Made butter cookies today (my grandmother's recipe). I made a double batch, shouldn't have. I am exhausted, first time in 20 years that I did it. My DD helped, but she got tired of it. I think the part that makes it hard is you have to use a cookie press. Tomorrow maybe toll house cookies. They will seem so easy compared to the butter cookies. Just having a veggie burger and salad for dinner. I can't handle any more cooking today.

Michelle- Thats a funny story about the GPS, which proves our point! LOL!

Joyce- Have fun decorating your house! Your dinner sounds good too.

Kay- I made butter cookies a long time ago and the ones i made were time comsuming too. Are you a vegetarian? I ask because my parents became vegetarians when i was about 12 yrs old , my brother and i would sneak to mcdonalds and get a burger every once in awhile LOL! After my mom passed away and my dad got remarried i cook a lot of vegetarian for him when they come to visit and now i love all the stuff i cook also a tofu dish my dad asked me to make all the time, its a tofu dish, most people dont like tofu but it takes on what ever flavor you cook with it, you just have to make it with stuff you like. Here is one i make for my dad, thought i would share,

    Herbed Tofu cakes

1  16 oz pkg of firm tofu ( fresh bean curd) drained- 1 large carrot peeled, and finely shredded, (about 2/3 cup) - 2 green onions chopped,- 1/4 cup of fresh chopped cilantro- 2 tablespoons of fresh chopped mint- 2 cloves of garlic minced- 1/3 cup of flower- 2 tablespoons of reduced sodium soy sauce- 3 tablespoons of canola oil- For topping- 1/2 cup each of peeled and seeded mango chopped, and cucumber chopped.

Preheat oven to 200%  In large bowl mash tofu with fork, add onions, carrots, cilantro, mint, garlic and flour, and 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, stir all together to combine. in large skillet heat the canola oil over med heat. If you dont have ring molds you can use a 1/4 measuring cup and pack tightly, then to unmold, lightly tap bottom of cup to loosen and put in hot skillet, or you can mold them with your hands, depending on how pretty you want them to look.cook for 3-5 minutes per side or until heated through. remove onto baking sheet and keep warm in oven while you make the rest. then top with the cucmber and mango and snipped mint, I make a dipping sauce for these which is really good- 4 tablespoons of soysauce, 2 tablespoons of rice wine vinegar, and 1 tsp of chili garlic sauce. ( I always double the sauce recipe)

You all sound so good! And you crack me up.  I went bizzerk oh where is spell check and had huge chunks of swiss cheese. OJ, mudpie ice cream and ginger ale. I think that's it.  I know all bad. Oh and a snickers bar and coffee. I was hungry and studying all day for 2 job interviews so I deserved it.

    You won't need the recipes

Debbie Did you know you can get a veggie burger for your parents at Burger King but not McDonalds?  Probably not healthy though. I'm vegetarian your soy sounds good! I eat soy, not a lot, but you're right it picks up the flavor of anything.

Bedo- Oh wow, no I didn't know that , i will have to tell my dad, he ususally makes his own because of all the sodium thats in the processed ones, but in a jiff they are good, I will have to try them though. I dont eat much soy either or least i try not to but it seems like its in so much stuff.Your dinner sounds good LOL!

I have a million cookies left to make and not a lot of energy.  about those butter cookies..

the press is tiring and the decorating takes a long time. They are just as yummy and impressive if you color the doughs (white, red and green for me).. roll them into tubes.  .. put them together in a big 1 and 1/2inch wide rolls.. and cut it into cookie slices.  i then flatten them like peanut butter cookies with a criss cross fork.  They hold the decorations, can be made 40 to a pan and whip out like lightening.    you know. .. you do what you have to do.

My party was a bit tiring last nite. I had gotten up at 4 that morning to volunteer at a wrestling tournament.  Wrestling is absolutely the grossest sport.. all that grappling. Ick.  unfortunately, son #2 is the super champ of the universe .. he is freshman and can pin the senior heavy weights.  I need to support him in this because it gives him incentive to keep his grades above failling.  I about puked tho when i saw all those near naked skinny boys groping at each other and twisting their arms about.  like frogs writhing in mire.    I guess I am going to have my husband go to the meets.  My son is properly squeezable and nicely chubby... not worried in the least about moving up a weight class... "mom - remember, i am a strong as an ox and smart as a fox".... i have always told him this.

the horsdooveers were pretty ok.. lots of cream cheese, and lots of farts this morning... just a little wine and pumpkin cake masquerading as povatica.. plus I was not in the best of moods because i ran into this mother volunteer from hell that morning at the high school .. She just started running around starting arguments with everyone trying to establish her dominance.  She came up to me and said WE DO NOT NOT NOT WASH THE FRUIT... !!!! and repeated it for good measure.   I actually said.. "My... aren't we the pugnacious ignoramus this morning".. She didn't mess with me any more during the morning, but seeing her yell at everyone else was a bit disheartening.. I think her hubby is a coach.. I wonder what her dinner table is like.  Sigh.. we could have gotten along just fine because she directs a choir and we could have had a lot to talk about.

