Do you think premier athletes have too hectic of a schedule to make a longer commitment or is it a network/ratings thing?

it probably has to do with sweeps month and maybe conflict with other shows. And maybe is a way to keep cost down. Lots of the old timer professionals arent in the mix this season either. Probably can pay the lesser known ones less!

Btw, I dont think Keo was too happy Jennie had a problem with her first song she was to dance to and they had to start all over in the middle of the week. But I dont blame her one bit. Most always they, try to match the music to the celebrity and this time it was an epic fail on the producers’ fault. Shame on them!

Here's what I found about the short season:

Fans of "Dancing With the Stars" who feel like they waited a little longer than usual for the show's return this year aren't wrong, as the series was pushed back when it came to a premiere date. Now, they also have to deal with a season that is significantly shorter from a usual run as well. However, there are legitimate reasons behind the show's scheduling change.

Tom Bergeron revealed during the Season 25 finale back in November that the series was coming back for a shortened, all-athletes run in the spring, though a premiere date was not given until later. ABC confirmed the series would not return until April 30, and that the season would last a short four weeks—ending on May 21, the same day that the "American Idol" reboot is scheduled to come to an end.

It has been believed that ABC's pickup of the former Fox singing competition was why "Dancing" was pushed back and received a shortened season overall. "American Idol" debuted on March 11, around the same time "Dancing" usually begins its Spring run, which seemed to cement ABC's decision to try and give the show a prime timeslot.

In addition, the fact that the season was meant to feature all athletes meant that the network was likely planning to wait until after the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. That has since also proven to be true, with four athletes from those games—Jamie Anderson, Chris Mazdzer, Mirai Magasu and Adam Rippon—all competing in this new season.

Pro Keo Motsepe, who is dancing with former Olympic softball pitcher Jennie Finch Daigle in the new season, has also discussed the shortened season, telling Closer Weekly that he believed the show also opted to shorten things simply because the network wanted to make sure that the concept would work, and they also didn't want to push the cast too far.

"I think the athletes we wanted to have, they can only do so much. I think the show is also trying to see if the athletes season is going to work," he said. "They didn't want to do a whole season and have people be like, 'Only athletes. Are they gonna be good?' You never know. I think It's gonna do amazing. It's trying something different and new."

He also revealed that he thinks it will be a great season because the athletes will all bring their strongest game to the competition and that he and the other pros competing will have to work even harder to make them shine.

"I think it's an amazing season, to have all athletes. I think for all the pros and I, the pressure is on because there are no actors or anything—it's all athletes. I think the competition is going to be so high and expectations from the viewers will be so high. In normal seasons, when you have 12 weeks of shows, you can help them grow and build them up."

Thanks for the article explanation, Ruth. Still, 4 weeks? They could at least have added two more.

Well it still doesn't matter because popularity still plays a part - Kareem should never have made it past week 1, great guy but horrible dancer and I hate that the voting opens at the beginning another nod to popularity as opposed to watching the dancers then voting - which I still do anyway, and buying the rights to American Idol cost them a fortune so budget certainly comes into the play as well, and the way they've done that is horrible as well same voting tactic and rushing everything, getting rid of two at a time.

Yep, money money money is the real reason behind everything, they just don't admit it. They don't want viewers to see them as mercenary. I heard American Idol, viewing is down. I never have watched it in any season. And that bit about Keo saying the producers didn't want to push the cast too far? That is a bunch of baloney. When you have world class athletes, they know how to train and their physicality is not their weakness ever. Altho I do see where some people want more of a celebrity showcase of contestants. I love the athletes.

Nope. Looks like next Monday, the 21st will be the finale & it's only 1 hour. Sad

"I want to reassure people because people are a little frightened. We're coming back April 30. It's going to be four weeks. It's called 'Dancing with the Stars: Athletes' … and we're going to have 10 couples," Inaba said. "It's like a real season, but it's just tight, it's compact, it's competitive."

"Dancing" conjured up this truncated season to make room for ABC's "American Idol," which currently airs on Sundays and Mondays, and will cede the latter to "Dancing." The two shows will share a finale night on Monday, May 21, Inaba revealed, with "Dancing" airing a one-hour finale, instead of a two-hour one, leading into the "Idol" closer."

Oh yea, we are getting short changed on this quick season! No fair!

Spoiler alert! Read no further unless you have already seen who heads to the finals!!!

Ok, let me say that it's no surprise Tonya is still in the game. People tune in to see how good or bad her performance is, so they make sure to advance her. Even if she is not the most deserving to be there. Because its about ratings/money! Not that she is awful, and her tribute to her dad was very moving. Plus, I watched the movie made about her, I, Tonya, and see very much how she was victimized herself in many ways, and had been a young woman with amazing athletic skills. The press really played up the good girl/bad girl thing between her and Nancy Kerrigan, whom I also think is amazing, for ratings and the public ate it up. I could go on and on, but will move on....

Adam, well, he is a sure fire bet to win the whole shebang. His dance in the birdcage was one of the best in any DWTS show, ever. The concept, we'd never seen that before. Len did have a point about the spikey movements, but it was still brilliantly choreographed and performed. When it was announced he moved to the finals, Jenna's reaction was a bit much. I mean, they were at the top of the leader board, so the over the top display of excitement seemed a little out of place. I notice they always announce the sure-fire contestants moving on first, and was in no way surprised his name was the first announced.

Josh was amazing. His tribute dance was glorious. He is so different from Adam, yet it is hard to say who's style is better. I loved how his brothers surprised him at the end of his dance. It was wonderful. If the season was longer, we might see cracks or improvement in he and Adam and could better tell who is the right champion.

