Hi Michelle! Yes the heat is ridiculous! No point in watering- it would just result in an astronomical water bill! I was a mail carrier for six years and worked all day in the heat (and cold) without it bothering me- now I'm outside 5 minutes and go back in!! I've become a wimp!

Thanks for the chicken ideas! It's so hard to come up with stuff the kids will eat too! If it wasn't for peanut butter and cheese, my 5 year old would starve!

Hope your party escapes the rain- HAVE FUN!!

Hi everyone!  JoyceK, her husband, my husband and I had a great visit tonight.  It did rain, so there was no golfing or sitting outside.  Actually, it got downright chilly - just about 60 here.  Too bad it couldn't have held off for a little while.  But the conversation was warm and friendly!

It's amazing - they know so many of my family members!  Bob's family and my grandmother's family immigrated from the same area of Quebec!  Who knows, we could be related...lol!  It was like we'd known each other forever!  Well, in a way we have!

They brought the pizza, we provided desserts that came from the Modern Pastry Shop via our local grocery store (for those of you who recognize the name of the BEST pastry shop in Boston's North End).

They live just 12 miles from us, so you can be sure we'll be getting together again very soon!  And I'm guessing the guys will be playing golf together.

OH wow, so many posts i have missed, now i have to try to remember what everyone said on the previous page ( thanks chemo) LOL!  And trying to watch Housewives of NY city at the same time LOL!

Michelle- First of all, Im sorry about your friend who has fallen ill, i will say a prayer for her.

And your blog was so beautiful. when you describe sitting on your front porch looking out at the lake i feel like im right there- sounds so serene and beautiful- I posted on your blog and i meant every word i said-  We have checked into gettting a air conditioner for our room but our windows are huge and i think it might be a problem we love it here so would hate to move but we are talking about it, meanwhile we have 5 fans going in our room at the same time. a ceiling fan, i fan on my side of the bed on night stand, one at the foot of the bed 1 on my hubbies side of the bed on  night stand and one on the dresser, it does help LOL! Sorry your party got rained out- but sounds like you had a great time.

The chicken dishes all sounded good, i do the parmesan chx with mayo and parmesan cheese, also add paprika to the mayo and cheese it gives it a great taste. have you seen the recipe laurie posted with the chicken salsa, it is so good i would really recommend it.

We had bq ribs tonight with macaroni salad that i added some imitation crab legs cut up in the salad it was really good.

    edited for typos

Hi everyone!  Boy I have a lot of catching up to do!  Things have been so busy around here.  My husband is on vacation and does not know how to sit still!  We just spent a few days at the lake and are "pit stopping" for the night here before we had to the ocean camping for five days.  So today is all about food!  I am prepping and packing and doing as much as I can here so that I will have less to do while we are at the ocean.

Michelle I am so sorry it rained for you and Joyce for your get together but glad that it sounds as though you had a great time despite the rain.

I have to run as there is lots to do and little time to get it all done.  But I didn't want you all to think I went MIA Tongue out

Here is a picture of the lake at sunset our first night there.

Laurie - lovely sunset, what lake is it?  And where are you going ocean camping?  We used to camp at Bayley's Family Campground near Old Orchard Beach, and Hermit's Island a little farther north on Casco Bay.  Will you be right on the ocean???  It seems the weather will be great, so have a wonderful time!

Joyce - I just ate a cut up Granny Smith apple with extra sharp cheddar from Sugarbush Farm in Vermont.  It's been aged at least 38 months and it is OMG good!  I'm off to their website to see what I can learn and BUY!!!  Apples with cheddar is one of my favorite pairings!

Ooohhh, I wish I could have that wine!  I'll have to just think about it right now.  I have chemo tomorrow, and red wine just isn't going down at the moment...oh, unless I make Sangria.  I seem to be able to drink a diluted red.  OK, next week it's gonna happen!

    Great idea!

My last chemo went well!  So far at least, thanks for asking.  Wish I didn't have surgery to look forward to though. Oh, well, that will be over before I know it too.

