Here's a fun picture from my Zumba class last night. One of our members turned 50 so we all wore black, bought cards etc.

Ruth: Your Zumba class is so much fun! And your instructor looks spunky and I bet your class is energizing.
Karen: Keeping your sil in my prayers. Please let us know how he is progressing from his surgery.
Getting back into my walking/running routine since being discharged from the hospital. I started slow and working my way back to how I felt before the hospital. Feels like I'm back to normal. Today I had a lot of paperwork to sort through and sat for a long time. There was still time at the end of the day to walk before the sun went down. It felt so good!

That Zumba teacher is crazy-fun! We use that whole area all the way back to the blue divider for our class (we moved closer together for the photo) so we are very safely spread out while exercising.
Yes, Karen please give us an update on your SIL.
We had some rain that turned to snow, so we'll have an icy/slushy mess in the morning.

Just a quick check in regarding SIL - he was doing well over the week-end and moving in the right direction. On Monday night he was Dx with C-Dff and was feeling quite lousy. He is waiting for a bed on the medical (vs surgical ward) - he is supposed to be a private room so who knows how long it will take. Medical system is so different in Canada. He is in a room with 2 other roommates. Not sure why he hasn't been moved on the surgical ward. And get this - medical doctors aren't allowed to be on surgical wards, but visitors are allowed. My daughter is fuming about how slow the nurses are in responding to his calls. Hoping today will be a better day.
Been snacking the past two nights and have gained 3+ pounds in the past 2-3 days - got to put the brakes on snacking!!!!! Need to get the couple pounds off and keep it from going up!!!!
Got to go get ready for the work day - I have a virtual sped meeting at 7:30 and it's 6:20. After the virtual meeting, I head to the building for the work day.

Ah I'm so sorry to hear he's not fully on the mend yet, Karen.
I wrapped up this week's exercise with a 1000 meter rowing warm-up followed by weights for legs and abs. Tomorrow is scheduled to be my rest day but that will depend on the weather forecast. I'm itching to get in another run and don't much care for running in the rain.

Karen, thanks for the update. Fingers crossed for surgical recovery, fighting off the C-Diff, and a bed in the medical ward.
Wonderland, good to hear from you. Glad you are back to feeling normal after hospital stay. Best wishes for continued wellness!
Ruth, fun Zumba pic. We have nothing like that here. Jealous! Your city did well to fund that community center.
It was almost 40 here yesterday and sunny. Got outside for a walk. In-person visit with mom today.

I have stayed off this message thread for months because I've been such a slug. Exercise has been a huge part of my entire adult life, but between Covid and then my Rx, I've done nothing more than walk the dog for months.
But that is about to change. I have taught spinning for 4 years, but not since the gym closed down in March. However, the College where I work (my real job) is starting up their spinning classes for students (gym is still closed to employees) and they had so many sign up they needed more instructors. So, starting next week, I get to teach 2 classes a week.
I am so excited, and I can't bore my family with it anymore, so I'm sharing with you all! I can't even imagine how awful it's going to be for the first few classes - I'm in terrible shape, and I'll have to teach with a mask . . . However, the students will also all be wearing masks, and one of the good things about spinning is that no one else knows how hard (or not) you're actually working.
I have always loved teaching fitness classes, in part because I have to show up. I can't decide I don't feel like it, or I'm too busy - I have to be there. Doesn't hurt that I also get paid...
I have plenty of weights at home, but I have just not been able to motivate myself to do anything at all since my August diagnosis. I'm hoping that getting back into some cardio will make me feel better, and perhaps inspire me to pick up a kettlebell.
Anyways, as said, I'm just excited and wanted to share.

Welcome, Rachel! How exciting to be able to teach a favorite class! I can always tell which teachers really love what they are doing and those are the fun classes for the students too! And it's good for the accountability because if you are the teacher, you have to show up and pretend you are enjoying yourself even when you aren't initially in the mood! I imagine you pick your own Playlist. Fun, fun!
I met up with 3 friends for a walk on the fitness center track this morning. We may walk puppies this afternoon (even though it is not very nice out) and Zumba tonight.

Hey Rachael--welcome! No one is a slug here, we're all sorting this out and doing what we can

Welcome Rachel! I need some motivation as well to pick up my kettlebell.
Karen sorry to hear about this setback. Hoping for a positive turn soon. Wonderland, sending healing thoughts post-hospital stay.
Edj, I am in Switzerland. The source of the Rhine River is in the Swiss canton of Graubünden.
Zumba and dogwalking today. Signs of spring sprouting everywhere.

I've only been to Switzerland once, lovely country.

Karen, medical doctors aren't allowed to be on surgical ward? What craziness is that?!! Hope SIL recovers quickly so he can get the heck out of there!

