    Hi All,

ruthbru, I have a little dog that is only 14 lbs, somedays I swear he is more like a cat - licking his paws clean for hours.  I did a 50 minute routine at the gym today.  It was great.

Heavy rains here - one of those chilled to your bones days.  Stay well everyone!

Oh misswim- my heart is breaking for you and your family... this disease sucks!!!  I want to punch something for you. Please take care of yourself!

    Thanks for the surgery wishes:

I am back from my oopharectomy surgery and am resting pretty comfortably at the moment. i took 800 mg of motrin around 3 pm and it just feels like I have bad cramps and did a million sit ups at the moment.(at least what I imagine it would feel like because I have never really attempted this). If this is as bad as it gets; I will be very psyched! I think having the lumpectomy,NSBMX and the dreaded expanders have actually increased my pain tolerance and I don't notice pain quite so much anymore. The Dr said everything looked good and we will go over the pathology when I see her in 2 weeks.  Meeting with Onc on 12/23 to determine which pill to take. Most likely aromatase inhibitor.

I am a bit sleepy so will read everyone's posts later; have a great night!

Body Pump and Combat classes tonight although my knees were screaming, sometimes I really feel my age but had to do a little extra to make up for the calories I ate last night at a Christmas get together, I think I consumed 5000 of those lovely little swedish meatballsSurprised.  Ruth I got out the Christmas cards to start and that's as far as I got and a lot of mine have to go to Australia and the UK so I need to get moving - every year I swear I'm going to do them Thanksgiving weekend but I never make it, ah well.

30 min cardio kickboxing this morning. It's going to be a really cold winter, but I want to try to run outside. Santa may come early for me this year and bring me some outdoor running gear.

Hello all...I am about to start TC x 4 on 12/22. I have been very active up to dx, biking 100 miles per week, working with weights 2 hours per week. The fatigue since dx and surgery has been overwhelming and I am only now getting back to "normal" with my fitness routine. Did regular weight training yesterday and it felt so good. I would be interested to hear others' experiences with working out during chemo.

Misswim - I'm so sorry!!! Sending hugs to you and your family.

Cheryl - I always have the same thoughts about getting the Christmas cards done over Tkg, and of course it never happens.  We're going up to the cabin this weekend and that's our project.

We had a wonderful time at the White House - the decorations were spectacular.  And there's such a sense of history walking through those historic rooms and realizing how many Presidents and First Ladies have lived there.  The trip included a tour of the Library of Congress, then time at the shops and restaurants of Union Station.  Of course it was pouring rain all day, and the bus had to drop us off blocks from each destination because of security concerns, so we did a lot of walking.  The good thing is that it burned a lot of calories!

ckk - everyone is different with their chemo experience.  I was also very active prior to chemo.  For me, the effects were cumulative.  After the first cycle, I was back to my normal vigorous activities - elliptical, Pilates, yoga, weight training, etc. after a few days. By the 6th and last cycle, the fatigue was so horrible it was all I could do to drag myself around the block for a walk. I also worked full time through chemo - so if you're working or have other obligations like caring for small children or elderly parents, the fatigue will probably catch up more with you.  But everyone is different - some people sail through chemo and are able to maintain a decent workout schedule, but others can't do that.  My advice would be to do what you can, even if all you can manage is a 10 minute walk.  Once chemo is done, you can start to work back to your normal schedule.  Good luck!

Edited - forgot to add my exercise this morning - 20 minutes Pilates, 10 minutes elliptical, 15 minutes Lebeds.

PT session this a.m. - strengthening arms and shoulders with Therabands (love those!).  ROM is almost maximized - so happy.  It's a lovely day - out for a brisk walk around the block and to get the mail.  Only thing missing is my dog.

orangemat   I haven't done yoga in years but am a long time pilates student and teacher.  Is there a particular style of yoga that would be good to get into, post surgery - BMX w/recon?  My local studio offers several styles - can't remember which - and also hot, which I should probably avoid at first.

Joy - just be careful with the Therabands - is your PT aware you're at risk for LE since you had nodes removed so she knows to adjust your program accordingly?  Not all PT are aware that special precautions need to be taken - there are a couple of women who post in the LE section who actually got LE from going through PT (including the use of therabands) with therapists who did not incorporate proper LE precautions.  My LE therapist used therabands as part of my rehab so they can be appropriate for use by those who have or who are at risk for LE, but you need to build up extremely gradually.

