Only 1 walk yesterday due to rain and hurricane force winds. I did make many face masks for family members and some of my health care peeps, that need to go grocery shopping. Not enough of the PPE for them to use them out. Hopefully weather will be better today

Yeah, things are crazy here too. But hospitals not yet overrun. Excess patients distributed across cantons. And patients being taken in from the Alsace as assistance to overburdened French hospitals. Fatality is still below 3%, compared to double digits in Italy or Spain. Median age of fatalities is 83, most with comorbidities.
DH is working from home. DD and her boyfriend have been holed up in the mountains studying online. She just sent news that she passed a test. Will see them tomorrow when they come to take the dog for a day or two. In the meantime I am keeping somewhat fit by giving Zumba classes online to my friends, mostly 60+. I shouldn't call it zumba even as it's just exercises with music. No fancy choreography. My Fitbit tells me I am losing aerobic fitness from staying indoors too much. I did breakout today for a short hike in the forest. For my sanity.

I dragged out a Martial Arts DVD that a friend gave me in 2011. Obviously not my thing since this is the second time I've done it in 9 years, but something different! My project for the day was to clean out the furnace room. I discovered, not one but, two hand vacuums. I charged them up and both work, so I will have something to use when I give my car a thorough cleaning. It is horribly dirty because it has become The Dog Car!

I am wondering what other long-hidden treasures are awaiting discovery?!?! I got out for five glorious miles of walking a new trail because I was unable to hike where planned. No matter. I got in 5 miles and was able to talk at length to a mare as this is also a bridleway plus wonderful views of the snow-covered mountains.
Home making pot roast. Drinking some of the wine I got last Saturday. Just superb now.
I could do with more reflection time and less work at the moment. I think I will do a solo Easter ride in the tulip fields. Super safe, and a girl has to live. I don't want to emerge unscathed from COVID-19 but die of heart problems.
Reconnecting with my wine bar friends via FB. It will be some party when this is all over. At least, I think I can count on Labor Day at the Vineyard. As for the activities….don't ask other than my tent will be downhill so I can literally roll into it. But it will be fun! - Claire

Hey Heidihill, have fun with brilliant DD and do tell her that on Friday, final-year medical students across the UK have graduated early to join the frontline of the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. Love it that you jumped in with online fitness to music - hey - next stop, official Zumba teacher training. Oh, btw, in Belgium, a country that has been badly hit with the virus, there are signs of improvement. For the first time, people leaving hospital have outnumbered the new admissions in the last 24 hours. There is no question that social distancing is working across the world. Ruth, cracked me up to read that diet. Claire, don't you have a number of older folks in your building - how are they doing?
My husband has set up a Zoom room that we meet his family in each Sunday at 5p PM (BST). darling husband's sis, brother, their respective adult kids, including the 3 of us here in diffierent rooms. We chat for little more than 40 minutes, talking about our jobs/lack of, homeschooling of the younger kids, how bored we are and any coronavirus jokes we may have. I've just listened to DH - downstairs, yelling at his mother for the past twenty minutes, trying to get her into the Zoom room via phone. No silver lining found over here - yet, LOL.

Our shutdown local movie theater was selling $5 bags of movie popcorn this weekend (you drive up & they run it out to the car), so last night we got a bag and then had a Virtual Happy Hour via Facebook Messenger with 3 friends. It was fun! Today I will do Zoom Barre & Yoga & do something for aerobics, not sure what yet. Right now I'm waiting for a call back from a friend who's in the hospital-not with Coronavirus-it's easy to forget that there are other things going on it the world right now too.

The local Cancer Support Community, where pre-coronavirus I did a number of classes now has Ycat Chair Yoga, Mat Pilates +Relaxation and Art of Living Meditation via Zoom. The meditation one is scheduled twice a week through the end of May, so I believe things may be shut down here longer than end of April.
Lilac - My TaiChi instructor is also Paul Lam trained & conducts workshops throughout the states. His name is Ralph Dehner. including the class I found, I am also doing the routine he has taught us on my own.

