Can we have a forum for "older" people with bc?

You gals are soooooooooooo funny. I'm off to bed because I'm whipped but it will definitely be with a big smile on my face from all the comments. But, I'm steering away from any mirrors between me and my bed or that smile will slip right down the back of this whale.

Just dropping in to say hi before I am off to the shower and finding clothes to wear to work tomorrow. Long day today.....Started around 9 a.m. and it's 9;15 p.m. now....maybe I'm trying to fit too much into one day.......hmmmm
See you all later -- yawn, yawn, yawn.

Claude, are you wearing just snowshoes in the snow for Ms December?
Melissa, wouldn't that be a blast and a dream come true if we could all get together.
From what I could find a herd of whales is called a pod, herd, or school. I go for we are a pod! We are the pods, mighty mighty pods, everywhere we go people want to know who we are so we tell them, we are the pods mighty mighty pods.
Cfreak, so glad to have a twinkle in your mom's eye. Love you guys, thanks for keeping me sane

Just back from a walk and should be making dinner.
I keep imagining different scenes for a calendar - not sure what month because of course our seasons are opposite of yours.
Dar - I had chemo and radiation as I am Stage 3c with what they refer to as poor prognosis BC. Single mastectomies are very common here because most medical treatment is through the public system and most doctors see bilats as unnecessary. Just as only 20-30% have reconstructions, thats because its hard to do unless you have private insurance. Don't get me wrong, treatment is of a world class standard but some things are used only when really needed. There is a perception that many in the US are over treated and over tested.
Hopefully tomorrow will get DH to a travel agent. We are doing a big trip May/June and will be coming through the States. Intend to visit friends in Denver Co and Columbus In, then my aunt in Pottsville Pennsylvania on our way back from the UK. We also hope to go through Canada on the way up, have friends in Vancouver and Toronto who we would like to vist but are not sure if we will be able to fit it in. Have to be in Edinburgh on May 20. It should be great. Anyway I will let you know dates later and if anyone lives nearby it would be great to meet. Some of my chemo group are coming to Denver and I will meet others in Pennsylvania.
Must get dinner, will make a salad, put some potatoes on and throw some meat on the BBQ.
Sleep well and keep smiling. Remember that pods of whales support each other.

Hi gals, just to explain about our healthcare in New Zealand. We have a choice either we can have private medical insurance or every person is entitled to free hospital care,Generally we pay to see doctors or specialists privately and most major or emergencies are handled in public hospitals. This is my first experience of the system other than an auto accident. I am very impressed, great surgeon, home visits by district nurse every day when drain in place, and then yesterday breast care nurse visited at home . My taxes contribute to this system, makes me feel better about all the working years,

Spar2, It is warming up so nice here I probably could go with just the snowshoes...however if I only wore the snowshoes the sale of the calendars would probably go down...might have to wear a little cute, furry skirt on the bottom..will have to think about that......Claudia

My cold is going to run its course - later today I am going to the Pharmacy and buy everything they have for colds! Sleep is a good healer but not if you wake up every hour.

Morning Pods! We are the pods, mighty mighty pods! That is so funny! On this calendar thing, I want to be the" Tomato Girl In The Garden" (standing there in the dirt with a hoe in my hand, & wearing an apron & green plastic boots)! That's what I will be! I will be out there growing tomatoes for all you, from my garden! I might wait until it warms up a bit...... So let me know if there is room for me....... Jeannette

You women are just hilarious! Speaking of hilarious.....a group of the bowling and bunco ladies went and saw the movie "It's Complicated" yesterday afternoon. We laughed the whole way through it. I don't do alot of movies but every so often we have a girls' night and this one was certainly a goodie!
Kathleen, hope you get to feeling better soon. I haven't had a cold but I developed a fever blister (cold sore) in the corner of my top lip. Four years ago I would have been really upset with this little visitor but this time I just shrugged it off and went out looking ugly without any second thoughts. It was just so minor in the scheme of things. Colds.......I hate them and feel miserable with them but we can handle those colds. We're pretty wise warriors! Hang in there.
Claudia, how far north are you located in MN? My son lived in Deerwood for a few years. It was just a little town in the northern half of the state. The scenery was gorgeous up there with the woods and lakes, but the year I went up for Easter, they had a snowstorm.
Well, I'm off to get something done around here. Today's an "at home day" so I'll probably check in on one of my self-appointed breaks!
Have a good one......
Rita

Do you suppose we could set a card table up in Walmart to sell our calendars??? Just like the Girl Scout Girls sell cookies. Now we need to write a fight song for the Pods.