Yesterday was a top 10 day here in South West Florida. My family from Vermont came for a visit. We swam and swam at Englewood Beach, picked up many sharks teeth. My 8 year old grand nephew just loved it. As did the adults. Mid 80's no humidity. Makes you really enjoy life. My brother in law is a stage 4 throat cancer survivor and doing well. My sister and I walked the beach for miles. What a relaxing day

Welcome back, Rachel, so glad you get to teach again. Happy Happy Joy Joy!
It's been a while since I posted this inspiring video about the joys of exercise for everyone, in shape or not: This Girl Can.
Saw mom yesterday and learned I can visit every Weds. How great is that!?!
Came home, wrestled with new TV system (they discontinued our old one, we picked a new one, and it needed to be installed) then made stock for Calico Bean Soup. Did some decluttering and found my missing 1-pound hand weights. Those will be good additions to walking routine. All in all a good day.

Martaj, that sounds glorious!
I took my rest day today. Go me!

Martai, that sounds like the perfect day to me!!! I will meet you on the beach in 10 minutes!
Badger, I love that clip so much that I just watched it twice! It makes you want to go out and do something!
Thursday is my busy exercise day (only because 3 of the classes I love all have sessions). Pound this morning, Barre Sculpt & Dance2fit this evening. It is back in the 40s so for sure a dog walk this afternoon.

Hello, all! Been awhile since I popped in. Still doing several Zoom classes most days. Cardio Fit Steps (a fun ballroom/latin dance workout with a former professional dancer from UK's version of Dancing with the Stars) to start the day today. Upcoming is HIIT and Zumba Gold.
Received an email a couple of days ago from my local Senior Center, who is doing vaccines tomorrow. Called & got an appointment for tomorrow for the 1st one. It will be Moderna, and already have the 2nd date. Hubs gets his 2nd next week. Happy to be making progress on our vaccines.
Exercise on, everyone!

Hi Celia, good to see you! Glad you're keeping up on exercise and congrats on getting your vaccinations.
DH is playing poker today so enjoying the P&Q at home. Did 30 mins treadmill with the stereo blasting an old Brasil '66 record. Samba! And no headphones!
Edit to satisfy my earworm for Mas Que Nada.

Stopped by to say Hi and update on my SIL - he is still in the hospital - on a medical ward finally. He has c-diff and I think he is responding to the antibiotics. I ask DD if they had a discharge date and she said not yet - they want to make sure he is getting enough calories and they are debating rehab or home. Sunday will be 5 weeks in the hospital. DD has a UTI. These two kids can't get a break.
Yesterday, my BIL (DH's brother) had emergency gallbladder surgery - he had been having symptoms for years but waited till he was in agony - doctor said he was close to sepsis, but thank G-d not. They had to cut him open vs laprascopic (sp) due to too much infection. He will be discharged on Tuesday.
I tell you, February has not been a good month!!!
We got 12" of snow by my house yesterday. It's warm and sunny today so a lot has melted. We needed the snow. Attended NASP. convention. virtually and there were great sessions. It was supposed to be in Salt Lake City. Next year Boston and in 2 years Denver. So many people commented in the chat that they hoped some aspects could stay virtual. One of the presenters said he had 30 people last year in his session and this year 2K!!!
Looking forward to relaxing this week-end. It feels like its been a long, long week. DH just said that worrying about family is draining.
Have a good week-end.

I'm trying to catch up on a few recent posts. Covid has definitely made me lazier. I've gained 7 lb during this past year. For the first time in my life I am tipping the scales at 132. I continue to exercise but not as often and I eat all the time. Fortunately, I eat healthy but still taking in a lot of calories. I have always found this site to be filled with wonderful women who inspire one another to be the best we can be in the moment.
Reading all the great things you guys have been doing will inspire me to get off my butt.
Ruth-I agree with you. Safety first
Badger-Hi.
Claire- beautiful pictures.
Wonderland -hope you're feeling better soon

Goodness Karen, I hope you can have a relaxing weekend with only good news on the medical front for your BIL and SIL.
It's a beautiful day here. I went to Yogi Breathing and Nidra, cleaned the house, grabbed the grandpuppies and met DS's girlfriend & her dog for a walk in the park. I took down all the snowmen and other wintery decorations. I am declaring spring no matter what the weather does!

Hi Jo, good to see you and glad you are inspired!
Hey Ruth, did you see this story in the news? The gin-soaked raisins made me think of your home remedy!
This 105-Year-Old Beat Covid. She Credits Gin-Soaked Raisins.
By Tracey Tully, New York Times, published Feb. 23, 2021, updated Feb. 24.
Ask Lucia DeClerck how she has lived to be 105, and she is quick with an answer: "Prayer. Prayer. Prayer," she offers. "One step at a time. No junk food."
But surviving the coronavirus, she said, also may have had something to do with another staple: the nine gin-soaked golden raisins she has eaten each morning for most of her life.
"Fill a jar," she explained. "Nine raisins a day after it sits for nine days."
Her children and grandchildren recall the ritual as just one of Ms. DeClerck's endearing lifelong habits, like drinking aloe juice straight from the container and brushing her teeth with baking soda. (That worked, too: She did not have a cavity until she was 99, relatives said.)
"We would just think, 'Grandma, what are you doing? You're crazy,'" said her 53-year-old granddaughter, Shawn Laws O'Neil, of Los Angeles. "Now the laugh is on us. She has beaten everything that's come her way."
It is a long list. Born in 1916 in Hawaii to parents who came from Guatemala and Spain, she lived through the Spanish flu, two world wars and the deaths of three husbands and a son. ... To her two surviving sons, five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren, who call her Grandma Lucia, she has a new moniker, Ms. O'Neil said: "The 105-year-old badass who kicked Covid."

