New Want To Play A Word Game

If we do it at night, we probably could see amazing stars.
(Curve, are you an engineer? I am:))

Oh yes, of course! I will start first.....*staring at the view*....

@wahine, No, I'm not an engineer. My degree was in Landscape Architecture, but I graduated in 1978 and because of what the economy was doing a few years later, I ended up not being able to find a job in my own field only a few years after I graduated. I had learned a few rudiments of land surveying as part of my degree, and remembered enough trig from high school to pass the employment exam for the entry level position on the survey crew, and eventually got hired. I think I started work a year to the day after taking the exam. Then after 17 years of surveying I took a different job with the same employer to get out of supervision and indoors. So, I was a "Civil Engineering Technician"--doing Civil-related work but not having a degree or license in Engineering.
@zogo, yes you will certainly see some stars up there at night, and I think some of the other surveyors even saw the Aurora Borealis.
The stars and the scenery were the enjoyable PARTS of that assignment. And the boat trip was OK too, except for hauling out. I wouldn't have minded it so much if the monitoring work had only take two or three days. It was being away from home for a whole week at a time that I disliked so much.0 -
Ahhh....landscape architecture....thats why you have such good ideas for your yard and garden! I took the "master gardener" course a few yrs ago through the extension service, and we would learn a lot for a few weeks, then volunteer back to the community. BUT it was over 20yrs ago and I really only remember a few things that I learned. I had a groupon for a landscape consult that I used a few wks ago, and she gave me some good tips that I had not thought of. So I am trying to incorporate the ideas she had, gradually. Its awesome you have all that knowledge!!! I really need to get on my old work pants and do more work outside...my back limits what I can do, and for how long, so things do take longer now. Then I pay for it at night!! But I love to work in the yard, and we do have a huge yard with lots of big tall trees (oaks, magnolias, willows), fruit trees (figs), leyland cypress trees, large flowering shrubs (gardenia, camellias, roses), dogwoods, tulip tree, and tons of flowers and greenery, plus lots of zoysia.

Unfortunately, I have forgotten most of my landscape architecture. I haven't practiced the profession for almost 30 years, plus I got my degree in California and now live in Washington, so it is too cold here for many of the PLANT species I learned about in school, even if I remembered them. Many of the ones used here, though they would grow in California, were not well adapted to the climate there. For example, rhododendrons and azaleas are hard to grow in many parts of California because they want acid soil, and the soil there is generally speaking alkaline. So you have to coddle them and prepare the soil with acid additives and put things like spent coffee grounds around them to keep the pH right. And since the water is often alkaline too, they may never really thrive no matter what you do. But here in Washington, some varieties of rhododendron are so easy to grow that they are planted on freeway embankments!

Oh I know....when my mom moved from Hawaii to Alabama she had to learn about all different plants, then she moved to Tacoma and it was a world of difference there! I just went outside and "air-layered" my good huge gardenia, and my good tall camellia...my mom taught me how to do that years ago and it is so EASY! Now to wait till the roots sprout so I can have my 4 new plants. I did that to a branch on my guava tree, and it was a couple of months ago, so maybe at the end of this month I will "peek" and see if the new roots formed on that branch. Don't want to cut it off and plant it till I can spend a lot of time watering it. I forgot so much of what I learned too, would hate to end up on a plant panel and have people expect me to answer questions!

I took hardwood cuttings for the first time last winter, from a climbing rose at my mom's house. Only one out of four or five cuttings rooted, but the ones that did grow are already blooming! Speaking my mom's house, it sold the first week it was on the market. Woohooo! I don't think I'd mind being on a panel, at least not if I knew the answers to the likely questions, but lots of people would rather walk the PLANK than speak in front of an audience!

Curve, did you root them with rooting compound, and just put them in the soil, or did you "air layer" them? Whenever I have airlayered, the roots have started that way and it is amazing to see, but it does take a few weeks. I would much rather jump out of a plane than have to speak in front of an audience!!! Love skydiving!
So glad that your moms house sold so quickly! AND that the roses that rooted are already blooming!

I have NO plans to EVER go skydiving! Wahine, you are one brave chick. Have you done it often?
Speaking to a crowd is no problem though. That's how I met my DH. It was a room of (mostly men) engineers from across the country and even the world. He kept raising his hand and asking me questions, I think to make me notice him. Well, I did and the rest is history.

I just have done it once, for my 62nd birthday last year, and LOVED IT! (My late DH was a JumpMaster in his National Guard Special Forces unit, and it felt like he was up there with me). My DH nervously watched from the ground, and I think he was worried I would end up coming back to earth with a splat on the ground. We went up so high, he couldn't even see the plane. But I do admire you being able to speak in front of an audience as I have always had trouble with that. Neat that you met your DH that way!

