I have very, very dark circles, but learned from "What Not to Wear's" make up lady whatever her name is, to just use foundation or powder that I use for the rest of my face. It certainly keeps me from having that white-out look!! And it's more subtle, not as "made-up" if that makes sense. I've had people in the past ask if I have black eyes! Surprised
  • I got a reply back from the email I sent to Panteen and they actually sent me a recommendation to try another product...Clairol's Shimmer Lights.  I thought Wow, that is certainly very big of them suggesting a competor's product, then I looked on the back of a bottle of it and it says it's a division of and distributed by Procter & Gamble and Barbe, made in Canada!!  I have pics from way back when where most all of the gals had those eyes that looked like they were centered in a white background.

Marybe - I just threw out a bottle of the Clariol Shimmer Lights.  I don't like it at all.  I've bought it twice.  The Clariol Shimmer Lights smells awful and makes my hair way to dry.  They also have a combo, shampoo/conditioner, but that weighs down my hair.  I agree 100% with you about what you said about the Pantene.  I thought that it made my black hair shine brighter and it didn't yellow my gray.  My gray had a nice contrasting pure white.

So, I tried the Jhirmack "New and Improved" Silver Plus shampoo last night.  Eh.  :(      It makes my black hair dull.   So far, from all the products on the market to choose from,  I think the Pantene Ice Shine is best.  It really makes the hair sparkle.

A few weeks ago, I bought a separate "gloss" for gray hair to shine that you put on wet or dry hair.  It definitely made my gray hair shine...but I can't imagine how good it would be on a full head of gray hair.  I also don't like putting too much stuff on my hair because, if it isn't fly away, then it's flat from too much build up.  That's where that Neutrogena anti-residue shampoo comes into the mix.

Oy.  Time to throw all those hair products onto the Bonfire of the Goddesses's thread fire!

I also like John Frieda's Clear Shine Glaze.

But that is also impossible to find.  I worry that they'll discontinue that too!  Yikes!

Nothing is making me look as old as my Ogilvie Home Perm Kit chemo curl.  I'm being treated like someone about to board the senior bus.  I can't wait for it to grow out more, it is impossible to style and makes me look horrible.  I have a trim scheduled, not hopeful.

I now understand why people complain about curly hair....

In other news, now that the photos are in post-chemo, it's my eyes.  I have bags under them in a way I never did before.  I'm seriously considering a little "tuck", as I know that's really the only way to truly manage it.  "Considering" should be qualified, perhaps fantasizing is more like it.  I'm still paying off the medical debt...

I don't wear much foundation any more but I have a liquid concealer from Clinique which works well under the eyes and on sun spots then cover over with a tinted powder.Seems to work well with out the whiteout look. The powder also holds up better durring hotflashes.Yell

Decided for my daughters wedding in June I am going to have my makeup done by a pro along with the wedding party.Do you think I will look 10 years younger.HE HE HE

  • mum, I think it is great fun to have a makeover done, but usually I am either unable to duplicate the look or don't want to..but they are really good about blending and shading and covering up defects. Voracious, Thanks for the tip....I will just take the Clairol Shimmering Lights I picked up on the way to work this AM back.  Lto.....the curls won't last.  I guess I was very fortunate in that I did not get curls, but I did have waves and never even had those before, but now it's back to poker straight. If I could afford a cosmetic procedure it would be my neck.

I just had to smile....isn't it nice that we can feel good enough to gripe about this stuff and aren't complaining about not being able to hold food down, and not being able to get up without pain in the morning.

Is anyone else shocked at the number of skin care lines that tout themselves as "natural" that contain so many toxic ingredients?    Aveeno, Alba hawaiin, kiss my face, etc....   they throw a few natural ingredients in it and claim to be "natural".

I have been on cosmeticdatabase.com a lot and am pleased with the number of TRULY natural lines out there, many that are affordable.

My natural hair has enough curl that all I did for decades was to wash it and scrunch it up and go. Occasionally if the air was very dry I would use some product to encourage the curl. Now it is so curly I will have to use product just to get something presentable. If I am reading everyone correctly the extreme curls will go away after awhile.

Color, I am only slightly interested in returning to coloring my hair. It is a very bright white naturally and I had added some blond for decades only stopping about 18 months ago. I know having all white hair ages me and the blond color is actually more natural looking on me. Still I dislike the idea of having to return to a schedule of color upkeep. My Grandmother had exactly the same hair color as I do and she never colored it until she was 70 and tried red briefly. What a surprise that was!

My nails are still falling off five months after chemo ended. This I would like to change!

Mumayam...If you have a few extra dollars, I would highly recommend that you and your daughter have the make up artist do a test run BEFORE your daughter's wedding.  And, take pictures and see how it looks.  I always hear this BS that you want the make up done a little "heavier" so it will look good in pictures.  But you can't have it both ways.  So, I suggest that you get your make up done a week or two before hand and take pictures and see if you like how you look in person and in pictures. Ditto for the hair!  Very, very important!

Good luck and congratulations on your daughter's upcoming wedding!

I can't give the book enough accolades.

Mum, VR beat me to it!! In fact, they should do the first make-up FREE. You don't want a nasty surprise on the wedding day itself...coming out looking like a hooker or a grandma!??!?! Surprised You should TIP on the free day, though, out of respect. I bet they expected you to ask about a dry run.

