Physical aging appearance

Barbe, I thought people knew that generally...dark hair really accentuates wrinkling. That's why a lot of older women go blonde!

But you still see them in Walmart!! With long hair "because tht must make them look young too". They look like witches!!!!
My sister let her hair go all gray and she looked wonderful with her short hair cut. But then she let it grow long and she looks 20 years older and like a hag!

Girls, I just got a tremendous boost of confidence today. I had the follow-up for my latest revision on the reconstruction.
So, while in there and discussing with my PS the plan for dieting to lose the chemo weight and when should we schedule the nipples and any other needed nips and tucks, I said that we should also start thinking about scheduling some work on my face next year as at my age, losing weight might bring sagging skin. He says that I shouldn't worry about that, because women my age still have a lot of elasticity in the skin. I say "Dr. X, you know I will be 50 in four days, right?". He makes an astonished face, opens my chart, looks at it, looks back to me, and says "you know, all this time I thought you were like 38 or so".
Now, that kind of thing coming from a plastic surgeon in my book is one of the best compliments a woman can get. I felt so happy on the way home!

Nice going Day....
Emily, maybe they assumed that Mom was going to pay!

Way to go, Day and what a bummer, Emily! Reminds me of when teenagers first started calling me "ma'am". But don't worry, I think when we are a little further out from chemo, with lots of nourishing lotions and vitamins, that we will start looking younger again. Imagine what the harshness of chemo has done, and thankfully the body sloughs off old, dead cells. Maybe soon, it will get better.
And, I like what Barbe said!

Marybe - I like the beat up old car joke! Now where's the repair shop? And I like your "heck, yes" post! You're absolutely right - I need to remind myself (constantly) that we are lucky to have these treatments even if they are hard on us. Besides, I'm sure none of us look THAT bad! It's just our own skewed perception - everyone else thinks we look great and I need to learn to accept the compliment and BELIEVE it! (and then go home and spend hours super-moisturing every place on my body!)

I had to go renew my driver's license yesterday and my new picture makes me want to cry. I look 20 years older then the last picture, which was taken 8 years ago. Why is it so much worse to see a picture of ourselves than look in the mirror? I've always had dark circles under my eyes, but now they have taken over my face. None of the concealers I have tried work. Does anyone know of a good concealer? I'm good to a Look Good, Feel Better class next week, and I hope they can help.

I look 5 years younger today because I had my post chemo grayish hair colored blonde a few days ago. Before BC I thought about going natural. When I lost my hair during chemo I thought it would be a great time to see what my real hair color was. My hair came in as a pretty silver hair color but I've been feeling down lately. So here I am with blond hair feeling sassy and happy. It's only hair but it it fun. Now if I could just zap those wrinkles and cover up my post chemo pounds!!! This is a great thread!

Leah, Post a pic of your new do. Did you go pro or do it yourself ? I used to do all kinds of things with my hair....would trim it myself, had it every color under the sun, did my own streaking ,"No way, am I going to pay someone to do it when I do a better job myself" Those were the days....now I am lucky if I can even style it.
Am up because today was treatment day and I think they are still giving me steroids in the premeds even though I requested that they stop them.

Leah post a pic would love to see the new hair color. I did not do chemo but decide to let my natural gray come in. I finally got tired of it so I kinda a streaked it with a color that looks like my natural color. I decided to do it myself and save some money. I have too many medical bills I'm paying for. Seems that will never end.

I found that too blonde aged me, so I put in a tint of red which is warmer and (hopefully) youthful.....which I never would have thought of except when I was getting a wig, I tried on a bunch of styles and colors just for the heck of it, and fell in love with one with an auburn tint....I stayed with what was my 'natural' color at the time as I didn't want to start a new look while going through chemo, but once I got my hair back I went with the red and have really enjoyed it.....my new 'natural'.

Hi Ruth:
I also put a tad of copper in my hair

I agree to each their own but I color mine!! (thought about giving it up with cancer dx tho) My hair is naturally dark (very dark) and I've been coloring it to a lighter brown with blonde highlights for about 10 years now. No way would I go back to dark now! Too many grays and I too, just feel it would be too harsh looking. I love the blonde but agree too blonde ages as well. Medium warm brown with blonde highlights...... makes me feel fresh, bright and just goes well with my skin tone I think. Luckily I used to be a cosmetologist so do my own hair. It's expensive to do all this otherwise!
For me, don't think I'll ever let my hair go gray.:)

I have always had dark brown hair (virgin hair, never been colored), and I was convinced that when it came back after chemo, I would have some new gray hair waiting for me! I was pleasantly surprised that it came back the same, dark brown, with no gray. (I did have insane chemo curls, and still do, to some degree, but that's another story!)
There were a few times (pre bc) that I considered changing my hair color, just for fun, but some of my friends advised against it. The thought was that if I haven't colored it thus far, don't start now, because the maintenence is a pain in the ass. So I think I will leave well enough alone

tougherthanithought I'm with you. Have recently thought of coloring my hair, but don't want to deal with the maintenance.
Although I am mostly grey, there is still lots of my natural brown in the underneath layers, so I am thinking of cutting it a lot shorter giving me an instant color change.

