Lets Post our Daily Exercise

Sorry b123. The short answer is that I do a combination of what I love to do and what I hate but what has proven to be effective and is a combination of a 10 lb free weight routine and crunches on an exercise ball on weekdays.
The fun items are:
- A minimum of a 2 mile daily walk unless I am doing something else
- Nordic skiing
- Cycling, once I get my bicycle back from repair and the weather warms up/ski season ends
- Running, which I just started doing again now that I have discovered a nice route that I can do out my front door. Running might be a bit optimistic a description, but I do 4-6 miles.
- Swimming in the summer. I am excited to now be living next to a river with a swimming beach!!!
- Hiking when the spirit moves. Hoping to get in one this coming weekend.
- And new for this coming spring, I am getting a kayak. The plan is for my friend and me to greet the sunrise on lake Coeur d'Alene for the Summer Solstice.
I also try to "reverse engineer" exercise into my life where possible. Those extra quarter miles of doing errands on foot do add up. I am planning on doing a lot of errands by bicycle this summer as have learned that I can take cycling paths most of the way to my favorite supermarket.Hope this helps. - Claire
Note: I am not a "classes" person and think that the purpose of gyms is to kick my butt out the door. There are exercise machines in my complex, but I do not use them. I do walk down to the river which is where I am headed to get in the glimmers of sunshine before the next round of showers moves in.

b123 - no one beats Claire...but I do like classes and do barre similar to that picture but without weights on my wrists...I do yoga (various styles), tai chi, pilates, barre. Typically 6 days a week something. I also teach and can walk up to a mile in an 80 minute lecture class as I move around the room. I also live downtown in my small town so can walk to work/church/farmer's market, etc...so like Claire get extra exercise via activities of daily living. TT

Claire, wow you stay very active, all sounds good without the stress on the chest wall. So I’m thinking that’s what I need to stick to? I feel good and feel like I can do more, I start doing weight bearing and push ups or planks and I’m in trouble again. I honestly forget each time and then it scares me thinking I did something to the implants. But yes will stick to walking/running, and maybe look into something for upper body without stress?
Trmtab you do barre and yoga and it doesn’t bother you or hurt the chest wall? Your very lucky. The pain I endure under arms, around my chest and sides of my trunk is teeth chattering sometimes, then I have to realize what I did. My arms are getting flabby and I just hate it. I was never told not to weight bear but as I read others stories, that’s what I’m understanding? thanks ladies!

Hi Everyone - long time no see. Good to read and see the photos of what is happening with all of you. I've been busy with teaching yoga & Pilates in gyms and in the community such as yoga for cancer, pink ribbon Pilates and a very well attended Parkinson's exercise class.
b123, has any medical professional looked at why you have such strong truncal pain issues?
Let's keep at it! LB,xx

Lilacblue, no I have never been told anything. I don't know why this happens? It's a week later and still have achiness under my arms. I'm envious of all of your exercise routines. Do you think this is of concern? I wonder if it’s more of Costochondritis? When I push on my sides (ribs) under my arms it almost feels good (relief) it’s pressure/achiness). Maybe my system just can’t handle upper body stress

LB - so great to see you, I have thought of PM'ing you almost every week for some time now. Hope your DH is okay. I was day dreaming planning a trip to London and thought...I'm going to take a side trip and see if our friend is okay! Hope to make to one of your classes some day.
B - after each surgery (5 in 3 years) I needed to rebuild my abilities/tolerance but have been able to do so. I have wondered why so many yoga poses are flat on your belly (and thus chest) or weird twists that really torque your chest cavity, but now after 3 years without a surgery, the only difficulties I have are in my own abilities, not pain or other issues. Agree with LB, I would have this checked out if it is over 6 months from surgery.

So what I have found out is many women suffer from postmastectomy reconstruction syndrome (PMRS) for years and ongoing. So I need to see a specialist for dos and fonts and ways I can exercise my upper body without pain. There are a lot of options to manage the pain, so will check that out to. Hopefully will get a routine and can keep a healthy lifestyle.
THANK YOU0 -
b123 - welcome - I'm a walker - I try for 15K steps/day. I try to get out at lunch at work for 20 minutes, then when I get home and after dinner with my DH. In the morning I use my Cubii (under the desk elliptical) for an hour. I don't enjoys class and not one to use equipment so in some ways I'm surprised I've kept up with the Cubii for 1 1 /2 years but now I'm addicted. The walking is so good for my mental health and attitude. And my oncologist says its good for my bones!!! So I joke and say I have an Rx for walking!
It's raining and supposed to turn to snow shortly. Forecast is 3-7". Pretty wide range if you ask me. DH said some models say up to 12". Wonder what we will actually get. If the roads are bad in morning, I can work from home as I have a zoom meeting 8-10 and then helping interview 10:30 - 11:30. Then I can head over to school.
Sweet dreams

