Viewfinder, thank you for the compliment. I now use either my iPhone or iPad to take pictures. My daughters tell me I look like a tourist if I use my Canon point and shoot. 🤷🏼♀️😂😂 And prefer I use my phone when we on vacation together. They feel I set myself up to be robbed if I use the iPad. What’s a mother to do

Was waiting for a storm to clear the Tetons so I could get a good clear photo as we were there during fire season when I realized the clear weather over and behind us. The contrast intrigued me.

And finally got to see a pronghorn. I read C.J. Box and he always mentions them.

    Viewfinder, what adorable dog pictures!

Nancy, I'm sorry you've been so unwell and I'm glad you're on the mend. I pray you keep feeling better. Lovely photograph of the butterfly!

    kathindc, lovely photos!

bandwoman, so very glad you're feeling better and that your lung issue was most likely an one time event. Your photo of the butterfly is stunning, just perfect.

I'm ashamed to say that I had never heard of the migration of butterflies so I looked it up last night and read about the fascinating life, life-cycle and migration of butterflies.

    kathindc,

While the photo-taking abilities of many camera-phones are quite impressive, especially one's that cost over $1000, I still prefer to use a real camera for many, many reasons. I carry an advanced compact camera in my pocketbook almost all the time.

The world of digital cameras can be very confusing because there are so many types and sizes. Most digital cameras do very well in good light, but low light photos come out much better if the camera has a large sensor. Here's a summary of the main types of digital cameras.

Compact - Point and shoot cameras; small in size and weight, advanced models can have many bells and whistles but generally have very small sensors and are limited in Focal Range.

Bridge cameras - mid to large size, often called super-zooms - have fixed, non-interchangeable lens with wide to telephoto zoom lenses. Small to mid-size sensors

Digital SLR Cameras - large but can vary in size; take interchangeable lenses, including those with varying focal lengths (fixed and zoom)and quality. Typically has the largest sensor.

Mirrorless Cameras - has no mechanical mirror, which makes it smaller than a DSL. It can use interchangeable lenses and come with varying sized larger sensors.

Here's a comparison of the size of my DSLR and advanced compact camera. I also have a Panasonic superzoom: 25-600mm equivalent lens.

This is the same DSLR pictured above including three interchangeable kit lenses

The is the same camera shown above. I rented a 400mm lens for a week and you can see the size comparison. I had so many people stop me and ask about the lens. Great conversation piece. Tack-sharp images.

    Hope this helps a bit.

this camera stuff is all sooooo interesting! I’m really learning a lot from you guys.... ViewFinder: what is the brand of your “advanced compact camera?”

  • viewfinder
    viewfinder Member Posts: 201

april1964, I'm a canon gal but, through the years, I've owned about five different brands, 16 digital cameras in-all.

My small camera pictured above is a Canon Powershot 100 but if I were replacing it today I would buy the Canon PowerShot S120. Same camera but it has built-in Wi-Fi that allows you to wirelessly transfer images. Or the Powershot S200. I like a camera that I can easily take everywhere with me, tucked in a purse or pocket.

These cameras are still available but they are usually high priced because that's what some vendors do with popular older cameras. The best thing is to call Canon and see if you can get a refurbished model if available.

There are numerous advanced compact cameras so you may want to look at other brands if you decide to get one.

If I was buying again (I'm not) I'd get a compact camera with a 1" sensor.

Here's a great camera feature search.

First I was a leica girl, then a rolliflex girl then nikon then canon. But I gave up all my camera equipment and went digital. No more interchangeable lenses. I guess I just got worn out. I keep a small Canon in the car. I also have bunches of bridge cameras so I leave one in the trunk. I now use a card reader more than wifi to transfer photos to my phone when I am not home. But I am a casual photographer and simply enjoy taking photos.

viewfinder and SoCalLisa: thank you so much for taking the time to help me understand this... the smaller camera does sound appealing... you can just pop it in your pocket or purse.... I’ll look on Facebook marketplace to see if there is anything there.

Thank you for the nice comments on my butterfly which unfortunately I can't see anymore or anyone else's photos either. What has happened. My desktop has Outlook and I can view the photos but now my laptop which I exclusively use for my photos no ones photos appear. Is anyone else experiencing this?

View, I wanted to see the photos of your cameras when I had more time tonight and they are gone. So disappointed.

I too have several brands of cameras but basically I am a Nikon person now and have invested so much money into their equipment there is no going back now. The mirrorless camera may be my next purchase but the Nikon ones are so expensive. I can use my Nikon lens with an adapter if I do end up going that route. I took a Macro Boot Camp with Mike Moates a couple years ago and he was saying behind the scenes that mirrorless cameras were going to be the future. So I guess time will tell. They are going to have to come way down in price before the masses will buy them.