I so admire both of you: Wahine - sky diving and Jane speaking in front of crowds! I do neither Let me put a different SLANT on the skydiving thrill. My DB found out learning to scuba dive we has a condition where small bubbles form on his lungs; this can only be discovered by scuba diving or sky diving. It's hereditary so my mom made my other DB and me not to try either.
Wahine, sounds like you have a beautifully landscaped home!
Curveball, so happy it sold really quickly! Hoping it was at a good price.0 -
@wahine, they were hardwood cuttings and I didn't use anything on them, just trimmed off the old leaves and stuck them in the dirt. Maybe more of them would have taken if I had used rooting compound, but I had a couple dozen cuttings in all, so I wasn't at all anxious to have a high rate of success.
As for me, I am scared of heights. NO WAY would I ever jump out of a plane unless there were flames licking at my heels, and I'm not sure I could do it even then. I'd probably just become paralyzed with fear. Ugh! another thing I don't want to think about, like yellowjackets!
The remodel is still coming along. The floor sanding is mostly done, and although there will still be some unevenness and dark stains, the wood will look a lot better than the tired old strange colored carpet that used to be here. Once the floors are done and the baseboards put in and painted, it will be time to start unpacking. I asked the contractor today if, once the front of the house is done, he will be able to seal off the kitchen completely so cats can't get in there. He says, yes, that can be done, so I will be able to get the two of them out of kitty jail. That's going to be one huge boarding bill! Unpacking will be a monumental job, but if I split it up into smaller tasks and tackle them one at a time, I'll get it done eventually.
Yesterday I was finally able to get the last piece of my replacement power cord. I got home quite late, so I didn't set up the computer until just now. Hurray! I can do boldface again!
(edited to add:) Oh no, I forgot to preview and 2TA slipped in there before me. To answer your question, my mom's house sold for more than she was asking, so she's giving a big sigh of relief. She was biting her nails a little before it went on the market. Not really, but it's the best I could come up with on short notice!

Curve, that wood will be so nice! Are you having any tiles installed also?
Oh 2ta, how scary to discover that problem! I only knew about maybe getting "the bends" from scuba, but didn't know anything other than a bad landing or chute not opening, from skydiving.
edit: Ok, now I need to do an edit too....I noticed curve might have missed 2ta's post, but was working on curve's word, which has now been changed! LOL. OK, now to work with "nails". Hmmmm...ok, got it. Even though the work is coming along for you Curve, I bet it sometimes feels like things are moving at a "snail's pace", to use some slang.

@ wahine, the bathroom will have heated ceramic tile on the floor. The house had electric baseboard heat when I bought it, and it doesn't look like there ever was a baseboard in the bathroom, so I bet it would have been pretty chilly taking a shower in there during the winter. I think there is one more day of machine sanding to do. Then they will have to switch to hand tools to get into the little angle at the corner of each room, and around the doors and other openings. And I need to decide whether to have some replacement wood put in at one of the most damaged areas. It looks like water damage, and the boards are not only stained, but separating from the piece next to them. But the replacement wood isn't going to match exactly either. But now it is time to go to the store and pick up a few things so I don't have to cook in this hot weather (it was over 90 today), and then start on balancing my checkbook after dinner.

Oh Curve, this is so exciting! As the work progresses, it is starting to take shape. I can just imagine that gleam in your eye when you see the completed project!
0 -
And how wonderful to cook meals in your new kitchen!
(hey curve, my DD just mentioned today that she may be interested in studying Landscape Architecture. Are there any jobs out there for that degree these days or is it still tough?)
0 -
Especially if you get some good deals at the grocery stores! (Do any of you "price match" at Walmart from other stores ads? Our Aldi has great specials that they always run out of, so then we take the ad to Walmart. This week it was 29cent mangoes, which would have been 97cents at Walmart....so Walmart let us get all we wanted, for 29 cents ea!).
Jane, I noticed a couple of recent grads have started their landscape design businesses here...and I guess to compete with existing companies, they signed up with Groupon. Thats how I got one to come out....it was half price. BUT it also is good advertising.

@2TA, anything I could tell you about the job market for landscape architects would be thirty years out of date. Once I started working for the City I never looked for another job in my field. There were a few openings with the Parks department after I had worked on the survey crew for a few years. That might sound like an ideal opportunity: get back into my degree field, but without losing my benefits & so on. Unfortunately, the available openings were all bond funded which meant they could disappear at completion of the project the bonds were paying for, so I never seriously considered applying for them. I was un- or under-employed for more than two years before I finally got that job on the survey crew. It was a truly miserable experience and at that time was too fresh in my memory for me to be willing to risk being unemployed again two or three years down the line.

Groupon is a great way to get good leads for your business. I am always happy when my favorite restaurant has one listed!
0 -
I agree, sometimes you feel its a real "steal". That's how I took a stained glass course, as well as my skydiving. I also like restaurant.com, but haven't found many restaurants listed in our area lately.

I used to do stained glass, Wahine. I still have a supply of copper foils, leads and glass. Maybe when winter comes, I can get back to it!

I am sure what I did pales in comparison to what you have made! I just did one panel, and it was fun, but I didn't really find anywhere I want to hang it. I have a half round hummingbird/leaves panel above my sink, but I bought that one. I do hope you get back to it, its nice to do something totally unique and handcrafted.

Just stopped by to say HI.....before my coffee

sheila888, did you have an apple danish with your coffee?
0 -
Even if I plead with you to give me a bite of that apple danish. Do Not under any circumstances let me have one. I need to take off these few pounds that August brought me and start on the road to a smaller me.

I'll be on the plane in 17 days

Are you going on a trip, Sheila? What kind of plans do you have? Can we come, too?
0 -
Will you visit foreign lands, or are you just going a little way?
0 -
Sheila and I might both end up sandy, if we have some beach time, as we will be on the same island! Sad part is we will miss each other by THREE DAYS!!!
0 -
Yes Zogo...Last minute trip...everyone can come
No foreign lands but far enough i could be on a foreign country
Oh Wahine so sorry will miss you there
