Ducky ... great to see you.  Your granddoggies are adorable.  I want to hug each and every one of them.

I'm having a bit of a struggle since my Maggie died three weeks ago today.  The first week after her death I was in San Diego all week babysitting my grandsons ... so I've really only had 2 weeks to grieve.  It really hit me hard when I picked up her little pawprint tin with her remains in it yesterday.  My dilemma is my brother would like me to adopt his 4 year old yellow lab.  Coincidentally, her name is Maggie too.  I'm torn and don't know what to do.  My brother's family is moving and they can't take yellow Maggie with them.  Maybe Tank needs a buddy ... I just don't know.  He doesn't seem too depressed since I'm with him all day.  I'm not sure I have enough love to give to another dog right now.  So ... I'm putting off making a decision.  DH is fine either way, but I know he would prefer only one dog.  We've always had at least 3 at a time, so it's kind of weird with only one dog.

Thanks for any insight you can throw my way.

    hugs

    Bren

I'm so sorry you lost your little one. Never easy.

But if you didn't take bros dog, what would happen to her? She may help heal the hole in your heart from your loss. I say go for it.

When we lost our Abbey I was very against getting another dog. My other dog seemed really depressed though and we thought it would help. The old dog HATED the new dog when we brought him home. We went through over two months of growling and snapping. We all ended up falling in love with the new dog - the old dog included. But, we never stopped loving or remembering Abbey. Even though it was difficult at the beginning, we never regretted getting another dog. Sometimes a new dog can help heal your heart.

Spookie ... I don't know what will happen to yellow Maggie.  Once my brother's house sells and they have to move they're going to have to find a home for her.  I'm pretty sure they won't take her to a shelter.  Anyway .. I wouldn't let that happen, as I would take her before I let them surrender her to a rescue.

Slowdeepbreaths ... Right now, I'm glad to only have one dog.  It just seems overwhelming right now to bring another full grown dog home.  I know we would never get another puppy, as we've talked about being without a dog in about 10 years.  Right now with my hubby gone all week, it's very difficult for me to go anywhere for longer than a few hours, and I think I would like that freedom before I'm 80.  It's a logistical nightmare just getting to see my grandsons in San Diego once a year.

But .. even with all that said ... I won't let yellow Maggie live in a shelter.  I'm just not ready for her yet.  Thanks for all the encouragement ... I really appreciate it.

    hugs

    Bren

Even before I lost my Aussie, Vulfie, I knew I'd have another dog. And my old poodle was on his last legs. So when Vulfie was gone, Rooney was so old he didn't know, or care he was an only. A few months later Spookie came home. Rooney wasn't thrilled to be having this pest puppy bouncing all over him, but tolerated her. Then Rooney went to the Bridge.

Diva that she is, she was quite happy being an only. But we weren't. Kris was being fostered by my groomer. We saw him, 3 days later he was ours. 2 dogs seem to work well for us, and if we travel, it's by car only, and they go too.

The house just seems soooooo empty with out a dog or 2.

We had bought a Boston Terrier for my husband 2 months before he died.........he had pancreatic cancer and was only 57.

He always said when he reitrned he would get a Boston and walk it along the beach at our summer home.....my daughter decided he was having one right away........he was a beauty.......he loveed him for the short time he got to enjoy him.

I knew the breeder, and she was getting rid of 2 of her Bostons which were related to our Bossy, who lived for 11 years...............she was moving into an apt. and could not take the dogs.........she took them to the vet, and after weeks called my daughter to tell her they were there, and if we woanted them we could go get them and she would pay for the vet bill and their care while we had them, with the understnading that she would take them back when she gotinto a place whicxh allowed dogs.

My daughter had got a Boxer after Bossy died, so there was not way she could take 2 more dogs, so I said "I will"........One was 13, and the other her nephew was 7 years old...............after about a year the 13 year old died........but I had the 7 year old till he was 13, but blind, deaf, and had dementia...could not let him go, but finally I had to.I kept him too long, for my sake, not his............

This is a picture of my little Mark....who I still miss today........image

Jackson is crashed out under the kitchen  table napping. He does that a lot during the spring and summer. He must love the coolness of the kitchen floor.

I love all the pictures!  I just got back from walking Tank in more lower fields.  He loves it down there and thankfully, he can be off-leash.  He might chase a squirrel for a little bit, but he never goes far.

Here's a pic of Tank in one of my lower fields.  We have five acres and I mow quite a bit of it.  It's great cause I can just walk Tank on our own property.

