53.......I had skipped 3 years of mammo's because of a move to a new town and a new job and a "low risk" category. Turns out - after getting copies of my old mammo films (the first when I was 37) my right breast had calcifications from the get-go. I know calcifications are common - and they usually only worry when you have micro-calcifications - but I'm angry that the radiologists and my ob/gyn never ONCE said a word to me that something was showing up on all those old mammo's.........I never would have skipped three years of mammo's if they had given me reason to worry. I read online that radiologists are supposed to send you a letter in the mail explaining the results of your mammo's - this law was passed in the 90's - I NEVER received such a letter from those old radiologists - just a note from my ob/gyn that everything was "normal" come back next year. Sigh.............and reading about all these young women here getting BC - and mets - I feel so angry and frustrated with doctors and insurance companies!

Hi My name is Wendy and you've peaked my interest...

What exactly does it mean when you say bone mets have healed.

I just turned 40 dx with bc at 37. most recent ca27.29 tumor marker came in at 61 from 38 last time.onc ordered multiple scans and I am now waiting on results. so with 2 young children I am scared and noticing every pain.

Reading your post and others gave me hope that if I have to face an unpleasant result it is not doom.

So can you explain what is "healed" in reference to with bone mets.

Thank you so much...sending positive thoughts and strrength.

Suechenwenny...What was your stage?....I am surprised your onc would order scans with Ca27.29 still so low..Mine won't order them unless they are in the hundreds.......Hugs and wishes for clear scans.......Lucy

Holly the normal range for those markers is up to 38. Even though they don't work for many patients, if you do go above 38, most oncs order scans. I am surprised to hear your onc would wait for markers in the hundreds.

For all the moms who are BRCA positive, and wondering about their young daughters, there is amazing information at www.facingourrisk.org

Mammos are not the answer for young women. Dense breasts generally prevent mammos from working effectively on young women. BSE's every month two weeks after your period, and alternating an ultra sound and an MRI yearly is the safest way to go. I learned alot after being diagnosed at age 26, and knowing that 15,000 young women will get cancer in the US this year, I think every woman should be armed with knowledge.

There are several statistics that I think we will see adjusted over the next few years, one of which is the whole 5 year you're out of the woods theory, and that mammos should start at 35 instead of 40. I also agree with whoever above talked about BRCA 3 and 4 genes...and with the new statistics, I hope we see new drugs, and ACTUAL research being done for all of you guys with mets. It makes my blood boil to hear this early detection bullshit, and no where near enough money going to research advanced disease.

43 1st time stage 0, 45 2nd time stage 1  50 stage 3 3rd time 52 4th stage 4 no cure. Mets to the bone.   I do not have the gene and the first 3 cancers were different kinds no reacurrance but, the 4th one was a reacurrance of the 3rd.  I have had mascetomy and reconstruction.  Took tomoxifen and arimedex.  Not over weight and in good health.  I did everything right but it could not run away from it.

    Hi times3,

I was 47 at first diagnosis and have been living with it and mets for six plus years now.  I had my daughter tested (she was 24 at the time and she is BRCAII positive.  I cannot put into words enough how grateful I am to know now (sooner) rather than too late.  At this time she is planning to get propholactic surgery as soon possible after she has her babies.  My doctor also recommended she get mammos 10 years sooner than my onset but changed her mind once we knew we were both positive.  Now my daughter has had a baseline MRI digital mammo and she'll get them annually from now on.  Good luck.

I was 44 (I'm brca2+), my sister was 45 (not tested). My maternal grandmother died from mets. My maternal aunt has had it twice, plus thyroid CA. My mother got a pass because she had a prophy mast years ago before prophy masts were as 'common'. Oh, my maternal grandmother was dx before age 45 I think? It's scary to think one is walking around with a timebomb inside.....

I was 45. They say that Mammograms often don't show up cancers in younger women. My daughter always has an ultrsound as well but if there was any doubt I would pay for her to have a MRI. The specialist told me it was the only way for younger women because of the density of the tissues in the breast at that age.

    Hi Lucy,

My stage was 2b.  I am BRCA2 positive. They always told me they like the number to be under 40.  This is the first time it has gone over that.  I finished my chemo (4ac/4t(switched to abraxane) in Jan 2007.

    Thanks for the Hope,

    Wendy

I was 41 yo, my mom was dx at age 63 Stage 11a. I also had two maternal great-aunts (my grandmothers sisters) who both died because of ovarian cancer back in the 1960;s and 70's. They were in their early 50 years old (though its too bad we don't know more. Back in the day, they rarely talked about these "girl issues".)

I tested negative for BRAC1/2 but my genetic councilor and onco thinks the family history is there - there just isn't a gene identified to test yet.  I had my first mammo at 30, every two years when I felt there was enough evidence to push it. Just a mammo isn't the option either. It only picks up certain things, and certainly nothing for me because I had dense tissue breast. It was the Breast Ultra sound combined with the Mammo that convinced the radiologist that there was something there.

Both my mom and I are going to have our ovaries removed. Hers are just a liability at this point, me its a bit of a gamble, but I know I am done having kids so its better this way. LONGEVITY FOR BEN AND SYD is my top priority.

I was 44. My Mum died from uterus cancer. I scare for my daugthes too.

I had mastectomy, Chemo and going to have Herceptin for 1 year with Arimidex.

I saw some were with BC for more than 10 years, even up to 20. But it seems in many people BC progress quickly from stage I to IV or V just after few years.

I think this is good idea to have this kind of poll to know age, kind of BC, and treatments, progress...

These information would be very helpfull.

Good luck to all of us!