All seems to be fine here, other than some people living in abject terror. I went to the rubbish chute at the end of the corridor a week or so ago and encountered a neighbor when coming back to my place. When I gave her a wave she retreated in terror. I think that most of us here are faring better than the two ladies that I am working with who live in the NY metro area. They are fine physically, but again terrified and I think suffering from isolation. I am so grateful not to be in downtown Seattle at this point. I can easily distance and get outside.
Many more people outside walking than normal. However, that does not include most of the people who live here. One interesting observation is that there is now a sign posted that if you refer someone who ultimately rents, they will give you a $1,000 reward. That says something about difficulties renting. I think that going forward we may see more elderly people living with their families.
The two ladies who work part time at the supermarket next door are continuing to work there. The supermarket is being very careful to keep things wiped down. Otherwise, things are normal, including stocks of TP. No dried beans though.
I can still ride in all the normal places, as well as do the hiking trails near where I live. The place I intended to hike yesterday was closed, but a trail nearby was open and I had never done it before. It's also open to horses so was fun to see people out walking and horseback riding.
I am missing my wine bar friends but we have all connected on Facebook. They are doing a brilliant food and wine parings series. However, I need to go back to no wine, as these ten days are starting to show.
I also can see that social distancing is working with the majority of states predicted to peak within the next two weeks. I think this is based on mandatory stay-at-home plus 2 weeks. In Kirkland, which was the first place the virus hit, everything has greatly slowed down and Evergreen Hospital is just fine with resources now.
Easter Sunday is next week, a time of rebirth and renewal. Ten years ago, I was just finishing up chemo and felt I had been reborn at the cellular level. I am convinced that the same may happen to our collective psyche this time.
Even if that doesn't quite happen, it will be some party. I can't wait!!! - Claire

Hi, everyone. I hope your social distancing is going well. I have been working from home for three weeks now. It has given me a good opportunity to get back into exercise mode, especially since the weather is starting to improve. I go out at lunch and walk nearly every day and I got used to taking quick breaks and doing a round of dumbbell exercises or squats or planks. There are tons of people out walking now, which makes it slightly hard to social distance. Around the neighborhood, I just move to the other side of the street, or turn left instead of right. On the trails though it can be harder to stay six feet away. They are approximately six feet apart, and some people walking together do not get over to the edge. Friday after work the lake where I usually walk was packed. Today I tried another trail but it was also busy but I did get a 50 minute walk done. So I'm working on time and place strategies for walking at the forest preserves, just like going to the grocery store. Other than that I am pretty much staying home. DH is essential and has to work, but he is in contact with few people and has masks and gloves. He has decided he will do the grocery shopping and won't let me go out now.
Karen, I love the dog and I hope all goes well. I caught up on back posts and saw your hubby's bypass surgery news. I am glad he got taken care of. It is a scary time to need medical care or the ER right now. My son also got sent home from the ER for something they would normally have admitted him for, and had a surgery that they tried to delay, but luckily he did get it done. I'm glad to be over that hump. Now we just have to stay safe in the pandemic. Someone at the company I am working at has died from coronavirus, so that is starting to hit very close to home. Stay safe everyone.

I think I shared this already, but my marathon in June was canceled. While it's the right decision, I'm crushed. This was more than a marathon to me, it was also part of my screw you cancer.
I'm still running, still training--there's an option to do a virtual race and since Grandma's mailed out the marathon jackets in January and since I don't wear race gear if I haven't run the race, I think I'll do the virtual race. It will be boring as all get out with no other participants and right here in my area, but on the other hand I can definitely plan my route so any bathroom breaks can be done in my own home.
Saturday I ran a half marathon distance, yesterday four miles of recovery and today's a rest day.