Spookiesmom ... is your Spookie a Maltese?  I've always wanted a small dog ... somehow have ended up with big ones!

Mommyof2 ... Tank is napping now too.  He won't go outside unless I go with him.

Ducky ... I think I waited too long to let my Maggie go.  I knew things weren't good, but had no idea just how bad they really were until I saw her x-rays the day we had to put her to sleep.  I only hope so much that she wasn't in pain in months before we let her go.  I knew she was having problems breathing, but didn't know the extent of her lung damage.

    hugs

Yes, Spookie is Maltese, that pic was her 3 Rd bday. Halloween. She was just back from groomer, she's 5 now. I've had big and small dogs, loved them all. Don't think I could handle a big one now.

Mom. I had all my carpet taken out, replaced with ceramic tile and laminate, mostly for the dogs comfort. Easier to clean, they REALLY like the coolness.

Bren, Tank is a lucky dog to have all that property to explore.

    Adorable pups Spookie!!

We have carpet in our house and I can't wait to replace it someday. With a cat and two dogs, I am a neurotic vacuum-er.

Bren................Mark had cateracts for sometime, but it took a while before he went blind.....then I found out he had glaucoma, and unlike "humans", dogs get pain from glaucoma......they gave me medicine for him, but it affected his bowels so bad it had to be stopped...........

I could not let him go which was cruel of me........I was thinking I was doing the right thing by keeping him alive.......I know after I finally put him down that the only one I was thiking about was myself, and how my grown kids would talk about me for not testing him further.

He was as you can see in his picture wearing a little doggie diaper which I had custom made for him....I had 4, all in different designs.......lol......

I could not change or move anything in my house because he knew exactly where all the furniture was, and got around ok, but if I moved as much as a chair, he would bump into it..........then one day I couldn't find him....I was frantic thinking he got out somehow, and I knew if that was the case he was gone for good.

I searched and searched the house, and finally found him in an upstairs sliding door closet where I kept ;my washer and dryer, sleeping on a small pile of dark clothes...........he was black, so even though I had checked the closet 3 times, I missed him because he was also black.and had his little white stripped turned away from the door.

I so wish I had him today......I am 80 now and it is so lonely.....my husband died at 57, but I was also younger then, and had things to do........work, grandkid babysitting........but now no one needs me...........a dog would be wonderful.......

But it would mean fencing in my back which drops down to a stream since I have moved to a ranch home......Mark had a huge "lead" which I would put him on and he could run the entire year which was massive........even though the walking of a dog would do wonders for 'me, I find it difficutl not being able to hang on to something...................in the stores I use a cart........to steady me..the Meds play hell with your balance...............

All the dogs yo see belong to my children or grandchildren (mostly grands)........and I didn't show all of them to you all.......LOL......many, many, pooches.........

    Did not mean to ramble.......sorry......hugs

Oh Bren......the one thing offered to me when Mark got glaucoma was to "remove his eyes".......that would stop the pain, and the vet said "he can't see anyway, so what does it matter if you take that route.

Sorry.....no can do...........remove someones eyes..........that was not going to happen, plus he was 10 years old when this was offered.......

I know of no one who would take that path.......

I wish you could get a dog Ducky. They are such great company. Maybe you can use a cane?? I know it's difficult to rely on canes and wheelchairs, but I often have to use a wheel chair when my DD or DH wants to shop till they drop. I just can't keep up without one. My sister uses a cane and it really helps her balance.

Ah,,, Ducky,, I wish you could get a dog too. They are such good company. Do you visit the grand-dogs a lot? Is there a way to put a long lead in your yard for the dog?  I know people who have a line stretched between two poles,, like a clothesline,,, and attach a dog's long lead to it for the dog to run back and forth.   Or maybe you could fence in just part of your back yard,, not the whole yard,, just enough for a dog to do his business?  I take Ava on walks, but she has a really small fenced in patio where she can go to relieve herself or lay in the sun. It's really small for a dog of her size,, she definitely can't exercise out there,, but at least it is a potty/sunshine area.

Jackson has slept on the kitchen floor during the warm days like we have been getting ever since he was a puppy. Its like he has some sense of when the warmer days of the year are coming and goes from his dog bed to the kitchen floor. We don't care if he does it as long as he's happy. He also loves ice in his water during the warm days.

When I put the ice cubes in their water, Princess will play with hers til they melt but Jackson will only let them stay in the water til its cold and then he takes them out.
