30 min of runners yoga this morning and waiting for it to warm up into the teens before I head out for my long run of 8-9 miles today. This weather stinks! It's going to take some serious mind over matter to get out there today. I had thought about going to the arena to run indoors this morning but 72-81 laps sounds awful. And no way I can do the treadmi'll for so long either so stuck outside. A light wind so that will help. Looks to warm up into the 30s here this coming week which will be very welcome. Did a 40 min HIIT workout yesterday.
My treat after my run will be dinner and drinks with hubby and our good friends tonight. Heading out to our favorite restaurant downtown. Happy Saturday!

Been a while since I popped in here. Yesterday was day 8 from my most recent chemo & I went to the forest for an almost 5K walk. Very very very slowly but did it.
Chemo has been kicking my butt. The adriamycin is affecting my heart and making me feel all weak. My baseline resting HR is elevated by about 10-15 bpm all the time, and of course any exertion is pushing it high. During walks prior to chemo would usually be in the 80-90 range. Now I'm in 110-125 for what is really a pretty mild walk with stops for my dog to sniff etc. Sometimes in the days after chemo a shuffle to the bathroom puts my HR into cardio zone! I will ask my doctor about this at the next appointment because I'm not sure how I should be exercising when my HR is so wonky. Anyway - only one AC more to go, and then I switch to Taxol.
If anyone exercised during AC+T, I'd love to hear your experiences.
Ruth, so sorry for your loss. Staph is evil & we've run out of antibiotics for some of the strains. I really fear antibiotic resistance.cheers to everyone

Hi Moth....congrats on your run. Don't worry about "slow", your speed will come back.
To answer your question, I cycled through AC+T. Taxol was a lot easier. I discovered after my first AC infusion that my chest would seize up, and I would have a coughing fit. (I was on a group ride in the rain, and couldn't keep up. I asked to be taken back to my car, and then I started to get very cold and hypothermic. So I got back on to warm up, and discovered I was fine. Otherwise, I think I might have stopped then and there.) Then all would be fine for the rest of my ride. Once my lungs filled with oxygen, I would feel normal, and I slept a lot better. (Even if I was slow and couldn't do any real hills.)
Just after chemo, I would have a couple of days when I was seriously dragging, but would walk a minimum of one mile. I remember towards the end of AC when it was damp and miserable (January) and I was feeling a bit sorry for myself. Then I spied someone with a walker. I realized then that I was the lucky one, as I was still walking, albeit slowly, but this person needed a walker. And that I would recover, but unfortunately, the person with the walker was unlikely too.
That really put things into perspective. So did the time I was cycling in the rain, and I realized that even if I was going slowly, just being on a bicycle was better than 90% of people my age who didn't have the excuse of chemo!!!
All was much better with Taxol, and I was able to increase the length of my rides. What is really funny is that my friend Jim who made a point of riding with me, actually rode that winter, whereas he usually takes the winter off.
One very funny that happened was that during radiation, I was still wearing my wig under my helmet, and was on a long training ride and wearing cycling tights. I rounded a corner and a guy leaned out of his pick up and said "nice a**". Talk about a morale boost, and no, I didn't mind the catcall.
Good luck. The more you can keep moving, the easier things will be.
Speaking of cycling in the rain, it isn't any sunnier here today..... Good luck. - Claire

Hi Moth! I completed DD AC/T in Nov of last year. I ran and exercised thru most of it but by the end of those 8 treatments I really started sucking air! 😊And experienced shortness of breath like you described. I was having to alternate running and walking (run 3min, walk 5 min, repeat) and my pace was much much slower at that point. Instead of running as often I walked more and did more yoga and tried to keep up with my strength work. I did find recovery went better than I thought it would. I think about 3 wks post final chemo I ran a 5k with no walk breaks. Today I ran 8 miles and hope to run a half marathon this spring. I am 5 months post final chemo and my pace is getting faster but still slower than I was prior to chemo. Still dealing with some post chemo muscle fatigue but I am running and adding mileage each week. My MO has said he thinks the biggest reason I got thru chemo with little side effects and have recovered so well is because of my activity level (absolutely no nueropathy). So I do think its good to do what you can exercise wise while going thru treatment but some days a walk around the block after work was all i had the energy for and some days I did nothing.
Just got home from my 8 miles...decent pace and it ended up being a lovely sunny but cool run. 1 yr ago tomorrow I found my own lump. As my good friend described it "the day my world flipped upside down". Today I ran with a very grateful heart.