I did love Chris's dance, and would have been happy to see him in the finals. I never cared for Jennie, just way too bland and not a good dancer either. Mirai did not seem to have the sparkle last night that she's shown previously.

Never cared for the dance off side by side things. Yes, a one hour finale is crappy! I guess its better 'n nothin'!

The dance-offs are too quick to even tell which of the pair is better, although I liked them better when the top scoring team got to choose who they danced against and the other team got to pick the dance style.

I'm glad KerryAnn said that she hated the 4 week format. It really doesn't do anyone justice or allow anyone to grow......or develop 'cracks', as you said Divine.

Anyway, I was glad to see Jennie go, she just didn't have 'it'. Chris is one who I think would have kept getting better given more time. Mairi is very, very good technically but her personality just doesn't have the 'sparkle' to bring the fans in. She came off as kind of snobby. Tanya, I think, dances very well and is a compelling figure. Her dance last night was beautiful. Josh.....yum......strong, graceful, gentle.....be still my heart! Adam and Jenna are so connected and perfect. It looked more like a ballet. I don't suppose Jenna has ever had anyone so good to dance with before! I would be perfectly happy with either Adam or Josh as the winner.

Great analysis, Ruth, and I concur. Jenna’s dancing is breathtakingly....well, I can’t even find the right descriptive term. Almost jaw dropping at times. I am thrilled she has a contestant so good that her own skills are maximized thus giving us the very best in entertainment. That short dance she did with Meryl and...I forget the professional....well, it was the best thing I ever saw. Perfection. She is the female Derrick Hough. I will go look for it on Youtube to watch again.

I hope everyone has finished watching before logging on. I am happy with the results; although I really hated Adam's last dance, which did nothing for me. It wasn't fun, or poignant........it didn't leave me with any feeling whatsoever. Tanya's dances were good. Josh's were GREAT! He got my last votes.

About the season as a whole.....what a totally crummy format. A one hour finale. No pictures in the practice rooms during the final rehearsals, no lead up to announcing the winner, again the western states get cheated out of a vote etc. etc. etc. Extremely disappointing!!!!!

Ruth, what happened to our fun show?!? After watching that speedy hour finale, I was left feeling very cheated! The season started with great potential and then ker-plunk! I hated Adam and Jenna's freestyle. It was one of the worst or maybe the worst freestylr from a winning contestant and such a terrific couple that is one reason I felt so cheated. The music to that dance was horrible, all this drumming and no nice sounds. Awful.

I did not feel that any of the dances were polished. The judges' comments often rang hollow when they lavished all the praises. Tanya's freestyle was fun but lacking. Josh's was okay but not great.

We didn't have enough time to invest in the couples. No funny banter or comedy, just quick quick quick.

    MEH!!!

P.s. love your new avatar pic, Ruth!

I was busy & it was about 10pm before I remembered it was DWTS night, so missed on out the live voting, though the end result was what I wanted anyway. I agree it's unfair with the live vote to leave out the west coast viewers. I'm glad though that they announced at the end of the show that in the Fall they'll be returning with a full season of the regular format.

ABC's hit reality competition show Dancing with the Stars returns with an all-new season of dancing MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2018 8|7c! The DWTS Season 27 premiere kicks off a night of glamour, fun, and, of course, unforgettable routines in the ballroom. The full season competition kicks off with an all-new cast of celebrities, who will be paired up with the show's pro dancers and brave the dance floor for the very first time. They'll be judged by the panel of renowned ballroom experts Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli, as well as voted upon by viewers. While all the stars will go on a transformative journey, in the end, only one star will be crowned champion and win the coveted Mirrorball trophy.

Dancing with the Stars, produced by BBC Worldwide Productions, will return with an all-new cast of celebrities ready to take on the competition and hit the ballroom floor, in what will be another season full of surprises and stunning dances. Hey! Its that time again! Well, I didn’t feel like I knew most of the people on this list. I looked up an article and saw some faces to go with the names and I know about half of them. I’m very excited to see how Mary Lou Retton does. One of the women contestants is blind. And I’m glad we are back to a full season!

This is the last season for The Big Bang Theory which is a huge favorite of mine. For some reason, they are starting out the season on Mondays at 8 for a few weeks, and I plan to watch it. Then at some point it returns to Thursday. I can tune in to DWTS half an hour later this early in the season and not miss much.

No, Ruth, it’s not really worth it! Some young blonde was voted off, and now that I think about it, the first one to go is usually one of the worst anyway. A few dances were good, and there are a few contenders, but they’re just getting started.

    I thought tonight was fun.

Demarcus-I like him. He's light on his feet but I wonder if how much taller he is than Lindsay is eventually going to be a drawback.

Danielle- very brave, but I don't see her getting too far in.

    John-surprisingly good

    Nancy-I don't think she'll go very far

    Alexis-lovely

    Joe-no

    Tinashe-unusual but very good

Milo-really good and fun, fun, fun

    Mary Lou-very nice

    Juan Pablo-very good

Evanna-good, I didn't like her as much as the judges did

    Bobby Bones- nutty andfun

    Haha, Ruth: “Joe-no"......I agree!

There are too many this year who I don't know, including professionals. The newer profs want to break out all the bells and whistles too early in the season. I think you need to build up to all those lifts and showy moves.

I did love John's routine, tho I think its more the dance and theme suited him more than he's a good dancer. Nancy McKeon, not that great. I expected more from Marilu, but we'll see how she shapes up. I found Danielle a bit painful to watch.

My favorite of the night was Milo.

I think all contestants need a few more dances to weed out who is making progress, who really has a handle on dancing. Some do really well with certain types of dances which makes them seem “good" but they can't carry the momentum forward.

Is the show two nights all season?
