Carole, thank you for the Puffin update. It is heartbreaking to know that she went from a vibrant, active life with such zest for birdwatching to being incapacitated as Illinoislady said, seemingly overnight. I am so glad she got that last cruise trip with her friend in before all this happened. I will miss her presence and willingness to identify birds for us. I hope her death is peaceful.

I am also hoping that your friend and Illinoislady's SIL's brother seek refuge from Milton. I heard a report today on the water surges that explained a 9 foot surge would wipe out the first floor of most homes and that scared me. I cannot imagine why one would not want to evacuate. My DB was in the Navy and stationed in MS for one nasty hurricane. He tells about how they went to apartments and told people to evacuate but they insisted on staying to have a "hurricane" party. The next day he was placing toe tags on their remains and I can tell you he was devastated.

For those in Milton's path, please get out while there is time. Possessions can be replaced but you cannot. It's a shame because there are those who will try to take advantage with price gouging.

Sunny today and pleasant. Had my annual ENT check-up with hearing test. Always tells me my hearing loss is in dog whistle range and I tell him I'm not a dog, so not too concerned. Tomorrow is eye doctor which is semi-annual and I'm not sure if tests are involved this time? Hoping not. Hospital switched to credit card only for garage and it is a nightmare. Seems, as I was rudely told by garage attendant, must see attendant on first floor in garage or at information desk within the hospital for validation for senior discount before getting their car. She grudging gave it to me but then where you insert credit card is so high I had to get out of my car to pay. Drivers behind me were not too happy. Right height if you drive an SUV but not a sedan. Not a fan of this change. Must use same garage tomorrow so now I know what to expect.

Ran to TJMaxx and found some pumpkin spice hand wash in pumpkin shaped containers with glitter on them and they were reduced. Picked up some for DD, DDIL and myself. It smells good. Found some Halloween themed hair barrettes for DGD, dog treats and toys for DD's dog, Darjeeling tea for her as well and some vanilla extract for my pantry. Plus gift bags for DGD's birthday gifts which I ordered from Walmart and will have by Saturday. Forgot store is now in no plastic bag zone so just repacked goods into cart and took to car. I have bags in my trunk, just need to remember to take them with me.

Want to get Fall flag out on porch and backyard poles. DD got me some mums but my favorite store for pumpkins went out of business so I may try Produce Junction to see if they have some. It's always crowded so I do hate going there even though I can save money.

Hope everyone has a good day.

I must be the only person in the world not to be a fan of pumpkin spice scents. LOL.

The mayor of Fort Myers was on tv this morning and emphasized how dire is the threat of Milton. From the traffic on the highways heading out of Florida, a great number of people are heeding the instructions to evacuate.

Thank goodness on those people heeding the Milton warnings. Carole, I don't care a lot for pumpkin scents so much but now a good Pumpkin Butter can almost make me swoon. Our local orchards here use to make it but they have stopped — I think not enough sales for them. I haven't found any that is nearly as good as theirs and frankly I thought I was buying enough to keep them in 'good' sales.

Illinoislady, the Amish make very good pumpkin butter. Are there any in your neck of the woods?

Carole - thank you for the update on Puffin. It’s sad to see how quickly this disease has robbed her of a vibrant life. Three years ago my SIL was diagnosed with glioblastoma which quickly stole her life. It was heartbreaking to watch my brother and his family deal with her illness as she faded away. A good reminder to enjoy every day we are given.

Petite - thinking of you and praying for your safety

Cindy - hoping that your property in Florida has little to no damage. Am happy that you are still safe in NY.

Betrayal - enjoy your pumpkin spice hand wash. The aroma is a sure sign of fall. We did buy mums for the yard but otherwise I haven’t done any decorating for Halloween or fall since we are leaving on vacation in just over two weeks.

Praying that all in Milton’s path remain safe.

A beautiful fall day here and we enjoyed a hike in a county park. We figure we should take advantage of the good weather before the darkness and gloom of winter descend on us. Exercising seems to be relieving some of the lingering chemo fatigue. My PCP had warned me that it would take ‘some’ time to get back to normal.

    Take care!

I learn something new most days. Pumpkin Butter, a new food. Is it butter combined with pumpkin pulp?

  • betrayal
    betrayal Member Posts: 3,307

No, it is more like a pureed pumpkin with white grape juice concentrate, oranges, lemons and spices as copied from the jar I have. You spread it on toast just like it was butter but it has the consistency of home cooked smooth apple sauce. It is really tasty as is their apple butter which is also good on top of cottage cheese. No fat.

We do have some Amish close enough to us. I'll have to find out if any of them are into selling their food wares. We have only purchased (some time back) dog houses of all things although my big outdoor shed is actually Amish as are my kitchen cabinets which I've always enjoyed so much.

I always cheated with my Pumpkin Butter and put a lt. layer of butter on my toast before the Pumpkin Butter.

I’m jumping in quick. This morning I text a group of gf from 50 years ago. One is in Sarasota, and I found out she had to evacuate. I immediately offered up my house, we’re in zone D; zone A & B are where evacuations took place. She gladly took me up on the offer and headed the hour or so south to our home. She has her grandkids & husband with her.