DH and I went for a 53 minute walk - sunny so that helps. I did one HIIT 4 minute period in there, but then remembered I was on pavement which hadn't been favorable to my back, so decided to just continue a long walk. Then I went to the new home improvement store that is two stories and got in another 4000 steps.
Moth, do what you can. Chemo totally kicked my butt. It was so bad I couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without stopping. But slowly your strength will come back, once you are done.

Hi All, we made it back before the next weather system comes in......way too long of a trip in a two day time frame!! We got to my brother's about 3:00 on Friday so got to spent some nice time with him & my SIL. The funeral was today. DH and his friend both went to college on Cross Country & Track scholarships. They met the first day of practice 40 some years ago and were the best of friends ever since (and could talk endless about who won which race, and whose shoe fell off at a crucial moment, etc. etc. kind of sweet). Our friend stayed passionately involved with running for many years (until his hips said 'no'), and participated in three Boston Marathons (for you runners, his best time was 2 hours 23 minutes). The funeral had a sort of 'running' theme; with a picture of him crossing the finish line in the 1986 Boston Marathon next to his urn, another picture of him in a race in the program with a Bible verse which includes the lines, "I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race.", and another "they will run and not be tired"; the speakers made running references too.....it was very, very sad but very meaningful and personal too.
DH called dibs on the treadmill when we got home, so I did an indoor walking DVD and some abs. We ate our way across 11/2 states..... I imagine the scale will reflect that fact tomorrow......
Moth, I did AC but not T. When I felt good enough I would walk like crazy; when I didn't, I'd set a timer and walk around and around the living/dining room until it went off. Just do what you can now, every little bit will help you bounce back faster once you are done. Hugs!

DD#1 and SIL leave tomorrow morning...DD#2 is here till Tuesday morning. Tomorrow she is having lunch with a gf...she is trying to see everyone before she leaves. We will spend some time tomorrow and Monday afternoon. I'm taking part of Monday off...We will do lunch then run errands...we need to go to Costco as well as get her a new phone. I need to buy the phone as it needs to be unlocked.
I need to get a new fitness tracker. I had a Fitbit Flex then last year got the Fitbit Alta. About a month ago, the band quit working on the Ulta so I was keeping it in my pocket....somehow I seemed to have lost it last week. Not sure if I want another Fitbit or a different brand......please chime in on what you use and why you chose the brand and/or model. Part of me says don't need it and part of me says it is a motivator.
Passover ended tonight....Two Entemens donuts, ice cream and wine....not the best for weight control but sure was good!!!!

I have been making sure I get more than 20,000 steps a day, stretching and lifting weights. The medication switch (Tamoxifen to Anastrozole) has been uneventful. The only thing I have noticed is my fingernails seem brittle. That could be this ridiculous weather to!
Ruth- so sorry for the loss of your DH friend. The service sounds very touching!
Keep moving ladies!

Hello everyone, well I'm off the exercise wagon again - I have been felled by the bug that has been going around, it hit me last Sunday basically I've been in bed most of the week just coughing my lungs out and honestly I felt like I did a million sit ups my stomach was so sore and I've got that dreaded codeine cough syrup which give me vivid dreams and boy have a been having doozies hopefully I'll be back at it again soon but I will be taking it easy. Funny thing is that I have a couple of neighbors and we rely on each other, well this week we were all down, my across the street neighbor had meniscus surgery on Wednesday and my next door neighbor called me Thursday needing me to mind her dog as her doctor was sending her to the ER as she was bleeding, turns out she has colitis and is now on a 30 day liquid diet the only solid thing she can eat is yogurt, very scary but she is home and we have a signal to check in on each other, as I can see her bathroom light and she can see my bedroom light.
Ruth I am so sorry about your DHs friend. Rder my onc told me that the best thing I could do for myself was to workout for 30 minutes each day. 2FUN okay I have serious dance envy, I LOVE Sh'bam I do it on my own using LMOD.
Hopefully will be back up on the wagon next week, till then take care everyone.0 -
Hbcheryl- feel better soon! I have heard other say that cough last for 3 weeks! How wonderful that you and your neighbors check on each other!

