Hair Hair Hair - Another question

DoubleWhammy, that looks to me, though I'm not an expert, like the kind of Taxotere hair loss I've heard described by the folks on that topic. I would start with that group. I believe they are in the process of contacting the company and advocating for better knowledge. When the doctors say something is "rare", I usually figure it happens about 10% of the time (they like to downplay the non-life threatening SEs, as there are simply so many of them).
One choice I made a long time ago while my hair was coming in: I buzzed it. It looked cleaner, and more intentional. If I could have stood a wig, I would have gone that route, but I was hot flashing my brains out on chemo.

Here's a look at my "get up and go" look. This is how I wear my hair most of the time b/c I am so sick of the work it takes to straighten it. It's air dried with a Target elastic headband. Kind of like the ponytail I used to wear on bad hair days. (9.5 months PFC)

Saralmom I think your hair looks great. The waves are nice but I know if you're used to straight it can be a little weird.

Saralmom - I really like it! My hair was poker straight so I don't know how I would handle curls if they show up. To be honest, I'm a horribly lazy person when it come to my hair, so I would likely steal your idea and use a hairband. Wow, a hairband...how exciting would that be???0

i think bangs would be really exciting...you look so pretty sara

marjie, my hair was really straight before chemo too. And I was always lazy with it - I used to just blow it dry - I could be showered and ready to go in about 20 minutes. But with the straightening I need to set aside about 45 minutes! I hate it and I picture myself being lazy for most of the summer. Just not sure if the curly headband is okay for work yet, but when I convice myself of that, I will prob not do the whole straightening routine anymore - until it's longer maybe.
tracie - the only good thing about doing the straightening routine is that I get to have "sort of" bangs now and that feels good sometimes!

Sara you really are very pretty. I am doing the same kind of headband thing right now actually, only I don't have much bangs yet to push back and what i do have is very curly. I think if the headband as the substitue for the hats i was wearing although i did get a straw fedora and i have some cotton hats for summer, I don't like baseball caps on me. I hope when it gets a little longer the weight will weigh down the curl some. I like your analogy to the pony tail. I can't do anything to my hair yet to straighten it i think it's too short yet. I went to beauty brands and they used to have a really small flat iron by baby bliss that she said i could get online. I did buy some more nioxin but the kind of color treated hair now. I also got a smoothing cream from nioxin that helps with the pouf.
I have a fill today so I will take pics of that and my hair later.

Hello everyone!
I'm 9 weeks post-chemo...and finally my hair is fully back!
I have a full coverage of the head and is about 2-3 cm (1 inch) but now I have a big trouble... it's all spiky and without "shape" I look like if I had an electro-shock! hehehe
Shouldn't complain of something so silly I am very thankful of my hair growing back so fast, but I wish I could go out "commando" with this warm weather but hair looks really crazy!
Does anyone have some tips on how to give some "shape" to my crazy-spiky-hair.
Thanks a lot!

Joystars - WOW your hair is growing very fast, I'm jealous! I would go in to a salon and just get it cleaned up a bit and maybe they can show you some tricks to manage it. It really does it good to have those wispy chemo-ends trimmed off.
I'm not sure what my hair is doing yet - it isn't really getting longer as much as it's getting thicker or denser. It is definitely getting darker though with less grey so that's better!

I am 5 1/2 weeks post final chemo. I have gone from needing magification to see my new hair folicules to a very thin covering of fine, short, white fuzz. With good light I can now see with a regular mirror. How soon until this turns darker and heavier texture?? I look like a baby rat.

christine47 - it won't be long now. I was like that too and then it started to fill in more and more. Mine has stayed very soft, but it is no longer fluffy. Look up the thread a little and take a peek at Lago's link. She has put together a pictoral progression of her hair loss and regrowth that will make you feel better!!0

June 29th will be 11 months post chemo...here's my latest pics

Wow - looks great! Loving seeing another wonderful pic to give those of us in the initial regrowth modes hope!

looking good Lady M.
Here is my updated progress chart. I stopped using the Nioxin this past month and it does seem like the growth slowed. Back on it now so we shall see if it speeds up again.

Carrol I think the short dark hair with the curl looks so cute on you. Personally I like you better sans headband.
Wow Ladym you have a lot of hair! Is it back to it's old texture yet? It looks like it is.

Carrol, you look fabulous! I am at about 12 weeks, but look like you at 10 weeks. It is so nice to see how fast it starts to come in in later weeks. I agree with lago, you look great without the headband. Thanks for posting - it gives us all something to aspire to!

I finished Chemo late Nov 2010, and I look like Carrol"s 10 week photos. Very slow coming back and very patchy at first, too. A bit more on top and in front now, but initially it was so sparce.Very gray and back is so coarse while the top is as soft as that of a baby. Weird eh?
Oh well, it is at least coming back!
take good care,
Teklya

ladym - your hair growth is amazing. I don't think I'll be even close to that in 1.5 months! Very pretty. But you look like you have one of those faces that looked great with no hair too!
Carrol - your hair looks at least as long as mine, and you are 3 months behind me! Looks GREAT!

