It's going to take awhile, edj.Scared

It got down into the 50s last night so I was able to turn off the AC, open the windows, and sleep in the delightful coolness. Today the high was 72 with a nice breeze; so after Zumba & a little yard work, we grabbed the dogs and went out to the lake. Fun! I'll go to Dance2fit and yoga tonight because tomorrow DH take off for Minnesota/Wisconsin for some family get-togethers. Tomorrow night we'll be at my brother's just outside of Minneapolis. Saturday we will visit an elderly aunt who isn't doing so well (and then go to a Twins game), Sunday/Monday we'll be in Wisconsin helping to celebrate with another aunt and uncle on their 63rd wedding anniversary. A fun story about them; they met at a church camp when they were 16, with it being love at first sight. After 4 years of dating, they were very ready to get married. But, in Wisconsin in those days, if a guy wanted to get married before he was 21, he'd need his parents to legally sign off on it (for girls, I believe it was 18). Well, my uncle was NOT going to get a permission slip from his mother to get married!!! So they waited until his 21st birthday, and the wedding was the next week!

My MIL fell this afternoon and broke her hip and cut her head open. 10 stitches in her head - and she is having a hip replacement tomorrow morning. Needless to say everyone is worried as she is 91+ years. Please keep her in your thoughts, prayers and good wishes. Thanks.

What a great thread - Yoga and walking kept me going through treatment and beyond. Now 10 yrs later, I am working on getting my right side strong and flexible with Pilates - so I can actually lift my arm above my shoulder - I didn't realize I would be working on this so long after dx. Today the dog and I will go for a walk in the nearby park hopefully to get our 10000 steps in and yoga tonight, pilates in am tomorrow.

Weights and core today. I also have a massage in a bit through the supportive services for oncology/breast cancer, then I see my OT and she can chide me for overdoing it w/ my arm.

Hi Edj3. Don't be so sure that you will be chided. My medical team was interested in what they could do to inspire more women to do the things I did throughout treatment.

The important point is that I kept my core strength and muscle tone. Sarcopenia (muscle wastage) is a major risk following breast cancer treatment, and not something you want. I went back to my weights (and everything else) as soon as I could after surgery.

BTW - I didn't ask my medical team for guidelines. I said "I plan to get back on my bicycle. Is there any reason I shouldn't do this?" They never said no to me. - Claire

We spent a lovely evening taking a dinner cruise on the St. Croix River with my brother and SIL. Lots of driving, no formal exercise, but still 10,000 steps just wandering around.

Just ran 7 miles this morning. The OT did scar massage yesterday on the sentinel node incision and that scar is CRANKY.

Claire_in_Seattle, my entire medical team knows how much I work out and how important it is to me, I did go on quite a bit with them b/c I needed them to understand that I wasn't going to be OK with picking up a 3 pound weight and calling it good.

However . . . I have a tendency to push too hard too soon or not pay attention to signals from my body, which is how I ended up running a couple of races on a fractured pelvis. I'm working hard to pay attention now, and since I do have some arm issues going on, I'm also doing my best to follow her (almost certainly) reasonable guidelines. But I chafe at those restrictions, I won't lie.

I used my hoe yesterday to chop at a 6 inch by two foot piece of grass by my garden. I have another two feet to chop out. I have not been cleared for upper body exercise yet, but just HAD to.

Picked back up with the exercise since we got rid of the nasty stretch of really hot and humid weather.

Along with a walk around my brother's very hilly town, we also walked across a pedestrian bridge across the river into Wisconsin and back yesterday morning. We went to a Minnesota Twins baseball game in the evening, which requires a lot of walking too. Now we are on to Wisconsin for the family reunion.

Heidi, congrats on your anniversaries and all good news! Thanks for sharing the mountain with us.

Ruth, love those stairs and messages. What a great idea.

I don't remember when I reported in last but I have been doing the same exercise-walking at the lake and walking the dog. Walked every day last week so I rested yesterday except for a very short dog walk and a trip to Costco. I was reading about micro workouts so I am now doing some strength and balance in daily life, ie squats while waiting for the microwave to finish, stand on one foot while boiling water, planks and weights during commercials.

Finished out the week with a 3 mile recovery run (very steamy, it was 78 at 5 AM plus massively humid) followed by core work. I tested my new hydration vest to see if it bothered me, especially my left breast, and it laid nice and tight. So that's 20 miles this week.

I travel Monday and will be doing two training runs in Waco TX where the low (I use the term loosely) will be almost exactly what it was here this AM but with even worse humidity. *cries* I get home at 12:15 AM Sat, and have an 8 mile run on tap. I expect that one will be less than pleasant what with no sleep and probably a little dehydrated too.

Update on my MIL - she is not doing well. She fell on Thursday and shattered her hip. They had to wait to do the surgery as she was on Plavix. Too much damage to do a total hip replacement so they put a rod in. The cellulitis that she had in the other leg has gotten worse - there is poor circulation in the leg and a possible blood clot. We are praying that they don't have to amputate the leg, but that is a real possibility. She is 91+ so everything is dangerous for her. My husband is on the way to Columbus to be with his Mom. I'm on stand-by based on what he finds out in the morning. Tomorrow is back to the new school year. I want to be with my husband and with my MIL, but its hard - so depending on how she is tomorrow morning, will determine if I get on a plane ASAP. Please keep my MIL in your thoughts, prayers, good wishes (whatever you believe) as well as my DH and me. My younger daughter is here visiting, but she told me tonight that if I need to be with daddy that I should go - that she is a big girl, she can cook and take care of herself and Mischa (our 10 1/2 year old St. Bernard) and not to worry. If my MIL is stable, DH will fly home on Friday morning - if not he will stay and I will go for few days.

Hope your MIL is better soon and that they don't have to amputate, Karen. I will pray she gets through it. Your daughter is wonderful to offer her support in this way.

Twohobbies, your microworkouts reminded me of the marathon runner mom who trains by running around the house or while waiting for her kids, No need for formal training sessions.

edj, love your dedication. I ran just 3.5K last week. This week I'll target 4K. Maybe I have to buy some new running shoes to motivate me. About the video, no, Zurich was not in sight. They might have been pointing at a peak and saying in dialect, that's the Santis.

    Lovely river cruise pic, Ruth.

Went biking with DH yesterday in gorgeous weather. Today is rainy so may go back to the gym or do some microworkouts. Last week I received a Fitbit Satellite Badge for 35,000 liftetime floors,

Oh Karen, sending hugs your way. I so hope your dear MIL can be treated successfully with the least extreme measures. So hard! Glad DD is around and can hold down the fort if necessary.

We had a lovely day yesterday and are now on our way home (an 8 hour drive).

Karen, my prayers for your MIL, and I hope she gets better. Having to take a few days off at this time of the year is somewhat better, if you have already had opportunities to do some of the routine paperwork. But maybe our prayers will be answered in the best possible way.

I did one hour, two hundred calories, and 7.5 miles on the recumbent bicycle this morning. I am going to start doing weight-work and aerobic work on alternate days, now that I got a foam cushion for the seat of the recumbent. I should get clearance for arm-work later this week.

Yeah Mommy. I always mark my first of the month weight on the calendar and set a goal for the month...even on an "non-perfect" month it keeps me honest.

    Good for you! TT

One of our members invited the Walking Women over for breakfast, so we started and ended the walk at her house.
