Last night, I finished reading the book, "What to Wear for the Rest of Your Life."  Would you believe, at the end of the book, SHE INCLUDED A READING LIST OF BOOKS??!!  Now, THAT'S my kind of woman!  Anyway, I was sooooo impressed with the selection of books she mentions, having already read some of them!  Furthermore, I realize now, since she read all of the other books, how enlightening her book is.  There was only one little chapter in the book that I think was slightly weak and that was the chapter on shoes.  Although she does mention that when we reach a certain age...our feet begin to hurt and while some of us could use orthotics...others need "good" shoes.  I think she could have gone on to discuss other brands that I think are way more comfortable for us.  My first post on this thread was about shoes and I really think that if you want to feel good, you have to start with your feet.  No matter how much stuff you smear on your face, or finding the best bargain at TJ Maxx, is NOT going to make you look good if your feet are hurting.

Reading this book, everyone will find something to love.  She quotes cancer survivors, divorcees and widows, as well as celebrities, about how they feel about their appearance and WHAT THEY DO ABOUT IT!  Now that I've finished reading it, the next time I go shopping....I'm armed and dangerous with her pearls of wisdom!  Kiss

Marybe - I think I better get a copy of the book for my Geisha neighbor and leave it anonymously at her door stepWink !  The chapter on make up was spot on!  The older we get...less is more.  She mentions we should be looking for sheer and luminescent stuff.  Those are the words we should remember when we set foot at the beauty counter!
  • Clinique used to make a foundation that I loved....it was really sheer, covered up little spots, but did not accentuate lines and wrinkles and also did not feel heavy.  That is my complaint with so many moisturizers and foundations, the are just so heavy.  Well, as is the usual case, they quit making the foundation....just like they have discontinued every eye liner I liked...one there was a multicolored one by Lancome, then I liked this slivergray one that I forget who made,  Este, maybe ?,,,,anyway, anything I like has the  kiss of death and I should learn to stock up if I find one I really  like.   I am going to add What to Wear for the Rest of Your Life to my reading list.

Marybe -- Trust me!  She says EXACTLY what you are saying!  She even explains how to cover up dark spots on our faces without it being too heavy.  Just the chapter on make up alone has a gold mine of info!!!

Marybe - speaking of eye liners.  I use Prestige brand, retractable eye liner.  You get it at Rite Aid or CVS or online.  I don't wear mascara because I get blepharitis.  Yeah, I know.  What's that?  It's an allergy of the eye lashes and the folicles...  I just put a little of the Prestige eye liner on and that seems to make my eyes pop.  No more mascara for me!

I was told not to do saunas after my SNB.  Do you all have different info on that??  Man, would I love a steam room!!!!!

I use the sauna after every workout at the gym just don't stay in too long. But so far I have not develped LE

  • No need to explain....I know all about that condition because I have it and the opthalmalogist told me actually it is quite commom, but mine is much better....I take 50 mg of doxyclcline twice a day and use an ointment at night called, I forget what, ciloxin I think?....and the ointment is what really helps....and I am sure it would help more IF I would remember to use it every night and also if I would stop losing the little tube.  I always did  hate mascara even before I had eye problems.....even the waterproof stuff would flake off on me.  I will check out that brand of eyeliner.  I am having cataract surgery in April so might not need glasses after that and am not sure it that will be a good thing or not....glasses are great for hiding dark circles under the eyes.

Marybe -- I used to use Johnsons Baby Shampoo...on my lashes and eyebrows.  The doctor told me to wash with it...especially during allergy season.  It really worked!  He said that the allergins get attracted to the eye brows, so gently washing them helped.

The "frownies" you guys are talking about...are these the 2 lines I'm seeing between my eyebrows but slightly higher on my forehead? If so, I apparently have them too. They sort of look like quotation marks! Recently both of my kids pointed out that it looked like I was angry at something when in fact I was perfectly calm! Not good! I may have to try this tape you ladies are talking about!