Touching piece from Howard Lee, LB. But Western countries aren't doing nearly enough to stop this pandemic. It's absolutely criminal! Wish he would do a flip book on those criminals. It is very unlikely the way we are going now that herd immunity will reach levels that won't breakdown healthcare systems within the next year. Everyone should be wearing masks for many months, DIY ones are better than nothing! Flattening the curve is not enough. R0 (R-nought or basic reproduction rate) should be brought down to 1/2 (same as SARS, or 2 people infecting 1 person only) as opposed to current rates of 1 person infecting 2 or 3. I returned to Switzerland without being screened at the airport. This would be unthinkable in Taiwan, for example. Thousands of Swiss are being repatriated without one single question at the point of entry. In Taiwan, I would be tested, I would have to fill out a questionnaire, there would be follow up, I would be quarantined, and and and. I would not be free to infect other people as someone asymptomatic (you can spread it two or more days before symptoms appear). Ok maybe the Swiss authorities think they can deal with the consequences, they have been running budget surpluses for years, they have a stockpile of gold reserves, they can call up trained military and civil protection personnel, but we already know they have sacrificed the lives of the weakest (mostly older) folks for the sake of individual freedoms. That is not heroic to me.
Sorry I just needed to rant. DH had to work today although he said there were only three people in a big room at a government building. No, he didn't wear a mask.
Walked the dog today, wearing a mask and swerving from people who don't know what social distancing means. To be honest, I also don't believe 2 meters is enough under all conditions. For example, a runner or hiker breathing hard would form more respiratory droplets which could be propelled further by their lungs, body speed and wind conditions. Stay as far away as possible from anyone is a good rule for me.

It's a scary world right now, that is for sure.
We took the puppies out to a lake with zero other people around. They had a fun and very muddy time! We wanted to go through the car wash but there were too many people around the gas station so we will just drive a muddy car for awhile. I did Zumba & Pound on Zoom.

Brio, our new fur baby joined our family yesterday. He is about 1.5 yo neutered male red Dobie. He is so smart and a sweetheart.
First day back at work in 4 weeks. Off the week of March 9th for Craig, then the 3 week (actually 2 extra weeks) extended spring break. Several zoom/google meets meetings today. Big learning curve, but I think I'll get it by the time the year is over!
I need to go to King Soopers (Kroger Company) tomorrow after work. I tried to place an order yesterday, for pick up but it would not have been ready in time before Passover starts on Wednesday evening. I just heard on the news that starting tomorrow they are going to limit the number of people in the store and may have 1 way aisles. Sure wish I had ordered to get in Wednesday
One of my BC friends who I met here on BCO just went into palliative care at one of her daughter's home. She has been ill since earlier this year. It breaks my heart. This will be my second friend this year from bco who I will have lost. They both live down under - once in NZ and the other Australia but I met them real time in Denver. Such a loss.
Well, I best get in bed. I woke up at 4am this morning but didn't get up till 5:15 - dozed on and off for the hour plus.
Sweet dreams. Stay safe and stay healthy.

HeidiHill, I thought I was buying two masks from Onzie (activewear) and when at the check out the total came to $65 I bailed. The UK has no face masks available nor are they worn. I've seen some wear painters masks but no medical face masks are available. I'm sure you have all read the PM is in intensive care. I don't know where we are in the bell curve of transmission, yet we still have folks who are out strolling, meeting friends in public and private - people who think this is a London thing, yet, from sitting here in my home and been out twice to food shop, I think the majority of the UK population are woke to what need's to be done. I agree with you - stay away as much as possible from anyone outside your home. CeliaC, I went Ralph Dehner's website and he is a remarkable master trainer. How lucky you are! His clip up of sword - perfection! TwoHobbies, hope your son is mending quickly without any complications and sorry to read of the death of your company worker.
I'm (almost daily) doing HIIT with son in our livingroom and Monday-Friday hour of real-time zoom yoga. Anyone else have to stop and actually remember what day it is? From Tricycle daily meditations that come to your email:
Equanimity is not insensitivity, indifference, or apathy. It is simply nonpreferential. Under its influence, one does not push aside the things one dislikes or grasp at the things one prefers. The mind rests in an attitude of balance and acceptance of things as they are.

Looks like you have an amazing new exercise partner, Karen! I also read the Kroger announcement, which looks more like hype than reality, or at least for the supermarket next door which is seldom that crowded. Possibly Thanksgiving. Yes, they have TP these days.
Got in a 5 mile run in the sunshine yesterday. Excited that my tea came which should last for several months.
I haven't been on eBay for a bit, but think it could be time for a new pair of trail running shoes. Mine are looking sad, I wonder why?
Trilliums are out, so spring continues to unfold. Bicycle again this weekend. I think the cycling trails are still open, but if not, the roads are. Lots of amazing back roads to cycle.
One thing I can say is that this is a time to smile and wave at people. I am just finishing up a research study on the emotional impact of COVID-19. Other than the obvious ones of health and safety, people are yearning for human contact. A smile and a wave from a safe distance can go a long way in making everyone feel better. - Claire

Lilac, my DH says this situation reminds him of the old movie Groundhogs Day, where every morning Bill Murray woke up and it was the same day over and over and over again.
It's another nice day here so we will do a long dog walk. PiYo on Zoom tonight.