Rdeesides, for breast cancer the recommendations are for more exercise than the normal 150 minutes moderate intensity workout.
http://www.breastcancer.org/research-news/most-important-factors-to-reduce-recurrence-risk
*It can help to break up your exercise into 20- or 30-minute sessions that add up to about 4 hours per week. Walking is a great way to start. Maybe you walk 30 minutes before going to work and 20 minutes on your lunch break. You can add a few more minutes by parking farther away from your building or taking mass transit. Or you can make plans to walk with a friend after work -- you’re more likely to stick with exercise if someone else is counting on you. Plus, you can socialize at the same time.*
......
Moth, I had Taxotere and AC (TAC) simultaneously and still managed to walk up the hill and through the forest daily from my first infusion. I was in pain sometimes but would just take a rest when necessary. Slow is good, as Claire pointed out, certainly better than staying in bed. Like Runnermum, I also had no neuropathy, at least nothing lasting. Some temporary tingling.

<This Video is about exercise during chemotherapy and how it prevents muscle loss during treatment among other things.
Ruth what a fine tribute.
Finally made it to Zumba. Then mountain biking with DH for some 38 Kilometers

Just watch the video. Thank you Heidihill! I was fortunate that my medical team didn't discourage me from exercising. I will say that everyone was surprised at how my journey through chemo was compared to most patients. The video also supports my theory that cycling most likely saved my life, and may have been why it was contained within my breast and one gigantic lymph node.
I think that taking up running also made a difference as no real bone loss between years 1 and 5 of chemo, and that my bone density is still normal. Very important for someone who regularly lands on her butt.
Practicing what I preach, here is a picture from earlier today. Let's just say that my jacket is a marvel at keeping me warm and dry over the 20 miles. Muddy items are just finishing up in the wash. And yes, I relished that well-deserved hot chocolate! - Claire

Hello Ladies, greetings to all! I would like to join you.
My husband saw this article yesterday, and I want to share it with you. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/breast-cancer-patient... The takeaway is, "Higher muscle mass means better survival rates, regardless of a woman's age or cancer stage, the researchers found."
That's motivation enough for me to dust off the hand weights. I could not go out today, but I usually lap swim 3 or 4 times a week and walk on other days. I start radiation treatments in a week, and hope to keep up some exercise during and right after.
Hope everyone is having a lovely Sunday. Looking forward to chatting!

4.7 miles slow walk on a flat path near the ocean today on a beautiful clear, sunny day around 65!
There was one section I had to walk uphill the equivalent of one story, and had to stop a couple times. I see the cardiologist later this week
No way could I do what you are doing, Claire, am envious, have too many muscle problems unrelated to cancer.
Am doing better than my friend who was recently diagnosed and is on chemo for HER2+ BC, she can hardly leave the house, she is so tired, though her baseline was excellent health. She had a mastectomy three months ago.

Welcome Poliwogli!
Today I did a pilates DVD, some dancing with Marshall Fitness on UTube, and a little time on the treadmill.
Karen, I like my fitbit (I have an Alta right now). I don't need all the fancy stuff but it definitely it is gratifying when I go over my goal, and it motivates me to get moving when I don't feel like it (like today; I knew I needed to do some toning to finish off my weekly goal, but since I already made my self-imposed aerobics goal for the week, the only reason I did any moving around was to get those darn steps!)
Hope you are feeling better, Cheryl. Lots of crud is still going around. Blah!
I drank hot chocolate today as well, Claire. It was a cold, snowy, blowy day. Then I made beef stew for dinner.....another 'winter' food choice.
Heidi, that was the most amazing video. Thrilling, really. I am so glad that I went with my instinct to keep moving, keep pushing, when I was diagnosed. The advise at the time was to stay home, take it easy, limit activities, limit exposure to people blah, blah, blah, blah. All of which I ignored, and now I am even more glad that I did!!

Welcome poliwogi.
I am feeling so good being 3 weeks off letrozole. I got in 5 hrs of pretty intense exercise, and I slept all night long without pain. I'm tentative to start exemestane tomorrow. I don't want to go back to pain!
For cardiac health the recommendation is 60 min of moderate to vigorous exercise every day. That 7 hrs per week. That what I'm shooting for!
DS called from college. Not happy. Not making close frends. He had an amazing HS experience. He decided he's going to run a marathon in October. He runs a 5K in 20 minutes. Not fast, but persistent. Any helpful website out there to train for a marathon?
I told him he could come to Zumba with me and he laughed really loud!
I'm putting in 5 exercise classes into my calendar so I make sure I go ! Have a good week everyone. Keep moving even if it is slow!