Teklya well your right it is growing so that is good. There are always going to be people whose heair grows faster and those whose grows slower. I felt like mine was so slow noen of us ever feel like it is fast enough. I do take biotin and I am back to using the Nixion shampoo, conditiner and scalp treatment.
Lago thanks i think this is pretty much the way my hair was it curls up a lot when it's short. I was looking at pics of myself when I was like 5 and my mom got me a pixie cut and it looks kind of similar.
AimeeMac I am glad that my pics helped you feel hopeful. This is a tough journey and getting everything back to normal helps to put it in the past. I do suggest to everyone to take pics even if you do not post them it helps to watch the progress once a month or so instead of staring in the mirror every day.
saralmom I think my hair is a bit shorter than yours it's just poufy lol. I matte it down with product to make it more spikey instead of round like an afro.

I'm 6 weeks PFC and have a nice full covering of dark hair now. It is so soft!!! I've worn a scarf this whole time, but it's been oppresively hot here. I don''t quite have the courage to go topless yet, but am hoping to do so when the students return in August. The eyebrows are coming back (slowly) and I can actually put mascara on my stubby new eyelashes.
I love seeing all of your pics. You are all absolutely lovely

Lago...it is A LOT thicker and curlier than my old hair, but it's an okay texture. I have to stretch it with the blowdryer and then flat iron it..I do that once a week and it stays (unless it rains of course)
Saralmom- Thanks for the compliments, but nope I didnt look good bald...lol Yes the hair growth has definatley picked up, I think since I stopped the Herceptin. I have used Nioxin for as long as I cant remember and even used it on my bald head through chemo...I swear by it.I am very lucky,,,and although I miss my long hair some days SO much, I can't complain...it's coming along nicely...hard to believe that July will be a year post chemo....you hair looks fantastic too.
Carrol2 I can't belive how much hair you have now....looks great...the headband is cute:)

I've got stubble going on now. It feels like Velcro. The hair I've had on my head since buzzing it had started to grow but now I'm losing it and the stubble has taken over. I will be glad when I'm over this stubble stage. It hurts when putting on wig or cap, the fabric or lace of the wig gets hung on the stubble and it hurts. But I am glad that I'm on the way to getting my hair back.

ladym13 please don't telll me my hair is going to grow even faster once herceptin stops. It's growing pretty fast now. 1/4"+ already an it isn't quite 4 weeks yet.
So my hair used to be really shiny. Now it is really dull. Anyone else? Anyone get their shine back?

Lago- it totally will...lmao! mine went crazy after I stopped the Herceptin...not that I'm complaining:)

Hi girls. It's been a while since I've been on. My hair is about 3+ inches long. I've had it done a few times. I'm getting it done tomorrow. I'm going to have it "stacked" in the back, so It can grow into a bob. I have bangs and they're almost to my eyebrows. Yeah!!!

Christine47Glad to hear you finally have some growth as we were on the same treatment and finished in the same week. I still have the white fuzz and it is not progressing much at all. I am 6 weeks PFC today. My growth is not even as much as Carrol's was at 4 weeks. The other ladies' growth and pics are very inspiring but it is depressing too as I am not progressing very fast.I hope growth speeds up for us both soon Christine47.PS I use Nioxin, Minoxidil and Vitamin B but they don't seem to be helping much at the moment!0

Actually my growth is mostly like SLCST12's on page 312.

KittyCat:
That's great news! I am so happy to hear your hair is moving right along! I haven't been to the TN thread in a while, you reminded me to pop in and say hello!Christine:
That's exactly where I am...newborn rat look. If i look at the right angle, in direct sunlight, I can *almost* see a bit of a 5:00 shadow... Post a pic if you feel comfortable; we can compare notes!Saralmom:
Gorgeous. Just gorgeousTammy:
That is such a great feeling isn't it? That' bit of stubble coming back! I'll be 6 wk PFC tomorrow. All:
I had to shave my legs yesterday (well, didn't have to, but sort of wanted to...) DH laughed at me and said, 'are you shaving the 2 hairs on your leg?'
Ha ha. Still no eyebrows (like, none.) they were thinning before, but now they are all gone. I draw them in daily with a good eyebrow pencil.0 -
slcst12 - I noticed that all the hair that I didn't really want (like legs, bikini area, etc) seems to grow at a ridiculously fast rate while all the hair you are waiting for (head, eyebrows, lashes) seems to take its sweet time. I was never any good at drawing eyebrows...it was pretty hit and miss so I finally just gave up, lol! Once they do decide to make a reappearance, they are pretty quick.0
