Lita - How awesome it is that we share the same birthDAY. So how about at 12 noon on Dec 10th we both say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to each other and lift a glass of juice, coffee, tea, wine. My present this year is the puppy.

Mags - How is your mouth doing? Pain any better? Glad to hear that Sas is doing well.
Shep - Although I was supposed to see the Rheumatologist today, my ride called at 8 a.m. and had to cancel because she is sick as a dog. So I had to reschedule my appt. to Nov. 30th. I'll make a reservation with Amtrak this time, so there is less of a chance of needing to reschedule again.

WildT - seriously 24 bags of leaves! So glad thats not my "job" around here. I hope your trees are done for the year. Very glad the DD is doing well, kids can be so strong.
Woohoo so far it looks like this week will be a no doctor week for the DH and I. He got sick with a prostate/bladder thing a week and a half before my surgery so it seems one of us is at the doctor every week for a while now. He has a big urology appt and I have my last surgeon follow up next week. Maybe things will get a little more normal after those. This week I'm sure feeling better and the nerve pain is still there but slightly easing up!

MammaR, hugs. Not sure how to answer your question. Forgive me if I put my foot in my mouth. BC not only affects us, but our love ones also. My younger DD has Dumbo's ears whenever I complain to my DH about sore/aches or discomfort in different parts of my body. I have to be careful what I say in her presence. She worries a lot. Poor kid. Our scars, SEs of drugs, and for many here, symptoms of metastasis on top of regular doc visits remind us daily of BC. But BC does not define us.... I have to remember that myself. I like this saying:

"Vote your conscience"..... Do we have a choice? I guess you can say yes, but it's a bitter taste in the mouth and I am unsettled.
I really feel for our sisters here along with those who rely on affordable care and are concerned about what will happen to it. We used to have the medically indigent program, but it was phased out by Obamacare. When ACA is overturned, we will most likely have more than half of my coworkers (who were like family) laid off come back. I should be happy, but somehow I feel torn.
If only politicians are true public servants...

I have a temp today, so didn't get chemo. This is really gonna throw my calendar off...oh well.
Watched Elena Monday when Claire went to sub. She got a temp while I was there. I am pretty good at washing my hands, but when her hand went in my mouth....well...I knew it was a losing battle..ha ha. Those germ factories!
Hope everyone is a little more pain free today

Glad the election is over and many of my family, friends and I are focusing on other things like our everyday lives. Been busy revising my first paper from this semester to send it to my professor to have her look at. Gearing up to write my final paper for the class. I have to do a proposal paper for the last one. My subject for proposal is on making school uniforms mandatory in public schools. I am not going to say we need to go as far as parochial and private schools go. It would make all the students equal as far as the clothing and they would be shown from an early age what the professional world would want them to dress like when the time comes.

Mommy, when my DD was in elementary school, they were optional. You could go to JC Penny's or the now defunct Mervyn's and buy slacks, skirts, jumpers, sweaters and shirts. I LOVED IT!!! It made it so easy, and if you bought the shirts/sweaters just one size up, you could carry those over from say 1st to 2nd grade, or 3rd to 4th grade. It ends up being CHEAPER than buying regular clothes that you have to replace every school year because of styles, fads, etc. Boys don't really care, but it's harder when you have girls - they want what everybody else is wearing. By the time DD was in 5th grade, everybody pretty much stopped wearing the uniform stuff....sigh! If you ask me, uniforms should be MANDATORY in jr high/middle school and high school because of all the teasing that kids have to endure, i.e. "Where did you get that from? The Salvation Army? You look like a dork...." etc. DD's elem school had a uniform bank for poorer families so they could get their uniforms either free with a voucher (moms like me would donate slacks and polo shirts that our kids had outgrown). PM me if you have questions or need specific quotes from an experienced mother ;o).

Will do Lita. I remember having to wear a uniform myself when I was in 4th grade. I went to a Catholic school for most of that year as my mom was not very happy with way that the public school I had been in was teaching me. Hated having to wear a uniform but now that I look back on it, it made us all equal.
Kids in the town I live in have to wear a uniform to school like what I had described in my previous post. My proposal would be along the lines of this and would go from Kindergarten all the way to 12th grade

My I jump in as a lurker? On the topic of mandatory school uniforms, it is a topic dear to my heart. My children went to public schools with no dress code. Fine with me. However, in my retirement I have come to support an orphanage in Kenya. It's a wonderful home for 50 to 60 children and they attend a school nearby. The girls were in desperate need of uniforms of a certain style and color, or they couldn't go inside the classroom. I've seen pictures of girls standing by the open windows hoping to learn along with those inside. Heartbreaking. So I bought fabric and made over 40 dress uniforms in various sizes in the required colors. I still feel stunned that a uniform stood between those girls and an education. I doubt "hand-me-downs" were available as it looked like the uniforms were worn to threads. As a footnote, a church group of friends collected enough money so the orphanage could buy 3 sewing machines and pay for a teacher to teach the girls to sew. They are on their own now and I couldn't be happier.

I think schools should help students who can't afford uniforms. Other than price, I think they're a good idea. Some of the clothing for teens is extremely expensive which puts poorer kids at a disadvantage. Learning to sew is a good skill for anyone to have. I worked with a triathlete who was almost 7 ft tall. He asked how hard it would be to learn to sew, because they make clothes 'big and tall' but not just 'tall'. My oldest GS is so tall he can hardly find shirts with long enough arms.

Thanks for your views ladies I do appreciate them. I too got ridiculed when I was in my teen years. My parents couldn't afford to buy me the stuff everyone else was wearing because they had my younger brother and sister to provide for. My stepdad's mother would go to the thrift store on the local base and get me school clothes. I was always grateful for what she bought, even if I wasn't in the latest styles.

Hi folks- been pretty quiet here on BCO the last few days, but think I understand that too. Whether you are left, right, or in the middle, there is no doubt something major shifted this week. Some are happy, some are sad, some are fearful, others are being unkind.
Loveroflife- I am one of the ACA plan users. I am shopping for a new plan right now and going to do some eval of the ACA choices, but also going to contact someone I know who may be able to advise me about any new business plans for a business of 1. There are many of us freelancers out here in NM, and lots of people use these plans for their healthcare needs. As of last year, there was only 1 business plan that was available through a health plan from one of my client site and going to stay away from that. So I am looking into this and if there are any folks here who are like me, self employed and needing other insurance, it is good to look into this for yourselves. More expensive but no risk of being taken away.

Loverly, yes, my raking is done, but have to clean out my gutters one more time. Never ending chores! I'm thankful, though. I have a warm house, food, and a car to drive. A couple more weeks and you'll have DD home for a couple of days!

I'm off to cook pie pumpkins. I'll then puree and freeze until I'm ready to make my pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. I have my kids for Thanksgiving this year, so decided to host. I love Thanksgiving...can't wait! Tonight my mom is coming over and going with us to a play at the high school.

Hubby got an unexpected surprise this morning. He had taken today off and went to the car wash as the car badly needed it. He got a free car wash because of his being a Veteran. Told me that even though some places were giving veterans a free meal, he didn't need it as a simple "Thanks for your service" means more to him. Going to make him a special dinner instead.