Laurie, that is a beautiful picture of the sunset.  Hope you enjoy your beach camping as well.  Sounds like Michelle and Joyce had a nice visit.  That is wonderful!  Hope you'll have many more.

I was bad tonight too Joyce.  We had some steak from that neighbor's cow we bought butchered, and it was delicious.  And had some garlic green beens and some roasted red potatoes with butter, garlic, lemon and salt.  Also delicious.  But the really bad part, a piece of fudge and a couple of salt water taffies we brought home from the shore.  I knew I shouldn't have let my daughter talk me into buying those.

Good luck with your chemo tomorrow Michelle!

Joyce - lol!  We had steaks, too.  Rick grilled a couple of ribeyes and asparagus, and I made a salad.  And we had mini cannolis for dessert.  It was a beautiful evening...where was this last night???    We had about 30 raindrops at 5 or so, then the skies cleared and it has been so nice.

I have AC #4 tomorrow, but I don't get started until after 1:00, so it's going to be at least 5:00 or later before we finish.  Now, don't anyone panic if you don't hear from me for a few hours tomorrow Wink

    Kay1963,

Glad to hear that your chemo went well!!! After chemo, surgery will seem really not so bad!

    Michelle,

You KNOW we will all be thinking of you tomorrow! Sounds like it's going to be looooong day BUT, after tomorrow, AC is in your past!!! Onto Taxol, which, from what i have heard has the potential to be easier than the AC.... Hope that is your experience!

Sounds like dinner tonight wa a really good one! Rib-eyes are my husband's favorite!

    Joyce,

It really is soooo amazing how you and Michelle found each other and have so much in common... Sometimes fate is amazing!!! Gotta love a good filet! And beets.... One of my favorites!

Michelle, good luck with the treatment.  I spent yesterday getting scanned...the nurse could not access my port, tried two times and failed, and i finally told her to please use a vein as she was killing me!  bone and abd and chest scans, will get results on thurs when I go for my herceptin.

About the steak, I started whining on Friday evening that i was craving a steak and finally on Sun my DH said lets cook on the grill and get you that steak.  Ha ha dont know if my labs are low or what but that steak sure hit the spot.

We like the apples and cheese when on the boat, great finger foods to go with our wine. anyone got any great hor duerve recipes that transport well to take boating?  I am running out of ideas.

Carberry - ouch, ouch, ouch!!!  I would be totally bummed if my chemo nurse had trouble accessing my port!   Good luck with your scans - hope everything is clean as a whistle!  Even though I am a diabetic, eat more protein than the average gal, and am not afraid to eat beef, my protein levels and red blood counts have been just slightly under the low range.  So I have been trying to bump things up as much as I can, although it's possible that I just naturally live in the low range.  I still do the food shopping, so DH grills whatever I bring home Laughing

Some interesting appetizer ideas from the Food Network that seem to not require too much fuss:

Well crud!  No AC for me today, my WBC was 1.2!!!  So not having a Neulasta shot last time didn't work out so well for me.  I am rescheduled for next Wednesday.  "Celebrating" with ice cream while DH gets his D'Angelo's fix.

    OH OUCH, carberry!

The whole point of having a port is so that you wouldn't have to go through all that! My thoughts will be with you tomorrow for the "all clear" on your scans and that your Herceptin goes well, too!

    Well, shoot Michelle!

That stinks! It must really suck to get yourself mentally prepared to receive chemo (not to mention your FINAL AC) and then have it not happen!! Hopefully your WBC count does a nice rebound during this next week! Did they give you your shot today? Or is that something that has to be done closer to when you receive your chemo?

Two nights ago we did grilled pizzas and BOY were they ever good.... We made individual ones and mine was a pizza inspired by a dish I had at Applebee's years ago....

