I am wondering about false eyelashes. I am going on vacation and want to look decent in pics. My eyelashes have hung in pretty well but have thinned quite a bit if that makes sense. They go all the way across just way less hairs. Anyway if I try to supplement will that make the others fall out when I remove fakes? Any tips would be greatt. Thanks to all

Are any of you ladies taking Biotin? I bought some based on a thread I read about, but I am mainly interested in hair growth because I seem to have lost at least 1/3 of the volume of my hair (despite no chemo) and have big patchy spots on my eyebrows. My nutritionist says it might be a trauma, but have not experienced a regrowth period, so I would like to supplement. Any tips, if you use it?

Marianne, I've been taking 5 mg of Biotin for about 6 weeks now. I am mostly taking it to see if my nails improve, since my hair is growing in nicely. My nails, however, were trashed by chemo and they haven't bounced back. It's hard to say if there is an improvement at this point, because you really need to give it time to let the nail/hair grow out.

I've heard it explained that eyelashes have a quick growth/drop off cycle, so it seems like they just come back and then drop off! Because they do. It's not normal for them all to be gone at once, because then they grow together and the drop off together, if you get what I mean. You need to break the cycle somehow to get some growing while others are dropping.

Have we gotten around to discussing lipstick? I must have missed about 15 pages of this thread. Sorry. Anyway, I've been giving lipstick a lot of thought lately. I have a neighbor who is my age and I want to go up to her and say, "Here's a tissue. Get that lipstick off your face!" I want to whip out of my bag one of my lipsticks for her to try on. I can't describe in words what her lipstick is doing to her face. I think, as we get older, we need less makeup. She globs on her makeup that she looks like a Geisha, or a guy in drag, or worse...decades older than she really is! But the lipstick! Either she's got some deep red with loads of gloss over it, or she's got some over the top, creamy, deep red. Either way, it's awful. What I've found lately to look great is, lip stain and a sheer lipstick. Cover Girl and Target's Boots 7 line make beautiful hues of sheer lipsticks. The lipstain, stains the lips, and keeps the color of the sheer lipstick on longer. I also look for luminescent, light foundations. I may not look terrific, but I'm sure no one who is meeting me thinks I look like a train wreck or a Geisha.

I find I like my lipstick best after it wears off a bit in about an hour, then I top it with gloss. I guess I'm doing my own version of a stain. Maybe I should just get a stain! You think? I also read that red lipstick makes yellow teeth look worse. I tend to look better in russet colours, though I've tried them all.

Barbe - Yeah. Go for it! Try a stain. Maybelline and Cover Girl have them. Try a sheer lipstick too! I think glosses are overkill too for our age. A sheer gives you just enough of the glossy look. And I agree with you. Not too many women can wear red lipstick. I'm salt and pepper, mostly pepper, and I can wear a red SHEER lipstick. I can't wear a creamy red. What you said about the teeth and lipstick is true. I think the problem with my neighbor is that the lipstick draws too much attention to her teeth. She looks like The Cheshire Cat when she smiles. And she's such a pretty woman...OY! What does she need all that make up for???!!!

I think if you have reasonable good looking teeths a red lipstick will make your teeth's looks whiter.
I went to Macy's to get some tips on the best way to make false eyebrows, the Makeup girl suggested powder and asked if she could put it on.
Of course she had other suggestions how to improve my make up and put on a really red lipstick which should last for 24 hours and not stain your teeth's. She said that I needed lipstick to make my eyes stand out more. I don't know at this point if I want my eyes to "stand out" since I lack both eye-lashes and eye-brows
Anyway, the lipstick was very expensive and I had a big problem trying to take it off, it did stain my teeths and I ended up looking pretty awful the rest of the day.
A very red lipstick does not look good on me......

I think a slightly shimmery, neutral lip gloss looks good on most people. IMO, red lipstick ages you. I look back at pictures of me from the 90's when red lips were in fashion and I think it looks awful! I guess at the time it was fine but now I'm all about neutral lips.

I feel like I am playing dress-up and look like my mother when I put on red or dark shades of lipstick. I am sure the fact that I don't like dark lipstick is in part due to the fact I grew up with the white lipstick generation and then the slicker which they later called lip gloss and very light beige/pink shades....BonnieBell and Yardley of London. However, I did find a lipstick that I really liked just this past year and do wear it, but only if I am going somewhere that I think calls for a little makeup. It's Channel and the shade is #69 Rough Allure. It was not cheap but I figure it will last me 10 years providing I last that long or don't lose it. Eyeliner was also something I grew up with....that two burnt holes in a blanket look as my mother called it....is something I cannot do without. I do not wear mascara because it always flakes off even if it is supposedly long lasting or waterproof, but I do not like to leave the house without eyeliner and eye shadow. I think a lot of our basic training stays with is forever. I wish I would have listened to my mother more about mositurizing, but believe me I am doing it today. Voraciousreader....I love the descriptions of your neighbor. Be sure you never have too much to drink around this woman, you might just tell her what you really think....unless of course one of you is moving. LOL

