Moon,
Congrats to your daughter and her new fiance!! Really great pics of the family too!!0 -
DD & SIL are stuck in Philly due to the storm.

Red Baron's pizza tonight. Feel like crap, sneezing and it hurts when I cough. Trip to the drug store tomorrow after clean up after the storm. Most of the storm is suppose to hit during he night 3 to 6 inches.

For Michelle:
No doctors. Sick as a dog... bagged all the Graves meds. Will get a full blood panel tomorrow. Then I need to find a second opinion. Have almost no memory of the past two days. I hear the food was good. Didn't eat anything though.

Seaside, we were fortunate enough not to have violent weather yesterday. Some wind and rain but no tornadoes. Thanks for asking.
Christmas is over. Packed away the tree and decorations and have the house back in order.
Tomorrow is my mother's 90th birthday! DH and I and one of my sisters will go out to lunch with her to celebrate. She always gets Christmas and birthday presents on Christmas day so she was busy opening presents yesterday.
Have enjoyed everyone's posts and responded mentally to each.

After spending hours reading all the pages of post I forgot what I wanted to say, wish I had a photogenic memory!
We had a nice time away even with all the dr appointments we managed to have fun too met some friends who had to travel to Portland to and had a nice dinner out, then my nephew gave us tickets to see the blazers play we got a nice suite it was really nice but not as nice the "nike shoe" next to us that thing was gigantic, great food and drinks although I only drank water and soda since Im the DD now. Then we drove to see my dad and had a wonderful time with him and the rest of the family we left on Christmas eve because the weather had been so bad we fought snow, sleet, hail, heavy rain, and lightning driving for the last 11 days and that was the only day that was going to be decent a good thing we left when we did because they got snowed in right after we left. Sounds like everyone had a nice christmas and everyones food sounded amazing. We just slept most the day yesterday and didn't make anything special ( steak and green beans) We had our christmas celebration early with family so I didn't mind.

Gosh, Christmas has come and gone so fast! Carole, I thought my DH was the undecorating champ (usually no more than 48 hours), but you win the prize lol! I'm in awe!
Susan, sure hope you can get a handle on the situation, gettin a little worried about you.
Michelle and Monica, great pics! Lacey, hope your DH has a smooth recovery. My dad had no issues with his recent cataract surgery, so I hope that holds true for you too. Laurie, enjoy your getaway, you've earned it!
We had a lovely Christmas with family and friends. My favorite DBIL and DSIL are still here but will leave tomorrow, and Saturday we will go visit my 86 year old dad. I have tons of leftovers but we are trying to make a dent. Tonight, however, I made turkey tetrazzini and Brussels sprouts with pancetta, garlic, lemon and parmesan. Still have leftover Italian cream cake, which came out really good (although I'm not a cake baker). I really don't want to get on the scale.0 -
"Brussels sprouts with pancetta, garlic, lemon and parmesan"
This sounds delicious!

Carol, I am a firm believer in the twelve days of Christmas, so our tree is usually up til Jan 6. Sometimes it seems a bit long, but I love it so up it stays. It was a bit more problematic when we had a real tree, those things get very dry! LOL
0 -
Lee, I agree, that sounds soooo delicious!!! Nancy, would you mind sharing the recipe for the Brussels Sprouts?
0 -
Certainly! The only problem is I picked the sprouts off a stalk and I'm not sure how much I used. I'm going to speculate a pound. I didn't use a recipe so I'm winging it here.
2 ounces pancetta, diced
4 cloves garlic minced
1 lb. Brussels sprouts, shredded or sliced
1/4 cup water
Juice from 1/2 lemon
Salt and pepper
Grated parmesan
In a skillet over medium heat, fry pancetta until golden. Add garlic, saute for 1 minute. Add Brussels sprouts, stirring and turning to coat. Add water and lemon juice. Cover and let braise for approximately 5 minutes (or less) or until nearly tender. Uncover, add salt and pepper to taste. Turn up heat and let excess moisture evaporate. Sprinkle parmesan over sprouts and serve.
They were pretty tasty. I also added 1/4 tsp fresh thyme that I had with the salt and pepper.0 -
Thanks so much, Nancy! I just took a screenshot to add to my recipe folder.
I love those big prehistoric-looking brussel sprout stalks!

