Yesterday I took down the Christmas decorations (dusting & vacuuming as I went). I walked with the Wednesday Women this morning, did a bunch of errands (we might get some of that snow too) and made some cookies for my neighbor whose mom just died. Tomorrow I have a haircut, and need to finish cleaning the house. I SHOULD be sorting through 'stuff'!

I can't say that I was disappointed to say good-bye to 2023. The highlight was the birth of my granddaughter who is now 7 1/2 months old. The rest of the year was not so great. Here's hoping that 2024 will be a year of good health.
We got home Monday around lunch time. From the time we left our daughter's apartment until we got to our house was about 26 hours travel. I did sleep on the flight to LAX from TLV, but sleep on planes is never good. I'm still tired 2 days later. It was an amazing trip. I wish we could have stayed longer, but something called work got in the way. I know, I've share some of the trip, but since I don't remember where I left off, I'll share the whole itinerary here. We arrive on Wednesday 12/20. Thursday we went south near the Gaza border to deliver life saving medical supplies to 3 different groups of soldiers from different bases. All the supplies were in Gaza that night and have already been used to save lives. While there we visited the Be'eri forest where the concert was held as well as one of the kibbutz that was hit hard. The devastation was horrific. Friday was a day in town and picking up food for Shabbat. Shabbat was R ad R and then after Shabbat we met with friends. Sunday we went to an army base near Jerusalem delivering the rest of the supplies that we brought. Monday through Thursday we packed beef jerky for soldiers, picked oranges (they were so sweet and juicy), made sandwiches for soldiers and packed dry goods for needy families. We got together we friends most nights and Shabbat we had a mini Denver Shabbaton with friends who live there. The rest of us were visiting. Sunday the 31st, our daughter started classes again (2.5 months late) and we spent the day in Tel Aviv and then had dinner with her before heading to the airport. It was a short trip - only 11 nights. Looking forward to spending more time in the summer. I posted pictures on fb for those who want to check them out.
Back to work yesterday. This week and next then I'm off for a month. Surgery is on the 16 and I'm taking off till February 20th. I probably don't need that much time to recover, but I decided that I'm coming first. Restrictions go to February 13th so I figured I'd take the rest of the week off and we would go see our granddaughter. After taking the month off, I'll still have over 400 hours sick time. I submitted paperwork to go back February 5th, but I need to redo my paperwork for HR.

Welcome home, Karen! The trip looks and sounds amazing, and very busy. I would be shocked if you said you weren't tired!!! I'm very glad that you are taking the month off to recover from your upcoming surgery, and that you plan to squeeze in a trip to see your granddaughter! She is at an age where she'll change so much & so quickly that you won't want to let too much time pass between visits!

started riding my stationary bicycle. My pulmonologist wants me to get up to walking 6 minutes without stopping. After getting malnourished on piqray it’s been a chore just riding 5 minutes.
Happy New Years

Karen: Such a service-filled and amazing trip! I hope you can get lots of rest between now and the 16th.
al36526: Welcome! So sorry that you became malnourished. Hope you get stronger and stronger every day and get to your pulmonologist's goal for you.
Didn't get to the kitchen closet today. Will try again tomorrow. Walked this afternoon. A bit windy at times.

Welcome, al36526! Glad you are starting on the road back to fitness. One step (or pedal) at a time!

Don’t know how much exercise I’m gonna get today. Woke up to the arthritis flaring in my left foot from the storm coming!

Ouch! We have having freezing mist, which will be followed by snow. Mother Nature's good mood is over!!!
I did an indoor walking DVD & some abs this morning.

