No good news on the jaw pain. An x-ray showed nothing in the jaw. A shot of long-lasting novacaine to last the weekend didn't help. Heat is soothing. I think we'll need to move on to a doctor that deals with nerve pain.

My lunch didn't happen because I accompanied dh to his appointment with the dental surgeon.

Dinner was warmed up last night's dinner.

No cancer in the jaw for your dh was great news, Wally.

All of you who posted are eating well.

Minus, I baked the rice pudding in a bain marie, so sort of similar.

Carole, so very sorry for your DH's pain. DH dealt with pain for so long I thought it would never end, but it did. May your DH have a speedier recovery. My DH did have a nerve sitting on his trigeminal nerve so maybe along that line for yours…I sure hope not. Keep us posted and sending good thoughts.

Windy here today. Hope no more power outages.

Wally, Good news about your DH's pathology report. Healing from the surgery does take time; I hope a dental prosthesis is in the future. You seem to have figured out how to make tasty easy to chew meals.

Carole, Sorry that your DH's pain continues. My left behind root did not show on an x-ray (hidden by a bone spur and found by the CT radiologist.) I had to insist my PCP order a CT; he did not want to but when he called his ENT colleagues that was their recommendation. The oral surgeon's hospital was over 3 hours away so he felt that local imaging would be quickest and enable him to see what was going on. I hope someone can figure it out.

Minus, My grandmother had one of those on the wall trumpet telephones that remained there when the more modern ones were installed.

Reader, Corn chowder sounds wonderful given the snow that we are having. It's not deep enough for the snow blower so it requires shoveling every day.

Dinner tonight is going to be unstuffed cabbage rolls.

I made French bread pizza with a side salad, easy and delicious.

DH is cooking for my birthdays (Sunday and Monday), not sure what we’re having, he said I’d like it and gave no further details.

Eric, That’s the type of phone that was in my grandmother’s house. It’s amazing that you got it working.

Illimae, Happy birthday! It sounds like you’ll have a delicious surprise.

The unstuffed cabbage roll was good and used up the remaining cabbage.

    Happy Birthday, Illimae!

Mae - how come you get two birthdays? May they both be happy.

Carole - I sent you a PM. My dentist & periodontist both said to see an endodontist when my pain wouldn't go away. He found an extra root that wasn't visible on standard dental X-rays. Who could ever believe that I have three different dental specialists….. But tooth pain is the WORST. I do have a neurologist. She diagnosed & watches my CIPN (chemo induced peripheral neuropathy). I don't know if she would do tooth/jaw pain, but I'm sure anything's worth trying at this point.

Thanks everyone! I have 2 birthdays because I was born in Korea on February 19th but there’s the time change, so right now, on the 18th in the US, it’s the 19th there. I found out about this when I was a teen and have celebrated an American birthday and a Korean one.

My 1st birthday started with coffee and a gift in bed, then downstairs to find DH making me pancakes 😀

Happy b-day Illimae! May you have many more healthy, happy ones.

I made mac/cheese last night. Not sure what tonight will be…either leftovers or I may go buy some cod and use up the spinach "sauce" I used for the salmon.

Illimae, I was a bit puzzled about the two birthdays! Clever you to take advantage. LOL.

I am thawing two boneless chicken breasts with the plan to make a chicken/spinach/artichoke heart dish that requires minimum jaw action to consume it. I don't have a recipe, just a general concept. The dish is basically expanded creamed spinach.

We haven't been having salads, since dh can't manage to eat raw crispy foods. Last night I made myself a salad and may do so tonight.

I walked 46 minutes in my neighborhood today. I once walked the same route in less time during my power walking days but "still walking" is good. It's a lovely day out, 55 degrees according to my laptop. But tonight freezing temperatures are predicted.

Minus, we have nerves all over the body. I would guess there are neurologists who know about face nerves. We definitely plan to find out.

Wally, I do admire your menu planning for including so much fish. Please keep us up to date on how your dh is faring in recovery.

I did the cod in spinach "sauce" and mashed up some over-cooked carrots with roasted garlic. Ice cream for dessert.

DH is doing well. Some throbbing but not much pain. I hope he'll heal well enough to get a partial at some point…months away. Carole, I hope your DH can determine cause of his pain.

I do enjoy fish and when our freezer is stocked with salmon, I need to get creative or it gets old, quickly. I can happily eat a can of sardines right out of the can, LOL.

Dinner was perfect slow cooked ribs and cauliflower in a cheese sauce. Definitely a treat.

Illimae, My college roommate and I were born on the same day so we carried on a friendly argument about who was older. Her time of birth was two hours before mine but I was born in a time zone three hours ahead of hers. A 48 hour celebration makes your birthday so much better!

