Hi all, just passing through as haven't been here in many weeks. Still trying to get my old motivation, rainy weather not helping. Did pickleball today, about 5 games and wanted to get to the pool but rain kept threatening so that didn't happen. Oh well, tomorrow is another day. I know, need to make my goal to drop 10 lbs before Nashville, perhaps that will push me to try harder.
Hello to all who have joined and are working on a healthy lifestyle.
Night and have a great Memorial Day weekend my sculpted friends.

Hello all, I have lots of catching up to do but thought I'd jump back in. Went in a fabulous mini vacation up to Northern California and attended the wedding of one of my closest friends daughters. I was the brides mothers bridesmaid 39 years ago, it was a destination wedding on a working cattle ranch on the rugged coastline - the ocean in one side and a redwood forest on the other, lots of walking but a long drive there and back from the San Francisco area, got back late last Sunday night started my gym routine and then wham bent down to pick up a sock and did something wrong and threw my back out so I have been down for the count for a few days. Hope everyone is well, going to go back and read what I've missed.0

Friday - Nothing, zero, ziltch, nada. Got caught in a maelstrom of paperwork. I stapled things...does that count?
Much of the same today, I’m getting gym withdrawals
Octo - Nic pics! Nice knees! Amazing how exercise helps!
HbCheryl - Hiya! Sorry about your back, I raked for 3 minutes a few weeks back and messed my wrist up so badly! It’s killer when we put so much into our regimes and hurt ourselves by picking up a sock or rake! Your trip and the wedding sounds lovely.

2FUN, that's beautiful, love the gold reflection on the water!
Octogirl, great news about your knees. Lovely trail, wish we had something like that here in the city.
Ruthbru, that's a lot of planting! Is your garden in now? Or more to go? I was hoping for a big gardening day yesterday, but the temperature hit 92. It's raining today, so maybe tomorrow.
Instead, I did a little free weight routine yesterday. It's not my thing, but trying to get into it.

I did some yoga when I got up this morning. We finished up the initial yard work, drug out the patio furniture etc. Next I need to do half an hour of toning to meet my weekly 'quota.
Here's what I see when I come out the door of my fitness center.

Checking back in to say hello. My MIL passed away 4 weeks ago yesterday. The past month has been a blur of dealing with my emotions of watching her die, the paperwork, and clearing out her apartment. The dust is beginning to settle and I am starting to get some exercise again. Yesterday I made it to Zumba and took a walk outside as well as pulling out large bushes in 92 degree temps. Started couch to 5K this morning. It was 58 degrees. Crazy temp shifts.
We have 4 weeks of school left here. I am hoping for some spring temps.
Varga- I taught one student with Angelman’s syndrome when I taught kindergarten years ago. He was a sweetheart. Parenting a child with special needs can be so challenging but also so rewarding.

ginger, I'm so sorry for your loss! Hugs!

Ginger, so sorry about your MIL.
I am going to try to get in a little toning this a.m. The grandpuppies are coming over with DS for a picnic this afternoon, which will a good excuse for a walk after eating.
Happy Memorial Day; especially if you are, or love, a veteran.

Gorgeous photos.
Ginger, sorry about your MIL.
DH and I went for a walk at Lake Michigan yesterday to get relief from the 96 degree heat. It is always “cooler near the lake". I can't describe how refreshing it was to go from 96 to 82 with a nice fresh breeze. I didn't want to leave.

I am finally rested from an all-consuming month (or was that several months????) of work. Seven mile walk yesterday with a friend where we literally smelled the roses, and discovered a new fabulous place to swim.
Off in a bit to do the 7 Hills of Kirkland. (As a bit of trivia, Costco was initially headquartered in Kirkland WA, hence the brand name.) I will see how many I need to walk. I am doing the classic 40 mile route. Gorgeous day out so should be fun. - Claire

Ginger, was sad to read of your MIL's passing. Good that life changes have become more settled and able to take time for you. Mary, happy to read that life is shifting full time to the peace and quiet of the cabin. Your long-range plans are coming to fruition! Cheryl, hope you are feeling better back wise today. Runnermum, you rock running! Like the photos Ruth, Octogirl, TwoHobbie & 2FUN.
It's a 3 day weekend here called Bank Holiday Monday. Covered a Pilates & Stretch & Tone classes this morning and off early this evening for BodyBalance in Folkestone. Yesterday was tons of hedge trimming and strimming. We live in what is known as, "The Garden of England" and during these warmer months everything grows amazingly fast and strong, particularly weeds. Quick question, since bc diagnosis, do any of you now watch how much sun bathing you do..if any? Thanks and have a good start to the week everyone!