Good AM Everyone!
Carole, all this food talk has me wanting Frogmore Stew. It's a low country boil with potatoes, onions, corn on the cob, Bay seasoning, polish sausage and shrimp. We often have it on the 4th of July. I don't mind the shrimp heads and shells but usually clean them for the sake of more squeamish guests. Less messy too, if we're eating inside.
I think chemo was not recommended for me because of my low mitosis score. Even my report from Genotech said chemo would not benefit, all the while with an intermediate score. It took me some time to wrap my head around that. Also my ER+ score was 99% so my onc said I would benefit mostly from Arimidex. Hope they know what they are talking about!
Has anyone heard anymore about Arimidex going generic in 2010? I have heard yes and no. I was going to start ordering it from Canada but if the new legislation goes through that will be outlawed.
I just bought a simple Pilates DVD and have started it. I really think it is helping with some of my stiffness and tightness. I am, so far, only doing the Flexibility exercises but in two days I feel a difference. But talk about a whale out of water... you should (not!) see me getting up and down off of the floor! I try to do them when DH is not around as it is so embarrassing.
Ok... I am in for the calendar. The "right" whales come to our little stretch of coast to birth in the spring. You see single mother and baby pairs close off shore. So exciting. You always know when one is here as people pile up along the beach to get a look. That and a space launch creates quite a ruckus. So I can pose behind a Right whale! Even a new baby should be adequate :-) They are usually here in March so that's my month! Don't think I need something as big as a space shuttle. Yet.
Wishing everyone a great and healthy and carefree day.

Sorry! I think I have blurred the lines between two different threads. Carole was talking about food in another area and I got confused. Must be all the blood leaving my brain due to the Pilates work out.

I AM 61 ,WILL TURN 62 IN MAY, SO I QUESS I QUALIFY AS OLDER, BUT I DO NOT THINK OF MYSELF AS. I AM AND HOPE TO BE BACK, STILL WORKING AS A HAIRDRESSER AND LOVE MY WORK AND CLIENTS. I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER THIS PAST DEC AND JUST HAD MY LUMPECTOMY TWO DAYS AGO. I HAVE THE DRAIN AND WILL NOT KNOW ABOUT THE TWO LYMPH NODES TAKEN OUT AND MY TREATMENT FOR A FEW MORE DAYS. I KNOW RADIATION FOR SURE. I AM TRYING TO STAY POSITIVE AND THAT MY LIFE WILL CONTINUE AS WELL AS POSSIBLE, AS I BATTLE THIS THING. ANY ADVICE?

oH i MISSED A BUNCH OF POSTS- Claude you can be peeking out from behind a snow fort with the tips of the snowshoes showing or with one foot from the knee down showing the entire SS- what do you think- I love the tomato girl idea Jeannette, Pam the baby whale idea is perfect - you can pose with the whales in the back ground and a BIG BEACH Umbnrellacovering you are you peek out- if that appeals to you. We may have to do a 18 month calender as we have such get idea and so many contributors. Dotti- we want you to join the calender pods and you can be the caretaker- in a nurses cap (I will provide your props) stethoscope, we need to give you a laugh along the way as you mission is heavy, and we know you and mama will make it just fine. Love ya PODS!

DAR, accordian would be perfect for a month in the calendar, hey we can make a two year calendar.
Now if I see a skinny person with a small butt, I think, boy they must really be dumb.
Sitting up a table at walmart sounds perfect. We could donate proceed to bco. I think the whole world would get a big kick out of it.
Jakhope, you came to the right place here, hope you join our golden pod. What your going through is hard but you can do it. Be sure and let us know about the lymph nodes. If they are neg you should just have the lumpectomy and rads but if they are positive you probably will have to do chemo. Depends on your team of drs. We will be here to support you whatever you are going through.
All you golden pods have a great day. love ya.

Uhhhhhhh - "we" and "sane" don't really belong in the same thought!
Hi Jakhope! Don't worry about the pods here, they occasionally (like each time they post) get beside themselves. Falling over ironing boards or trying to drive a wheelchair down stairs...
Now me, however, really am sane so read their rants but only follow moi!

Hi, Melissa I am not the poster with BC mother. I am a Kiwi who asked for advice about a B and D cup size after lumpectomy, valuable advice means that is being resolved.
For the calendar I think I could have 2 of my dogs. My husband and I have bred and shown Lhasa Apso dogs for 30 years and a fluffy on each side would be great cover. I am probably the least likely person to ever wear nurses garb, too selfish! Maybe thats why I am totally in awe of most medics but especially nurses.
Love this list and am enjoying the image of a pod, at 60 not older hopefully wiser

ALYSON, On your trip are you going to be near Ohio? That would be something to meet up with one of my friends on this site. You mentioned Columbus, but not in Ohio? you really helped me in my decision about the mastectomy. I feel much better about having a single instead of a bilateral. Realize down the road I will probably have to have the other removed but not now. I am awaiting the day I will be able to refer to all of this as BC, rads, onc, and every initial I am still learning. Love to all DAR

JAKHOPE.
In Florida 61 or 62 is like a 20something elsewhere. :-) We are just kids!