Ruth - ouch your weather sounds dreadful.
It's been a short work week, yet it seems long!
Can I brag? My husband was interviewed on a podcast and we have an article and photo on the front page of the IJN, the local Jewish newspaper. If anyone would like to hear the post or read the article, please message me. The trip was amazing and so meaningful. There have been many Denver people traveling to Israel to volunteer in a variety of capacities as I'm sure throughout the country.
Sunday I'm going to try to cook up a couple batches of soup - split pea with barley and carrots and onions, and mushroom barley with chicken to put in the freezer. We are going to the mountains next week-end so I'm going to cook a head on Sunday and each night one thing - chicken schnitzel, either potato kugel or noodle kugel, deli roll and challah so I have in the freezer after surgery. My DH will take care of the cooking, cleaning and grocery shopping till I'm up to it. We will be in the mountains Friday to Monday (MLK week-end) and then surgery on Tuesday the 16th. I'm not sure if I'm nervous or not about the surgery but I'm concerned about the recovery. I'm glad I'm taking the 5 weeks off works. I still haven't heard from HR so I need to call them Monday. I originally was going to go back to work on Feb 5 but extended it to the 20th, so I will need a new letter from the doctors office. I also need to ask about driving after surgery - how long I need to wait - I'm guessing a week or 2. Also I want to know if I can fly 4 week post surgery so we can go see our granddaughter I keep putting off calling the doctor, but I best do that Monday.
The weather is turning cold for the next few days, but not much snow in the forecast for Denver.
Have a great Friday night and Saturday.

Karen, I would love to hear or read your husband's interview! Also, please send me some of the mushroom/barley/ chicken soup! 😃

M0mmy: Hope your arthritis has eased up for you.
Karen: I would like to hear the podcast and read the article featuring your dh. Your soups and other food sound delicious. How nice that you will be going to the mountains right before your surgery.
Ruth: We are expecting snow and then turning into rain tomorrow. I'll be staying inside.
Walked with a friend this afternoon.

I went to Yoga and am now walking around the track.

Wonder - message me your email address and I'll send you the pdf.
Ruth - stay warm and safe
It's cold this morning and light snow, but not as bad as back east. Thankfully my commute is 5 minutes.
Hope I can get a walk in at lunch. I plan to wear my long heavy down coat. I layer at work as the temp varies room to room.
Going to be a busy week to get caught up and get everything done before I go on 5 week FMLA. I'm starting to worry about the surgery and recovery. It is at least a 2 hour surgery. Surgery is at 12:30 and I have to be at the hospital at 10:30 so a long morning of fasting. I hope the weather is not too bitter cold so I can get a long walk. Need something to occupy my time and mind. DH is also worried about the surgery but more so the recovery. I've been googling parathyroidectomy and it says a benefit is less fatigue so I sure hope I fall into that category. I just don't have the stamina I had a year ago. I did some cooking yesterday and not what I planned to do and I was spent! So hoping tonight and tomorrow night, I can cook one thing to get my list done.
Weather is getting colder throughout the week. We are planning on going to the mountains this week-end for R and R and hiking. Not sure how much hiking we'll get in as the weather is going to be bitter cold and snow.
Stay safe and stay warm. Have a good Monday.

Karen, I have your email, so I believe you have mine. Send me the PDF too, please. I think waiting for surgery is the worst! Too much time for all the 'what if this happens'. Once it's over, you just deal with whatever is going on.
I walked & went to Yoga yesterday. My class was canceled this morning, so I met up with a friend & walked again. I will probably go to Pound tonight. The news said that we are the only state that is NOT in a weather advisory today!!! I better take advantage of it and get some errands done this afternoon!