I decided to can the turkey stock instead of freezing it. The canner is building pressure as I type this.
I'm doing 10 1/2 pint jars. It's not much, but an interesting thing to try. We use stock instead of water when we cook rice, so it will get used.
I'll write more later when I have a real keyboard instead of the phone. It's later.
The canner is cooling. I figure it'll be another 30 minutes before it can be opened.
Moon. We normally leave our tree up until after New Years, but our new "used to be a boy" dog has decided the tree needs his decorating talents... sigh..so it may come down sooner than expected.
Susan, I too am sorry that you're not feeling better. You too, Deb.
Carole. Happy Birthday to your mom. It sounds like she's doing well...which is awesome. I love interacting with the "more senior" folks.
Lacey, sending my wishes to your DH. My mom and grandmother had their cataracts fixed the same day by the same doctor. They both were thrilled with the results. I hope your husband is as thrilled.
Moon. Congrats to your daughter and future son in law.

(((Susan))) Hope you are feeling better and that you find the source of your trouble. A second opinion sounds like an excellent idea. Perhaps a trip to the ER of one of the other fabulous hospitals near you would make getting that second opinion a little easier. If you can't remember anything from the last couple of days, I think you should seek some immediate help.
Eric - canning turkey stock? Brilliant!
Debbie - glad you enjoyed your visit with family and the game. How is your DH doing?
We were forecast to get a boatload of snow starting last night, but it changed to rain and has gotten warmer. We are within 20 miles of the rain/snow line so I hope the storm doesn't drift south and east. Rain is OK, a foot of snow is definitely not OK!
My treatment yesterday went well and if I have any SEs, it should happen on Saturday. I'm guessing the dose is small enough that I'll be ok. I feel fine at the moment and even kicked DH out of the kitchen last night so I could make meatloaf, o'brien potatoes and cole slaw. Fortunately, he figured out that the eviction notice was rescinded when it came time for clean up...lol!

Michelle: So glad you are doing ok with your tx! You are an inspiration to all of us. I must admit that I panicked at the thought of doing chemo tx initially, but now, if needed, I wouldn't hesitate. Sending you prayers and positive energy.
I'm not doing much cooking these days...getting ready for my upcoming adventure in South Carolina with the new guy in my life! Leaving Saturday and I'll be there until the first week in February when we will drive back to Fl together and he will meet my family. He's a real gem, and we feel blessed that we met so late in life. Love is always possible if you open your heart and are willing to take a risk. The road was bumpy along the way, but it was worth it in the end! My family and friends were all so confused and dismayed by my recent life changes, that I had to ask them to just stop trying to figure me out and wish me well...LOL!
All of the posted recipes sound wonderful and I'll definitely try some of them when I settle back on land again!

Just finishing my last cup of coffee then DH and I will head out to clear the driveway... Looks to me like we got 6-8 inches or so... It looks so pretty on the trees and lucky for us DH is off from work and neither of the kids has anyplace they have to be today!
Nancy,
Thanks for the recipe! I think I will try that with our leftover roast beef... DH and I wanted to do Brussels Sprouts for Christmas dinner but figured my in-laws and the kids wouldn't touch them with a 10-foot pole so we played it safe with a broccoli casserole with cheese... The sprouts sound so much more appealing to me!
Susan,
Sounds like you are really feeling pretty lousy. I hope you feel better soon! Being sick is no fun and being sick during the holidays is even worse. Hope the bloodwork helps them figure out whats going on!0 -
Well WE got the boatload of snow last night, probably 8-12 inches as predicted. Stayed in with the hubby and kids and did up the prime rib( finally) with baked potato and green beans and pearl onions in sherry. I got the prime rib just right...big deal seeing as I really need a better meat thermometer.
Sorry to those that are sick....Susan, you really need a doctor, you are scaring me. Sending big hugs your way.
Debbie When he starts to vacuum you then you know you have been sitting there too long. God bless him for vacuuming!
We will need to start cleaning up the leftovers also. But fortunately my son is still here so there wont be any problem.
Moon loved the family pics and congrats to your daughter.