Then I called my neighbor who can open my house. She’s a blessing in my life. She put our water on, set the AC from 80 to 75, and opened up the house while welcoming my gf & her family to the house.

Stress beyond. My house needed all circuit breakers put on, they could open the back lanai hurricane shutter - because the place is all locked up & dark. Food, drink, towels, bedding etc… They are all safe and sound. I’m hoping they get a good nights sleep.

Carole, your friend may be fine if she’s in a zone other than A & B. Would it be best if she was with some other people - definitely. Immediate needs water, food, candles and a battery operated radio. I’m assuming the entire area will be without power for some time. I second Jackie thanking you for updating us on Puffin. May she find peace soon. Puffin is proof of how fast life can turn on a dime.

Betrayal, I’m glad your hearing test was good and hope no eye tests tomorrow.

Harley, always good to take advantage of good weather to get out.

It was 65 & sunny here but with all the texting and phone calls on the guests, I wasn’t outside much. I did water my mums, cut down some wayward rosebush branches - roses already bloomed and done, and grilled some sliders for dinner.

I told my gf at the FL house, we’ll both end up with ulcers from watching the weather channel!

I’ve got a post card event tomorrow evening. About 8 of us are addressing post cards I believe to Georgia, to get the vote out. But I’m sure I’ll be texting and taking with my FL guests. I’ll try to keep you posted on Zone D in Fort Myers.

Sunny but fairly cool here at 61 degrees outside. Inside is almost the same. If this keeps up we may have to have some warmth thru the furnace, but we do try to go w/o switching to heat for as long as we can.

Cindy, how wonderful you could 'loan' your home to a friend. I can feel her gratefulness for the fact she has not only an angel in her life, but one that is a friend too. How special and how wonderful that your neighbor is available for her assistance to oversee and prepare the house. Chuckling a tiny bit over the "ulcers" remark knowing there is such truth to it. I hope it turns out to not be as bad as feared, but then again, there is nothing good to say about having back-to-back hurricanes.

Betrayal, my Dh doesn't always use butter on all toast. In his defense, I think a childhood habit. His was a family with 8 kids and two adults and I think when something else was available (like peanut butter) the butter was skipped as a savings measure. Telling on him he has another habit I suspect from childhood and maybe has something to do with the butter issue — he insists that every part of the bread/toast or sandwich be fully covered with whatever dressing is used. If he thinks it may not be he will take his cereal spoon and re-distribute whatever is there to make sure. Holding all to silence here that I mentioned his odd quirk. It is amusing to me.

Another couple of bills out of the way for the month and now I can settle in the real everyday all the time things.

Sending hugs for all who need one and as always thinking of Petite and others and anyone dealing with any sort of struggle.

Jackie, when I worked at our county nursing home as a teen, we were told to make a sandwich like we’d want to eat it. And that included spreading whatever ALL over the bread, no empty spots. So now when I get a sub sandwich, at times I’ve said that to the kid spreading the tuna! LOL

I’ve gotten numerous notices that our area in FL is under a tornado watch. Prior to that my gf had her youngest grand out for a walk. She’s loving all the dogs she sees and gets to pet. They were at the playground until rain started back up. She’s hoping to get back out before they’re stuck inside - need to burn off some energy.

A neighbor & his wife did a golf cart ride around - they took 4 videos showing the water from the lakes running towards another outlet, then a clear vent, then it running off to another tributary. He said it’s a good sign all things are draining properly. I’ve never see the spots he showed, just oblivious of the drain system.

Glued to the weather channel again.

Cindy - you are a great friend and an angel. Your friend must be so relieved to have a place to stay. I’ve been watching The Weather Channel off / on all day. This is such a terrifying storm. I hope Petite stays safe.

  • illinoislady
    illinoislady Member Posts: 39,754

The storm is now ashore in the Tampa area so my tv will likely be on almost non-stop. I am so concerned, not just for a tiny handful of people I know and a couple I'm related to, but every person, whether evacuated or not. Still hoping with all my heart that it is less than expected while knowing anything is too much on the heels of Helene.

    Prayers.

Thank you all for your kind words. I am ok. All family members have damage to their homes. The ones that evacuated can not come back until it is safe to do so.

Cindy, I hope your Ft. Myers home is OK.

I will check back when I have more information. Power down here is mostly out.

So glad you're ok, Petite. Hope those with damaged homes have insurance. I'm dreading all the photos of destruction.

Today dh is picking up his new truck at the dealership. I hope he enjoys it. Now we will have a car payment and higher insurance, but he wanted a new truck with "bells and whistles."

We will be having lunch at my sister Michelle's house. I am bringing Popeye's fried chicken and she is making sides. The occasion is for us to see Nova, our great niece, and her new baby.

Family members living in FL are all ok.

I forgot to say that I hired the son and grandson of our summer yard mowers to do some heavy work in the yard yesterday. They trimmed azaleas and cut trees out of the big flowerbeds, accumulating a big truckload of trimmings. It's not the right time to cut back azaleas but the yard looks neater now. I didn't have them prune the knockout roses that are about 5 feet high. I'll get to them when it's cooler. There is also weeding to be done.