Welcome, b123! Any time I try to go back to see your original post, the site kicks me out. They obviously haven't fixed the glitches yet.....grrrr. It can take a LONG time for things to settle down after surgery, and it is smart to see a specialist to help get things sorted out.
Hi Lilac, great to hear from you!
I just got back from a lovely Arizona vacation. I will now attempt to post a picture of one of the places where we hiked.

Karen, thank you, happy to be here! Wow that’s a lot of walking and peddling. Great idea for sure. Do you ever try upper body exercises? I’m not one for the classes either nor the gym, I like doing at home exercises. But once in a while I feel like I can do anything and try the barre or push-ups, I think I am hurting myself more then helping? Glad I found this group! Hope you didn’t get too much snow!
Ruth thank you! Your pictures are lovely! I see your a walker as well. I don’t know how some can do so much with upper body including lifting and planks where as some can’t even tolerate a 2lb wt?? My shoulders sides and chest ache and zingy sometimes. It settles with ibprofen. But just concerns me that I’m so restricted after all this time. I shouldn’t complain because I thank god everyday for being here and having another day to complain lol.
thanks for the warm welcome ladies and your support.0 -
b123, get checked by the doctor first. Once you get the clear, you can start some upper body work (maybe a PT referral would be in order?). If you are doing it on your own (or in a class setting), first just start doing the movements with NO weights, when that feels comfortable you can switch to soup cans, then 1 pound weights, 2 pounds etc. I think being VERY gradual, and very consistent is the key. I concentrated on more of a lower body toning routine while my upper body was healing and actually lost a pant size (without losing any weight), so that was a silver lining for me.
For me it took several YEARS for the 'zinginess' to go away completely. Even now if I overdo it, I get achy. Sigh.......I very much like to walk but am more of a class person. I like the socialization part and the fact that someone else is telling me what to do, I don't have to figure it out for myself. One thing I did that helped me to stay accountable was to decide how much aerobic and how much toning I wanted to get each week & then entered the time in a notebook, dividing it into 15 minute increments (since you should be able to do almost anything for 15 minutes). I'd check off the time as I exercised to be sure to meet my goals. A fitbit or other fitness tracker is also good for that.
As for my exercise today, I've been running around town doing errands. I may go to Barre Sculpt at 4:30. I signed my dog up for Obedience School so will have to skip my evening Thursday night Zumba classes for the next 8 weeks!

Lilac: SO GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU! I have missed you and hoping you're okay.
Welcome b123! I agree with the advice already given. I also suggest getting it checked out by medical professionals.
We are having some much needed work done in the basement. Will have workers pounding away for several more days. Drives the cats crazy! Speaking of cats, on Wednesday one of them brought in a live bird through the cat door and I didn't know it. Our 2 cats were running all around and next thing I know a bird zoomed over my head! Luckily dh was able to get him outside safely.
I mentioned awhile back that dd is getting married in October. Her wedding dress has been ordered so it's time for me to look for a Mother of the Bride dress (I think that's such a weird way to describe a dress lol). I ordered one and it came in the mail today. Looks great on the model but looks like a bathrobe on me. It's going back in the mail tomorrow.
Been walking and a little running. Getting out of my slump piece by piece. The bird excitement helped.

Nothing like chasing a bird around the house (or a baby bunny......which one of my cats once brought in) to perk a person up!

b123 - I used weights (2 -3#) for awhile but then I got tennis elbow and had to stop and never started back - so no I don't do any upper body or core strength exercise.
Wonder - hope you find a dress you like. I have trouble with dresses so for my DD#1 wedding, I had a 2 piece dressy outfit - skirt and jacket. My foobs and rest of the body just don't do dresses!!! Maybe if I was willing to break down and wear a bra it might work, but I prefer my tank tops under my tops.
We got several inches of wet heavy snow but it melted off the streets by the end of the day. Thankfully, I could work from home this morning and not deal with messy roads. Supposed to be warm Saturday and Sunday and then snow again early next week. Spring time in the Rockies!
DD#2 arrives in 26 days - not that I'm counting. Her birthday is Saturday! She will celebrate with her friends and we will celebrate her when she is here. DD#1 is also supposed to come and her b'day is early May so if she is here, we will also celebrate her!
I have labs at 7:45 tomorrow morning. Appt with hematologist is in 1 1/2 weeks and medical oncologist a couple weeks later. They do both labs at once. I will be able to see them on the patient portal probably by Monday.
One more week till spring vacation and it can't come soon enough!!