Debbie, incredible post responding to so many people! Glad you're back home, safe. Portland gets a lot of print space in the foodie press as a great place to eat.
My mother always took our Christmas tree down the day after Christmas. I remember a year or two when we took it down Christmas night! We were a large family in a small house. And Christmas was over after the gifts were opened and the big noon dinner was eaten. I feel exactly the same way. Christmas decorations appear so early now, even before Thanksgiving. By the day after Christmas I'm ready to resume regular life, which I find very satisfying.
Eric, I went through a "canning phase" some years back. Actually a good many years back. I made delicious pickled squash and pickled green beans. During my childhood, my mother had a huge canner. I guess it was a big round pressure cooker. She canned quarts of tomatoes, pickles, green beans. She abandoned the canner when there was a place where she and my father could take their garden produce and come away with big cartons of canned veggies actually in metal cans. I still think canned tomatoes in glass jars are very pretty.
Dishwashers make canning in jars easier because you can sterilize the jars without going to a lot of trouble.
I cooked brussel sprouts last night, too. I split them in half and--following Martha Stewart's advice on her new PBS cooking school--I parboiled them for 3 min. before dousing them in some EVOO and seasoning with s & p, onion and garlic powder (too lazy to mince the garlic) and roasting them in a hot oven. DH, who recently divulged that he doesn't like the little cabbages, thought they were very good. I thought they were too tender. We sprinkled a really good balsamic vinegar on our servings before eating. I just remembered that I usually sprinkle with asiago or parmesan and I completely forgot last night. I really like brussel sprouts, much better than the big cabbage.
The last bag of CSA veggies was bountiful. Round cabbage, big bundle of small carrots with tops on, cauliflower, broccoli, salad greens, swiss chard or kale, sprigs of mint.
DH gave me the Complete America's Test Cooking TV Show Cookbook, 2001-2013. We're talking a HEAVY book!
Kaara, good luck with your new relationship.
Michelle, fingers crossed that the treatment works miracles with no SEs.
Susan, how are you?
Same question to Apple. I went looking for Apple on other threads and found an incredible autobiographical post. What an interesting life she has led.
Lacey, my cataract surgery brought a wonderful improvement in my eyesight. Suddenly I didn't have to wear contacts or glasses other than reading glasses. I chose distance vision over mono vision because I wanted to see where the golf ball went. I saw that it didn't go far enough!
Hope everyone is enjoying after-Christmas.

We just got slushy wet heavy snow, not even an inch. Raining now.
0 -
Deb - overnight we got a little snow followed by rain. Then this morning it changed to freezing rain and now it's snowing, except for when some pelting sleet or freezing rain shows up in the mix. Very fickle weather system! Snow on top of ice is not a good thing, though.
If the power doesn't go out, I'm making the high temperature eye of the round roast:
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/high-temperature-eye-of-round-roast/detail.aspx
I've posted this link before and I think a few of you have tried it, successfully. The one downside is that the smoke alarms will blare for a minute or two. That 500 degree thing is just more than my little kitchen can handle, but we'll just open the door and turn on the vent for a couple of minutes.

Debbie, you are so impressive with your responses to everyone. I would be going back and forth reviewing the posts and lose my own in the process...so I rely on my pathetic memory if all the posts are not conveniently on the same page! Glad you enjoyed your trip and hope you and DH are both feeling well...yes, it is nice to be back in one's own bed!
Kaara, best to you in your new relationship!
Michelle, keeping my fingers crossed for a mild Saturday for you...and I'm not referring to the weather, which apparently is NOT going to be mild at all. We are having driving rain today, which, while annoying, is preferable to a foot of snow, especially because DH should not be shoveling today and we had to be at his surgical follow up at 8AM.
Afterwards, it was still really early, so we drove over to Captain Marden's for omelets and I had the most delicious Maine sweet lump crabmeat/zucchini and cheese omelet. WOW! Worth going back for, and I almost never have breakfast, let alone out. It was worth skipping my smoothie for this. Gotta get back to my regular healthy food regimen and find another setting for all of the baked goods I still have in this house!
Have a good day everyone....and good luck with all the shoveling, Carrie. We're not far behind you.0 -
Oh, I posted some pix on Facebook from our grand-babies' visit. If any of my BC sisters on this thread want to see them just PM me and I'll share my Facebook acct. I think I missed the last Facebook acct. sharing......