There is no physician like cheerful thought for dissipating the ills of the body; there is no comforter to compare with good will for dispersing the shadows of grief and sorrow. To live continually in thoughts of ill will, cynicism, suspicion, and envy, is to be confined in a self-made prison hole. But to think well of all, to be cheerful with all, to patiently learn to find the good in all—such unselfish thoughts are the very portals of happiness; and to dwell day by day in thoughts of peace toward every creature will bring abounding peace to their possessor.    -James Allen

Welcome, teka and I second your posting for puffin.

Just returned from Ortho appointment and I am officially discharged for right knee. Started Orthovisc injections in left knee to see if I can get some relief until surgery in April. I met a woman in the waiting room whose mother was there to get injections in her knees. Daughter had lots of questions about Orthovisc and my success with it. She had to translate my responses to her mother. Told her about my surgery and that my doctor was the one to go to for replacement.

Even today Ortho asked if I needed a refill of my pain meds and I weaned myself off the narcotics before I left for vacation. I did take what I had left over with me but only took 1 the entire trip on a night where I could not sleep due to knee discomfort. Scheduling follow-up injections was a nightmare but I do have 3 more dates but a gap of 3 weeks until the next one but the last 3 are consecutive weeks. Hoping I get relief.

Had bought a pink embroidered Paris baseball cap with an Eiffel tower embroidered patch on the brim for my PT. I dropped it off today and she was surprised and pleased.

Ran to card store for Halloween, Thanksgiving and birthday cards for family members and a wedding card for my niece. She is getting married the end of November at the Elmwood zoo. Her sisters will be matron of honor and maid of honor. Last niece to get married and she is the one who is a Pinterest planner for parties. She just threw her Halloween party last weekend and the theme was "Until Death Do Us Part". Haven't seen photos yet but know they will be great.

Stopped at Rite-Aid but the shelves were bare of what I needed so I will go to CVS later.

petite1, glad you are safe. cindyny, that was so nice of you to offer your house to a friend and I hope your house was unscathed.

Lovely fall day. Only in upper 50's but sunny with mild breeze. It is supposed to drop into the 30's tonight with a frost warning. I want to put out fall flowers on porch but not sure it will get done today. I dug them out so they are ready to go but I need to find the storage bags for the hanging baskets and think they are in the shed. So maybe tomorrow when I am finally done with appointments for this week.

Hope everyone has a good day and is safe.

It is sunny and 81 here although the house remains cool. It sounds this morning like Milton was not as bad as originally feared which is good, but still I know so much lies ahead as people are able to leave shelters and figure out what is in store for them as far as needs, rebuilding and all the parts of getting through a huge storm.

So glad you are okay along with your home Petite. Sorry to hear that your family can't say the same, but happy that they made it through. I'm with you Carole in the hopes that all have insurance coverage for whatever their losses might be.

Ah, a new truck. Thinking perhaps the other one carted your camper back and forth to Mn till you decided to have the camper stay year round in Mn, so hopefully this one will last as long as needed. I admit most people don't trade till the old one starts to need lots of repairs. Anyway, we are always paying for something it seems. Wonderful to get to see the new baby and her mother. Sounds enjoyable. Sounds like a huge amt. of work got done in your yard that will surely save you quite a bit. We are getting to an age where it is difficult to keep up totally without a little assistance. Especially if you don't have a really small yard. Wise to get a lot out of the way and get tidy a bit quicker.

I hope everyone with family if they are in Fla. or those with homes in Fla. are all safe.

The baby is cute and sweet. Adelyn is her name. I had never heard it before but apparently it has some popularity. I enjoyed the lunch visit with my sister and her dh, my dh, my niece, her daughter and the new baby, who slept most of the time. Nova, the new mom, is nervous as can be expected. She never did babysitting and has not handled a baby before all of a sudden she has one.

Our relationships are our sacred responsibilities, for they are the framework within which life is lived. They show us where we have more learning and loving to do. Our interactions with others call up the disabling beliefs and negative patterns of behavior we need to release—the cynicism, anger, resentment, and jealousy that block love’s flow. Our relationships are our mirrors; they reflect where we are in consciousness. And if we are willing to face the truth about ourselves, our relationships offer the lessons that lead to our greatest transformation.     -Susan L. Taylor

Thank you Carole. You have been a blessing keeping us posted on Puffin. She is a beautiful soul, and now at peace.

It is another beautiful sunny cool morning here. About 65 degrees. It will be cooler yet Sunday or so, which means no doubt at all Fall is becoming much more evident. My kids are not even using their window a/c-swamp cooler. They actually have the coolest room in the house already so just closing the door keeps it nice.

Still busy keeping up with the normal things and hoping today to have some good time for "my list" and seeing what I can pare way down. The older I get it seems the more minimal I want to go so I will have a lot less to take care of. Not complaining, but it has seemed to be that I have been picking up some slack from things Dh was doing on a regular basis and misses much more often. So, if I have a lot less around here, better for me.

Hope those in the storms are starting to get all the help and assistance needed. Hope you all have a good day.
