Preparing for a long-anticipated 5 day hiking trip to Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument because...why not, as it is smack dab in between being diagnosed (last Tuesday, 4/9/18) and my first meeting with my surgeon (a week from Tuesday, 4/24). Better than canceling and then sitting around stewing and worrying, right? (I can still stew and worry at Escalante, but with different scenery than at home.) We took a break from packing gear and shoes (and, just in case I decide to sit out a day of hiking, a good book...) and husband and I headed out for a couple of miles of walking in our neighborhood. It would have been a 40 minute walk but, with all the friends and neighbors out enjoying the weather, it took over an hour. One of the benefits of living in a neighborhood where we actually know - and like! - our neighbors. Or most of them. I'll call it my exercise for the day. Maybe some light weights, stretches, crunches tonight while we watch our usual Sunday TV lineup...it'll keep me from falling asleep. (I can fall asleep during ANY movie or show.)

Go hiking, Patsy. It will do you good.
Very sweet, Lilac. I had never seen that picture. On a side-note, Abraham Lincoln wore size 14 shoes... big feet!
I went to Reset Yoga this afternoon and should get on the treadmill tonight. I am tired, so we'll see.......

Patsy, I'm jealous... five days hiking in Escalante... sounds wonderful! If you have to worry and wait it might as well be while surrounded by magnificent scenery.

Well, it got up to 70 yesterday and now it’s sleeting and snowing here. Crazy weather! Tomorrow DH and I are going to see a good friend run the Boston Marathon. He has raised over $13,500 for Dana Farber Cancer Fund. The weather looks rainy and windy; I hope he does ok.
April 5th was my 7 year cancerversary. It turns out two of my friends were diagnosed this year on that same date. Hard to watch people you care about go through it but I am grateful I can support them.
My MIL is back in the hospital. Shortness of breath caused by blood clots and lung cancer. Seems like an uphill battle this time.
I did Zumba and Strength Training Together class yesterday and my muscles are getting more sore by the hour. I may have overdone it a bit.

Great stuff accomplished today by all the ladies here!! I cleaned out my garden beds, cleaned the house, did a few loads of laundry and cooked up Gordon Ramsay's crispy salmon with a lemon butter caper sauce. Sides were mashed celeriac, and curried cauliflower rice. Yum!
Tomorrow is arm & chest day...pray for me!!!
Dancing Elizabeth- I'll lend you my chainsaw lol! After tomorrow's workout I'll look like:

LB, just had to laugh at the all-pink outfit with a pussy hat. Supergirl-ie!
Chronic, glad to hear your pain is better controlled and you are now in the normal BMI range. That is a lot of metformin. I was just taking 325 mg and hated it. Lasted a whole month on that dose before giving it up. My microbiome just didn't like it.
My bmi is in the low normal range and I want to get to the limit of low normal. I think as we get older, we have to look at body fat percentage as well, particularly for BC. Our bmi's could be hiding the fact that we are slowly losing muscle and gaining fat. I can afford to lose 5-6 kg in fat, if I don't lose any muscle. Wish me luck.
Yesterday was Zumba day as well as kettlebells, weight machines, body weight exercises and stretching as I try to maybe even gain muscle while losing the fat.

Ginger, so sorry about your MIL...
and yes, hiking in Escalante sounds wonderful!
Love the car, Ruth.I did a lot of walking around the neighborhood this weekend, working on my endurance. Two long walks and housework were my exercise this weekend. Pool today.