Ruth - I do have your email. I'll send it to you shortly.
Today, I wimped out and didn't walk outside at lunch, but walked the hall upstairs and down a few times. DH and I walked when I got home and we will walk after dinner. I'll be putting my snow pants on and winter boots. Tomorrow, it will be in the low 40s and then getting colder and colder throughout the week. Right now windchill is 9 F. We are going to the mountains and it will be subzero at night and the mountains are supposed to be cold. It will be cold hiking - we will probably do a couple 1 hour hikes. Usually we do 2 - 3 hour hikes.
I doubt after a week that I'm still jet lagged, but at work by 2:30 I was wiped out. I made breaded "fried" in the oven tilapia for dinner and also made chicken schnitzl, which is the same way I make the fish to put away for Friday night dinner. That did me in. Hopefully, tomorrow I can make the mushroom barley soup I want to put in the freezer.
HR still hasn't approved my FMLA. I emailed the gal who is in charge of my case and she is out of the office till next Monday but in her away message she gave another email for urgent matters. I submitted my request a month ago. I wrote the surgeon's office asking if I should get a new return to work letter now since I extended my time off or wait till the post office visit. I also asked about flying one month post surgery.
My BIL had a TIA this past week-end and has a blockage in the artery at the back of his head that goes to the brain. He's already on blood thinners so not much to do. They neurologist said he will continue to have TIAs and eventually it will lead to a stroke. Neurologist says this is common with heart disease. BIL had quintuple bypass at age 47 which was 24 years ago. My late FIL also had these same issues but much younger as he only lived to 62. Needless to say my DH is a little concerned both for his brother but also down the road for him. DH had his quintuple bypass at 64 so much late in life so hoping he will not have to deal with these issues. Our poor kids really got lousy genes. At least all three of them are proactive with their health.
Stay warm.

I just started weight bearing exercises, to help prevent further bone loss, with hand weights and also doing squats and the elliptical. Feeling really good about myself now and keeps my mind from going down that rabbit hole of worry. I began the name brand Arimidex and so far no side effects like I had with the generic. I take it every other day until my body gets use to it.

Welcome, pinkrules!
Zumba & Yoga for me tonight.

Thank you, Ruthbru!

Pinkrules: Welcome! I was taking Arimidex when the generic became available for the first time. I was so concerned about taking the generic that I decided to pay the difference so I could continue the brand drug. Sorry to hear that you had problems with the generic. Hope the Arimidex continues to be good for you!
Ruth: We were one of the many states with weather advisories. Hard to believe your state wasn't.
Karen: I sent you a message with my email. I'm so sorry about your bil. I'm sure you and your dh are very concerned.
Walked yesterday. Today was a horrible weather day. Severe thunderstorms, flooding, and tornado watch. Luckily no tornado but there has been lots of flooding around. I packed up a few valuables and brought them down to the basement just in case. At one point the storm was really bad, the weathermen said get to your safe spot so dh and I went to the basement. Luckily we didn't have to stay long. I get so shaken up during storms!

Alice, I got your message and put your email address in my cell phone. I'll probably send it tomorrow.
HR still hasn't approved my FMLA nor has anyone responded to my emails. I finally found a form that needs to be completed by my surgeon. I scanned it to his office after work. If someone from HR/LOA would have followed up with me I could have had done this before winter break. I submitted my request for FMLA 12/08. I texted a friend all stressed and she said don't stress too much about it as they can back date stuff and then said, it's not like they can tell me not to have surgery! I'm so annoyed with HR/LOA.
I made mushroom barley soup tonight - it just needs to simmer for an hour and then I can put it in the fridge. I started too late at 8. I should have started right after dinner before we went for a walk and I showered. I was tired before, but even more tired now. Also feel like I'm fighting off a cold, or it's my sinuses acting up.
My left shoulder blade has been bothering me. Acetaminophen doesn't do anything for the pain but I'm not supposed to take ibuprofen but I broke down and took 2 and it helped.
It was 3F this morning when I left at 7am for work. I think it got up to near 40. 40 again tomorrow then 20 on Thursday. going to be sub zero in the mountains at night this week-end. Hope the sun is out during the day as then it won't feel as cold. It will just feel good to get some R and R.

Mushroom barley soup sounds so delicious! I dusted off my old Vitamix and now make a yummy veggie smoothie every day. I tell you, I feel so much better physically, have more energy. Here's what I put in it... organic carrots, celery, an apple and a few tablespoons of water. I recently added organic kale.

Thank you Wonderland for the warm welcome.! I'm doing great on the name brand Arimidex thankfully. No side effects at all but I did experience in the beginning two or three itsy bitsy tiny hot flashes when laying in bed and that's all. LOL I'm 68 so it was an odd feeling but reassured me Arimidex was working even when taking it every other day.