Proof positive for the ginned raisins! 😀

Karen: I am glad there is some movement in a positive direction (Finally!) for your SIL!
Snowing here now, but supposed to rain later There is quite a crust on the snow now, so we went out to check out some tracks this morning and didn't post-hole at all!
Sugaring season here, but don't think the open sugar houses will happen this year.
I rowed my 100,000 meters in February. Had my strength workout last night. May take a rest day, or if the weather is favorable do something outside tomorrow.
I hope everyone is well!

Also, this seems like a good group to ask about online (preferably on-demand) exercise dance classes. I want my lovely DH to learn to dance with me for upcoming weddings this summer of his kids, but also want us to have fun exercise to do together. I don't think he is quite up for Zumba, but I'd like something more upbeat than ballroom. Eventually I want us to be able to Jitterbug together (my father never managed to teach me) as well as not embarrass ourselves (or the kids!) on the dance floor this summer.

Yes, I googled 'online dance lessons for couples ' and quite a few options came up....including many that are free.
I did PiYo and 30 minutes on the treadmill today.

Karen, hoping all your family heals quickly. Five weeks - that sounds horrible.
Been doing fine with exercise, did a horrible day of eating and drinking yesterday, cravings were just too much.
Keep on keeping on!

If anyone is interested in the gin soaked raisins that Badger mentioned:
'Drunken Raisins'-a natural arthritis remedy. (my aunt & mom swore by this 'cure')
To prepare gin-soaked raisin, first empty one box of dried white raisin in a shallow container. Only white or golden raisin should be used for this recipe. Then pour enough gin into the container to cover the raisins.
Cover the container ( but not with plastic, a kitchen towel is good) and keep it covered for 7 – 10 days on the to allow the raisin to steep in the gin (sitting out, not in fridge).
Allow all the gin to evaporate to leave gin-soaked raisins in the container. These raisins keep well when refrigerated. The popular advice is to take nine of these "drunken raisins" every day. Most users report improvements in arthritis symptoms between 1 – 8 weeks of using this remedy.
Why it works:
1. Golden raisins- the ONLY type of raisins worthy of the recipe- require sulfur or sulfides in their processing to make them golden. Sulfur is an active ingredient in 2 effective natural arthritis supplenents: glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate. Golden raisins come from sultana grapes and are cultivated under the name Thompson seedless grapes in the United States.
2. Sultana grapes contain proanthocyanidins which are thought to help fight infections and reduce inflammation. Grapes also contain resveratrol, a powerful anti-oxidant that is being studied for many of it's disease fighting properties.
3. Gin is flavored with juniper berries and juniper berries contain Terpinen. Terpinen has anti inflammatory properties. The essential oil that is in juniper berries contains more than 100 compounds including myrcene (an anti oxidant), catechins (anti-oxidant), and flavanoids (anti oxidant). Test tube studies have shown that juniper berries can inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Prostaglandins help mediate an inflammatory response and increase the sensitivity of nerve endings to pain. By inhibiting their production, a reduction in pain can occur. To prepare gin-soaked raisin, first empty one box of dried white raisin in a shallow container. Only white or golden raisin should be used for this recipe. Then pour enough gin into the container to cover the raisin.0 -
Ruth - sounds interesting but I don't like raisins and I don't like gin!!!
Both SIL and BIL are on the mend. BIL called my DH today.BIL should go home on Tuesday. SIL called earlier - he needs to meet with OT, PT and dietician tomorrow - they are looking at rehab for him, but won't discharge him till he is accepted somewhere. DD is looking at places - they only have OHIP (provincial insurance - no extra supplemental) so not sure if that limits their options or not. But at least he is going in the right direction.
Cold but sunny today - snow is melting. I've been semi-productive but really need to get more done. Cubii this morning and 1 walk - want to go for another one in the next hour while the sun is still high enough to feel the warmth. Tomorrow is getting high 40s to 50 for the next few days so the rest of the snow should be gone by mid week.
Have a great rest of Sunday.

Karen - Glad to hear SIL and BIL are recovering.
My sister-in-law goes to see her oncology surgeon tomorrow to discuss scan results that show she has gallstones, She is still recovering from cancer surgery last year resulting in the removal of her abdominal organs (including uterus, but not bladder) and colostomy. She has also had a mastectomy w/chemo and clitoridectomy w/radiation related to cancer. She just cannot get a break!
Badger - Mas Que Nada was such a popular song in my household. Love it when we use it in Zumba Gold classes.
Did 3 Silver Sneakers classes today - Classic, Boom Mind and Cardio Mix. Always make a good start to Sunday!
Glad the weather seems to breaking a little for those who have had the cold and snow. Hope it calms down for a little while.