Using highlights and lowlights is the way to go to make ANY colour look natural. It's when someone has a one-tone flat hair colour that looks so bad. Red is the most flattering to our graying skin, too!!
I have about an inch of dark left and the rest is about 80% gray. It doesn't look like it in my avatar but it's true. I want to have fun with burgundys and red as streaks when it's all finally gray. I'm lucky that I have "sparkly" gray, more of a silver.

Have some fun and try new and even crazy things with your hair....I mean, what's the worse that could happen?!!
0 -
the worst that could happen?....it could fall out....and not from chemo! When I was in highschool I used to have it streaked and it was sort of a golden color which looked good and I got lots of compliments on....also helped it along with sun in...remember that? Well, I wanted it platinum like some of the other girls had even though my mother told me that looked cheap....I thought it looked 'tuff"...another term that shows my age. Anyway, lst time we colored it (my friends were helping me) it didn't get light enough....we were using Lady Clairol Ultra Blue to strip it and then you used whatever toner to get the desired shade. Even though it said clearly do not repeat within a 24, 48 or some hour time frame, I did it anyway. So I am washing the stuff out of my hair and I look and there my hair is in the sink....didn't fall out everywhere, just right down my part, but I had to be really careful washing it and couldn't comb it when wet because it was the texture of a rotten rubber band. I then had my hair cut short ( very Twiggy, Carnaby Street looking) and had sort of a dark mohawk growing in at at my part which was dark. My desired tuff look suddenly turned to tough. I should have listened to my mother.

Oh my!!!!!

What beautiful words, Marybe! "I should have listened to my mother."
Music to my ears when I hear that occasionally said by one of my kids!
My son had to say "My Mother was right." every performance in a musical he was in.
I asked him once to guess my favorite line in the show.

I was 39 at diagnosis, 40 now post chemo and reconstruction. I have yogurt with flax oil and seeds every morning and have seen a big difference in my skin...I live in an extremely dry climate and no longer have problems with dry, flaky skin and even occasionally even see a sort of "glow" to my skin, all of which I attribute to flax and improved overall nutrition...less alcohol, more whole grains/fruits/veggies.

Re: Aging... I'm thinking of asking my miracle-worker plastic surgeon if there is anything he can do to make me look more "well-rested" when I go in for my exchange. (And I may increase my flax intake too!)

Just some "food" for thought..if you aren't already aware. I was told to avoid flax by my oncologist as it increased estrogen levels. Research on google gives conflicting information about it but just wanted to share that in case you want to check it out.

Sorry I've been away from this thread for a while. Thought I'd drop in.
Webu I too will need to renew my driver's license next February. I haven't had to do it since 2003! Guess we are both good drivers. There's going to be a big difference in age 43 to 51… and I can't blame it all on chemo, chemo-pause and Anastrozole.
Seriously if it weren't for a couple more wrinkles around my mouth I really didn't age much so far. I think what people don't realize is on chemo/steroids you face gets blown-out and hides the wrinkles. Yes I actually looked better on chemo/steroids. It rounded out my long face and filled in the wrinkles.
My eyelashes keep falling out and my eyebrows keep thinning. The brow hairs that are left seem to be getting longer than usual and a little wild. I don't see any replacement hair for either yet. My hair on my head seems to be coming in fine granted still thinner on top but filling in. More gray though but I will fix that. Wish I knew when they would start to grow back. I'm almost 8 weeks from last chemo but this shedding really started about 3 weeks ago.
Marybe I've seen you in person. You look great. I don't remember any skin issues, bubble butt or protruding stomach! I don't know how old you are but I really did think you were a very attractive woman.
Hair color. I too had very dark brown hair. So far I am coming back salt & pepper but I think more pepper. I used to dye my hair a little lighter shade of brown with very little red, more magenta red than warm red. I'm not dying anything till it's long enough to go scarf-less. I'm hoping in another month but it might take 2 months.

I haven't chimed in on this thread since I recommended some great brands of shoes. Since then, the DD and I scored some great shoes by Mephisto, Ziera and Durea, to name a few, at a fraction of what they cost online or in the stores! I want to send a big shout out to Nordstom's Rack and the Eneslow shoe store on Park Ave South in Manhattan! Ladies there is nothing like a comfortable pair of shoes or sandals. And I also have to say if all you can find that is comfortable on your feet is a pair of sneakers.... Then you don't know what you are missing! I abhor sneakers and have yet to find a pair as comfortable as the shoes and sandals that fill my closet!
Regarding hair coloring, I read Anne Kreamer's book, Going Gray, and had an epiphany and never looked back. I met her, as well, and she looks terrific I person. She's also married to Kurt Anderson. Check out her book!!! A

If you can't do flax, try fish. I take about 1,000 units a day, it makes a difference. Plus it's great for the immune system in general.