Cheryl, feel better soon! My hubby had what sounds like the same crud, and it really did last for weeks! He is just now feeling himself. Thankfully, I never caught it.
Just have to echo what others have said about exercising during chemo. My MO recommended it and it really helped.
Now I am really working on getting back up to speed after the two replaced knees. Went to a minor league ball game today, and walked around the park several times. Did about 1.5 miles. Not too bad for less than two months after knee replacement but I want to do more. Going to up my game this coming week......

Heidi that was an awesome video!! Several things droive me to continue to run and exercise during my chemo treatments and one thing that breast cancer patient Natalie said hit home for me...a big reason was for my kids. They were used to seeing me throwing on my running shoes after work and going for a run, It was normal for me to leave for a couple hours on Sat morning to go out for a long run. It was my norm. I wanted them I was still the same, even when I wasnt. I will never forget my very first run about 5 days after my first chemo...I was running on our treadmill in our family room and our 14 yr old came down the stairs. He was headed to his room but stopped, looked at me and asked "you are running, do you feel ok?" When I replied that I felt great he smiled and said " cool". It made my day!
2run http://halhigdon.com and http://runnersworld.com both have training plans I have used ! Good luck to your son! I have ran 1 full marathon...it's hard but the reward is great!

Yesterday, I did my first long run in fifteen months—eight miles. I am so happy about that and feel like there’s a possibility that I can come back, maybe not to my former level, but at least something respectable for me. A concentrated effort on increasing mileage, laying off alcohol and sweets is finally paying off. Also dealing with an altitude increase. Well, whatever, running is my anti-depressant and I’m finally climbing out of that hole. I’ve been on anastrozole for five months now. Some SE’s but exercise has been key for controlling those. I’m about to start a year of Neratinib, which should be interesting.

Bareclaws, wonderful progression on your mileage and you will come back - well done! HeidiHill, thank you for the fantastic link - wow! So much I can share from it - thanks beauty! Cheryl, self care, do take good care as you are a very special to all of us and eek, first time teaching new release tonight! Runnersmum you are awesome. Claire, nothing gets you down. 2FUN, I relate as DH took our son back to uni on Friday and this first year is not all smooth sailing and I think some is just being 19.
Pink Pilates this morning and BB tonight.

Oh I'm so glad I came back to this thread to ask questions & got such great responses. I love that video! It got me motivated & I remembered I had several bookmarks on my computer about exercise for cancer survivors & read through those again for more info & inspiration.
I turned on our wii yesterday & played one of the sports games for about half an hour. My fitbit decided to give me credit for 11 min full cardio on an elliptical machine - I think I was actually doing wii canoeing lol
Here's to getting sweaty & out of breath0 -
Moth- I have a Wii and I have been thinking about "firing it up" to! You have motivated me!

About to step out of the car and into the cold for a 25 minute run before I have to pick up the DS. I'm so tired after a day's work with eighth graders. But here I go...looked here for inspiration and found it!0
-
Feeling tired today, but managed to do my swimming. When I'm tired, I tell myself to just do half my usual distance and do it slowly. I almost always perk up after the first 10 laps. Kind of a negative psychology.

Today I ran 3 miles in snow flurries, which cleared just as I finished. I love the short run the day after a long run. It always seem so easy.

thanks for all the inspiration everyone!
Did a 45 min Sh'bam class . the teacher is a really powerful positive dancer. I stood in front of her so I did not have to look at myself in the mirror, and I imagined I was her moving all strong and powerful!

Gorgeous afternoon in Denver. Left work at 2:00 to spend some time with my DD....2 laps around a great park - forget how many miles it is, at least 4 total....Great talking and mother/daughter time. Tonight is out with friends to say bye and she is back to Israel tomorrow morning. Still time for some hugs!!! I will miss her.

Good job everyone!!!
Today I shoveled 3 more inches of heavy, wet snow, got the income tax in the mail, took the puppies for a little walk, went to Zumba and Yoga.......so I'm feeling quite productive and quite pooped! We have more snow in the forecast, so everyone around here is VERY crabby!!
