For hydration, sometimes, what do you think of organic fruit juice cut with water so it isn't such a big sugar hit? I figure since purple grapes, cranberries, pomegranates, and papayas are anti-cancer in various ways, those are the ones to drink. Having changed treatment, I'm really looking forward to my pomegranate juice again, now that there will be no question of interaction with my drugs.

I think I remember reading about a study of exercise and cancer that agreed with your consultant. Moderate and vigorous exercise reduced risk, but really hard training (like competitive athletes might do) did not.

Well, another productive day for me. 20 mins of stationary bike followed up by the gym. Managed 1000m rowing machine. I don't go crazy as I hurt my neck and shoulders by pulling the handbar toward me too fast. Went slow and easy and stretched after. 20 mins on the treadmill afterword. Left the gym and walked home for another 20 mins. Was such a sunny day, could not resist. Am going on a picnic this evening. Looking forward to seeing my brother and his family. Should be good.

Shetland, I am so glad we don't have to do high intensity exercise to achieve benefit. I still like moderate for myself. Most intensive I may get is if I crank up the incline on the treadmill for about 30 secs several times through the workout. My heart goes up and stays challenged. I do the same on my exercise bike. I am satisfied with staying 50 - 60 per cent of my max heart rate. I am losing some weight so it must be working. Admittedly, weight loss is not my primary goal. QOL and reduction of fatigue are the primary reasons I am enjoying so much. I also like eating whatever I like as well and having cravings again. I missed those when recovering from the brain radiation.

Hope everyone else is having a decent weekend.

    Thanks Z,

One day at a time is all I'm aiming for but I'm doing well so far with more good/ normal days than bad.

Interesting point about hydration. During my chemo infusions I take on plenty of fluids. What I find surprising is that I am usually the only patient who does so.

ok so I haven't been doing much, still dealing with lymphedema and infection in my arm. Hoping the doctor can get me into the lymphedema clinic this week. You all continue to inspire me!

Gracie - good to hear from you. Your lymphedema was on my radar ... but infection? I am sure explained it but ... are you on antibiotics? Are things improving? Concerned ...

And what is with the wait to get into that clinic?

yes they did put me on antibiotics and I think they have helped some...not only a long waiting list for the clinic, but found out today they dropped the ball and no one called...so now I have to wait until the 15th!!! Sucks!!!!

Oy. hugs. keep up with the lymphedema self care. it works as well as anything ...

Have you considered asking to be put on a waiting list for a cancelation because an urgent condition? My experience with the lymphadema clinic near me is that people cancel a lot ... flakey cancer patients....

Z, lol at the flaky cancer patients!!! That made me snort my coffee hahahaha!!!

The docs scheduler said she told them we would take a cancellation if I could get an hours notice because of the drive. Hoping that happens!

Ping that scheduler a couple times to show her you are not another flakey cancer patient and you mean business.

Seriously, we are a flakey bunch. I used to feel I had to be the responsible and reliable one ... not any more.

Gracie and Z, I concur about us being flaky! Here is am with no reporting in for almost two weeks! How flaky is that!

I have been so busy with work, but this week I am trying super hard to get the exercise in. I even got up early to go for a run! I've never ever done that before, but I was so glad I did. I also got up super early today toteach a free yoga class at one of the lakes in Minneapolis. Such a great start to the day, but now I'm soooo sleepy. We will see if I can get myself moving early tomorrow, but if I need the sleep I will take it!

thinking of you all even though I haven't been around much!

Yeah, Mara. I like to crank up the incline, too. I do it by walking where there are some small hills to go up and down. I think that must be the original interval training regimen of all our ancestors! I keep picturing a tribe on a long trek, going up and down hills, stopping for berries along the way...

I often think it's like having a job or second job, DGHoff, just trying to get the right food, sleep, exercise, etc. Add appointments and research to that.

Just looking in on the Stage 5'ers again. I am sorta proud of myself for getting out this morning amd doing 2.5 fast miles walking. I felt lousy yesterday, as I had a biopsy of thoat/base of tongue early in the a.m., and was headachy with a sore throat and super tired all day. Slept a lot and went to bed early. Oddly, I woke up much better today, hence the walk. I think about those statistics Z shared, and I do believe that keeping the circulation going by walking can only help support healing. I am going to take a nap now, but plan to do some little tasks later this afternoon. Then it will be time to make supper. Hugs to all, Mam

    Hello Ladies,

Its been a while since my last post, been feeling up and down lately.. Was able to take a long walk on the beach with my dog Maggie! I was also able to do a 60 minute yoga as well as 60 minutes water aerobics.. I will keep trying to incorporate small workouts throughout the day to keep me moving.