Beautiful pics! So nice seeing everyone’s world. The lilacs were stunning! Ginger, so sorry to read about your MIL, my condolences. Claire, thanks for the Kirkland info, had no idea. My DH is a Kirkland addict lol.
Well I finally got into gear today and did my first full workout without the wrist splint. Usual range of lifting but incorporated more upper body lifting without any pain, whoopie! 60 mins on weights and 30 on cardio. Managed to scratch out 10 pistol squats with bench assist. Wish my glutes luck tomorrow, I have a feeling I might need a butt splint!

Hi All!
Turbo Kick was so much fun today!! And, I got to go yesterday too!! And, Body Combat on Saturday. (But, now I'm finding that Turbo gives a MUCH better workout and is more fun!!)
Strategy for dealing with the late-comers-mirror-space hoggers - keep an eye on the door - and guard my space when people try to maneuver in front.
Been experimenting with the "Emoji Me" app that my DD showed me.

Dad was a very proud veteran of the S. Korean War. He served in the Canadian Armed Services. Found these pictures the other day. My parents went to a reunion in S. Korea and I knew that he met Queen Elizabeth II, but I hadn't seen the invitation. Found some great photos and momentos today, including both my parents birth certificates which I had seen before, but also the hospital certificate from Mom's birth. Going to take the old pictures and newspaper clippings and put in plastic protectors. Will work on doing it this summer. Dad is on the far right in the photo with QEII.

BTW - Egads - that's great work on your pistol squats!!! I've been practicing my knee-jump-to-high-kick (I don't know what it's called but it feels really good).

Very, very cool, Karen!! My dad was a World War II vet and stayed very involved his unit throughout his life. One the biggest thrills of my life was to accompany him (and 200 other area WWII veterans) on an Honor Flight to see their World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.

Lilac, about the sun. I tend to tan, not burn; so if I'm out for a shorter period of time, I don't worry it. If I am out longer, I use sunscreen religiously. I don't want to add any more wrinkles than I already have, increase the risk of skin cancer (although most of that damage was done years ago when we all tanned like crazy); and since I had 11 lymph nodes removed, I don't want to risk triggering lymphedema by stressing out that arm with a sunburn.
*edited to add that I get a spray tan for occasions when I want that 'sun kissed' look.

Managed all 7 HILLS today so basking, if ready for bed. This was after a shaky start where I needed some work on my back wheel and the flat fixed. All went well, but will be heading for the bike shop soon for more repairs. The bike mechanic did mention something about a "well used" bicycle!!! (This was a compliment.)
I wear long sleeved tops when cycling to protect my body, even in Washington State. I have never enjoyed sunbathing, but do like being outdoors. I find that a makeup base with a high SPF does the job quite nicely. Not quite as careful about my legs which are sporting a "cyclist's tan" at the moment.
Stumbling into my bed for an early night as have to face the week square on. Really needed some down time and am where I need to be with training for the Seattle-to-Portland.
Pasta with a saffron, tomato, and prawn sauce was just delish. Fortunately leftovers. Will be feasting the entire week. - Claire

Did another hike yesterday...went half way up the Mt Rose highway from Reno
to Tahoe but never went all the way to the lake as weather was nicer lower down. My new bionic knees did great with the elevation gain! Here are a few pics.