I used to be the big chefola (and never let people know that) but had spent a fair amount of time trouble shooting electrical issues.. I figured out that one plug couldn't supply adequate voltage for the six heaters, coffee maker and crock pots (what a way to cook).  So I am telling the cafeteria manageer this info and she took off and ran with that... WE DON'T WANT THESE ISSUES NEXT TIME... ETC ETC. ETC.. yelling at whomever.

Apple who is so grateful that our family members really enjoy each other's company. Our kids are awesome. funny, kind and and did i say funny?  and pretty much get along all the time.    I miss them when they are gone.

and btw Debbie196... my secret indulgence is a McDonald's dollar doubleburger - no cheese.  I just love them.. for a buck!

Hi Ladies.................not sure what kind of a press your using, but I find the "butter cookies" t;he easiest ones to make....................I have a press that you just fill, and it has a handle on it, and you crank it one right after the other...........everytime you do , and cookie comes right out on the the cookie sheet.

Now if your using the one you have to turn with the know..............oh my God, that one is awful, and yes I can understand how you would get tired...........................I love my cookie press, and would not part with it...............doing cookies next Saturday with m;y daughter and grandaughter..................I did it for many, many, years, and the first 5 batches were for my 6 kids, and then I put the "kabash" on them eating the rest......................................they were for company, but of course they ate those too.

Now they are are all grown....................I miss those days, they were the busiest, but at least I had something to occupy me...................never had time to think.......like now................oh well....time does move on doesn't it........................hugs girls

sorry ladies, that was an error...........................................I meant if you have a cookie press with a "knob", that you turn...........................good Lord, get it right for heavens sake..........................I type faster then I think.....................

I keep dense, whole-grain bread with seeds and stuff on hand. I make grilled cheese with that, cooked in olive oil. Then I mash an avocado with a little salt and lime or lemon and pile it on top of the crispy cheese sandwich. It is perfect comfort food.

Hi momine. Are you new here? Welcome.

Ducky, when I used to make the butter cookies with my mother as a kid, we had one of those cookie presses with a knob that you turn. I borrowed this cookie press from my sister. I think it is like yours. You crank it one after the other. When I said how hard it was, my sister commented how much easier it was than the one my mother used to have with the knob. A lot of times, the cookie got stuck to the press and I had to put it back in the batter. Probably more a problem with the baker than the cookie press. Today I made one batch of toll house cookies and they were easy peasey compared to the butter cookies. I should have made a double batch of them and a single batch of the butter cookies. There were ten cups of flour in the butter cookies, we have a lot of them, but I am giving a lot away. Thanks for the tip Apple. If it weren't for the constant refilling and pressing them out, it would have been much easier. But I think the kids enjoy the shapes, so at least that makes it worthwhile. But I like your idea with the colors.

Debbie, thanks for the recipe. I am not a vegetarian, but I am trying to get at least a couple of diners a week without meat. I don't think I ever tried tofu, I am trying to limit soy too, but once in a while is okay. I am going to give them a try. I found I really like some of the veggie burgers, especially like the spicy Asian or chipotle or some of the spicy flavors (which mostly have soy, but I found some with quinoa instead). I am sure they would be better (and I can do without the sodium too) though if I made them myself. Can't wait to try.

Having salmon for dinner tonight and flounder for my son and daughter. And plenty of cookies for dessert.

Kay..........oh I too have had to take a cookie or 5 off the sheet because it came out of the press "goofy", or did not come out at all.................trust me I'm no expert...............I worked for a school district in Delaware county for 8 years...............I did the baking for 8 schools and the administrative office..........we did everything from scratch back then..........today its open a can of fruit, or a box of cookies that come in by the dozens ................we did it all, cakes, pies, puddings, cookies everything from scratch......we got all our supplies from the government, so it was cheaper to do it that way.