Carole and Lacey- LOL on remembering so many post, actually after writing all I can remember I copy on to this area and go back to re read others and copy again then paste after Im done, problem is after doing that I forget who I posted to and have to re read it to make sure I don't have any repeats lol! Thankfully I don't get behind to often!
Carole-You are right, the portland area is full of wonderful restuarants and the night life is alive at night. The parking there sucks though, when we met our friends for dinner they had us meet them at an area they call the Hollywood district that is almost impossible to find parking, we drove around for 40 minutes in heavy rain and even drove 5 miles out, I got honked at twice and flipped off 3 times I was ready to cry LOL!
Michelle and everyone on the east coast be safe out driving in the bad weather I see you are having ice storms. Be safe! Dh is hanging in there unfortunatly the PT is not helping with his unbalance problems and he is feeling frustrated and will probably have his surgery to remove the tumor in late january or Feburary he was hoping to avoid that but don't think that will happen.
Kaara- Good for you! You know what they say "Out with the old and in with the new" Hope you are Happy.
Eric- I forgot to say, congrats on getting all the cast iron. I love my cast iron and use it for almost everything I cook. It's the one thing I would want if I was stranded on an island. ha!

Thank you all for your voices of concern. Not sure if I can explain what happened starting on Saturday, but I will make a stab at it. They, the infamous "they", started to mess with my thyroid. The primary drug made me feel awful, so I was taking half dose twice a day. Slowly but surely, my body responded negatively. Chances are my thyroid flared and caused the high fevers, but since I was compromised I also picked a flu-like thing. On Xmas Eve day and Christmas Day, my body was shutting down. When I collapsed on the floor yesterday [well, I let myself down onto the floor so I wouldn't bump my head], it was clear something needed to be done. I made a call today to my primary's office and got this WONDERFUL Chinese doctor. Finally! Someone who could help me get clarity.
My blood pressure was, I kid you not, 80/60. Just two weeks ago they were discussing increasing my lisinopril dose. My liver enzymes are out the roof. Of course, I am dehydrated. She says I just have to start eating again. Will take a few days to get over this, I fear but I plan to have another follow up visit with this primary.
Nothing tastes good right now, but I must eat.
*susan*
p.s. Kaara, what happened to The Golf Low Carb Man? This sounds like a story worth hearing, unless we have a new grandbaby or granddog on the horizon.

Ok- I have just a minute to post- but I agree-
Kaara- New guy? Whats the dish :P
Susan- That sounds very scary. I hope you are feeling better and are able to heat and hydrate. Please take care of yourself.
Michelle- Hope you enjoy your roast. I did the same thing last night and I cook it the same way you do. Just like my Memere taught me.
We got a bunch of snow but not as much as they said we would. Maybe 6-8 inches? Went sledding, built a fort, made banana bread and now I am making homemade chicken noodle soup for dinner while DH snow blows the driveway. My SIL called DH today and asked if she could babysit next weekend instead...I am super bummed. I was looking forward to leaving tomorrow afternoon....ahh well. What can you do? I just hope she doesn't say the same thing next week.
Stay warm everyone!
0 -
Susan I don't want you to heat yourself...just eat
0 -
Oh. No snow here. Not a speck. Just lots of rain. *

Oh, I can't possibly out-do Debbie! lol I am glad you're back and that everyone had a good Christmas
Susan, I'm glad you're feeling better. That sounds sureal.
I cna't catch up! I have a fire going and think I'll cook the defrosted whiting and give it to the kitties because I don't feel like eating it tonight.
I'm glad everyone had a great holiday!
