barbe, I just returned from British Columbia and spent a few days in Kamloops. Enjoyed the heritage train center. I love the geometrics of trains and their beauty in black and white.image

Moonflwr, you are so right, enjoy what you are doing and avoid being too self-critical. I know in my photography, it is not usually the photo product that I enjoy as much as being in the moment, in a particular place, and then remembering the feeling of that experience. Of course, a photo I like is a also great reward.

I'm new to art. Was too busy working and it was never my thing. I admit willingly I am not very creative, but it is fun trying. This is my attempt at my friend's dog and my youngest curly-hairedcat. (Watercolor and ink)

Thanks Smurf and feline. I'm very self critical and know these are amateurish (I spend a lot of time on FB Watercolor groups, so know this) and these tend to be illustrative, more than "art." I do love painting cats though and have attempted many. Gracie was my only dog. I never really know what I'm doing with watercolor. It controls me more than I control it. I'm on a waiting list for the local oil class (we don't have a lot of choices where I live). I hope WC and oil inform each other or I might just get mixed up!

QuinnCat. You are actually very good. I'm a member of Art Tutor, an on-line art school. They have classes in drawing, watercolor, oil, acrylics, pencil, etc. You can join by the month or the year. They are based in Mercyside, UK. They have some classes you can do to try them out. arttutor.com Might be a good fill-in until you get into the classes you want. I mostly do watercolor and take a class for seniors in the community. I never could hack the smells associated with oil painting, but now they have water-based oil paint that doesn't need the smelly stuff.

Quinn, art is clearly 'your thing' now. I expect you will be commissioned for other art work and people do love to have great images of their pets.

Quinn I would not call those amateurish, i would call them very good. There will always be people better than you, as well as way less good. You don't have to be of professional standard to have a flair for something. Clearly you can draw, and clearly you can paint. Nerdy

I have a 1.1 honours degree in graphic design. I did 4 years in art college, back in the pre-digital days. I have never been a painter though, always need a tighter medium like pencil, charcoal, pen. I am in awe of people who can paint.

LOL - I'm in awe of people who can draw feeling feline......pencil, colored pencils. I don't get it! Rendering...I have no idea how to do that.

Wren I may have come across Art Tutor in my search for online classes. Do you have a link? I did sign up for one online class, but you know how it is...finding the time (I have lots of time, but a block of time!). She is out of UK and does botanical art. Billy Showell. Very nice production values, easy to listen to, but it is botanical art. I think she has taught me a lot and just doing her classes has enlightened me about realistic painting and using small brushes. I just need to apply myself. I bought a subscription for a year and I"m slightly halfway thru in time, but haven't put a dent into the number of tutorials available.

Magiclight - what i notice all of the time is people who don't paint themselves, mostly have very low standards about what I would consider adequate, good, or absolutely outstanding. That sounds awful, but I see so many people peddling pet portraits that I might have hired once in my life, but not now. I'm not saying I could do any better, I couldn't, but I have a better idea of what it takes to produce a watercolor painting. My aspirations far exceed my talent. There is a watercolor artist (there are many) that I'm just in awe of. How does she do that (technically speaking) >> from Turkey. Can't find her name (again):

Quinn I'm a perfectionist with my own art and craft and know I shouldn't be. It's not about perfection. Nature isn't perfect.

Watercolour is a very unforgiving medium. Your work is great. Be proud.

Quinn, Sorry I don't know how to post links. It's just www.arttutor.com. I know what you mean about blocks of time. I would have more if I didn't have a computer or if the computer couldn't find solitaire. I'm too spoiled to play it with cards anymore.

Quinn, not sure if all non painters have low standards when it comes to art, maybe they just try to offer a kind word to all artists.

Oh, gosh, it sounded horrible what I said Magiclight. I was specifically referring to people purchasing pet portraits. I was probably thinking of myself and a couple of people asking me to paint their dog or cat. My internal response is "are they kidding?" So I was mostly referring to myself LOL. You are right, mostly people are being gracious, but I've also seen comments about art that gets a range of reactions from "I love it" to "That's art?" and the response that gets is "There is art out there for everyone's tastes and my taste may not be your taste." I need to remember that.

My principal art is that I am a violinist. Can't post a picture of that! So here are some pictures of my hobby, cross stitch. I have many more but this is just what's available on my computer right now.

Nice work, Fiddler. I don't think my eyes can still see to cross stitch. Needlepoint has bigger holes so I've gone on to that.

Quinn, you are so right about taste in art. If I had 17 million to spend on art, Warhol's soup cans would not be a consideration (investment aside)Winking

OncoWarrior - is that 2D or 3D? I was once interested in felted wool, but never pursued it. I've only seen 3D items. Very cool - cows are wonderful!

It is 2D with the texture of the wool, so also 3D, I guess. Like a relief . Hope I got that right.

Yes I would like to see it in person, too.

Look her up on facebook and get more info.

Onco, I've been fascinated by artists who focus on farm animals so thanks for sharing Abigal Colors work. When I did a Google search I came up with other works by current artist Donna Crawshaw and 20th century Edgar Hunt. Most fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