I LOVE Anne Kreamer! When I looked a couple months ago, there was a link to a website about growing gray and they have before and after shots. IMHO, only ONE of the ladies looked worse! I love those odds. I got my hair cut last week and now the last of the reddish hue is gone. It's just all salt-and-pepper now. Dark in the back still though. Dumb. I'm lucky enough to have SILVER and know the difference from just gray. This will be fun! Short spikey punky hair with silver highlights (naturally), pretty make-up and jewelry and I'm good to go! I'll look into new glasses now too.....

Barbe...I met Anne Kreamer!  When she wrote the book she appeared at the local Barnes and Noble.  She was as beautiful in person as she appears in the book.  And she's SOOO smart too!  She's also married to Kurt Anderson.  He was in the audience and looked at her so lovingly and proud!

Good luck to you going gray!  You'll find great glasses up in Toronto.  The last time I was there, visiting family, I was admiring EVERYONE's glasses!  So envious!

Thanks for the advice will definetely look into the dry run first.I never thought about that.

  • Ginger, I would love it if my hair was actually white in color....strived for that look when I was in highschool and that was the time I over processed it with Lady Clairol Ultra Blue stripper and it fell out!!  You will have to post a pic of yourself.

Barbe, I love glasses, but am absolutely overwhelmed when it comes to selection.  Unfortunately they are very expensive, but I always do the 3 months same as cash and finance the balance left after ins so I have mutiple pairs.  The problem now is that the distance RX in them in no good since I have cataracts and I do not even need them for distance.  When they told me I might not even need glasses after my upcoming surgery I said, But I like wearing glasses....all I have to do now is decide if I want the lens they put in to be for distance or close up and I think I will opt for close and then just have clear in the top of the lens so I can wear them all the time if I want to. I tried contacts but sticking my finger in my eye just freaked me out.

Ok, you have convinced me, I am going to get the book Going Gray.  I am just killing time now drinking liquids until it is time to go back for my bone scan...got the injection at 7:45 this morning.

My face looks nekkid without glasses now. But I've only been wearing them full time for about 2 1/2 years. At first I hated them, but found they finish off my face.

Just a quick comment regarding finding hair care products to replace favorite ones that are no longer available...  Have you tried a beauty supply store?   I've often gotten excellent advice and products at those.  The people who work there (at least in this area) are usually trained stylists, and they can help you find a product to do what you're after.  And my experience has been that buying salon quality hair color this way is no more expensive than what's in drugstores, and often cheaper.  I haven't looked for a gray enhancer, but I've had really good results with other colors.    Deanna

Good idea dlb823...that is the only place I buy my supplies...........and they are usually cheaper.

DLB832... Great suggestion regarding a beauty supply store.  Unfortunately, I've been there and done that too!  We have a local place that I buy the oil for my husband and son's beard trimmer, so I've checked out their products.  They sell the same stuff for gray hair and the generic versions as well.  But no such luck finding the Pantene.  They're also pretty good for hair coloring.  But for us gals who like our hair au natural...oh, well.....

You probably won't find Pantene in a Beauty Supply store............they mostly carry Salon products, and generic's as you said, but I'm shocked they can't recommend something for gray hair..........I have a friend who uses lemon juice.......she has gorgeous hair.

I have looked over their products....and the space for the gray hair products is tiny.

I was hoping that they might have had a generic equivalent for the Pantene....

  • What, no beauty tips for today?  I am going to ask the gal who cuts my hair about shampoos for gray...she was actually the one who told me about Pantene to start with.  I went to Clinique again yesterday after my bone scan since another dept store was giving freebies....I really like the tinted moisturizer and find I don't need any concealer or anything else is I use it sparingly on top of another moisturizer....yesterday they were giving out a sample of moisture surge and it seems nice and light just like the All aout Eyes.  I like things that don't make me feel like I have a mask on.   Am I the only one who remembers the boxes of toner they used to have for women with gray hair?....this was probably back in the late 60's, early 70's, when I was really messing around with streaks and bleaching and trying different shades on my hair.  I think they used to have section all their own on the top shelf.

Oh, PS.....thanks for the good wishes on my scan.  I will go to the hospital and get a written report tonight.  I have had this same guy do my scan for years now, but he never remembers me and this sort of bugs me.  I know they see tons of people every day, but after awhile you would think they would know who you are at least....I have been going for these at least twice a year, sometimes more for over 12 yrs now.   I am happy to say he was not the one who stuck me yesterday since one time he did it three times before he finally went to get someone at IV therapy...yesterday I had a woman who got a vein the very lst time.....Yipeee.

The only other beauty tip that I have up my sleeve has to do with my comfortable shoes!Kiss

Last week, I brought my dear friend to my orthotic shoe store for new sneakers.  She was schlepping around for months with aching feet.  She found out her left foot was a size 8 while her right foot was a size 7!  This morning, while taking our morning walk, I noticed she had yet another new pair of sneakers.  After her feet started feeling better in the pair we bought last week, she ran back to the store and bought another pair in black!  She calls them her "dress shoes."  LOL!   Anyway, her closet full of 7 shoes are now burning in Jo's Bonfire of the Goddesses.  Looks like she's going to be heading back to that store for quite some time to come!

Tip for the day....Have you had your feet sized lately?  As we get older...our feet flatten out and grow bigger.  If you were a size 7 five years ago, chances are, you are now no longer a size 7!