Thank you for thinking of me and I've been trying to keep up, if I could get in. The new upgrade seems to be getting better.
b123, those with implants can also have issues with scar tissue. Do get it checked out. I get passing pec pain now and then on my DIEP left and usually shows up when learning a new bodyflow release - new muscles used. Many who have reconstruction have some residual pain from reconstruction - even years later. What I experience mostly is not pain per se, a discomfort, chalking it up to Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS).
trmtab, Love to meet up with you if in this part of the world.
Have a super spring-like weather weekend everyone!

ladies you are all so great and inspiring! Love it here! Thank you for the advice.
LilacBlue I think you hit it right on the nail, that’s exactly what is happening. I don’t use my upper body, never had the right PT for it so when I do something “crazy” it hits me hard but delayed. I’m told that I need to strengthen my backside/scapular area to relieve pressure from chest. Each day feels a bit better, I’ve been heating and ibprofen, no upper body exercises for now. I’m thinking to change over to just fat grafting, these implants are just to much trouble. Will see.
Karen, strange how that can happen with just 2-3lbs, so do you do any stretches? I feel like my arms are getting weak and flabby.Wonderland, thank you! So happy to be here with all of you positive lights!
Ruth, you do Zumba and Pilates? Wow that’s great! So jealous. I think I will be taking up the walk-in go a bit more then I was. Great advice!! Your pictures are beautiful, you live in a great area.
Thank you all

I visit beautiful areas; there's still snow on the ground where I live. 😆
I'm off to a Core class and will then try to find a dry place to walk the dog.
I am still finding the BCO update very unwieldy. I HOPE they are working on ways to make it faster and easier to navigate!

Hi Everyone. I see the Discussion Board is back up. Still too white. I hate to think we're stuck with this.
On a happier note, I have been walking regularly. We are having work done in the basement and part of that was having a wall put up. I painted it over the weekend. My arm is still sore! Got lots of steps moving things bc next week we are having a new floor installed. The basement has become a storage unit with furniture, exercise equipment, decorations, etc. Going through some of it as I moved it but definitely will be more selective as I put things back. Going to set a high bar for what gets to stay.
Painted this sunflower door hanger yesterday. Please consider it as a Welcome Back from me to you. I have missed all of you!

Hello to all! Warm welcome to new members & very happy to hear from everyone. Problems w/the "new" platform have prevented being here. Just reading through and catching up. All good here - still doing my mix of Cancer Support Community classes and Silver Sneakers (all via Zoom), As they say: keep on keeping on!

Wonder - love the sunflower.
I haven't been on here since the 18th. Took a gamble to see if the boards were up and running again and low and behold, here I am.
I am officially on spring break. So happy to have the week off. Going to work in the house - cleaning for Passover and spring cleaning.

Hi everyone,
It’s still glitchy but getting a bit better.
Wonderland- I love that painting. I need to do a big basement clearing as well. It’s full of stuff we ended up with after my MIL passed away and when our daughters moved out but didn’t have space for all their stuff. What a job!
LB- good to see you here. Hope you and DH are well.
B123- have you been evaluated for lymphedema? I think everyone should see a PT who is knowledgeable about lymphedema after breast surgery.
Karen- enjoy your break. Ours isn’t until 4/18.
Happy Friday

I just checked to see if I could get in, and happily I could! I've been going to my regular classes, walking etc. I am also doing a basement project! I'm painting the very large family room & hallway, ceiling, and maybe (or maybe not) some paneling. Now that I've taken all the pictures from the walls, I've decided to put very few back up which should make things look less clutter. I'm going from a pretty dark blue to a silver (accent color to be determined), so that should brighten things up nicely. Lots of work, that is for sure!
Bruno (and we) started Obedience School last night.....wish us luck!