Oh my, time has certainly flown by very quickly when you're busy and having fun. I've been MIA due to work projects and spring cleaning. I've also replenished my butterfly garden with lots of nectar plants for the newly emerged butterflies. Yay! Now, I have to catch up reading everyone's news.
Anyway, I wanted to welcome everyone who is new to this group. I also wanted to thank those of you that have posted tips on weight loss. That has been my main goal since joining this group, and I totally appreciate all the advise. I've only lost about 2 pounds since my initial 10 pound weight loss declaration a month ago. It's coming off slowly, but it appears to be staying off. I have more patience now. I didn't in the beginning, but now I can actually see that the exercise and diet change is working. I started out with the elliptical. I've been slacking, but I'm getting ready to start that back up again. Believe it or not, walking has helped me the most. I'm even better when I combine walking with elliptical activity. Anyway, it seems that the key is to keep yourself in that fat burning heart rate zone. My fitbit blaze has helped keep me on track with that. It's not waterproof like the fitbit flex, but it definitely has more bells and whistles.
I'll try not to stay away too long this time. You all keep me motivated. It has just been difficult at times keeping up with all of you (counting steps and reading all the posts). I still work 40 to 45 hours a week. That's my only obstacle at this point. Fortunately, we have a very large parking lot so that I can get in those needed steps. I grab as many coworkers as I can to walk with me.
Hope everyone is doing well. I can tell that you all are doing great by all the wonderful pictures. They are very inspiring, as well as all the articles. Thanks everyone!
Karen

My arm/back/chest day is annoying. It really irks me that I can only push out half the sets that I can with lower body training. My pec and armpit give me grief because of scaring and I poop out so much faster. Anyway....3 sets/10 reps: bench press/45 lbs. seated cable row 35 lbs, one arm dumbbell row 20 lbs, wide grip lat pull down 27.5 lbs, assisted chin up 60 lbs, preacher curls 15 lbs. lunges 50 lbs (for leg pain relief) & planks My arms feel like two searing pistons. arrrgg, lol. Cardio bike, arc trainer, treadmill....60 mins total.
Best part of the workout: I was on the treadmill when a lady jumped on the machine beside me. I glanced over and couldn't help but notice the capped head and chemo tinge in the colour of her face. I was so taken aback that my glance must have been too long. The lady smiled, blushed and stammered "this is so embarrassing, I'm so out of shape, and feel so gross from chemo, but I need to keep moving". This brought tears to my eyes. I slammed the stop button on my machine, turned to her and told her that I was her 4 years ago, and the only exercise I did was to lift a fork to my mouth. I said that I only wished I had the physical and emotional strength to do what she was doing all on her own. Then I told her to hold that capped head up high as she was the strongest person in the gym, bar none. She stopped her machine, stepped over to mine and gave me the biggest hug. Yeah, soppy, we both had wet eyes. We resumed our treadmills and chatted for the next half hour. She wants to strength train, amazing! We are going to be meeting up on Wednesday and I'm going to help her with a very gentle start, taking all her limitations into account. I'm pretty sure that over time this lady is going to be able to kick my butt in the gym!
I also gave her all the info on BCO and she said she will be joining. She is especially interested in this thread. I told her that she will be amazed at the support she'll find. I just know that the fine & fit folks here will welcome this shy, strong and beautiful soul with open arms!

Well I ran both Saturday and Sunday this weekend but after watching the awesome Desi Linden win the womens Boston Marathon this morning, I now will be running after work! Simply love that race and love watching it each year, but this year....first American woman to win in 33 yrs and she stops at the porta potty to wait for fellow American Shalane Flanigan...UNBELIEVABLE! Had tears in my eyes as she crossed the finish line! So inspiring! I have some tired legs but will shake out 3 or so!
Egads..love that story! 💗😘
Happy Monday!!

Egads, I was crying reading your story. That is one thing good that we can MAKE happen from having had BC. As appreciative as one is for the support of friends and family, there is nothing more truly helpful and encouraging than to have someone who has 'been there, done that' in your corner. I hope she will join us!
I will have to check out the Boston Marathon news.
I subbed this morning for a friend whose daughter was in the hospital having TWINS! She had a c-section bright and early (two healthy baby girls) so he came back to school at noon (even though I offered to stay so he could go home and take a nap!!!). I plan to go to Zumba and Yoga tonight.

