Still doing all my Zoom exercising, including planks.
I have been putting off the Shingrix vaccine. Worried about getting it during this COVID times and possibly mistaking Shingrix after effects with COVID early symptoms. Not sure I will be able to convince husband to get Shingrix.

Get the shot. You do NOT want to get shingles and Covid at the same time!!!!!!!!

I'm with ruthbru. I had a couple of very stoic friends who got shingles and their experiences were why I did not hesitate for an instant to get those two shots.

Thought this article about the timing of exercise was interesting. I'm walking 6 miles a day - usually in the morning but not always.
Physical activity of any intensity, whether folding laundry or jogging, can lower the risk of an early death for middle-aged and older people, a new study suggests. Furthermore, the time of day you move your body could affect risk further.
Researchers analyzed data from 2,795 participants. They identified a group of 781 women with breast
cancer and 865 female controls, and a group of 504 men with prostate cancer and 645 male controls. Both groups responded to a questionnaire relating to their physical activities and gave data on the timing and frequency of their exercises.
The study found that exercising in the morning, between 8-10 a.m., showed the highest benefit in reducing the risk of both breast and prostate cancers. Researchers also found that men who exercised between the hours of 7 and 10 p.m. had a 25 percent lower risk of developing prostate cancer. No benefits from evening activity were seen in the group of women.
"Overall our findings indicate that time of the day of physical activity is an important aspect of physical activity that may potentiate the protective effect of physical activity on cancer risk," the researchers wrote. "The effect of timing of physical activity on cancer risk should be examined in future research with a more detailed assessment of activity patterns, also including occupational activity."

Celia - get the Shingrix vaccine. My husband got it last month and had the "flu" like side effects but it lasted only 1 day - with both the first and second shot. I think because the reaction is short lived its easy to not mistake it for Covid. And as the others have said you DON'T want to get shingles. My DH had it 36 years or so ago and it was miserable - it was 36 months after his father passed away and DH was young then. It was before there was any treatment and it was awful.
I made latkes tonight. I make them once/year. I cut the recipe by 2/3 so just the right amount for the 2 of us. We ate 4 tonight and there are 4 leftover that I will eat during the week. Tonight is the 5th night.
This is my last week before winter break and I'm more than ready for it. Lots of paperwork to do by the end of the week - progress reports for 14 kiddos and the regular paperwork. Usually, I travel during winter break - since 2016, to Israel to see younger daughter. Before that to Toronto to see DD#1 and SIL and when my parents were in S. FL to visit them. This year, staying at home - we might go to the mountains for a few days either next week or the following but haven't made a decision yet. I'm okay with not traveling as I wouldn't get on a plane right now, but I do miss being able to see my kids. I think DD#2 is starting to feel home sick. She is talking about coming for Passover the end of March, but that depends on what's going on with Covid. She hasn't been here since 09/11 of 2019. We usually go see her in the summer and winter vacation.
With the vaccine starting, I sure hope people don't get stupid and decide they don't need to follow any of the safety protocols. The local NBC news station, resident doctor said she thinks we'll be wearing masks for another year. Seeing the increases in Europe scares me. So far numbers are not going up here, but there still is time for that . My school district has a plan put in place if things stay the same to bring kiddos back starting January 11 with elementary and starting the week of 01/18 through 01/31 middle and high school. I'm going to be covering middle school for a maternity leave starting mid January. I'm trying to stay positive but I do worry about being in a building if cases are not below 5% positivity.
Going to go bundle up for our nightly walk.
Stay safe and stay healthy.

Did day 14 plank last night--Mondays are my non-workout days so honestly I forgot until right before bed. I won't make that mistake again, planks are no fun after a day of eating and drinking. Today was HIIT, abs and weights for upper body.

Celia -- I timed the Shingrix to my teaching break so I wouldn't have to go through a daily health check protocol in case I did feel sick for a day or two...but agree with others to move forward if you can. We had been on a wait list for over a year when it became available to us a couple of months ago. Didn't feel I could risk voluntarily getting sick during the semester, but during break - yes.
We continue to pay for the very mild weekend with unseasonably cold weather Mon/Tuesday...but at least the snow is north of us. Rest day today for plank, but did plank and yin yoga yesterday.

Just catching up. I also had a physical yesterday, and all was good except that my cholesterol is slightly elevated. I am not sure whether to blame the latkes (actually the sour cream that goes with them...) or the homemade eggnog... (definitely a mixed holiday household here). My doc just shrugged and said to exercise more and eat less bad stuff. Ok, more walking for me! I need to get back into swimming but not in the cards here and now. and it is cold here, not North Dakota cold, but it is snowing lightly and won't get above freezing today.
I get up early but am not into walking or other exercise before noon or so. Ok, I may need to work on that.....
Hope you all have an active, healthy week!