Hi Everyone and thank you for the well wishes. DH son and mom have dodged Covid thus far. No more free home tests here in England as of April 1, as this misguided government is led by donkeys, Covid as a past issue that we simply accept and live with. I home test twice a week as masks are not required. Covid cases are rising yet no one has to isolate if you have Covid.
DH has been deemed not a heart transplant canadate for now after going through all investigations that makes up the decision. He goes into London once a week and stays in a hotel to work in the office 2 days a week. This has worked out to be cheaper than a daily commute and so many have covid, that f2f meetings are cancelled regularly. The main vector has proven to be the traditional pint in the pub after works. As neither Dh or I drink , that transmission point has been sidestepped.
I teach 2 free cancer community classes and music to my ears the some of you do attend them. Last Monday Pink Ribbon Pilates was small all attended by women who have been through treatment in the past 12 months. As we went through that weeks lesson plan they talked about the experience. It was so good and bonded this little group. I also teach Yoga for Cancer, and we had a new member last week who was able to feel less alone on his stage 4 journey with other class members support and relaxed somewhat in said company. My greatest hurrdle has alwaya been getting members of the community to attend these classes.
It's Mother's Day here today and we will have a barbecue later. I woke to the joy of our elderly border collie having peed and pooed on the kitchen floor. Opened email a to find ds had given me a voucher to Sweaty Betty's - ❤️ that boy!
Let's keep at it! LBxx

Karen: Have a fabulous Spring Break!
Ginger and Ruth: Hoping the new floor will be installed this week in the basement. I've been cleaning the current floor getting ready for the new one. The new one will go over the old one. Thankful the old one doesn't have to be removed.
LB: Happy Mother's Day! Your precious dog wanted to make sure you knew you were still needed as a mother.
Hi All. On Friday dh and I spread 60 bales of pine needles around the house, trees, etc. My legs were so sore afterwards! Met dd today for a walk on a beautiful 60 degree day.

I painted most of yesterday & gave myself a day off today (to get other things done; which included Barre Sculpt, Yoga, three loads of clothes, grocery shopping & making a dinner for our sick friend). I hope to get all the 'shimmering silver' done tomorrow but has yet to figure out the accent walls. I need something to warm things up but not close the room in. Decisions, decisions!

- Pound, and a Dog Hike today. Karen, you are sending another Colorado Low our way, so we have rain turning to snow predicated for the next couple days.

I think we hit 80 today!!!!
Great time hiking over the week-end. I'll post some pictures from my phone. Beautiful blue skies, sunny and pleasant temperatures in the mountains.
Defrosted my freezer. Tomorrow morning I will tackle some more in the house before my 1:00pm doctor appt. Hopefully, I'll pick back up when I get home.
15 days till DD#2 arrives and 22 till DD#1 arrives - not that I'm counting!!!
Ruth and Wonder - lots of work in your houses.
LB - I didn't realize that your DH was looking at a heart transplant. I hope not being a candidate is good news. Happy mother's day a day late. Nice treat from your DS.

Ruth: I bet you're ready to not see snow for awhile.
Karen: Your hike sounds delightful. Looking forward to pictures.
Mowed for the first time this year. Dh's mower didn't start so we took turns using mine. I push mowed for 1 hour and 25 minutes. Got to get used to it again!

I tried getting on the boards from my phone, but I couldn't get on. On my computer its not letting me post pictures!!! I will probably post some photos on FB.
Wonder - that is a lot of mowing. Do you have FB? If so can you message me you FB name?
Wild fire season has started early here in Colorado. There have been 2 or 3 in the past week or so.
Cold and damp and rain this afternoon. I'm sure we are not done with snow yet - especially the mountains, but Denver too could get snow. My first year here in 1986, The beginning of April, Denver got 2 feet of snow. We were living in Evergreen and got 3 feet. It came in on a Thursday and was mostly gone by Sunday. Growing up east of the Mississippi, I never saw snow in April or May and definitely not melt so quickly!!!
Have a great Tuesday.

Karen, I wonder if you could download pictures from Facebook & then copy them here from your computer? I sure wish that BCO could get the technical stuff worked out because this is a pain in the you know where!!
Gloomy but mild here. I'll do some dog things ( including our Obedience School homework which is 15 minutes of loose leash walking every day; stopping & waiting whenever Bruno pulls......needless to say it's not much exercise because we stop a lot!) and Barre Sculpt. It's supposed to start raining later today, which will turn to snow overnight. Blah!