Ruth you know it was Uncle Bill who first got me hooked on the Boston Marathon! 😊💗

Egads what a wonderful story it brought a tear to my eye. The one thing about the gym is that you never know what people are struggling with, so glad you reached out.
Welcome Patsy, that hike in Escalante will feed your soul and that is so important.
LB I love the M&S picture. Launch week here started 4/14, I did go to Body Flow last week but they were still doing the older release and as I have my friend here from the UK it will be 2 weeks before I can get to a class to do the new release, the sun may be hiding everywhere else but here it has been constant so no coastal fog at all, honestly it's more like summer than spring and I know people in the east are sick of winter but I sure would like a little taste of it.
Ruth love the new car.
DancingElizabeth I am a Grit Strength girl - Plyo is soooooo hard so huge props to you for doing it.
Sweet so wonderful to see you, congratulations on your major milestore.
Patoo great that you're mixing it up between the pool and the pickelball court.
I know a girl running Boston today, her Mom passed from BC and she runs every race in her honor, she is running in a tank top with arm warmers but from the pictures I've seen the weather is helacious, I've checked her bib number and she hasn't finished yet it will be interesting to read her post once she finishes.
I did the new Body Combat on saturday and the new Body Pump yesterday but I'm still coughing as I can't seen to shake the last of this awful cold but my quads are screaming today so obviously I did something to those muscles!!!

Egads, thanks for sharing that story. ❤️
Everyone is looking good and sounding great in your workouts.
My yoga teacher now has a photographer at her Saturday class. I made the page; modifications and all. Left MX and recon side still can't raise my arm like everyone else in class, but heck, I'm still going!!

- the year I ran the Twin Cities marathon we had heavy rain for my first 18 miles of the race...the temp never went higher than the mid 40s so it was cold and pouring rain. So wet and miserable...this year's Boston looked very similar. May have been colder? Of course the sun came out about 2 miles from the finish and the rain stopped!!!

Yea Falconer, looking good!
Runner, I am not at all suprised that Bill was the one who got you interested in the Boston Marathon. I remember everyone talking about it in the lounge when he ran it.
Cheryl, hope you can kick the rest of the crud.
Since I had some extra time, and it's nice out, I took the puppies for a walk.

badger, I was thinking of you when I phoned DS yesterday. He said their dorm floor ordered a massive amount of pizza and they weren't going out in the snow. They did go out to help people stuck in the snow!
I did shbam again. Don't like the instructor too much, but whstevs. Tried a crx strap class and I got 5 minutes into it and I had to leave. It's just too advanced for what I can do. That's a little disheartening, but oh well. I twisted my knee, so iced and wrapped it. Maybe I'll try the pool tomorrow.

Egads - I love the photo of the statue!!! LOL!!! Your posts make me laugh!!! And, I was VERY moved by your story....we are indeed a sisterhood. I look forward to *meeting* your new friend on here. That is truly awesome and so beautiful... I too wished that I had worked out during treatment - instead of retreating to my bedroom and hiding from the world.
Falconer - You look Great!!!!
HBCheryl - Thanks for the props!!! Same to you!!! I have to admit - the first time I tried Pylo - I thought I would either break an ankle - jumping off, on and over the bench or need CPR!!! LOL!!!! Just about the HARDEST 30 minutes you can have. But, my arms are beginning to show signs of sculpting!! I'm actually much happier with my body - now - than BEFORE I was dx'd with BC. (unless I'm completely topless - LOL - not a fan of my Franken-Boob look!!)
2FUN - sorry you had a bad experience in that class...kudos for trying it - though!!! I hope your knee heals soon!!!
HELLOs to Everyone Else!!!!
Tonight - it was a 1/2 hour "Insanity" Class. The instructor was great!!! Really pushed us and it felt very good. Then, did the stationary bike for 45 min.
On a sad note - I (finally) got around to buying a sympathy card and writing a letter to the family of a co-worker who died last month. She was the kindest - sweetest lady. About my age. And, had one DD - just a couple years older than my DD. Only child - too - just like my DD.
She went into the hospital - a few months ago - with severe back pain. It turned out to be Stage IV cancer. She went downhill fast (I don't believe she even knew she had cancer)...and pasted away within weeks...
I am crushed for her family and especially her daughter. I still expect to see her and can't accept that she is gone...I wish there was more I could do for her family...and I wish - I could see her again - one more time...

Egads, nice story! So touching. Falconer, great photo and keep at it, it is worth the pain.
Cheryl, I hope you're rid of that cough soon.
DancingE, I am sorry for your loss. That is a quick turn of events and hard to understand, I'm sure. My dd is also an only child and was only 7 when I was diagnosed Stage IV. Now she's 18. I think we just have to make the best of those lemons we're handed. Sending hugs.
Salsa tonight, maybe some running this afternoon.