Marybe... Speaking of drinks... We were recently together at an affair for a mutual friend. Everyone was dressed to the nines. That was where I first noticed how much lipstick and make up she was wearing. If I didn't say anything then, and believe me, we all were drinking, I would never say anything now.
I remember those Yardley and Mary Quant make ups from the Go,go sixties. My older sister had one of those shimmery lipsticks. I couldn't wait to be old enough to wear it. By the time I was, other colors were in fashion.
Today I stay away from shimmery colors. I think it's more suitable for my daughter to wear. I think I can enjoy more hues and colors if I stick to sheers.
And regarding speaking up. I am a lady and will only speak up when I have something nice to say. I was at the dentist last week and saw this older woman who looked terrific putting on her lipstick as we were making follow up appointments. She had the most magnificent gray hair and she was putting on....red sheer lipstick. I asked her what brand she was using and I also asked her her age. She was a rockin powerhouse of 85! I pray I make it to 85 and look as good as her!0 -
I've read in the past that you should only accent one feature. I tend to use heavy eye makeup (no liner though) so I go softer on the lips and cheeks. I just went to Walmart, but instead of getting a stain, I got a glimmer plumper in a soft coral (doesn't really colour). I'm not noticing the tingling feeling that I used to get with a plumper....hmmmm. Are they making them tingle-ess now??

Barbe. I have found lots of my body parts don't get the sensations they used to....maybe it happens to lips also. LOL.
Voracious, Mary Quant!...that was the name I couldn't think of....Remember Twiggy? And to think we thought she was thin!....compared to models today she really wasn't.....just as the Beatles were actually pretty clean cut looking boys compared to what came later. All relative, isn't it? One positive thing I will say for aging, I think I was very fortunate to have been able to experience the era I grew up in.

Someone mention earlier about their eyebrows. I have noticed in the last couple of years that the hair on my arms have really thined out as well as my eyebrows have become thinner. I started using an eyebrow powder and am happy with the rusults for now. I did not have chemo so mine is totally due to aging (48) but I have not gone through menapause.

For my thinning brows I use an eyeshadow powder and just do a kind of "checkmark" just at the beginning of the brow by my nose. When I try to go further along my brow is looks too heavy.

I have so little eyebrow that I can't find the line to follow with the powder.End up looking like a clown.I always wash it off and give up.0

Marybe- Speaking of Twiggy --- If you REALLY want a BLAST FROM THE PAST....check out the DVD Shakespeare Retold and watch The Taming of The Shrew with the of love of my life, who makes my heart skip beat after beat, Rufus Sewell and the amazing British actress, Shirley Henderson. AND.....Twiggy - whose character plays THE MOTHER of Shirley Henderson's Kate! Twiggy NOW looks terrific!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't rave enough about Shakespeare Retold's Taming of the Shrew episode. The.Best.

I use Burt's Bees lipglosses and lipbalm. They are all natural and I have all the colors which are fairly neutral and look great.

Snobird, my friend swears by all the Burts Bee product line. I might have a look.
Meanwhile, I am reading this terrific book What to Wear for the Rest of Your Life...ageless Secrets of Style. It has some terrific pearls.... Of wisdom!0 -
Someone on another thread suggested 'Frownies' which are apparently a tape you wear at night to diminish the lines on the face. I couldn't find any in town so ordered some on amazon. We will see.....I wonder if it would work to tape a bunch together for the dimples on my thighs. ??

lol:) ruthbru thanks for the giggle. Let me know if that works:)

Ruthbru...
Yeah! Let us know if it works! Now that would be something! Put all of those dermatologists and plastic surgeons out of business!

Ruthbru would love to know if that works. LOL

Do those frownies look sort of like wings? My mother used to stick those things on her face and I think they were supposed to pull apart the frown lines....actually they are still in the dresser that she always used. Ok, because of all the Vitamin D discussion I asked to have mine checked last week when they were drawing blood for my CA27/29 and other tests. I was so stunned when I got the CA 27/29 report (not good) I forgot to ask about the Vit D, but I did when I was at the onco's today....mine was 68 and I think that is good since the other hygienist said when I told her Good Grief, mine is only half that and I am taking such and such mg of Vit D daily..can't recall what she said she took, but I know she is taking the correct kind since she is sort of a health nut and always researching things like that. I don't take Vit D, or any vitamins for that matter. So is this a good number or not....in looking back at some older posts, I am thinking maybe it is too high.

I think 68 is really good as most people struggle to get in to the 40-50 range. I believe frownies are tape like your mother had. I ordered them & they are not here yet. Yes, good grief, I am turning into my (or your) mother. Next thing you know I'll be wrapping my hair in toilet paper to keep the 'set' for a week!

Ruth, You have turned into your mother and, alas, I have turned into my grandmother and am obsessed with my bowels just as she used to be.

Marybe you just made all of my frownies smile.

Hi gals, I had bloodwork done this week and my vitamin D is at 92. The doctor said that is almost too high (but I am happy it is there and plan to keep it there). I was taking 2000iu/day and he told me to back off to 1000.
MaryBe, you crack me up!