I'm off to the treadmill in the basement for some cardio & then to Barre Sculpt for some toning.

MinusTwo thank you for posting the article and link. I went and read the link - so interesting and through in analysis. Interesting reading of many of you having had a Shingrix vaccinebecause over here it is available on the NHS to people in their 70s. Good to read of all the activity, walking, classes on zoom and of course planking! I had a heck of a time teaching on zoom today. My screen kept freezing and mic batteries gave up and I had no idea. Oh well.

My niece (who's named after me) is working on mastering a handstand, she posted a photo of herself kicked up but still on the wall. And I posted hmm wonder if I can still do one. And now apparently I'm to give it a go tomorrow morning. Guess we'll see if it's like riding a bike, I took gymnastics for a couple of years as a kid and have always had good balance. But it's been decades since I've tried. Hope I don't break anything.

Over here Shingrix is recommended over age 50 now.
I had to take a complete rest day yesterday as my heart rate stayed up all day (still recovering from last week's infusion I guess) but tonight I rowed 6,026 meters in about 30 minutes! Starting to gain back some of the muscle I lost to TCHP....
Ruth: Going to get to -3 tonight, and wind is already picking up as well. The good news is our snow forecast is more favorable -- fingers crossed. Not into the feet measurements, but at least looking more like a white Christmas and possibly enough to play in! Too bad my balance is so messed up from the neuropathy, but I can at least make snow angels

Well nothing broke but I have some work to do:
Got my plank done this morning, then abs, then tried the hand stand, then legs. Whew.
0 -
Wow, way to go edj! The last time I did a hand stand - a yoga pose on hands - I broke a tiny bone deep in my L wrist...I haven't dared again. Good for you!

Took Nugget for a walk this morning. We were both bundled up against the cold. With the snow storm coming later today into tomorrow, it’s gonna be playtime in the house.

Yikes. edj! Very impressed, but not going to try it myself!
Walked with my neighbor friend this morning, will sign out of here & do my plank, Pound tonight.

Whoa- edj! That’s awesome!!
Celia- I have had Shingles 3 times in 2020. It’s miserable! I highly recommend getting the shot. I have to wait 6 months from my last time having it and I am counting the days.

edj - wow!!! I'm impressed. The last time I did a handstand I was in grade school! Certainly not about to try at my age- LO!! And with the continued tendonitis in my elbow, I'm not doing planks. When I hold anything in left hand or bend it or hold anything and rotate arm inwards it hurts!!! I think I'm going to ask the PCP for a referral to orthopedtic. Brace and Voleran cream is not helping. I haven' t been icing though, but I get cold so easily this year both my trunk (is it my foobs) and I have Reynauds in my hands.
Last day and then I'm on winter break. Next week, I'm going to putter in the house - try to pick up where I left off this summer going through stuff in the house. Then the second week we are going to the mountains for a couple days to get away - do some hiking (all bundled up).
Have a great day!

karen1956, you might consider CBD cream. Pretty sure full spectrum is legal for you in CO. I use the isolate as full spectrum isn't legal in KS, and it helps but I think full spectrum would be even better.
Today I started with one of my hard ab workouts that ends with planks, b/c I knew it would be long enough. Yeah next time, I'll START with the timed plank! But I got it done and then did HIIT.

I've been walking in the afternoons. I'm an early riser but it's too cold to enjoy a morning walk. Am planking but max out at 60 sec. Abs are good but need to build up arm strength.

A friend of mine sent me a game called Boom Again (trivia for Boomers) & bought one for herself, so we spent the morning on Zoom figuring it out & playing it. I planked & spent the afternoon reading. Yikes, too much sitting. I will be off to Dance2fit in awhile (where we are supposed to wear holiday apparel and all the songs will be Christmas/Winter Holiday songs). I will probably do Zoom Yoga when I get home.

edj - good thought, and yes it's legal in Colorado. I finally broke down and asked pcp (through patient portal) for a referral to an orthopedist - she completed the referral to a doctor that specializes in elbows - but said it might take a couple days to get the referral. I will call the ortho's office tomorrow to see if they got the referral. Would love to get in next week if at all possible.
I'm officially on winter break. I managed to get everything done that I needed to get done. Tomorrow morning, I'll write my weekly update and put on my away message. I also told my intern that I would try to finish my letter of recommendation for her tomorrow. Other than that, work is done till January 4th!!!
The snow on the streets still has not melted with means it's cold as it usually melts quicker. We've haven't gotten a large amount of snow, but a couple inches here and there over the past week. Snow is in the forecast for an inch tomorrow - but the mountains getting more. Weather warming up next week to 50s by Sunday and Monday is predicted to be 58 then cooling off to 30s on Wednesday.
Those of you back east, stay safe and stay warm

