Adhesive TAPE - help need to find non-allergic

Trickling - Surprised that 3M wouldn't send samples. I'll check w/my friend who orders 3M stuff regularly and get her contact info. They've been very good about sending her stuff.
She did NOT have good luck with the Cavilon - but she was using it in a different way - as a skin protectant around feeding tube hole to keep back up food off the skin. Anyway, she's saved the samples & will pass on to me to try next time I see her.

** Welcome Lily55 Please take at least a little time to scroll through this thread. What works for one person may not work for another. What did not work some years ago on a person may end up working later (alas, also vice versa). Different companies may make basically the same product; yet, a little something in one will enable it to work for a person while the other company's product doesn't work.
In addition to specifying products, you will find many postings here give ever so helpful tips on dealing with a multitude of aspects of dealing with the reality of allergies to adhesive tape. Sharing even the tiniest or seemingly insignificant or isolated aspect or incident can make all the difference in the world to someone.
** EVERYONE Hopefully, I will have completed a quasi INDEX for the products mentioned on our thread by the end of next week. I have found the list to be too long to enter as a post. All I can think of is letting you know that you can send me a private email and I will reply with the INDEX as an attachment.
Thanks to everyone who has shared in any way. Included in this thanks are those ever welcome visitors who look but do not type an entry for this thread. Your presence is felt. Furthermore, feel at home and rest easy: each of us knows how it is to just be able to visit without posting.

MinusTwo Noooope. No sample and I will end up paying more for the shipping (they use UPS) than the "3M Kind Removal Silicone Tape" itself.
I surely hope some of your friend's other samples work out for you.

Bumping this so others may find helpfull information.0 -
Oh my goodness. I can't believe we've had no activity since August. Thanks GramE.
I got caught up w/more surgery I wasn't expecting - axillary node dissection - and then instead of moving to Rads, I'm now doing another 4 rounds of a different chemo cocktail since there was a positive node. UGH. I just carry my medipore tape around w/me. I used to tolerate paper tape for a couple of hours, but not now.
Hope everyone is doing OK and looking forward to a good Thanksgiving.0 -
MinusTwo: Sorry for the additional surgery and chemo. I am glad the medipore works for you. Happy Thanksgiving.0 -
Gram E - Just noticed your VA location and made me think about a Thanksgiving when my son had moved to Virginia. He took me to a wonderful restaurant - old 3 story house where George Washington had once stayed. I'll have to see if he remembers the name.0 -
Yes, I am in Virginia for about 8 years now, moved from Pittsburgh to be closer to my son. I will spend Thanksgiving at the American Legion since my son and family are going to be out of town. We will celebrate at my place Sunday.0 -
GramE: Thanks for bumping. I found it too much to get an index made and since announced traffic to this thread is not so much, I simply let the thread ride.
MinusTwo: You are one special person.
!!! HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE !!!0 -
Sorry - brain fog - can't remember if I already posted or not, but here is what my PS said about allergies to adhesives.
I told him I was allergic to adhesives, because I always was left with red, crusty, raised areas exactly the shape of whatever bandages were put on my skin after procedures.
He replied that some patients actually do have severe reactions to the adhesives used in tapes. For this reason, he doesn't use any. However, he said the most of the time, the redness, swelling, and blistering occurs from the adhesive tape being placed on fragile skin that is already swollen from surgery or other procedures.
The adhesive is actually separating the layers of skin (pulling the top layer of skin away from what is underneath), causing irritation, not an actual allergic reaction.
Instead of bandages, he uses Xeriform strips over the incisions, then wraps the area tightly with giant Ace bandages. He'll tape the edges of the bandages down, but that never touches the skin.
At Exchange, I did get steri-strips, which did not cause me any reaction at all.
Hope this makes sense...0 -
Blessings2011 Makes sense but . . . take it from me . . . sense is NOT a NECESSARY criteria . . .