Six mile run this morning. I've been working from home since March 16--this is the fourth week. The days blur and the work doesn't end.
I've been making fabric masks and every single friend or family member I've asked if they want one has said yes. I think the count is up to 40+ now. That's way more masks than I thought I'd ever make.

Good job, edj!
A couple years ago we did a big house project that involved a lot of staining and sanding. Today when we started cleaning out the garage, I found an unopened bag of latex gloves and one of facemasks left over from that project. Whoo hoo, I don't have to wear a sock over my face when I go out foraging for supplies!

Win Ruth! edj3, you are a woman of many talents and will smash that marathon when it happens. I actually say, when I use my twice weekly trip out to buy needed essentials by standing in line 2 meters apart for 40+ minutes o get into the supermarket - "Good morning/afternoon, hope you are safe and well". A bantering usually starts and the inevitable question - you aren't from around here, where are you..my flat California nasal accent is a dead give away.
The weather is stunning, sunny, trees in blooming and very quiet here in the hinterlands. I woke this morning and had to ask myself is it Wednesday or Thursday and if I put the bins out for rubbish, that happens on Thursday. Another cup of joe for me.

Kudos edj2!
Wish I had a sewing machine. Maybe time to shop around for one. Even a small portable one-handed machine could work. I saw them selling the material kit on amazon.co.uk for face masks and the picture showed one of these small machines. In the meantime I decided to buy some fine particle filter masks for bikers but it will take a month to deliver from amazon Germany. Postage and handling were 8 times the cost of 20 disposable masks. As a regular city biker I should be protecting my lungs more and should splurge.
Waving and smiling to Claire and all!

Yes, the days blend into each other...waking up so often to the "what day is it"...when it first started happening it reminded me of my long lost college days of partying too much ;-)
I still teach live classes on Tues/Thurs but otherwise my DH and I sit at our work stations and work 7 days a week. Haven't been good about streaming live classes from my gym. but when the pollen allows we get one or two walks in a day...yesterday 2 30 minute walks...beautiful time of the year if the pollen allows.
Happy Easter/Passover to all celebrating. TT

Four miles today (recovery run) plus a 35 minute yoga class. I will never be flexible and I will never stop trying to be flexible!

The WWWers are still walking separately. Some of us had coffee on Zoom after working out today. I will be back on Zoom to do Pound and Zumba tonight.

Hi all:
I know I've been MIA for a while, so much going on, some fun, some not fun at all...but bottom line: after being in Chile, being quarantined when I returned after being evacuated (a whole story in and of itself but suffice to say that getting exercise wasn't easy) and coming back to a closed office but still slammed at work, working remotely....I am back at it and exercising! We live in a rural area so walks around the neighborhood while still maintaining physical distance are easy. Heading out for a walk shortly!
Stay well;
Octogirl

We will probably walk the dogs this afternoon, even though it's cold (think snow flurries) and very windy. Our parks look like crime scenes, all the picnic shelters, play ground equipment etc. have been blocked off with the yellow caution tape, the restrooms, skateboard parks, and horseshoe pits are all padlocked. In the next couple days I will need to go out a forage for food again.......sad world!
I will Dance2Fit and do Yoga on Zoom again tonight.

Ran 9 miles this morning, my coach had me do 8 sets of speed drills. Whew. But the running helps with anxiety, that's for sure.

DH and I took a 1.5 hr walk today. Storms yesterday evening resulted in a much cooler day than the 80 degrees of yesterday. Ulterior motive was a stop at a very small beverage store to replenish my supply of Ryan's Irish Cream Liqueur (Bailey's knock-off) to spike my AM coffee. Covered my nose & mouth mouth like a bandit, using one of my large dinner napkins (serviettes for UK folks) as a mask.
