I don't usually post on this thread, but the whole pink washing thing is just pi$$ing me off.  Our Honda dealer stuck a huge pink ribbon on their website front & centre saying "helping women now".  When I called them on it, they said that one of their staff members lost someone to breast cancer & it was their way of bringing awareness to have a mammo.   They aren't actually helping anyone, they aren't donating $ to anywhere, they just stuck a huge pink ribbon on their site.  GG

i have had enough and need to find a way to let this go. I just un-friended someone on FB and plan to totally get off FB. She is another breast cancer patient but she is posting all these inappropriate things and just going on and on with the fight like a girl, etc.Today she had a picture of a bunch of dogs with pink balloons on their chests like boobs. No idea what the point was. Disrespectful in my opinion, but I think I am in some angry place right now. My husband said she probably thinks its cute/funny.

Had to leave Macys today while trying to find a real bra to wear as they were spouting off over the loudspeaker about breast cancer awareness and bra fittings and "buy your pink pony pin" of some bull crap. Left in tears.

Beth sorry to hear about this.

I'm getting tired of hearing by this product and support finding a cure. Wait a minute, if they haven't found one yet, as long as this crap has been around, doesn't that mean there isn't one? Even my hubby is sure this will never happen. I do agree that more emphasis needs to be put on early dectection and awareness.

I hope these kinds of postings don't pop up on FB.  If they do, I will post this:

I've also seen men on FB "offering" to check their female friend's boobies for them.  Pretty ridiculous.

Julie the last pic is very poignant. Gives me a lump in my throat.

I think Bob Mills pulled their "a restless night's sleep can cause BC" campaign". Now their just running an old ad campaign.

Baker Hughes - an oil drilling company has painted 500 oil drilling bits pink. They're doing their "bit" for the cure. But at least they donated 100K to Komen. http://www.kumv.com/story/23690123/doing-our-bit-...

FarmerLucy, Yeah for baker Hughes. Too bad they couldn't find a better organization than Komen.

Yeah. Most people who know me and have donated money in honor of me, donated to the American Cancer Society. I told anyone who knows me not to give to Komen. I don't like the message they come across with when it comes to BC.

    Ladies
    – have any of you heard of this organization?

    Breast
    Cancer Research Foundation

    http://www.bcrfcure.org/

    It
has a maximum four-star rating on Charity Navigator.

    Any thoughts?

    The
wording on their home page (Blog) was especially poignant to me:

This October, join us and turn awareness into action!

    It all
started in 1993 in Evelyn Lauder’s kitchen. Over a cup of coffee, Mrs. Lauder
    and her dear friendDr. Larry
    Norton
    began a
conversation that, over time, would changethe history of breast cancer. Recognizing the power of
research and its potential to change the lives of millions of women and men,
they realized that to tackle this disease a new approach was critical.

    They
believed research was the way forward and founded BCRF on the belief that
funding research was the only obstacle between breast cancer and a cure. Today,
we remain committed as ever to advancing the world’s most promising research
because we see its ability to transform lives each and every day. Evelyn’s
mission has become ours, and we want to make it yours.

    Everyone
has the power to play a role in eradicating this disease. This October, we
invite you to #BeTheEnd. Be the end of fear. Be the end of hospital visits. Be
the end of side effects and needless suffering. Be the end of loss. The end of
breast cancer begins with each and every one of us.

    Start a
    fundraiser.
    Share your
story.Make a donation.Spread the word by sharing your commitment to BCRF with
friends and family on your social networks
    . Honor someone you
love who has been affected by breast cancer. Inspire your friends and family to
    #BeTheEnd.

    No
matter what you do, when you support BCRF, you support research. And when you
support research, you are making a lasting impact in the fight against breast
    cancer.

    Until
the number of deaths from breast cancer is zero, we will not stop.

Join us, and help fuel the research needed today to save lives
    tomorrow.

Everyone can be part of the solution. We are all part of the
    cure.

How will you #BeTheEnd of breast cancer?

Hi Blessings -hope your head is better. I did a evaluation look at BCRF on the List thread. The link is in the topic box, but I'll put it here. There is a quandary about BCRF. Ruthrb did and evaluation look at SU2C. I wouldn't hesitate with SU2C.

Tell me your opinion of both after reading on the list page?

BCRF called me trying to get me to donate, they were told very politely that I recently gave a donation to the local cancer center in my area.

Glad to have found this thread.  With it being NFL Sunday and all the pink wear my stepson asked me "How  do you feel about it". I said "I wish that every NFL player, coach or whoever wearing pink today would write a check to a reputable cancer organization to help find a cure, cause, prevention or provide assistance from their multi million dollar incomes instead of making a fashion statement wearing pink.  They almost all wear something pink, but I bet they all don't write a check!"  Yes, it causes awareness, which reminds me of the old saying "Even bad publicity is publicity".

