Made it through surgery- lumpectomy, and 2 lymph nodes removed so really sore but really thankful!

Problem: Idk if they didn't give me post operation instruction or if I was too doped up to remember... Dr office hasn't called me back so idk if and when I can take a shower etc

Chaosrain- Glad to see that you made it through your surgery!! Hope your surgeon has called you back by now. As I recall, after my lumpectomy, I was told to make sure I took the pain meds on schedule whether I was hurting or not. I was also told not to shower for 48 hours. I also remember using a ziploc bag of ice that was placed in a U shaped fleece travel pillow case . ( BTW I took the pillow out.). i was able to place that ice filled pillow directly on my skin. I also remember being told to wear a front zip sports bra 24/7 for several days. Take it easy and rest if you can. Wishing you the best.....

Chaos - yippee! Home and now healing. Melrose gave good advice. RN should have sent you with written info on care. Keep on top of the pain meds the 1st few days and take a stool softener. No shower 48 hours and you may remove the first layer of bandages...not steri strips when you shower.Bruising and swelling will ease ice ice baby! Fingers&toes crossed oath results and clear margins&nodes. Rest:)

Terri - Beautiful beautiful boy. Congrats ...send extra GM power :D

Jen - all your bags are packed & leaving on a jet plane...here we go:)))

    Vic - fun weekend:)

Kelsey - 13&19 fun times and Bday bash to come! Go mom!

Holli - watched Day Tripper wow so much to do down south in San Marcus...also realized I've missed out on hang gliding over LBJ, but did hit Pie Happy Hour :D

    Linda, Candy, One4bemi - thinking of y'all

Pup is struggling with his collar of shame...poor guy...7-10 days crash bang...

    Happy Weekend!

Today had an awesome thing happen and a heart breaking one.

Awesome - we had a home visit from PINK HEALS Hays County. Huge pink fire truck pulls up to the house with sirens blaring. Gave me hugs and pink roses. The kids got to sit on the fire truck. It was like a pep rally for me!! It was so great. We have been in such a slump with all the set backs I've had. So this was an amazing gift!!

Then a few hours later I found out I lost a friend to this awful thing called cancer. Here is some info on her and how I met her. I had only known her since April but she impacted my life in unbelievable ways.

    --------------

just found out my friend Chris I met at HEB passed away on Tuesday. Her funeral is Sunday. I'm heart broke. I know she is in a better place and pain and cancer free. But it still hurts.

I wrote about her in one of my blog posts and mentioned her at CBS. I was praying on the way home from one of my check ups during chemo after talking to my doc about recurrence rates and survival rates. I had on my head scarf when I stopped at HEB. She approached me out of no where. Never met her before. She prayed with me and told me that only God knows how long we have on this earth not doctors or statistics. She was truly an angel. I got to know her a little more over the past few months. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011. Fought it 3 times. She always had a smile on her face. She was 54.

    Hi ladies!

Checking in from my weekend paradise. This place is a definite candidate for a weekend getaway for all of us. I am bringing info home on pricing, etc. They have cabins that can sleep up to 20! Some have pools and hot tubs. Many have fire pits. Boats, kayaks, jet skis, paddle boats for rent. I still want to check out other places in Bastrop and New Braunfels.

    Role call!

Terri - Adorable baby boy! Oh, to snuggle a baby again!

Jeni - Leaving on a jet plane, don't know when I'll be home again. So jealous! Have a great time and watch the infection!

Holli - So sorry for the loss of your friend. Love the pics with the pink fire truck and the family. What a treat. The sweet and the sorrow all in one day. Sigh! Hope you are feeling well.

Cindy - I want to zip line! I am scared of heights, but if I can hang glide, I can zip line. Ready when you are! Hope hunter and hubby are doing well.

Chaos - glad surgery went well. What I use for ice packs are the surgical gloves filled with alcohol and water, then freeze. They don't freeze hard but are kinda squishy so you can mold them to fit any area. This has been our go to ice pack for everything: wisdom teeth, my lymph node biopsy, kids sprained ankles. etc. Maybe you can join us on our next outing, whenever that will be.

Kelsey, Linda, Candy - checking in on chemo treatments. Hanging in there okay? We are all sending healing thoughts your way.

Zelda - hope you handled work okay. I will see you soon!

Candy's friend - Becky? Betty? How are things going for you? Let me know if you have any ILC questions I can answer.

I am sorry that we have all found our way to this place, but happy that we have each other. I can't imagine this stage of my life without you ladies!! Hugs!

Vbishop - I highly reccomend zip lining. I was so afraid and with my lung issues and low strength it was difficult for me. I almost gave up halfway through (this was in August). But I got encouragement and help from the group I was with and I finished the course. It is an amazing feeling to finish. To overcome. Just wear pants. The harnesses aren't very flattering :0).

chaos- those ice pack Vbishop was talking about are great. I have some I used in my hands and feet during my Taxol treatments. But instead of surgical gloves, I had a friend who has one of those food sealers. So the packs were sealed shut on all four sides. I loved that they were soft frozen. That way they mold around body parts.