Carole, Your dinner sounds delicious as well as easy to chew.

Tonight's dinner was a Syrian ground lamb meatball dish on rice.

Yum on the meals. I can eat sardines out of the can, too, Wally. My father did that fairly often, putting the sardines on crackers.

The dish last night was good. Lots of leftovers for tonight's dinner.

Maggie, what goes into a Syrian ground lamb meatball?

  • maggie15
    maggie15 Member Posts: 1,439

    Syrian meatballs

meatballs: 1 lb ground lamb, 1 med onion chopped, 1 tbsp parsley, 1 tsp curry powder, 1/2 tsp chopped mint, pinch cayenne, salt & pepper, 1 egg

sauce: 1 lb plum tomatoes, 1 large onion chopped, 2 cloves garlic chopped, 1/4 tsp ground ginger, 1 tsp chopped mint, 1 tbsp parsley, pinch cayenne, salt & pepper, 1/4 to 1/2 pint water (it's a British recipe)

Mix meatballs and shape into 12-14 balls, brown in about 1 tbsp olive oil in skillet, push to the side and add sauce ingredients (water after browning a bit,) cover and cook about 30 to 45 minutes, serve on rice.

Carole, Leftovers for another meal make your life so much easier.

Illimae, Happy second birthday! Your DH must be a good cook.

Dinner tonight will be leftover meatballs.

I'm making a Tennessee corn pone riff using ground turkey for tonight.

My parents passed along to me eating smoked oysters out of a can instead of sardines. YUM. Sometimes that's my entire dinner. Sometimes I get out Triscuits.

Love triscuits. Love oysters. Smoked…no can do. Which brand do you buy? I love everything tinned so have to give it another try.

My Tennessee corn pone riff turned out great. It was like eating ground turkey with a cloud.

Wally - My parents always bought Crown Prince smoked oysters (in olive oil) Geisha brand is what I usually buy (in sunflower oil). I didn't care for the Roland brand. I will buy the Kroger store brand but if I remember they are considerably smaller.

My parents did not drink so when they had people over Mom served hot Consume Madrilene and crackers with tinned smoked oysters & several kinds of cheeses for appetizers. Also canned Bumble Bee smoked sturgeon which I believe has been off the market for some time. This was in the 1950s. We were allowed to pass napkins before we had to go to bed. They had couple friends who played bridge. Since they had two sons, my brother & I were always invited to make a second table. (but we didn't trade off & play with the grown ups). That was another special time that smoked oysters were served. And on New Years Eve we always had young people's bridge tables with appetizers.

Minus I love these memories you shared. Thank you.

When mother had her lady friends over ( infrequently) I remember one time she made cream puffs filled with custard. The night of that event she sent us upstairs to watch the black and white TV 📺 and brought up a big tray she set aside for me and my two brothers. I am sure there were none left and we were "quiet as church mice" between TV, sugar and being up past our bedtime. 😊

Tonight was leftover chicken enchiladas and beans.

Tomorrow I’ll use the last of the French bread for pizzas again.

The weather is finally warming up, so it feels like time for some salads and generally lighter, veggier dinners.

Thought this was a great food quote from cartoonist Ryan Cook: "People have such emotional memories and ties to (this) food, based on who they experienced it with and the time in their life when the had it."

Flew to FL with a long connection delay for an unusual reason. A large service dog on the incoming flight got sick all over the aisle and seats so we had to wait for a replacement plane. Wore my N95 mask for 12 hours straight and was thankful I had eaten a large breakfast. Dinner was Subway takeout.

Minus, that quote is so true.

Hi, ladies. Been off this thread and will likely remain so until I get used to the side effects of Zepbound and determine what foods I can tolerate and should be eating. I'd review various protein bars & shakes, but naaaahh. I need to get used to not being on "keto, then cheat-oh:" cut way back on fats except for healthy ones, keep protein front & center, and gradually reintroduce healthy complex carbs (whole grains & fruits). The drug does keep my tummy fuller, and turns off the "food noise" that used to drive my carb/sugar cheat binges. Lost 18 lbs. my first month. not dining out too often these days—but when I do I go for quality.

Tonight I nuked rainbow trout in parchment with tricolor peppers & fresh herbs; had a spring mix salad with rainbow grape tomatoes; and nuked some wild rice I got at Target. Delicious, but hard to plow through. (I have to eat 1200 cal./day to avoid the metabolic "starvation response").

I will come up for air periodically. Meanwhile, I'll be over on the "Older" thread. (Spending too much time online, especially down the Reddit rabbit hole).
