Lago your are a riot!!
Just came from physical therapy. I just need to stretch some more to get full range of motion doing well. My knee got twisted in zumba so can't zumba until that heals waaaaahhhhh
0 -
lol, Lago! You are too funny!!
Carrol, glad to hear you are doing well. How do you like zumba? I'm going to give it a try starting next Wednesday. Is it really difficult?
0 -
sandymess I adore zumba. My gym has different levels but i get a great workout in all of them. The key is the music and the moves are fun it does not feel so much like exercise. I'd say the first few times i had trouble getting the steps, i am very uncoordinated but after that it was fine. Best to just follow the feet at first then add the arms. But i think i twisted my knee not sure how. There is a lot of pivoting in zumba so that may have done it or could be from step or body sculpting. But gotta be careful and let it heal for a while.0

That port looks a lot like mine, but mine is more to the right and my old boyfriend, who was not really a boyfriend at a time, but still a good friend who wanted to be with me when I went to treatments and stuff said when he saw it for the first time said real matter of fact like, It looks like doorbell......and it does. Marjie and Lago, I think both of you look terrific with your short hair. I actually got move compliments on my super short post chemo hair than I did on cuts I had paid a lot of money for. The very lst time was when I took my Dad to the airport and figured what the heck, who am I going to see there? and this woman in line behind us said I really like your hair. I said Why thankyou, but was thinking to myself You have got to be kidding. However it made me smile and I smiled all the way home and came right in and told my husband, This woman at the airport told me she liked my hair! It gave me enough confidence to stop wearing the wig the next week and I was amazed at how many other people complimented me. I sort of think that we give off an aura of confidence with hair like that and maybe they really think we did get it cut that way intentionally and wish they had the guts to try something bold like that. I know my friend Lee looked absolutely beautiful with her new hair, but she of course did not think so and has since colored it and is letting it grow. I am not sure what I will do this time and still have time to think about it since it is not coming out in handfuls, but I definitely need to start staying away from black and dark colors since I get these little piles on my shoulders. I am going to look for Lee's pic....she won't care if I post it since she knows I write as ask advice for her on here.
Zumba!! I am uncordinated anyway and cannot imagine myself doing something like zumba especially with neuropathy. But I know people who have lost up to 20 lbs on it plus lots of inches. It is definitely a total body work out.

Marje- My port was on my right side. But, it was placed pretty close the center of my body and you could see the tube line also. Basically, my chest looked like yours. Mine was the smallest one the nurse had ever seen on an adult. Yet it stuck out big time. It's gone now. all I have left is a bruise and the scar. Hope you can say goodbye to yours soon !

Love this thread!!
I still have no hair, I am so impatient, now 3 weeks and 2 days since last chemo. Quess I should have used the cold caps, LOL.
Hey, does anyone know if the "freckles" go away?? I look like I did when I was 10, and I did have freckles.
Marybe, your friends hair is adorable.
My port is on my left side, not to obvious. My badge of courage.

Marby love your friends hair.
About the port. I did not even know if I would need chemo but asked them to put a port in during my bmx. I figured if I don't need it they can take it out later and I will be happy. But as I figured I did need chemo. I then had it taken out when my TEs were placed. No extra procedures or scars. Thanks to whoever gave me the idea on this site is where I read about doing that. I read all the posts and take notes to take my docotrs throughout this journey. My doctors all felt I was very well informed.

Carrol I asked about the port during surgery and they said no because I was have so much done already. (I had the TE's placed too). The nurse said something about not knowing if I would need chemo since I hadn't talked with the onc yet… ya right HER2+ huge tumor and no chemo. I knew what was coming.
So guess who else likes my hair. @$#%& bird in the park. I was doing my first power walk in a long time (finally felt up to it today) and this small black bird starts going for my head. I didn't get pecked but I had to keep brushing it away then finally run away. I think it wanted my hair to build a nest or something. Gee and I thought Robins and Blue jays were mean. Next thing I know all those Canadian Geese in the park are going to attack me.
Hmmm I might have to wear a hat in the park from now on.
0 -
Lago - you made me laugh SO hard and now I'm giggling at the thought of you dashing through the park with birds diving at your lovely head . Take it from a Canadian....general rule is don't look the geese in the eye!!
Carrol - I have read a few posts where people had their port put in while in surgery. I had to be semi-awake for mine because the doctor said he would have to ask me questions and at one point I had to hold my breath while he inserted the line. I don't remember much...a lot of pressure, he asked a few times if I was okay, and then of course to hold my breath. I also remember the nurse asking if I would like a little more sedation....ummm YES!

Yeah real riot. Told my friend on skype. she's cracking up too

Sorry, Lago, but it really was funny....even if it was not for you. since I am afraid of birds and never have gotten over the Alfred Hitchcock movie, I probably would have had a heart attack right then and there.
0 -
Marybe, I am like you. Never got over that Hitchcock movie and am terrified of birds! I would have screamed my fool head off and probably had a stroke. But Lago, you really painted a hilarious picture. hee hee I thought you were going to say that the bird pooped on your head. Yes, definitely wear a hat next time!0