I retired after 8 years of that, and went to work in the marketing research dept. of a major Pharma. Co. in Philly.............stayed there for 15 years, and then took care of my daughters son while she continued to work for the same Pharma company...............I took care of him for 2 years, and then his sister was born, and took care of the 2 of them till just a short time ago................both in school all day, and their father is home when they come in, so no need for me to get them off the bus anymore.................that is why I am so frigging bored now...................

Another daughter says "volunteer"...........I said, "no thanks"................the only job I would do would be feeding the babies in the nursery at a NICU, but,  CHOP, is too far away.............my grandaughter works the NICU there, and says they can use a lot of help feeding the sick babies........................just not going to go all the the way to Philly to do it.............getting too old for that..............76, and counting.........

Have a great day Kay , and don't eat too many cookies............................oh they are tempting...............I will probably put back on the 10 lbs I lost at WW once I start making cookies..................hugs.

Momine- welcome and yum!  I worked at a restaurant years ago that served that and it was called a California grilled cheese and I loved it.

Last nights party was fun, had some wine, chatted with friends and ate yummy snacks.  We came back to our house with another couple and stayed up until almost one laughing.  We get to do it again next Saturday, you have to love the holiday season, gives us an excuse to go out!

I just put a roast in the oven I'll make mashed potatoes and squash to go with it.  My DH and I stacked cord wood for a few hours while the boys napped- I am pooped.

    Laurie08 Member Posts: 2,047

I should add- the cord wood goes along with everyone talking about their husbands not listening.  He's a grasshopper- I am an ant.

Debbie- good for you for knowing what to do!!!

Ducky, I didn't know CHOP needed volunteers to feed babies in NICU. I am going to call about that. I can hop on and off the train easily. I might be going back to my old job though, that would be a problem. I do love cookies, but I've lost 25 lbs since March, and want to keep them off. For some strange reason, it is easier for me lately to be good. I can have a small dessert without having to have a second. Maybe because I am so pleased with the weight loss. I hope I'll be able to keep it that way.

Debbie, I figured out the comments were for someone else. LOL

I meant to say I enjoyed the wrestling description too. I was actually crying from laughing so hard. Thanks for the laugh Apple.

    Hi all,

My family Christmas get-together weekend was this weekend... The cream of chicken soup was a hit.... We keep trying to reign in the quantity of food but each year my Mom fails to get the memo!! I tried to pace myself, trying only a small bit of everything but, when all added together, I don't think I need to eat again for at least a week!!

We all (5 families of us) bake different cookies to bring and enjoy for the weekend but, then the leftovers get divided up like a cookie exchange so you leave with more variety than what you brought! Helpful in the coming couple of weeks!

I think I need to really behave for the next couple of weeks... but we shall see!

I have a doctor's appointment on the 30th so would like for him not to blow a gasket on weight gain....

    Apple,

I have 2 nephews who are 14 months apart in age and the youngest, up until starting wrestling last year, always seemed to stand in his brother's shadow.. I have seen such a huge transformation in him over this past year not only academically, but he has become so much more confident and out-going as well! Could be just due to becoming more mature but, I do believe that wrestling played a big part in it! I do agree those matches are real nail biters!!

Laurie-Glad you had a great time at your party,  I agree the holidays are a great excuse hehe!

Kay- Wow, i wish i could have more will power this year, last year when i lost 20 pds i not only looked better but felt better, but this year i have been over indulging , and can't seem to stick with my plan this year. I really dont want to lose weight, but i need to lose inches in my belly area.

Ducky- Hope you found the time to get the tree up today/

Seaside- Your party sounded wonderful too, have you already shared the cream of chx soup? Maybe i missed it.

Michelle- Hope you are feeling well and resting today.

Now all this talk about cookes is making me hungry for somthing sweet......think i might just take a spoonful of my Nuetella.

Hi everyone!  Had a busy day - went out for breakfast, then did a little shopping.  We went to a birthday / football watch party at the home of our kids' friends.  We watched the Patriots win, then we were watching the Green Bay game and the Denver/Chicago game.  Lots of football and some yummy snack foods.  Now we are home relaxing, watching more football...lol, and eating popcorn.

Debbie - I am feeling really good...I wonder how long this can last???

Welcome Monine!  I love avocados, too.  A friend of mine brought me some big Florida avocados fresh off the tree and they were incredible! I love the idea of eating it with gooey grilled cheese.