I was able to get out for a short time today after a dentist apt and got some fall scenes albeit many from my car. I'll share some later.

    Nancy

Thank you all for the discussions about cameras. Unfortunately I use my iPhone6 to take most pictures because I always have it. When I want to have better photographs I use a Canon Powershot SX260 which is much better than my phone. Although I will say that I have seen some fabulous photos from a Galaxy phone. My other camera is a Canon Elf 300--this replaced my Canon Elf 100 which I lost. Loved that camera.

No photos in sight again. Not sure if is is a BCO glitch or what. It is not only this thread too.

And a few seconds later I can see them.

Seeing if these will post. These photos initially did not post. Crazy stuff happening. These are as small as I could get in my photo editing software. Now you see them, and now you don't.

Can you see the egret off the right?

I can see the photos on this thread. I use a Panasonic DMC-FZ28 and I find it quite good even though it's old. It's a bit more bulky than a compact camera but I like being able to choose whether to open the flash or not and it takes much better photos than my phone. The new cameras keep increasing the number of megapixels but it's more important to have a bigger sensor. I find 2 or 3 megapixels is big enough for displaying photos on my computer but photos to print large need to be more megapixels. I find the following website to be very helpful in deciding which cameras would be good or not. You can look up reviews by brand or type or a specific camera: https://www.imaging-resource.com/cameras/reviews/

Hi Nancy, I can see your photos and a little white bird to the right of the river.

basically, a bridge camera is a mirrorless camera.

    Nancy, I love your butterfly.

april1964, Facebook Market Place may be a good place to look for a camera.

You can also consider buying a factory refurbished digital camera. In most cases, the returned cameras were unused or hardly used at all. Their prices can be substantially lower than the same model purchased brand new. Sometimes older refurbished digital cameras are available.

Refurbished cameras are retested and recertified, and then resold by the manufacturer. Consumer protection laws prohibit refurbished items from being sold again as new.

If you go this route, make sure it's "factory" refurbished, with a parts and labor warranty that can range anywhere from 90 days to up to a full year.

Make sure to ask about such things as warranty length and exactly what it does and does not cover. If you purchase a refurbished camera from a retailer, check who actually provides the warranty: the manufacturer, retailer itself or third party. Get a written copy of the warranty.

Refurbished models should come with all the supplies and accessories listed on the carton such as wrist strap, USB interface and AV cables, etc.

    bandwoman,

Those fall pictures are incredibly beautiful! Yes, I can see the egret.

As for pictures sometimes not showing. Try emptying your browser cache, then relaunch the browser.

You can also try deleting temp files on your computer, which I do about once a month.

You use the Windows RUN utility.

Type in "temp" (without apostropies), then delete the files and empty your trash.

    Next, type in: %temp%

    Delete files and empty trash.

Thank you ladies. Your comments always boost my confidence.

View, my laptop is running on little hard drive space now and I frequently empty my temporary files and have done so recently. I will try your method as well. The way things were playing out last night it was an on and off display of photos. I am on my desktop now and it was not displaying either and not allowing me to post a picture on another thread at all. I think it is a BCO issue possibly as their requirements for pixel size in posting are extremely small. I believe they say 400 pixels. I know I post according to file size not pixels so they may have an automatic delete in place.

Lisa, yes, my bridge cameras are mirrorless but they do not fall into the category of what I have copied below. This is the mirrorless camera I was speaking of that has the interchangeable lens.

"A mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera, frequently simply mirrorless camera, also called DSLM, and sometimes also called EVIL features a single, removable lens and uses a digital display system rather than an optical viewfinder."

I will have to check and see if any pics appear today.

Bandwoman, Another thing you can do when you do Disk Cleanup, if you don't do it already, is to click on "Clean up system files." Select the files to delete. Sometimes there are 1-2 GIGABYTES of Windows Update Cleanup files that can be deleted, making additional space on your hard drive. It's safe to delete them if your OS is working fine after a Windows Update. I usually do this about a week after a Windows update.

As always, I make a restore point before doing an action like this. As an aside, if you have programs saved in your Downloads folder, don't check mark it.

Thanks View. I am going out with my camera in a few minutes. I am searching for this waterfall that I could not find yesterday. I am armed with maps today. Still trying to take it easy and have not resumed my lap swimming yet.

I will try those things later.

I finally found the waterfall but it is not spectacular but the foliage around it was very fall like. You can see it in the distance.

I agree that the foliage is more impressive than the waterfall. Of course, our local waterfall just broke the record for amount of water and the rivers are flooded. There's a log jam threatening to take out a major bridge on a major highway. Fingers crossed they get it broken up.