Great to hear from you MameMe and Ronnie. Glad you were both able to move. Makes me feel better when I can do it too.

Walked 20 mins to the gym, 30 mins on the treadmill. I went for the interval settings. I usually manually do things but today allowed the machine to decide. It was good. Did another 1000m on the rowing machine. All this done by 930am. I felt good the rest of the day. I don't usually get everything done in the morning BUT it will be stinking hot and humid for a few days. I will have to get started in the morning to maintain my pace.

    imageHello Stage V Ladies!

Work is messing with my exercise schedule these days. My eyes and brain are the only things getting a workout. Decided to do a long hike twice on the weekends since there are 500 hikes in the area. My grandson did the math and says if I do one every day I can get 3/5s of them completed during my six month stay.

Hiked Ute Valley Park today and hit 10,000 steps. Had to take a nap :). It's was around 90 when I got home and locked myself out of the house. $125 dollars later I was back inside putting groceries away. Oh well...met the neighbors since I had to use their phone to call the locksmith.

Now to decide on the Sunday hike ...

    Let's keep going!

Go Kathryn! I am getting a bizilion steps setting up a vacation rental. I get completely exhausted and then I look at my fitbit stats and realize ... well its definitely the cancer because that didn't used to be hard, but that was still a long day.

Oooh Lwrite, that looks lovely! Glad you are able to enjoy the hiking around there! Sorry about getting locked out though!

Z - Sounds like a lot of work to get a place ready to sell. And not fun work. I think that's pretty exhausting even without cancer, so kudos to you.

Wow, Mara, you inspire me with your activity all before 9:30. Nice work!

I read something the other day about 180 minutes a week being especially helpful for advanced cancer patients, so I'm doubling down on my goal to make sure I reach that and do something at least six days a week.

Plans for an inside workout today due to rain, and then I teach a yoga class this afternoon, so I'll for sure get the workout in today!

Congratulations Illimae! So glad to hear from you! Let us know how you are doing, good or bad. Our exercise routines are up and down. It's just the way it is. And staying motivated through those dips is what it is all about.

I am going to drop one daughter off at camp today and then hit purgatory for some mountain biking with the other. I am sure this is not a good idea ... so get ready for hearing about some back pain!

    Hey,

Did a workout video with my daughter today thought some of you might remember this blast from the past: "Buns of Steel" with Greg Smithey... I personally have been doing this video for over 20 years! One of my favorite sayings is "remember the baby ones" or squeeze those cheese burgers out of those hips!...

    Too funny,

    Ronnie - that's a gas.

I have been working hard setting up a property I purchased as a vacation rental, so no walking, ab stuff or yoga. Lots of activity but no exercise. Now I am on travel, mountain biking and a lot of driving and strange beds ... back hurts more of course. Hope the project will be done by the end of the month and I can get back to my routine. Definitely feeling it ...

Z - I know what you mean about the "strange bed" syndrome. I travel 2 weeks each month for work. The bed is never as firm as my select comfort settings at home. So many hours of lost sleep! It's hard to separate the SE's of the cancer, the drugs, and the bed.

    Hello Ladies,

Hiked for two miles at a new location in co Springs this morning and then decided to stop at a Celtic fest. Loved the pipes and music. Beer and whiskey in the morning seems like a bad idea but what do I know? I think kilts look better in novels or movies. Me in a bikini=weekend warriors in kilts...don't even want to know what's under there .

Gotta get back in the pool...or hike after work. With 500 hikes in the area six months won't be enough time. Stay strong ladies!! Happy solstice week

Well, I slacked off all weekend.  I came home from a business trip early Friday morning.  For the rest of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I didn't do any concentrated exercise, missed my step goals, didn't do my yoga, didn't eat any yogurt, and had a few glasses of wine.  Sheesh!  Today feels more Monday-ish than usual.  Time to get back in that saddle.

The hiking sounds fun but so does the slacking, lol. Moderation is a bit of both, right?

I'm happy to report that I'm finally back after that last chemo sidelined me. I'm still bound to flip flops due to chemo toenails, so no walks in the park or neighborhood but my Fitbit stats are looking good.

Way to go, Illimae! Those stats look great. You should get bonus points for having to do it in flip flops.