Michelle- Your husband must think you are a dream come true (on may levels) but you actually LIKE football!  I like the food and thr friends- if its just us and it's quiet I go read.  I think it's great.

  • LuvRVing

Laurie - I may like it more than he does...lol!  When we lived in Missouri, I went to lots of Chiefs games without him - I'd go with my daughter, or my son, or a friend.  We lived just fifteen minutes from Arrowhead and it was a fun place to watch a game.  He would rather play golf, and he could do that in MO.  Three of my kids were at the party and they all play fantasy football, so it gets crazy and he gets into it a bit more when there's a crowd.

I spent 10 years in Texas (ages 4-14) and they live and breathe football there.  The first pro game I saw was in about 1960 - the Dallas Texans who later became the KC Chiefs!  Hopefully next year I can go to see a Patriots game, preferably early in the season when the weather is decent.

    Laurie08 Member Posts: 2,047

Michelle- That is awesome that you would go with your kids and love it so much- the Texas background helps me understand where you get your passion.  We all love things for different reasons, loving a sport is FUN.  I, being from NH, grew up in a hockey family.  My brother played and so did I- so last year with the Bruins I was the one screaming at the tv while DH slept.  In the morning he would wake up and say what happened?  Did they win?  On the nights the Bruins played during the Cup the boys had to go to bed early- just by 15 minutes- but still!  I couldn't risk a text from my brother to ruin it, lol!

Michelle- I hope it last forever!! What a fun day it sounds like you had. I love football too but not as big as a fan as you are ha! I love the 49ers bout time they started playing good again!

Laurie- Wow- So cool, you were a hockey playe? Thats quite a tough game, I was even afraid of baseball LOL! You Rock!

  • Kay_G
    Kay_G Member Posts: 1,914

Michelle, I love football too, but only really the Eagles. And as everyone here says, my second favorite team is whoever is playing the Cowboys.

Laurie, that is cool about you plaing hockey. My son used to play on a travel team, and the best player on the team was a girl! She was also the one with the most penalties. While he played, I was interested in the NHL, but since he stopped, I lost my interest. But my real love is baseball. And it is difficult to get Tim for the Phillies. We have been on a waiting list since dec. 2010 for a 17 game ticket plan. Will find out in January if we will be able to get them for next year. The sad part is we used to have them, but missed the deadline for sending in payment and lost our tix. When we realized we missed the deadline, we tried to call and pay, but it was too late. Keeping our fingers crossed for next year.

  • LuvRVing
    LuvRVing Member Posts: 2,409

Kay - I do like baseball, too.  The Kansas City Royals were such a poor team the whole time we lived out there, that we could decide at 6:30 that we wanted to go see a game, drive to the stadium, buy tickets and be in our seats for the first pitch at 7:05!  It's nice to be in Red Sox territory, where there is at least a chance of watching your team in a playoff game.  Same with the Patriots - there is a prayer they will win a playoff game.  The "anti-Cowboys" fans have lots to be happy about recently.  They have blown double-digit leads in the last quarter and lost games they should have won.  One of my sons is an avid Cowboys fan and the rest of the family gives him a hard time.

Laurie - Not sure why I never got into hockey... my thought is "grown men with sticks who are allowed to beat on each other"...lol.

  • Laurie08
    Laurie08 Member Posts: 2,047

I think thats why I like hockey?  LOL!  Or maybe it was because all of the boys who played hockey were always so cute!  I grew up playing pond hockey with my brother and watching him play.  When I went to high school they had a girls team so I did it.  Loved it.  I played center for all 4 years and in my senior year we won our division, which was a nice way to go out.  I like to watch baseball too- I don't know what it is about football?  Maybe just low exposure as a kid.

Tonight is spaghetti pie, not DH's favorite but you can't please everyone, the kids will be happy and I like it.  I have a salad to go with it and some garlic bread.  In my house if I don't serve dinner with some kind of bread everyone is disappointed.  Personally, I don't eat much of it, sometimes none at all.  But it's better to cook it then hear through the whole meal- where's the bread?

  • Kay_G
    Kay_G Member Posts: 1,914

My family is the same way with bread. I never heard of spaghetti pie?

I made the upside down pizza casserole tonight. It was good. I put onions, shittake mushrooms and broccoli in it. I think one of the things I like about it is that it is the whole meal, although I did make a salad with it.

Put up our artificial tree last night. Heard a lot of complaints from the kids about not having a real tree. I am happy with it though.