A cabin and hot tub sound fantastic.

Well I survived the 8 girls in my house. I thought we wouldn't make it the night as girls and their drama happened. But we made it. The dogs loved it because not only were they allowed upstairs but they got to sleep in my bed. It was the only way to make sure they didn't get into something they weren't allowed.

As for chemo the numbing of the fingers and toes like to happen as well as the feeling like I have growing pains all in my legs.

Glad to see everyone seems to be holding up. This cancer crap isn't fun. But I am glad I can I through this journey with you all.

Frisky - how was your appointment? Did you receive any answers...grr this BC. Do you raise llama in the hill country...there are several ranches out in Horseshoe Bay...wondering. Hope all is well with you and your girls.

Holli - how cool! The fire engine what a special gift...your kid's smiles say it all. And the zip line...whoa! So sorry for your lost of special friend. You two had a divine appointment&friendship...HE is so awesome like that...trusting Him to comfort during this loss.

Kelsey - yippee! You survived the sleep over :))) with a few furry friends too. Ask your team about care for neuropathy...and be assertive in receiving. Ugh, chemo SEs :(

Vicki - ah! Sounds like a great retreat spot...now will we take our families or have them join us for one of our days...so theming to dream about for 2015!

Terri - more sweet baby pics...how are you holding up super GM:)))

Chaos - fingers&toes crossed for path results! Speedy healing :)))

    Candy & Linda - thinking of you:D

Got to take conehead for a walk...poor pup crashes into everything.

Hope everyone is doing well :)))

and Jeni we are all in that suitcase so careful we don't want to miss one bit of our trip across the pond. Hope your flight went well and LE stays under control...enjoy!

posted by Holli on Monday, November 10, 2014

As you all may know, we have been fighting cancer, it's treatments, and side effects from the treatments for a year now. Ronnie told me that he was mentally prepared to make it through June, but he hadn't prepared for after that. Neither one of us prepared for the lung issues and set backs. Like I said before, December 12 this year was supposed to be my last surgery (it is also Ronnie's birthday. And before cancer ever entered our lives , my graduation month from Texas State). Now we will be heading into our second year of cancer "after effects" with 3 more surgeries looming ahead.

Many of the ladies on my online support group that started chemo at the same time I did and radiation at the same time I did are now getting their final surgeries. I'm happy for them but a little envious too as I want to be wrapping up the physical healing so I can begin the mental / emotional healing. It's strange, but it's difficult to accomplish both at the same time. I'm in limbo until I'm able to do so.

I'm often asked if I'm cancer free. Well, I'm not sure. The lung issues, to me, have taken precedence over everything else. My medical oncologist told me he'd consider me cancer free. I asked "what next" and he said... "Now we wait".... In other words we "hide and watch" to see if it comes back. From what I understand the first 5 years are the most crucial. But other than the chest cat scans for my lungs, I really haven't had any other tests to see if I am NED (No Evidence Detected). I want to believe I am but I want proof. I'm afraid...

I have several follow ups in December so I plan to ask a lot of questions.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record... We are so very weary. Still dealing with financial/insurance issues. Still dealing with steroid withdrawal and pain. Still dealing with Ronnie's health issues. We are weary.

Then when I start to think about how we need to change our lifestyle. I get so overwhelmed. I have to help myself and my family change how we are living. We want to keep cancer away. How we eat, our activity level, our stress level, getting enough sleep all needs to change. It's enough to stress me out ... Only I would get stressed out thinking about ways to try and not get stressed out! :0)!! Thank you to 3 wonderful ladies who have gently spoke to me about different natural ways to live (Mardee, Shalom, and Tracy). I thank you for allowing me to ask questions but also for not overwhelming me.

So... As you trudge through all of that mess... You will understand why what happened last week was all the more special.

On Friday November 7th 2014 I received an amazing surprise. With sirens blaring (my poor neighbors ... Hee hee) a red fire truck and a pink (yes I wrote pink) fire truck pulled up to my house. About a dozen people, including two fire men in pink fire uniforms, come up. They all hug me and hand me pink roses. I get to sign the pink fire truck named Bailey. It is like my very own pep rally. It is truly amazing. At such a down point in this journey it was a blessing and such a spirit lifter.

The volunteers who are a part of this organization are incredible. You can see in their eyes the joy they receive in giving back. They genuinely care about the cancer patient , survivor, caregiver, loved ones...

What I truly appreciate is that all the funds raised for the Hays county chapter of PINK HEALS stays in Hays county. It stays local!! It is the community helping the community. It isn't buying a pink ribbon key chain that says proceeds go to breast cancer research only to find out that only a small percentage ( or in a small amount of cases none at all) actually goes to support breast cancer. Pink Heals is the real deal.