!!! Happy Thanksgiving Each and Everyone !!!
BTW, I was all set to re-test a whole bunch of tapes over this weekend. However, since the primary care physicians at the university hospital I have been going to for 20 years are no longer on my State's HMO insurance plan (I am a recently retired state employee), I must find a new hospital and doctors. This being the case, my current & very good Primary Care Physician, highly recommended that I hold off and do the experiment under an excellent allergist. So I have my magnifying glass in hand to find a new hospital and doctors.
>>> Also, I am asking everyone visiting this thread to keep on sharing and to push super hard to get medical staff to approach CVS Pharmacy to get a TAPE on the market with the same adhesive as on their over-the-counter: CVS Pharmacy Hydrocolloid Advanced Wound Care Dressing, a latex free over the counter dressing constructed for multi-day protection. Nothing like a deluge of opinion to get things moving.
!! Happy Thanksgiving Each and Everyone !!!0 -
I couldn't handle paper tape and my dermatologist switched me to Vaseline, gauze, and a very gentle bra. When that still proved too much for the fragile skin, I went to Vaseline, no bra, and big cotton shirts. It's messy but my skin is finally growing back. The irritation from the tape was eased by a light protective coating of Vaseline. I hope you get a resolution soon!0 -
Have you tried any of the barrier wipes like SKIN PREP Protective Barrier Wipes? A skin care nurse used it on me when I was having a problem from the tape holding my drain tube in place. It puts a invisible barrier between skin and tape, yet tape still sticks. It worked for me. I hope it works for you!

vaper that's what they used on me when I had my port accessed for 3 weeks.0 -
QuirkyGirl + TN USA +Moonflwr912 : Hi! And, WELCOME as I do not think you have previously posted.
1) Thanks for reminding us about BARRIER TYPE PRODUCTS. I particularly remember a posting by Honeypotpie on July 4, 2012 (6:36 PM) re 3M Cavilon No Sting barrier film.
2) When I type >> 3m cavilon << in the search area of YouTube, quite a few very helpful videos come up. On my monitor , the first 2 videos (3:49 and 3:38 min, respectively) show a nurse in a grayish brown uniform specifically demonstrating how to apply two types of 3M Cavilon barrier products.
Here are links to two of the videos. I do not know if the links will work by posting them here. Personally, I found several more videos also helpful.

(3:38 min) (cream) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X_3JkuXn7U
3) One of the things that came up in my recent exam by my Primary Care physician was the subject of a dry mole-like growth on my left thigh that has been slowly growing. As I stated in my entry of Nov 28, 2013, this Primary Care visit was my last due to a change in my State's HMO plans for 2014. Anyway, my Primary Care physician suggested that for good measure I make an appointment with Dermatology to have the growth removed before my current HMO plan expires. Since appointments were not being made over the holiday weekend, I will be phoning early, today, to make an appointment.
4) I doubt very much that the 2in x 2in CVS dressing to which I referred in this thread's introduction and in my Nov 28 entry will be large enough to do the job - although I will bring some along. The procedure should be a "quick" in/out appointment.
>>>>> I am going to insist that the Dermatology department try the 3M Cavilon cream (YouTube 3:38 min tape). In fact, I will be emailing my Primary Care Physician to see if he can help in making this product available for the procedure THANKS TO the reminders by YOUR RECENT POSTINGS.
5) %%%%% It may be close to 2014 when I do more postings at this thread. I aggravated a neck injury and may have my "computer privileges" curtailed for physical therapy. . .0 -
Trickling - so sorry to hear about the aggravated neck injury. Just one more thing.
I didn't get a sample of the Cavillon yet, but have a friend bringing me samples hopefully before the first of the year.
I do have a product that works for me and may be what Vaper is talking about. My infusion center uses Aplicare Skin Protectant Prep Pads under the 'tape' - Applicare, Inc., Meridien, CT - www.applicare.com. Unfortunately these are sold only in cases, usually to doctors, hospitals, etc and not retail. A case is 2000 individually sealed pads, packaged in 10 boxes of 200. The retail cost is over $500.00 I talked to the company and there's a possibility that a pharmacy may order and break down the case to sell in the box of $200 but I'm sure there would be a mark-up. I'm going to see my dermatologist in January and will try to convince her to buy a case & sell me one box of 200. Or see if she has other patients who would be interested in splitting a case.0 -
Trickling, thanks for all you've done on this thread. Please be sure you take the time you need to heal. We DO understand! LOL0 -
@ MinusTwo What a GREAT IDEA to foster the whole notion of sharing supplies. Patients' Coop???? Can't tell you how glad I am that you found a helpful product which continues to work.
ENDS UP it will be next year at a new hospital (new hospital HMO plan) before I get to see a dermatologist. Current dermatologist is completely booked until February. After all, I am not in dire straits.
?? GUESS WHAT ?? My CVS Pharmacist thinks she can get me a 3 oz tube of 3M Cavilon Barrier CREAM by !!! TOMORROW !!!
I hope to try re-testing on my own before 2014 - even if it means retesting at the new hospital sometime in 2014.
@ QuirkyGirl I forget the medical term for it, but, I used the vaseline and medicine impregnated gauze for quite a while (changing the gauze but not its continued presence) and found out that my suspicions about it being too long a time for such activity confirmed. My skin started to react somewhat like skin which has been a long time in water. If something doesn't seem right, please don't hesitate to bring up the subject if staff doesn't or resists even diplomatic inquiries.
@ Moonflwr912 Yes. Yeeees. I am now signing off for a chunk of time.
Hope you all consider at least bumpty bumping this thread.
LOL to Everyone0 -
Trickling: Wishing you the best w/the neck problems. We'll miss you but we WILL keep the thread going. (right ladies??) Drop in from time to time if your docs allow.0 -
ditto Trickling! Well keep the light on for you..0 -
Bumping for the pre-holiday rush. Thinking of Trickling & all of you.0 -
Bumping for one of the ladies on another thread - Happy New Year all.

