sherry- regarding Vit D, I just talked to nurse for my MO and she said mine was 44 in December, so was in normal limits (she said 30-100 is range).  but she also said they like to keep patients at around 50.  Since its been 3 months since I was tested I asked if I can check again and she said it depends on my insurance.  I hope I can.  Didn't someone post before that BC'ers should be around 60?  I am not on any supplements, other than a calcium chew daily which gives me a very small amount.  Please let me know what your MO says is normal so we can compare notes.

saturn...mine says she wants me around 70-80 because of cancer dx. Not all feel that way though. I have however, from researching about it, see that the upper levels seem to be where they like people with cancer to be. So I agree with my dr on this. :)

I use Garden of Life Extra Virgin Coconut Oil 100% Organic. $15.99 16 oz in our local store. Found it online for a little over $7 online at The Vitamin Shoppe. It's the best I've tried. Love it!!!

jacee...at risk of sounding like a total idiot...do you just use it on your skin (like i do when I remember) or eat it as well?

    Thanks:)

You can cook and bake with coconut oil, AND use it on your skin! I haven't baked with it yet, but I have a friend that does and she uses it in muffins and pancakes - specifically. I use it to grease my cast iron griddle for french toast and pancakes. It makes them taste delicious! AND I use it on my body! I do not know if it really helps with firming, but it does help keep things hydrated and that in itself will decrease some of the signs of aging. I love it. I use the Spectrum brand - which to me did not have a scent and I also use the 365 brand (which does smell like delicious coconut) - both from Whole Foods. I love, love, love coconut oil!

Oh, and I use it on my scars and I think it works wonders.

I just use it on my skin and love it! But it is food grade and can be used for cooking, baking, frying, etc. It tastes great.

I know it may sound weird, but I have used it on my skin, and my dog loves the scent.  Now I have to put a dab on my finger and let her have it-- its her special treat!  All I have to say is "coconut oil" and she comes running.  She's a freak, but I love her!

That is TOO funny Saturn!!! I have a cat that I just have to say "brush" to, but coconut oil is just too cute!

    Heidihill-

I have a few patches of hyperpigmentation, and I read recently that rubbing apple cider vinegar  helps those spots. I have not tried it yet, but it was suggested that I use apple cider vinegar in the a.m., lemon juice in the p.m.  I'll give it a try and let you know if it works. I used to use this wonderful product called IS Clinical on my face for uneven pigmentation, but am too scared to use it because it contains Arbutin, a known carcinogen.

Heidihill - for hyperpigmentation - and generally for getting an even and radiant skin tone, do the following (it's a two-step treatment).

Get some organic wheat bran.  Put about 1/2 to 2/3 quart of cold water in a bowl and about 3 tbsp of wheat bran.Leave overnight. In the morning, use a cheesecloth or a gauze to strain the wheat bran (do NOT throw away the water). On a clean skin (soap and water), use 1/2 of the soaked wheat bran as a natural microderm abrasion. Keep rubbing it all over your face, insisting on the nostrils, hyperpigmentation spots, chin right under the lower lip, temples and between the eyebrows. do this for about 5 to 10 minutes, changing the clump of wheat bran as it gets used. Wash your face. Take the remaining wheat bran and divide it in two equal clumps, and shape them like patties. Take a clean fabric (gauze, handkerchief, something that you will use only for this) and soak it in the water the wheat bran has soaked in overnight. Lay down, put the two wheat bran patties over your closed eyes, and cover your face with the soaked cloth, pressing it gently on your face so it adheres well. Stay like this for about 10 minutes. Wash your face real good with luke-warm water, and apply your normal moisturizer (coconut oil works too).

Also, on hyperpigmentation spots you can try pieces of sliced cucumber.

Day - that sounds like it would be great for your skin, I guess your whole body! I've been thinking my complexion looks kind of splotchy and couldn't quite put my finger on why. I think I'll try this and see if it looks more even-toned. When you put the patties on your eyes, is that to reduce puffiness?

To reduce puffiness, wrinkles, and to improve dark circles.

So is it readily absorbed (the coconut oil)?   I mean, is this something I can use in the morning before work when my skin feels dry and tight?  Or would I look like a greaseball and should only use at night?

If you use it on your hair, do you apply to dry or wet hair?

Your skin will readily absorb the oil. If using in the AM, I apply less, as it takes a while to sink in when applied liberally. I do not use it on my hair but I think samesue said she puts it on wet hair.

Good, I am looking forward to trying it - and unlike other "healthy" oils, I like the smell of coconut.   I don't care for the smell of olive oil or almond oil.

Thanks for the tips, Day. I'll try the cucumber. If it doesn't work, I'll try the wheat bran.

Ladies my niece just got back from a yoga and Ayurveda course in Thailand. She showed me how to drybrush my whole body then use either warmed coconut oil or in my case I put the oil on then sat in the sauna at my gym. They say it helps draw toxins out of the body.Adfter I showered my skin felt wonderful and didn't even need a moisturizer. She bought both the drybrush and coconut oil at the Bodyshop store. Not sure if you have them in the U.S.

Interesting idea, mumayan! I just bought one of those brushes, have the coconut oil but no access to a sauna. I'll just have to make do with turning my shower on and letting it get steamy in there. How long did you stay in the sauna?

  • mumito
    mumito Member Posts: 2,007

I do not stay in the sauna too long because I am at risk of developing LE as soon as I get sweaty I getout. But last night I still found that with all the sun exposure I get on my travels I still need to use a good body moisturizer every evening.  If you do not have access to a sauna you are suposed to gently heat up the oil before applying.

And maybe have a naked hunk apply it in a slow, comforting, slidy kind of way....

    barbe1958, you crack me up.

I never thought of using my shower with the cocnut oil, will have to try that. I never thought of the coconut oil as drawing out toxins, but I like the idea.

A couple of weeks ago, I was feeling so aged and depressed about it.  So when I finally saw my hairstylist again (after mostly coloring my dark-ish hair myself since chemo), she brightened me up, and, much to my surprise, I feel like it really softened a lot of the deeper lines (all post bc & HRT) in my face.  Just thought I'd share because I was really starting to have issues about looking so old, but a different shade of hair color and highlights worked wonders!   I'm also really into the coconut oil for my face & body these days.     Deanna