Heidihill - Thanks for the kind words and hugs!!! I always enjoy seeing you on here...you give me hope - that if I became stage IV - that I could continue to be very active!!! And, hope that people can do very well for many years or perhaps stay NED forever...

So I got the Piyo set. I started crying because I could not do any of the upper body stuff. My body froze. I have zero strength. I think I'm going to get free weights or resistance bands to get myself back. "Get myself back" what does that even mean anymore. Still lost ... I hate my "new normal" I want to be me again.

Amie,
We all know how you feel! It's frustrating to try to bounce back from what was good health before all this tx began! But it is great that you are stepping up to the weights and keeping at it. That's the best medicine you can give yourself. Really.
I'm in the final countdown to the "big" race this Sunday- running the Earth Day 5k- I'm about as fast as Earth making its way around the sun, so I thought I might dress up as dear Mother Earth just to make things a little more fun-ny. Today I ran my 5k on the treadmill.0 -
Amie, dont get down on yourself. I can TOTALLY relate. I still cannot do any of the classes that I used to do, but I am stronger than I was. It just takes a long time being persistent.
Are there instructions for how to modify the exercises for what you can do. I found that I can hold a plank now for 10 seconds, and 8 months ago I couldn't hold a plank at all.
I found that I can still do some of the "silver sneakers" classes at the Y, and I can do the aquatic exercise classes. Let us know how we can help you modify the exercises. Just do what you can, you'll get there. I am doing resistance bands and 3-5 pound weights, so keep at it, WE will get there!!!!!(((HUGS)))))

I didn't get any exercise in today. I cannot bend my knee, and I have tons of steps to do at work, so I took Motrin and I will say a prayer it resolves. I was getting into the Zumba, but I guess I need to back off. I find it funny that all thru my cancer treatment none of my usual joint pains were evident. Now that I am moving on, my old joint problems are resurrected! LOLOLOL

Amie, it is very, very frustrating and it will be a slower process than you want BUT, if you keep at it; you will be you again, maybe even a better version (believe it or not....I would not have believed it when I was going through treatment or for a good while after it either, but it can be true .)
I had a very 'exercisy' day (although I bet I still didn't get as many steps as Vargadoll ). I went to Zumba this morning, picked up the grandpuppies and took them to a park where we walked for an hour with a friend and her dog, started cleaning the house (I host my Book Club Thursday night and have to scrape off the top layer of dust), went to POUND (which I love and is so hard!), and cleaned some more. Whew!

high winds this afternoon. the winds toppled my neighbors tree from the roots. Thankfully it didn’t fall on my house

Wow, how scary!!
0 -
yikes, Karen! So glad it missed your house... Reminds me of the time, about ten years ago, I was inside my home, looking out into the back yard during a big storm...and said to hubby, 'I don't remember that tree leaning so much'. Sure enough, ten or twenty seconds later I watched it fall over, almost seemed to be in slow motion. Thankfully, it missed our house and the neighbors, though it did manage to take out a chunk of my fence!
Today was my last physical therapy apt for replaced knees....yay! My range of motion is good, and I am strong..and of course since it was my last day they worked me hard, for about an hour and a half, followed by icing. Lots of leg strengthening exercises with ankle weights. Spent the rest of the day at home, catching up on correspondence and such. Without PT three or four times a week I will have to be self motivated to keep up the exercises. This thread will help! (and I have ankle weights, so no excuse not to keep working on strengthening as well as stamina!)

Egad: What a wonderful story! Can't wait for your new friend to also be our new friend.
Falconer: Love your picture!!! Good luck on Sunday!
2FUN: Sorry about your knee!
Karen: Yikes! Glad it wasn't at your house but sorry about your neighbor. We had a tornado touch down in a city near me this weekend. So much damage to schools, homes, businesses.
Amie:
Cheryl: My cough this winter lasted a month. My SIL is still coughing. May you get the rest you need to overcome your cough soon.
Walked/ran this afternoon. I've been painting rocks. Pictures to follow soon.