NatsFan -  Thanks for your response about LE.  The PT measured at the first session for LE (minimal, but something) and today I got a compression sleeve for travel.  Part of the hour today was spent learning lymphatic drainage massage - weird technique - with the pattern of which way to go.  It will take a few times to get the hang of it.  She seems very knowledgable about LE, and feels that I'm strong and ready to go with an exercise routine.  But I don't know if she's an LE specialist - she is a PT.  Good point about taking it easy - I'm so ready to get things moving along, faster than I probably should.  I was ready to go out and buy a Theraband and get in another session tomorrow - I will wait and see.    On another note - I moved from Fairfax last summer, and really miss the D.C. area.  I bet the White House tour was great - I was there 2 years ago for a Christmas tour, really special.

ckk-welcome to the thread.  This place keeps me motivated.  I did not do chemo but I can tell you that I stayed active as soon as possible after surgery and through rads.  Had to take a few weeks break at the end of rads because I was so raw but other than that I think staying active helped me heal.

I had a PT session yesterday and the therapist is trying to get shoulder back in alignment.  Things have been way messed up since rads, but am getting it all back together.  I then went and had a great yoga session although it was kinda tough since it followed my PT session. Going for a message today because the PT found a huge knot in my ligamant so going to get that worked on tonight so no exercise for me today just relaxation.

Joy - sounds like you have a good PT therapist.  So you know what I'm talking about with how spectacular the White House decorations are.

One fun incident from the trip yesterday - the woman in the seat across the bus aisle from me had a pink ribbon totebag.  I asked her about it and she said she was a survivor.  I asked her how many years, and here's the great thing - she had to actually take a minute to think about it!!!  It's been 22 years for her and she's going strong.  I sure hope I'm lucky enough to reach the point someday where I have to stop and think how long it's been!!  She and I had a long discussion about b/c - she was fascinated to hear about all the advancements in treatment, such as the hormone testing, genetic testing, and recon options.

hi all and welcome ckk.  I got in 3.75 miles today walking around the office and at break.

Sherry, I saw an ad today for hot stone massage, wouldn't that just melt the knot away..

Mary, the tour sounds wonderful, and so does the lady on the bus.  We have come so far since my mom found a lump 30+ years ago and had a radical Halstead mx and a silicone implant.

Got to say that surgery alone can make us prone to LE.  It's not just lymph nodes, it's also the lymphatic vessels.  They can be cut during surgery or crushed during accidents.  Here's a really good page, with pics and diagrams.  http://www.lymphnotes.com/article.php/id/151/

    TTFN Tarts!

Misswim...I am so sorry for your loss.  I wish you and your family peace, strength and serenity.

Not much exercise here.  Just some strength training and ab work.  Weekend is coming and I am going to try out the run 3 to walk 1 approach (thank you to orangemat!).  I will see how that pans out.

     Wishing you all well.

Welcome cck! As others have said, everyone's chemo experience is different. I would say to do what you can, but do something. The first couple of days after, I would often just put on my tennis shoes and walk around and around the house. Later in the cycle I would be back to a more normal aerobic routine. One good thing I did was to do a lot of lower body toning. I was scared to do much upper body, but did so much lower that I actually lost a pants size (without losing weight....so it was all from toning).

I had a long meeting, then stayed and watched the middle school fall drama production. So I didn't get home until 8:30pm...... went straight downstairs and did an hour on the treadmill. I'm tired. TGIF!!!!!!!

Tonight 5 of us from my gym drove up to Pasadena to do a Body Jam class only trouble is we got stuck in horrible traffic and even though we had left in plenty of time we were 1/2 an hour late for the class so only got to dance for 30 minutes but the journey was filled ith lots of good talk and laughter.

Welcome ckk.  Mary the White House tour sounds wonderful, there is a show on HGTV this weekend about the decorations so I'm going to watch it.  Spring how lovely to see the blue birds they are so pretty.

Thanks everyone! I used the elliptical for 45 miunutes yesterday and will weight train today with my trainer. I have a question for all of you - my surgeon told me that since I only had one lymph node removed, that I don't need to take any special precaution moving forward after recovery (like a compression sleeve) when I work out or go on an airplane. I've been taking it easy on that arm when I do weights, but wondered what kind of feedback you all got about this? Am I being foolish here not wearing a sleeve during weight training?

ckk keep up  the good work.  As far as lympnodes are concerened I had multiple taken out on my left side and one removed on my right. My surgeon seems quite proactive regarding lymphedema prevention and gave me a script for a sleeve to be worn preventatively on my left.  But, no concern about my right.  I use that arm for BP and blood draws also.