JAKHOPE....Yes, we are mostly normal "seasoned" gals! And I use that term loosly...(is it loosley?) Damn, I hate when that happens...See, if you are "older" that means you can say whatever you want here! And congratulations on your surgery! The hardest part is now over! Believe me! Most of us have already "been there, done that!"...So you can talk to us about anything!
Do you want to be in our "calendar"? It's sort of imaginary, but any suggestions are welome here!
Just don't report us to any authorities....We will deny everything....
Honestly....let us know how you are doing! Jeannette

Alyson, what a great trip you're planning! Hope everything works out perfectly for you. If you were coming anywhere close to where I live, I would definitely want to meet you. I admire your spirit.
Pam, dh and I attended an rv rally in Savannah a few years ago where a low country boil was served. It was delicious and just as you describe, with veggies and shrimp and sausage. I believe the shrimp were still in the shell but did not have the heads on. People throw in all kinds of veggies and sausage when they're doing a crawfish boil, too. Potatoes and corn on the cob are the most common.
Our calendar will be perfect for Christmas presents next year!!!

Hi everyone....I'm here late again this evening though I normally am late on the days I work. Yesterday I worked at home, went out around town and fed feral cats, went to House of Hope and did volunteer work for two or three hours ( lost track along the way ) went to my friend Maggie's and worked there for a couple of hours -- rushed home to pick up hubby, then back to the other far side of town to have taco salad at the Moose -- then back home and cleaning my kitty screen room. Totally missed a 6 p.m. meeting I was going to try and get too -- just didn't work out. Some Wednesdays get like that -- sort of take off while I'm not looking and no matter what I try I don't catch up.
Claudia....I live on a lake as well.....down a country lane and in the woods. We have been here at the lake for 11 years, but only in this house 7. My brother-in-law bought our other house just about the time we found this one.
Jakhope....glad you found us here -- we are all well seasoned and got through this with the Good Lords help and each others hopes and prayers for us. We want to help you get where we are. So welcome aboard.
I'm going to go find my recliner. I'm done in. Hi to everyone else. Your all very special VIPs -----very important pods. Love ya.
Hugs, Jackie

Hi, can I join you all? Just found this thread and think I qualify as far as age goes (62).
I have been a member of BCO since '05 and had the gamut (left mast, TAC, radiation) and am still dealing with the Arimidex which I feel is getting the best of me some days....oh well, hopefully I can get off it in a year. I get "power surges" still and whoever said that it means the Arimidex is working, I hope they are right !!
I am also still working full time and my tail really drags at the end of the day. Usually by Wednesday I feel like my feet are bloody stumps because of the lingering neuropathy.
I have to read more of the posts you have all contributed so that I can get a better feel for what's going on.
Later, ladies and hugs to all.....

Jakhop and susie14 welcome! We love each other and newbies- we are sane and serious when we need to be, care about one another and comfort one another and then there is the "really sane" side that is joyful, fun, zany, some of us could easily get in trouble and if we all got together physically in one place I am sure we would make the paper. Personally I think that would be just fine- most of us have probably worked far to hard all ready- Jackie what are we to do with you ?- you are busy and must love what your do. Someone needs to feed those kitties, thanks for all you do.
Wal-Mart- great idea, PODS = perfect, Dotti- I have Pekes, sorry I got mixed up---oh well, remember Kathleen's pie chart?- LOVE you pups too. Jeanette- that cartoon made me howl!
Take care gang.

Claude1944,
I have heard of Holland, MI! Heat under the sidewalks downtown! Now that might make winter in Michigan tolerable!
You ladies on the lakes in Illinois... are they frozen? We live on a salt water lake (a cut off of the Intracoastal waterway). The lake has not frozen but it has been cold enough that there are lots of little dead fish in the water. The seagulls are feasting on them. They won't pick them up off of the bank but as the tide goes in and out they will eat the fish that float. Thank goodness or else the smell could get bad. What happens to your fish when it gets so cold? What kind of fish do you have?
Ritajean,
It is supposed to warm up here. Low 70s, some rain this weekend. When is your trip to Florida? Wishing good weather for you.
Melissa,
If I ever have to go on to have mastectomies I am stealing your "personality" trailer. I LOVE IT! You are so witty.
Wishing a good day to all,
pam

Hugs and Smilies and Blessings and Peace and restful sleep and speedy healing, Nancy

Good morning Jakhop & Susie! Yes, we occasionally stray from the business at hand, but it is so FUN to talk about other stuff too sometimes...See, if we couldn't laugh & be silly, then we would be left with our own thoughts, & as you know, they are awfully scary at times! We've all been through those awful dark times with this cancer, & been so afraid...... And all we want are answers & support to help us through this.....and you can find it all here!
When your family & friends are just not wanting to hear about your latest fears, that's what we are here for. If you click on each of our names, you can see, & almost "feel" where each of us are coming from, & how far we've come! And when we think we are "done" with this cancer stuff, we usually find another decision, we have to make, & still more waiting...or more treatments, & it's our "breast friends" here, that help us through this!
So if we occasionally sound like we are "raving mad"....It's because sometimes we are just so happy that a lot of this is behind us, & we climb out of our old skin, & behave like silly girls again! Someday, we are all going to get together on some street corner, & dance & sing & just celebrate our lives & friendship, & eat hot dogs & drink margaritas! .....
Isn't it fun to read about where the gals live? I mean the trees, & forests & rivers & all? It all sounds so peaceful! The biggest body of water here in Denver is my tub!
we are the pods...the mighty mighty pods