Well, our forecast at bedtime last night had improved to 5-11 inches. I didn't hear any snowplows go by overnight so was disappointed when I got up this morning. Only to find about 23" on the ground. And it kept coming. We got about 30" in all. So even though a certain town nearby got 44", I will try not to complain
Today I have Zoom personal training (based on the Philadelphia lymphedema prevention a training program) Lots of squats with resistance band, and lunges and core work. An hour and she worked me hard! Then 30 minute rest and on to my rowing training session. Got 6,500 meters in! And a week post-infusion and I was having "GI distress" most of the day so I am pretty pleased with myself!
Edj: After an over-the-handlebars bad bike accident years ago and then a bad slip on ice accident a few years ago I don't think my wrists (or shoulder) will ever let me do a handstand again. Not sure I will ever even do a cartwheel again But you are inspiring!

edj, that looks dangerous!!! Impressive. TT, I always knew yoga was dangerous.Yeslama, you are inspiring too! Karen, hope the elbow can be fixed with physiotherapy. (Mine needed about a dozen or so visits). I'm also over my back pain, again with PT plus an infrared massager. The PT recommended heat and infrared penetrates deeper than thermal heat. I am set for the ski season, that is, if the lifts aren't locked down. We may find out tomorrow. They also don't want ski injuries creating more chaos at hospitals. I may just end up snowshoeing.
You plankers must have iron abs by now. Mine is getting a bit flabby. Will need to pick up weights more often or try some of that planking, I saw some versions I could do with a foam roller. I bought it sometime ago and is still crying to be used. Now I may have found the best use for foam rollers.

Did my plank FIRST this morning, then did weights. I did a couple of kick up attempts at the end and that is probably something that needs to go right after the morning plank

I am beyond jealous, Dragon. Really iffy in the mountains. May go Sunday if OK and not too soggy. Today is a frantic day as I have a Zoom event to orchestrate. Have to look spiffy and professional. Then off to Seattle to deliver puddings and Rillettes. My mission is to make sure that no one wastes away this Christmas. (If you ski, you can eat these things, and in fact you eat less as way, away from the fridge.
I am the person who was so desperate to go skiing one year that she ended up paying $96 to go skiing in the rain because my pass fell off my dashboard and I got a $75 fine that I couldn't dispute. Never again. - Claire

Did my plank (ah.....if only a couple minutes of planks would give me iron abs!) and will do some sort of indoor walking DVD as it is cold & windy out. We are having a Zoom Christmas Yoga tonight followed by a (Zoom) Social Hour with the beverage of one's choice (Claire, my beverage will be a nice Merlot).
A kind of interesting note about toning; awhile ago someone mentioned that they had had multiple abdomen surgeries & when they didn't do abs, they felt like their insides would fall out. I had a hernia repair about 10 years ago, and when I don't do abs for awhile (like when I was recently sick), that side starts aching, which goes away when I get back to ab work. I think it's because strong ab muscles are what's holding everything in place. I also notice that the arm where I had lymph nodes removed starts to feel heavy when I don't do arm work. I think that is because the blood is not being pumped through like it is when you are using your arms. So toning is important for lots of reasons more than one's clothes fitting better and/or being able to wear sleeveless tops (although those are nice perks of toning).

That was me, ruthbru!
I've had seven major abdominal surgeries and you better believe I work my abs all the time!

'Use it or lose it' is a totally true saying!

Hi Planksters! Glad to read we are sticking with it and 60 seconds is great! Ruth (you look terrific in your Christmas photo!) I teach a older populations class called Move It Or Lose It and it's a true statement . What is also true, at no matter what age you exercise - you will obtain positive results. I've seen people who stopped exercising around 55 and returned to exercise at 75 years of age - after as little as 12 week on a proper dose of regular exercise, they can regain 20% of strength lost. Strength = power and we need that as we age. I need not explain that to anyone here especially you edj3 - well done on handstands. Is your niece a yogi or CrossFitter? Had a 84 year old friend stop by to drop gifts by on his way to our local surgery for his vaccine this morning. We stayed outdoors, distanced and masked. He and his wife were to have Christmas day lunch with us but not now. They will be on their own and we will be as well. It's just the way it is, isn't it? Off to plank and then swing by the grocery store. We have a Mexican meal being delivered today from a restaurant in London. We had a delicious meal last Saturday from a restaurant in London called Cue Point . We had the Beef Rib NACO Kit and sent to dh's uncle Brisket Bun Kit. Tonight's dinning from Santo Remedio . We are foodies and doing our bit to keep London and local hospitality sector to stay in business and trying to thrive in Tier 3.