PS. Thinking about buying a treadmill now that the cold winter weather is here! I'm excited. Walking while watching TV is my plan.

Karen, I also am sorry about BIL. Those darn genes! Very frustrating about HR! A person has enough to deal with without having to fight with incompetent paper pushers. We are getting really cold this weekend too. Maybe you will just have to snuggle up and read in the mountains!
Wonderland, I was talking to my North Carolina sister when the storms were breaking out. We had to cut our conversation short because she was also heading to the basement.
Pink, a treadmill is a good option for indoor winter walking. We had one for many years (when it died we didn't buy a new one, because a wonderful community fitness center had gotten built about 3 blocks from our house which has all the equipment, a walking track, classes & a pool.
Here's the Wednesday Walking Women (Pink, 12 years ago a group of retired teachers to decided to walk on Wednesday mornings & then go out to breakfast….the group has been meeting & growing ever since). We like to eat, so we have to exercise!

A beautiful group of women! The photo actually made me misty eyed! What a lovely inspiring tradition. Thank you for sharing, Ruthbru.

Ruth - your WWW keeps growing. Have you been retired 12 years? You retired young though I know you subbed for several years.
Thankfully, my shoulder hasn't been as sore today - I thinks it's chairs without good support. I need to remember to have hubby put Volteran cream on after I shower.
Pink - I'm thinking of getting one of those pads - a treadmill that doesn't have arms so doesn't take up much room. But then I really do prefer walking outside. If I buy one, it will be because I woke up one day and just buy it!!
We walked when I got home from work at 3:15, then I made the potato kugel. It was way less work than the soup and also I wasn't as nearly tired. I made two 8 X 8 pans and will freeze both. I will take one with us on Friday to go with chicken schnitzl. Monday, when we get home, I will make noodle kugel to freeze. I also have two different soups for the freezer - at least 3 different containers serving 2 - split pea and barley and mushroom barley with chicken. The mushroom barley can be a meal by itself. We both love hearty soup in the cold weather. Everything else my dh can cook. He is a good cook, but I tend to do most of it as I like cooking. But I'm going to be a good patient.
My surgeon's office is great. I sent them the form this afternoon and they completed it. I submitted it to HR. I'm being a pain with HR writing comments. I told them starting the 16th I will not be checking work emails and that if they needed me they needed to send it to my home email. Restrictions are no lifting more than 10 pounds, no strenuous activity, no long sitting or standing and no kneeling or bending over.
The weather is turning bitter cold and snow in Denver. 20's tomorrow in Denver and then into single digits over the weekend. Lows will be below zero. Guessing at least 10-15 degrees colder in Frisco, CO. We are still going to go up late morning Friday. We'll keep hikes short but I need a change of pace - especially since I'll be in the house for an extended period.
Making tacos for dinner tonight. It's really not much work. So best get busy.

Karen, I retired 11 years ago after I saw how much fun I was missing! I did sub until the pandemic. I was suppose to spend the week in my favorite 7th grade American History class when they shut everything down. By the time things were back to normal, I was out of the mood to be on anyone else's schedule (although I still miss the kids & the school atmosphere).
Two of the walkers today are visitors from Australia….which is a long story!
All this talk of soup is making me so hungry that I have decided to make some tomorrow!

Karen: Goodness, I hope HR gets on the ball and approves your FMLA. Glad your shoulder feels better. This weekend sounds like snuggling weather. Have fun!
Pink: Watching tv while exercising on a tm makes the time go by fast. Let us know if/when you get one.
Ruth: Another awesome WWW picture!
Walked today. I waited until the wind calmed down.

Hope you have a nice weekend, Karen & that the temperatures aren't as cold as they are here, where you can get frostbite in 10 minutes.
I went to Pound this morning. Then I came home, and as promised made soup (Cheesy Taco Turkey & Bean Soup…yum). I will now go to Dance2fit, clean up & go to an event at the Arts Center. If I already didn't have a ticket, I'd be very tempted to stay home!