    Sherrill

  • How are the frownies working?   I went to Clinique this week to have a complimentary consult so I could get my free sample of moisture surge and the woman put the tinted moisturizer on me and I liked it so bought some.....it covers up flaws, but is light enough that is doesn't accentuate lines or wrinkles.  Today I am going to the Clinique counter at another dept store for my free gift that I get by buying something so I will buy my All about Eyes cream to get that.  And then Channel is offering this free sample kit of four colored glosses if you go to their counter for a consult.  If they are sheer enough, I might just like them.  Oh and get this....the woman at Clinique was quite the sales person...she says to me, you certainly don't have wrinkles and I said you have got to be kidding!  I have not been able to find my Pantene Silver Expressions shampoo where I normally buy it so certainly hope they have not discontiued it....Jeeze, the story of my life.  I am going to try out the eyeliner you like from CVS, Voracious.

Marybe - when I have a hard time finding my favorite things, I can usually find them at drugstore.com. They have free shipping over a certain level (I think it's like $40).

Has anyone tried RapidLash? I just bought some - figured I would see if it would make my lashes long and curly! We shall see.....I'll let you ladies know if I can tell any difference. I think they said it takes about 3 weeks.

The frownies just came in this week. I have only used them three nights (on that line between the eyebrows). I will let you know, but am skeptical about what results I'll get. They are like little pieces of masking tape, you smooth out the wrinkle and stick the frownie over the spot for the night.

    Marybe...

CVS doesn't carry the Prestige line of make up. I get it at Rite Aid.

Regarding the Pantine shampoo, I think they might have discontinued it. I use it too. I am salt and pepper, mostly pepper, but I need that shampoo to make my gray shine. I bought Pantene Ice Shine shampoo the other day. I just started using Neutrogena Shampoo anti residue formula. It comes in a pump. Occasionally I use Clariol Happy Shine. I don't like the Clariol Shimmer.

I also go online to order stuff. I've bought from drugstore.com among sites.

Ladies, good tip.......................Read it, and tried it................Shampoo your hair first with conditioner,,,,,,,follow that with whatever shampoo you use...............then condition again..............trust me it works.............something about taming the hair before you wash it..............I was surprised, but it helped me, and I can use all the help I can get.

I've tried the conditioner/shampoo/conditioner.  It made the shampoo difficult to lather and so by the time I was done, I wondered if it had left any result from the pre-conditioning.  Recently, I have been using regular conditioner as a leave it.  It works wonderfully and made me think that the leave-in is just a gimmick to get us to buy more products.

I have very fine straight hair. Too much conditioner weighs down my hair. This Neutrogena anti residue shampoo is gentle and really gets all the nasty stuff off of the hair.

I use the Neutrogena anti-residue Shampoo and love it.

I guess I was lucky that the conditioner/shampoo/conditioner worked for me...Maybe it depends on the conditioner you use..........Everything I have is from QVC.......Not cheap, but very good, although I'm the only one using it, so it lasts a long time......well worth the money

  • I went to the store I always got the Pantene Silver Effects at and could not find it so I got this nice woman to help me and she knew exactly where it used to be and then decided it must have been one of their discontinued products....I asked Just in your store or has it been really discontinued? and she said she wasn't sure.  Then she said Oh wait. let me look where we have the discontinued items on sale......no luck with the shampoo, but they had about 6 bottles of the silver effect conditioner, but I don't use conditioner and never have.  So then I went to Wallgreen's and no luck there either.  I came home and googled it and found several places selling it, but for $58 a bottle!!  and then they also had these little packets of the shampoo for sale in groups of 4 or 10, different amounts and they were not exactly cheap either. I don't know if they were single use or if you could get several washes out of one packet.   Also they were selling the conditioner....do you use the conditioner, Voracious?....if so I will go buy what they have left and sell it to you for $15 a bottle....just kidding....it's half price so only $2, but they are selling that on the internet for some rididulous price.   It NEVER FAILS....I like something and it goes off the market.  I am going to ask my hairdresser if she can find something for me.  Oh, the eyeliner....I found a nice one that Channel makes, not really silver, but a gray and not as dark as slate and then they told me to go to another dept store and look at the Urban Decay counter...how's that for a name?...gotta be a healthy product with a name like that.  So I did and I found a nice silver one so all in all it was a good day, but I am still bummed about my shampoo.  Oh, and I bought the cutest top for summer on sale that reminds me of fabric they used to use when I was young...it's got a peplam waist and will be really cute with capris and it is SLEEVELESS......I quit wearing things that did not have sleeves a long time ago because I thought I had fat arms(my mother always complained about her arms and this carried over).....then they got really bad in the past few years and it's not so much fat as it is old wrinkled flabbyskin that just sort of hangs there, but I decided to heck with it, I like the top and I am going to get it.  I thought this is ridiculous, there are plenty of people running around half naked showing unattractive body parts and obviously not giving a hoot what anyone thinks and I like this blouse and am going to get it and who is going to be noticing my arms except for me.  Maybe I will go totally wild and buy myself one of those simple little black sleeveless sheath dresses that every women needs to have in her wardrobe.  Then again, I may end up returning the blouse.