*!*!*!* Joining in wishing everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR *!*!*!*
I found Port Washington, WI, on the GOOGLE map, Moonflwr912 . . . Brrrrr with an ARCTIC COLD wave to follow. I don't think Texas is all that warm these days, MinusTwo. And, I'm sure Washington, DC, is hunkered down as well, GramE. Stay warm everyone else.
I am doing OK. I am not in severe pain. I just have to take things easy and commit myself to a lot of focused exercising. I have a bunch of physical therapy sessions remaining and will have to maintain a schedule of focused exercises for neck and back. I have very tight/strained muscles. Some of you will recall that before I retired I was in a situation where I was subjected to increasingly long periods of repetitive movement of an unhealthy nature. I have to be more careful than what I have been, especially when it comes to desk work.
I depend on public transport. When the frigid weather subsides, I will be investigating how I can get an ergonomic chair like the one I tried out in the occupational therapy area. No use my wasting money on nice looking office chairs, which really do not meet my needs. From what I gather the chair will cost around $500. Believe me, when I tried out the desk chair I referred to and was instructed in the best way to use it, I realized I was faced with a big but pretty clear decision regarding what I needed to purchase. The chair will have height adjustable arm rests as well as a sliding device in the back to position for optimal back support in addition to the usual chair adjustments. Get this: in the meantime, I am reclining, yes, reclining in my reclining chair, while somehow balancing this 17 inch laptop. This reclining and swivel lazy boy type chair, which I purchased some years ago, remains the best furniture investment I ever made.
???? What do you all think of letting this thread go into hiatus for a while?
I don't know how long the thread can be in hiatus and still be able to resume with a simple submission as contrasted with all the previous input disappearing forever as a thread. Some of you have been doing a whale of a job keeping it going by bumping. However, it is not an easy thing to keep bouncing/bumping back and forth. Furthermore, even though the very helpful advice which has made its way into this tread is refreshingly good without time limits, the dates of the entries make the thread dated in the usual sense of not being brand new on the scene.
Given that I have my hands full with physical therapy and other pressing personal matters, I have decided to follow my current primary physician's suggestion of holding off re-testing my supply of adhesive tapes and barriers until I am registered at the new hospital mandated as a result of changes in my HMO insurance. The registration will take effect mid-February. My guess is that I will be doing the re-testing in March or April. Therefore, that is a long time relative to my providing any new input.
Okay . . . give this idea some thought before rushing to respond.
}}} I really am holding you dear to my heart and wishing you the best in all your endeavors. {{{

OH NO - I don't want to let the thread go dormant. I recently received some samples of a skin protectant that I plan to try soon. Also I have a friend bring me another kind that didn't work for her husband, but as we all know - each of us is different & she was trying to use it around a feeding tube. The info may be dated, but each recommendation might work for someone. I will be happy to keep bumping at least once a week. Especially since I'll be starting new skin trauma - Radiation.
Trickling - in the mean time, we're thinking of you. Glad you're getting some physical therapy and learning new exercises. Your proposed chair sounds amazing. You're right - Houston isn't very warm right now but I feel guilty even mentioning cold when you talk about Wisc & Chicago. Brrrr. I'd be settled in front of a fire or under an electric blanket for the duration.

Yep it's cold and getting colder. They actually closed schools for Monday already. It's a really dangerous cold. Well see how it goes!
I am with Minus. I think keeping it up on top may help others. But you can take you vacation from here you need not worry about. When you come back you will still be in charge! LOL. Physical therapy is amazing in what it can do. Much love

oops - Sorry I've been falling down on the job. Bumping for newbies since I've seen several discussions of tape allergies on other threads lately. Moon - or anyone else - jog my memory if I forget again.

sure I'll remind you. But who will remind me? LOL

Push up to the tops.

Thanks for keeping this going. I recently had surgery (for stage 1 lung cancer) and had awful problems with tape allergy. No solutions found!