After rolling out the dough and cooking briefly on one side, just enough so the dough isn't floppy anymore, remove it from the grill and flip it over. Pour a bit of thai peanut sauce (I used store bought House of Tsang Bankock Peanut Sauce) and spread out like you would regular pizza sauce. Dont' use too much because you don't want a soggy crust! Top with shredded cabbage like you would use for coleslaw, sliced green onions, cut up leftover chicken breast and sprinkle liberally with shredded mozzarella. Return to the gril, close the lid and grill until cheese is melted, taking care that the bottom doesn't burn. For those with a working thermometer on your grill I think we used a tempp right around 300 degrees. It was really

    good!!!

Tonight I'm trying a new chicken dish in my crockpot that, if it comes out good, is a keeper because it is ridiculously easy!!

    Hawaiian Pulled Chicken

Will let you know how it goes....

    Happy Cooking (and eating)!!

Seaside - no shot necessary.  Neulasta has to be administered within about a 24 hour window after treatment.  I think they could do Neupogen, I'm not exactly sure how that works but I think it's a series of shots.  In any case, they are pretty sure I'll recover on my own, so I'll just try to eat the foods that are supposed to help boost immunity, and hope I don't get a fever.  I should be just fine but yes, I am a little disappointed as I was so looking forward to being done with AC.  Oh well, gotta roll with the punches.

Good luck on your scans Carberry!  I feel like I am back to when I was first diagnosed with all the appointments I have now.  Just went today for a pre-op appointment.  Got a call when I came home from the RO's office seeing if I could change my appointment from Friday to next Tuesday.  I didn't even know I had an appointment on Friday.  I was so out of it from the Benedryl, I forgot the onc had made that appointment for me.  Good thing he called I guess.  I have to get an MRI and an Echo next week then surgery the 17th.  I was so enjoying only going every three weeks to the center.  You're a good example Michelle.  If you can roll with the punches, then so can I.  I am sure that is so disappointing not to be able to finish AC today.  You have a great attitude which will take you far on this journey.

Made up for last night's debauchery with a healthy dinner today.  Salmon (which was really good surprisingly), stir fried zucchini and a spinach salad.  Andy even though it was healthy it was yummy.  I think I am finally becoming an adult.  LOL

luvrving   thanks for links, love Giada.  Last night went boating  "hump night party". get together with friends every wed to get over the hump mid week, always lots of fun and never know who will show up.  I made a zucchini quiche and cut into squares for ease of eating. We load all the food on the swim platform and stand in the water and nibble, its like our floating buffet table.

Went to girlfriends yesterday before party and put up about 12 jars of dill pickles, first for me, she taught me how to do it and now gonna do some myself.  I lived on these during chemo, thanks to her, it was like being pregnant!  Ha Ha

Sorry about not being able to finish, hope the next week flies by for you.  I always got the neulasta shot no matter what.

Carberry - I agree that chemo is like being pregnant.  I have 4 kids, and I was more nauseous through those pregnancies until the last one, when I figured out that "eating" a little when I felt queasy made a huge difference.  That has helped me so much through this, so far.

    Love the floating buffet table!!!

    Ah, dill pickles...yummy!

Michelle- Sorry you werent able to finish your last chemo, I too had low counts and had to put off chemo a couple of times, and your right they will give you the nueprin (sp) shot i had to do that 6 days in a row, i was suppose to do 7 but told them i couldnt do it because the pain got so bad. Hope your counts are back up. Did you have a feeling they were low? I ask because everytime mine were that low i knew it, my body felt so run down and just not right, I would tell hubby, i know my counts are bad i can feel it.

Carberry- Do you mind sharing your zuccini squares? That sounds good. Ok now what is the "hump" must be a east coast thing, because the "hump" on the west coast means a little different at least i think if its the same thats one hecka of a party LOL!  The floating buffett sounds fun too.

Havnt been feeling to great the last couple of days, nothing worse than having a bad cold in the summer time. Been doing a lot of sleeping and blowing my nose, and coughing. I have got to get better for tomorrows night out.

Eating left overs from yesterdays pot roast in a crock pot that had pea, carrots, and green beans. Then made twice baked potatoes- You can put it on the grill so you dont have to turn on the oven, or microwave them. I scoop out all the potatoe in a bowl and add, butter, milk, sour cream, parmesan cheese and cheddar cheese, put it bak in the skin, at this point you ccan wrap it in foil and put it on a grill or in the oven. Everything tasted good even with a cold.