Ginger so sorry to hear of your MILs passing I know how hard these past months have been for you. Octo beautiful hiking venue and glad your bionics are keeping up with you. Great picture of your Dad and HRH Karen. LB I don't sunbathe like I used to but living in SoCal I'm always out in the sunshine, like Ruth said the damage was done years ago, but I slather on the sunscreen now and wear a hat.
Yesterday I did a Sprint filming, my back hurt when we crancked up the tension and were out if the saddle climbing but for everything else was okay, this morning went to a special 90 minute Body Combat class, my goodness the room was jam packed unfortunately I couldn't do it and left after 20 minutes it was way too much for my poor sore back so did some stretching and foam rolled, looks like the rest of my week will be all about the bike, I do feel it's getting better but not quickly enough to my liking.0 -
LB, I actually decided to do some sunbathing after BC after hearing so much about Vitamin D and cancer, and Vitamin D and tamoxifen effectiveness. I started to wonder if D supplements were really as effective as the sun. Then I also saw that sunbathing affects your immune system rather than just providing Vitamin D. So, I do some mild sunbathing - about 15 or 20 minutes each side once a week. Or if I'm out exercising, I'll put sunscreen on my face, neck chest and arms, which get too much exposure but not on my legs.
Karen what a treat to find! Cheryl, I hope your back heals up fast. Octo, so glad your knee is doing well that you can take those great hikes. How long would you say your recovery was? My husband needs a new knee but he is reluctant about the recovery period because someone told him it was year of pain. I know yours has not been that long.
I managed to get a horrible cold so I have to lay low today. In fact, I'm going back to sleep after being up all night. Happy Exercising to everyone else.

TwoHobbies, my personal opinion is that if someone had a year of pain after knee surgery, something went wrong, or they pushed it way too much. I can only go on my own experience but: I had both knees replaced: one in November last year, one in mid-February this year. I had some pain during physical therapy, but when I did, I slowed it way down (and I had a great therapist who agreed with that approach). In between the two surgeries, in early January, I traveled to Japan, where I walked a LOT (Japanese walk. Sometimes you have to walk a fourth of a mile or more just to get out of a subway station! and all those shrines and gardens. Loved it. ). Anyway, the knee that had been replaced didn't bother me much at all, but the other one (the one I had done when I got back) really hurt.
Now, 7 months after the first one, and 3.5 months after the second one was done, I have almost no pain. I feel like a new woman (which I am in a way!). What I DO have is swelling: it sometimes bothers me a little as it can interfere with my range of motion, doc tells me it may take a year to totally go away, but it gets better every day.
Hope this helps!

Beautiful pictures, Octo!
I went to Zumba this morning & Bone Builders. I am thinking of yoga tonight before some friends and I go to the movie Book Club (hopefully 'earning' enough calories for a bag of popcorn!).

Thanks, Octogirl. That's good news. I'm going to pass that info onto DH.

Ruth-Are you going to take it easy this summer? I get a kick out of reading your post on the other threads. You've been a busy woman lately. LOL

TwoHobbies, one more thought about the knees, and for the rest of you, about exercise. People who haven't seen me in a while keep telling me I look younger, and wonder if I have lost weight, or why I look so good....Some of them assume that it is because I retired in July, and no longer am stressed out about work. Well, I haven't lost any weight (unfortunately, though I hope this thread inspires me to change that), although I did gain almost an inch in height after the knees were replaced (because they also straightened them, I had been very knock-kneed my entire life) and that could make me look a little slimmer...
However, I don't think retirement had much to do with it: I am still doing consulting, and that is almost as stressful as my regular job was. Personally, I think what they are seeing is my face when I am free of pain. The past few years I was in almost constant pain from the knees (AIs really did them in, and they were bad before I went on the AIs!). That was real stress and it is almost gone now. Might give your hubby more to think about! and of course, without pain, I am moving more, which also makes me feel better, and I think makes me look better too!
So, of course, without pain, I have no excuse not to exercise daily! Today's exercise was walking, and then sorting junk/stuff for my planned move soon. Lots of lifting! Tomorrow is a swim day....

Eight straight days of rain and finally the sun came out today. I am tired of running in the rain. There were times it was raining so hard I was unable to see more than two feet in front of me. The past 8 days I have taken 2 days off from running. One day I had cramps in both feet and the second day I just didn't feel like running. I have a 10K in 2 weeks so I need to keep moving. My next 10K is the day after my 6th and final chemo. Round 5 has been cumulative and I have noticed a decrease in my energy level. Reading your posts keep me inspired and motivated.
