Susan B. - dx last year at age 45 as a result of mammo. Appeared to be about 4mm on mammo, but was actually shown to be 9mm once removed. No family history.

Debbie Fine, diagnosed at age 50.

dx at age 38 found by digital mammogram, absolutely no family history of breast cancer and I am the youngest of 6 girls. Radiologist told me that an analog mammogram would have never detected my micro calcifications due to my breasts being dense.

The first time I was diagnosed at the age of 45 was with DCIS. It was so wide spread that I had to have a mastectomy. This was found when I had my first mammogram! Even though my doctor suggested getting a mammogram when I was 40, I put it off. I was diagnosed again at the age of 49. This time it was a lump which I found myself. I have been very lucky to have survived both of these occurences. I can not believe what the new guideline is recommending. No family history!!

Michele VonGerichten, dx at age 46 - February 2009. Found lump during self exam in January 2009. 3 cm tumor, IDC. What would have happened to me if I had waited?????? DO NOT change the guidelines!! How many women will have to die?

Why am I not surprised at this latest medical "breakthrough". Come on, ladies, scream to the high heavens. Fight till your knuckles are bloody. What will replace the mammogram and self-exams which they deem of so little value? WHAT CAUSES OUR BREAST CANCER IN THE FIRST PLACE? I heard a medical professional on the news this morning saying that the lives saved were too few not to make this recommended change. What if it were hers?

Charlotte Stratton, dx age 51, my tumor didn't show on mammogram, but these recommendations are a "slippery slope" -- probably just what the insurance companies have been waiting for ...

Chris Kunkle, dx age 42 as a result of my first mammogram. I have no family history.
These proposed changes make me ANGRY!

Can the society organize a campaign of fundraising for hiring a lobbyist(s) to stop the manipulative action of the so-called task force? I will definitely do my best to support it. I can't imagine a country used to be a country for people to have the rights of "life and pursuit of happiness"
Talking, discussion, anger, anxiety do not stop them. We have to do something to stop it.

Dx at age 47; found the lump thru self exam less than 6 months ago. If I had not, the cancer would still be growing inside me.
I feel like our heath is being sacrificed in exchange for getting insurance companies to support the struggling health care bill. When did the women of this country become expendable ?

Sharing stories won't stop them. Let's do something to save ourselves and more others.I hope somebody can organize campaign, write letters to the senators, congresses, and hiring lobbyist to stop it.

Why did the authors of the guidelines only say "a 3% reduction in mortality" is gained by screening women ages 39-49? And that "only 1 death would be prevented among every 1,904 women" in that age group screened for 10 years?
Could it be because saying 1,200 deaths per year, and 12,000 deaths over 10 years, is clearly an atrocity, and not a "minor benefit"????????
(Previously signed this petition: AnnNYC -- lump never visible on mammogram, found by breast self-exam at age 54)

Lisa Baumgart age 46,diagnosis by SBE. No family history, not caught on regular mammogram.
Not only do the old recommendations need to stand but newer detection procedures need to be used.

1998 Dx at age 34 with DCIS at baseline mammogram.
2008 Dx at age 44 with Stage 3C through SBE. Still fighting today.
Cancer doesn't deserve to win, and to make these recommendations based on money is just morally criminal.

In memory of another dear BC sister, Mena, founder of the Mojo thread, who was diagnosed in 2004 and passed away this year just after her 48th birthday.

Thanks, Elizabeth. There are many more sisters who, sadly, are no longer with us to post on this thread but whose diagnosis came considerably before they were 50 years old. I don´t remember their exact ages but their struggle should be remembered in reflecting over the consequences of eliminating mammography screening and BSE for women under 50.
To name just a few more who have left us in recent months--
FlaLady, who was 49 when she passed
Amber, who was in her early 30s
Geeta, also in her early 30s
Wendy V, who I think was in her early 40s

It's shocking how many younger women are getting breast cancer.
These recommendations also affect those of us in the over 50 category. My breast cancer was detected 1 year after getting a clean bill of health. No, I don't "enjoy" getting mammograms, but had I waited another year it might have spread farther than the 3 nymph nodes that were already infected.
Instead of cutting back on screening they should be improving methods they have.
And what's the deal about not doing breast self exams? That doesn't cost them anything. It's hard not to be cynical. Do they want less women to reach old age?

pitanga, I thank you too and would like to add a post for LV2CMP, Amy Vinson, who was diagnosed at age 36 and died last month at age 41

Janel Bush- dx Triple Negative 1.5 cm no nodes at 58 found on a mammogram-too small to feel. If I had waited 2 years between mamos as recommended for those over 50 this aggressive type of bc would have been bigger and badder and the prognosis crummier.

Did monthly breast exams and found my lump just 4 months before my 49th birthday. My dear friend found her lump in the shower at age 49 years old and is no longer with us. We both knew immediately that our lumps were breast cancer.....so we were not shocked when given the diagnosis. I am so outraged about this latest news that I will be writing every so called Breast Cancer Advocacy Group that proclaims to be here for women and preventing breast cancer!
Thank you Dr. Weiss for not being one of them!
Love,
Terry

Cinda Donaghy- found my lump by SBE 4 days after my 45th birthday. My mamm from the previous year was clear ( I know because I compared it to the one I had after I found the lump). Had I followed the current recommendations, I'd probably be dead from my grade 3 tumor before I turned 50! We are not disposable.....we need to stand together and be heard.0

I did not get breast cancer until after age 50, but whole-heartedly support getting mammograms early. My cancer was barely detected even with a routine mammogram. I am sure everyone would rather go through one or two unnecessary tests and find out they do not have cancer, than to wait until it is too late and find out they do. I am going to recommend that my daughter begin screenings earlier than age 50.

Dx'd at age 48, IDC, 9mm, ER/PR+ Her2- 0/3 nodes - found the small lump myself - didn't show up on mammogram but OB/GYN insisted on an ultrasound to rule out anything - thank God....if new guidelines would be followed, I'd probably be dx'd with larger tumor and later stage. No family history - have 5 sisters and I'm the only one!!!!!!

Renee Palmieri Dx'd at 39. Didn't find it with mammogram, but you could feel it. Ultrasound proved. If I was never due for mammogram, it wouldn't have been found. To make these careless statements in this day and age is beyond careless. Get rid of the task force.

I am well over the age of 50 and have been having a Mammagram every year, thank God, because that is how mine was found in its early stage. Yes I lost a breast but it was better than the alternative. I have three daughters all under the age of 50. My youngest daughter was diagnosed last year and had a lumpectomy. She is just finishing up her rediation. Until I was diagnosed last year there were no cases of breast cancer in our family. Now there has been two in one year. You never know. Cancer has no regard for age. We can't let these guidelines be changed. It is to important to all women. Mammography is very important and there are other new diagnostic measures which should be added. Let's all let our congressmen know how we feel.