WOW, Seaside. I am totally into this pizza idea. I can even make it vegetarian. I use Quorn products, has anyone else ever heard of them/used them? If yes, what's your fav Quorn recipe?

One of mine is Greek Beans. If you'd rather eat it with actual ground meat, just substitute that for the Quorn grounds.

Debbie - I was feeling pretty good, other than just a bit of fatigue. My red count is low despite my diligence in eating high protein, high iron foods.  Actually it was low when they tested me before the first treatment, so it may be normal for me.   I learned yesterday that there are some food pairings that help with absorption, so I'll be focusing on adding some vitamin c foods to my plate.  As for the low whites, I did have one clue.  I scraped the back of my heel on the weekend, so I put on a dab of antibiotic cream and a bandaid. Now normally it would be healed in a day or two but on Wednesday it was still red and tender.  So I was a little suspicious.  But otherwise I felt fine.  I had been extremely busy for the last week with all the lake company and got through that without any real sense of overwhelming fatigue.

Yesterday I picked up my mom and took her to the beach.  We had lobster and clams, then sat on the beach for an hour, then we got ice cream.  It was a spectacular 75 degree day with a slight ocean breeze and perfectly blue skies.  She loved it!

Not much going on today.  I need to get a baby gift for my best friend's daughter who delivered a healthy baby girl on Tuesday after a very difficult pregnancy.  We are all relieved and I am looking forward to seeing the baby...apparently Kim plans on attending the shower with baby Madison.  I have known Kim since she was a month old (she's almost 40) and I plan on being an honorary auntie!  Everyone says her husband and mine look like brothers, so it's perfectly justified  Laughing

Here's one I threw together the other day. Turned out real good, considering I had no idea what I was doing but I wanted something different:

Boneless chicken pieces (or use a couple of chicken breasts diced,  red and green peppers, onions, mushroom, celery, carrots, potatos, brocolli, a can of diced tomatoes, 1/2 cup brown rice, paprika, salt & pepper........ and a few secret spices..... served with hot cheese biscuits!!!!

First, I through in my onions and garlic, when they started to sizzle, I added my chicken and seared both sides. Then I turned the temp. down a bit and started adding the rest of my ingredients. It's basically like a large bite stew.

I put the broccolli in the last 10 minutes of cooking time. I found cutting up the pieces into large bite size pieces added more to the look of the dish as well as the taste and things didn't break down tooo quickly while the chicken cooked.

JoyceK and LuvRVing... how nice to read of your newfound friendship.

I've been browsing this thread.  I used to love to cook and actually cheffed at a very flexible progresive continental restuarant.. (the owner was lebanese and the original chef cooked for Jackie Onassis and Ari.. he was Spanich but trained in France.  I have 5 big eaters at my house and I really need to cook daily so I am always looking for ideas.  I am so much 'weaker' and don't really like to eat so I don't find the same joy in cooking that I used to. Fortunately my two bigeater boys (and girl) like to cook.  They'll grill, sautee or cook bacon.. the chore-y parts.

anyway, I've been loving the recipes.. So many good ones.

debbie  Hump night is  the middle of the week, when we are working and trying to get "over the hump" till the end of the week.  Not what you are thinking...LOL.. that would be some party. our local wineries are on to the fact that people like to get together in the middle of the week and have started booking entertainment for wed nights, always a good crowd.  With our group of friends we dont really need a reason to party we just make things up...we have even had "kick cancers ass" parties.

The zucchini squares are just like a quiche recipe, sauteed up zucchini, onion, garlic and muchrooms. Mix five eggs with 1cup of milk, salt pepper (whatever spices you like) and add to store bought pie shell and bake.  I spread the pie shell ina 9x13 pan so I could cut in squares but can put in pie plate and serve in triangles.

Rushell   looks good.  Anything in one pot is ok with me!