PS When I was checking out the cashier who was a young girl asked Is that all you are getting....I got a pack of mints....and I said well they discontinued the shampoo I wanted for gray hair that I always got here and she said I wonder why? and I said well, I guess they don't have enough customers with gray hair and she says with this real deadpan face, I like you.  You're funny. and that made me smile all the way to the car because I was being dead serious when I said it.

Final rinse for your hair should be cool or even cold water if you have any fly away, frizzie problems. It flattens the little scales that make up the outer surface of your hair. Makes your hair shinier and easier to comb too.   I was a hair dresser many years ago and a cold rinse is far easier to do in a shampoo bowl than in your shower!

Jhirmack makes a product for gray hair that some folks swear by.

     http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=177472&aid=337953&aparam=jhirmack_shampoo_silver&CAWELAID=127446232

I haven't tried it yet.  Anyone care to chime in??

Gingerbrew - Thanks for the tip about rinsing with cool or cold water.  I do that already.  I was told by the dermatologist not to take long or hot/warm showers.  Believe it or not...my skin is sensitive to the hot water.  I get out of the shower and ITCH if it's too warm.  The dermatologist told me to take as many showers a day as I like, as long as they are SHORT and with cool or cold water.  Helps.  But takes getting used to....

Voracious Thanks for the Jhirmack tip.  I used to use their regular shampoo, but it's been off the market for years and years.  My aunt is always telling me to use special shampoo for grey hair and I think that's the one.  I haven't noticed any Jhirmack shampoo lately.  My husband like to economize, so he brings home hotel shampoo...I buy my own :>)

Marybe You are too funny.  You remind me of a friend I have at work (by looks), but her sense of humor is very similar, so I can actually hear you saying everything you write with my friends voice.  It's a good thing!!

Went to my local CVS and found the Jhirmack for silver. I live on Cape Cod and there is a very large elderly population here. I'm not one of them naturally, but perhaps that's why I was able to find it!!  Can't wait to use it.

  • OK, here is my opinion...I just tried the Jhirmack silver this morning and I do not like it as well as the Pantene . Both shampoos are purple and I know that is some ingredient that makes the hair not look brassy, but with the Pantene, I found my hair to have more shine and with this other, it looks more gray and not as silvery if that makes any sense.  The Jhirmack shampoo itself looks more like pudding, whereas the Pantene was more clear.  You can tell I am quite obsessed with this whole deal, but it really pisses me off when I find a product I like and they discontinue it and it is getting so this is the story of my life.  At least I smartened up last time when I bought bras and bought half a dozen of them since bra shopping is always a major ordeal, trying something that fits my one natural old saggy breast as well as my implant.  Back to the shampoo, I forgot that the gal at the front desk's husband works for P&G and has been with the Pantene and hair products division for years so I told her and she said that for sure if they discontinue a problem that means they are coming out with a replacement.  He's in Saudi Arabia right now, but will be back on Thurs so she is going to ask him about it and she told me to bring my old bottle in so she can take it home with her.

Nancy,  I really like All About Eyes by Clinique....it gets rid of circles (supposedly) and puffiness and I like the way it feels.

Thanks Nancy !  "White out" eyes, I love it, I could pull out a picture or two, but I won't Laughing

Very concerned right now with regrowth and green with envy at all of you who are using shampoos !!!!!