Sas - for some reason that link seems to be broken (at least according to my browser). If you can give me the topic title I can probably track it down.

    Thanks!

They even put pink ribbons on the footballs.  Do any of you feel bad that breast cancer gets so much more attention than any other cancer?  September was childhood cancer month and I saw one little thing on my facebook about it.  It must be hard for people suffering from other cancers.

Just started a new thread - "Michigan - Breast Cancer license plate."  I pasted a news article I just found there.  Read it and tell me what you think.  Not sure how I feel about this yet.  Other than "seriously, I now have to see pink ribbons in front of me at stop signs?!"  Sigh.

At least the one for Moffitt in Fl is non specific, they research ALL cancers there.

Bayoubabe - being a fellow Michigander, this is the first that I have heard about this, and I too will have to think about this one.

I think my DH said it best - I just read him portions of the article and said that Rick Snyder's wife is a breast cancer survivor too - his response "Oh isn't that just perfect timing for her to make this announcement one month before the election."  Sad but true.

    bethq-

I'm a dog trainer now and since Felix each month my friends actual post the picture of the dogs with pink balloons on my FB page. It freaking pisses me off. Each year I have to tell them that...If I didn't have my own business FB page I would retreat for the month of pinktober.

I refuse to bow to wearing pink as it is all so overdone these days. Many vendors selling " pinktober" items never post where the donations are going. Beware if they state 10% or less going to BC.

Personally I will be wearing purple for domestic abuse awareness campaign.

    Peace.

What stinks is that pink was my favorite color. Have so many pink tshirts, etc. Now if I wear one to workout I feel like I have to wear a sweatshirt over it!

bethq, I relate to liking pink. Lots of pink in my wardrobe (get lots of compliments). The other day I removed the predominantly pink items of clothing from my everyday closet (some have just a tiny smidge of pink, that's ok). Took out so many items, not much left. Won't be wearing pink this month or buying pink clothes any more.

Went to local Walgreens yesterday, usually big pink ribbon displays, lots of pink. Nothing special yesterday and I searched the store. Not even pink lids for pill bottles. Progress.

I just try to take a deep breath sometimes and remind myself that some people take comfort in wrapping themselves in pink, doing all the related events etc. It's not for me though.  I think I've got all my family scared to even mention any of it around me, lol.

I don't feel bad that breast cancer gets attention, particularly as attention doesn't necessarily = / = funding or research.  Just because a whole crap load of people are playing FB games or posting cutesy slogans or wearing a pink ribbon they got at some dollar store doesn't mean that real changes are going on.  That's slacktivism.

It does make me feel bad though when BC and BC patients get the backlash because people have pink burnout.  I've read plenty of disheartening comments on social media or on articles about how us BC patients are sucking up all the funding that should be going towards more "worthy" causes and that we get all the attention / have people lined up down the street with casseroles and offers as soon as we're diagnosed.  Like I said, backlash. People can elevate their own cause without bashing my disease.  All the more reason to point out to people that just because pink ribbons are everywhere on products, this isn't necessarily translating into actual research dollars.

There is overlap too in research in many cases too I think along with medications etc.  I was given the same chemo that my father was given for his lung cancer (taxotere).  I am currently taking a medication that was initially meant for men with prostate cancer.

edited to add.... a story I heard early in my own treatment sticks with me every time I see breast cancer events and walks etc.  I remember a woman who'd had someone walk in her name, and had it plastered all over FB etc leading up to and after the event.  This someone reportedly never visited her friend and barely had contact with her during treatment.  I know this is not the case with most people, or I hope not, but that stuck with me.  Sometimes its about attention, and that's wrong.

I hear you on that, Beth. I have a favorite pale pink jean jacket that I've had for years - it's a great color for our dreary Springs when you really need a break from wintry colors and I wear it a lot in the Summer and Fall, too. Right now I don't know if I'll ever be able to enjoy it in quite the same way again; I don't want people to look at it and wonder if I'm making a statement about bc. :(

I wear pink the other 11 months of the year.  I like it, think I look ok in it.  It's just in October when it's shoved at everybody, from everywhere, that I have problems. Last year I had a dark pink shirt on, with a sparkly Maltese on it some fool woman asked me if it was for bc awareness.  I said no, it was a DOG, and I didn't like Pinktober.  Shut her up, but I don't need that aggravation so it's put away for a few weeks.

Spookie, I agree. Pink is a great color on me. Wore my pink T and sweater on 9/30. It's in the wash today and will be put away until spring. Warned my family away from the pink stuff.
