Barbe:  good comeback.  I'm going to say that to the next Breast Cancer foundation caller on the phone.  I have "paid" the ultimate price already and if they were using the millions of dollars in the right direction, we may have better treatment and heck, maybe a cure for BC by now.

I do have a few I know that like to tell me that "so and so" just died from breast cancer that went to the brain, etc.  Nice - NOT.

I actually did say something like that to a caller raising money for bc research.  He got me at a bad time to asking for money, and I let him have it.  I told him that I had been diagnosed with bc, that I had given both breasts and 4 years of my life to that, and I didn't get one red cent of help from ANYWHERE, let alone the organization that he was saying helped ALL women with bc.  Then I hung up on him.  It was satisfying!

Native, I would have stayed on the line to hear his answer!!! But that's just me and my crooked sense of humour...hehehehehe

Normally I would have stayed on to listen to him stammering and floundering for the giggle factor, but I was sooooooo mad that I was afraid I would say something naughty if I kept the 'conversation' going.  Next time, however, I will stay on for the reaction!

I remember back in the day I used to get solicition calls every day for every service out there.  Thank God for the "Do Not Call" legislation.

For the millionth time I got a call to sign up for a magazine subscription, so sick and tired of them calling on a weekly basis and politely declining, I asked the guy on the other end if they had magazines in braille.  He stammered and sputtered and said no they didn't.  Never got another call from them again LOL!!!  Now I never said I was blind, just asked if that was available.

The fastest I ever got off a solicitation call was from a newspaper here. They started the pitch on how wonderful it would be to have a subscription and I said, "I can't read Hebrew".

Not as much fun as yours, Myleftboob, but just as effective!

I used to get solicitation calls from food companies, you know the ones that want you to buy a side of beef and frozen vegetables at an outrageous price.  When I said I don't have a freezer, they said they do that can be included in cost.  So I said, okay, well, I would love to join your food program, "Do you take foodstamps?"  They hung up on ME!!! LOL.  That was fun

I usually interrupt and ask What is the name of your company? They usually blurt it out and try to keep talking.  I just tell them Thank You, I'll note that because I never buy from phone solicitors, even when I find the same product in the store.  I get very few calls any more.  The only repeat offenders seem to be advertising pen companies and the cheap printer and copier cartridge companies.   They seem to feel free to keep calling because I have a business.

I tell them I'm waiting for a call from my surgeon and is this who is calling? Are you Dr. XXXXX????

I haven't told enough people to get too many dumb comments but the one that really ticked me off was a doctor. He was filling in for my regular surgeon and I was going in to hear the results of my lumpectomy.

I was sitting there after hearing that I would need a re-excision (after already losing most of my breast from two previous surgeries) and he said, "Well, I do hope you realize that you won the breast cancer sweepstakes."

Sweepstakes. Really? Tell that to my brain and my lost breast.

    Annoying Quotes -

" If you ever need anything I know alot about breast cancer. One cousin lived and the other one died"

"Hang in there, you are very strong- there is always someone who has it worse"

"My sister in law had a peaceful passing, I hope the same for you" - This one took the prize!

MLM45: OMG !!!! Are you kidding me??  I wouldn't be speaking to any of the folks that said those quotes.  Another pet peeve quote I hear is "it is what it is" -- what a line of BS.  I found a good article in a weekly supplement to my newspaper that I will post if I can find it again.  It would be good if all friends, family, and doctors could read it.  It lets them know what is NOT cool to say --

My dad had a stranger tell him his horrible story about losing his wife to BC during a conversation where the reason for his looking at real eastate in this area came up (my parents are relocating, long story).  My mom said afterward that it was one of the few times she has seen him cry in 40 years.  Some people just are so insensitive.

Gumshoe, I bet I know who that doctor was :(

If they ever try to send me to him again I will refuse and wait for Dr. Janzen. I've absolutely had my fill of his belittling and condescending attitude!!

kltb04 - That's awful. People can be so unbelievably idiotic.

akmom - You would be right! I won't see him again either. Funny, before I did see him, one of the nurses called me the morning of the appointment to make sure "it would be okay" if I saw him instead. I didn't know any better at the time but I'm guessing she did :)

Was out with some friends for the first time since my diagnosis the other night.  One friend was trying so hard to be nice and obviously didn't really know what to say to me.  He basically ended up saying how great it was that my boyfriend had stuck by me since I'd been diagnosed with cancer.

I know people can be stupid, but these comments are unbelievable.  And for a doctor to made such a comment ought to get him a kick in the family jewels.

Kingjr ... get someone to x-ray your hip.  I have suffered for too long because doctors didn't even try to find out what was wrong.  I thought all my pain in my legs might be peripheral artery disease and while I have some minor blockages it is the stupid hip causing all the pain,  The vascular surgeon explained that PAD would cause pain in the calves - not the hip!  Gosh, do we all have to go to medical school so we can self-diagnose?

Okay, okay, I scored a big one in the "dumbest thing said" contest.

As you know I am a male breast cancer patient. I mentioned my diagnosis to a fellow last week. He seem stunned. I mentioned my children's reactions to the diagnosis and he said "oh, you were able to have children? Are you sure they're yours?" Had he been kidding, I wouldn't have mentioned the comment here. Apparently, he was quite serious.

Yeah, yeah, apparently breast cancer in men also means that you're a eunich Cool

And, yes, my kids are mine.

I've always said that since most modern cancer treatment involves the surgical removal of the offending body part, I kinda prefer having breast cancer over a "more manly" cancer, that's for sure.

I do not miss the "man boobs" nearly as much as I would some of the more functional parts of me. We've taken to calling my diagnosis "tits-on-a-boar cancer."