If you check out their face book page Pink Heals Hays County, You can see the videos of my home visit.

    https://m.facebook.com/pinkhealshayscounty?tsid=0.... source=typeahead

If any of you feel called to donate to any organization regarding cancer, I can personally vouch for 2 and PINK HEALS is definitely one of them. Look them up.

Thank you Pink Heals for all that you do! Thank you for making an ordinary Friday afternoon something Extraordinary for my family and I.

I'll be posting some pictures too in the photo gallery.

I'm always making jokes about how ppl with expensive cars are the worst drivers.. AUDI drivers the highest on the list of offenders...

guess what our free rental upgrade is???

well, this time for sure- it is true!

1st time driving in England- on the wrong side of the road , and it is a stick- so that is on the left.. good thing in high school i used to change gears in the passenger seat while my boyfriend smoked a bowl, or i would not have this skill! Loopy

Instead of "baby on board" we need a sign that says "stay back- texans behind the wheel!"

Very moving ceremony at 11am. They blew whistles from WW1 after the bells rang, for the beginning of the moment of silence. we then placed paper poppy petals on the alter of the bombed out Coventry cathedral

then we went to Stratford-upon-Avon to see Shakespeare's town!

Jen', looks like you are having fun!:)

Vicki, where is this place that you stayed?

Cindy, how is the remodel coming? Is Hunter still a cone-head?:)

Candy, good to hear from you. Hang in there. The hair loss isn't easy, but you'll get through. I looked at photos of my hair growing back, the other day, and I remember how excited I was to see a few sprouts. Wow, it changes fast! I use an organic shampoo with Biotene in it...not sure if it helped or not.

Chaos, I hope you are healing well!

Kelsey, Zelda, Linda, frisky, check in when you can!

We are all in different places in our TX's, but I am so thankful that we found each other!

    Hi everyone!

Shewolf - thanks for sharing your bad as well as the good! The pain we feel for what we've lost is real! Doesn't mean we aren't grateful for so, so much. You are brave.

Sisters-in-hair-loss - thanks for sharing! I think I'm ready to have DH shave my fuzz this weekend. I'm tired of looking like one of the Barbies I tortured playing beauty shop years past!

Keepthefaith - thanks for keeping track of us, and for the beautiful photo! Congratulations on baby Joseph! My premie baby Joseph is a tall, handsome 18 year old! Where did it go? Enjoy him.

friskyllama - glad you found us. You are brave and have a lot to share.

vbishop - thanks for telling us about your retreat and giving hope that these days aren't far away! Vicki, it sounds great.

RMlulu - you always manage to keep up with! Hope Hunter pup is done with his cone of shame, and that DH is feeling better.

Chaos - welcome to the other side of surgery. Everyone is giving you good advice. You got this!

Jeni - I want to travel with you! You are amazing for sending us the photos and taking us with you! You are obviously feeling better and making the most of this! Can't wait to see where you end up next!

I've been reading but not contributing, lately. The SE's hit hard last time. The oldies and a new one - my actinic keratoses (basically non cancerous sun damage spots on my legs, arms and chest) usually flat and skin-colored lit up like a Christmas tree. Bright red, raised and oozing, painful, scabbing over - really lovely! So glad it got cold and I could cover up. Turns out the chemo is burning them off, along with some basal cell cancers on my face, from the inside! Thanks, chemo! I've got a steroid cream and some heavy duty ointment, so now I'm nice and oily, too. " I feel pretty, oh so pretty,..."

Good news is 4th and final AC and Neurlasta this week, Thanksgiving week off, then 12 weeks of Taxol. So glad I can continue to learn here and move on to some more threads for help. I would not want to do this without y'all. Hoping for a peaceful weekend, Lind

Jeni - Ooo who we are having a blast following your adventures...so luv the pics! Where is Doc Martin:))) I'm going to get my princess tiera ready for the castle! Enjoy

Linda - congrats on the final 4th round and then a Thanksgiving break:))) so much to be thankful for in the midst of the it all...hang in there!

Candy - hope it's a good weekend...you and Linda will be sporting the buzz together...I wear my wig just to keep my head warm...Aromasin SE for me is hair and bone loss...Zometa may help the bones but my hair just keeps coming out...thinking of you!

Holli - I'm still smiling thinking of the pink fire engine and the smiles on your crew's faces :))) gosh what those loves mean to us...priceless.

Chaos, Kelsey, Terri, Vic, Zelda, Frisky...et all...thinking if you and hoping you are warm in front of the fireplace sipping your green tea.

Tomorrow is our big adventure. Conehead goes for his first airline flight...he's done good today without the cone of shame on. No interest in his stitches...so I think he will be ok in his airline kennel in the belly of the plane for our flight to LAX. Not sure how this mama will be once he gets checked in and is out of my sight...separation anxiety yikes!

Looking forward to seeing family and then all the cancerversary tests and blood work. Gosh, will sound so good to say 2 yrs out cancer free...come on 12/17!

High tomorrow is 75 sounds perfect

    (((Hugs)))
