Speaking of Jillian Michaels, I did her 30 day shred workout yesterday. Don't know much else about her though.

Badger, hope you'll soon be good as new.   Sorry for all that bad news, Ruth.

Ruth, I'm sorry to read of what you are facing.

Well, this is a down day for me gym wise and I'm off to take back the xbox headset for my 13 year old boy, one more time ~ sigh.

    Thanks, girls.

Along with all the other benefits, I think exercise is a good way to keep one grounded when other things aren't so easy.

Yikes Ruth, that must add a lot of stress.  I agree with you-- exercise is grounding.  Always calms me down.  Or maybe it just tires me out enough that I don't have the energy to worry.

Forgot to update yesterday.  Short walk (30 minutes) with the hubby then used my hand weights for shoulders and arms.

I think both Ann.  Certainly, I sleep better, and that is wonderful for perspective.  Plus, I feel better and more in control.

So works in good and bad times.

Last clear wonderful day before we get some much-needed rain.  So need to get out there.

I swam today for the first time in 20 years. After dd's birth, my abdomen bulged oddly, so I could not bring myself to wear a swim suit. I tried to complain to doctors, but they always told me it was normal after having a baby. It sure didn't feel or look normal.

It turned out that it was from having my bladder and uterus glued together and glued to my abdominal wall by scar tissue from a badly done C-section. My lovely Dr. Geek ( our nick name for him) cleaned it all up very carefully when he did my hyster recently. So now I can swim again (and I don't have chronic abdominal pain anymore either ). It is pretty cool.

Ruth, so sorry:(. Sending you a big hug. At school today so no exercise, but will hot my two hour jivamukti yoga class after morning session tomorrow which frankly is such a challenge it will make up for today.

Did 45 mins of Leslie Sansone, walked 4 miles!

11 miles on the bike, this time I got to the Cedar River trail. Much, much better than a rail yard! Although the Cedar River trail is an old rail-to-trail. Started out at Landsberg, next time I'll go north to Renton and do some of that end.

I can't get myself to the 20 mile mark! Any tips? Claire?

Worked at school for 3 hours this morning, then DH & I delivered Meals on Wheels, had lunch with DS & his girlfriend, went and saw my dad, finally had a chance to exercise. It was super windy so I walked back and forth, back and forth in the trees by my house for over an hour & did 30 minutes FIRM Rock Solid Abs.

    Hi Nibbana,

I did the Interurban from just south of 405 up to the casino in Tukwila, and then down to Pacific, stopping for a burger.  Gorged with blackberries on the way back.  I needed miles, so didn't mind the lack of scenery.  Total of 33 miles.  I use that ride for conditioning.  Boring but effective.

More fun rides than either that or the Cedar River are the one along the Green River Road.  Start at Kent and go the back ride on the east side of the river, making a right turn into Auburn.  Then, another immediate left turn which takes you out under Route 18.  You can either go left up the hill to Black Diamond (the route I am not doing) or stay in the valley all the way up to Flaming Geyser park.  Just gorgeous.

Cascade is doing the Kent to Black Diamond ride tomorrow....two speeds.  But Allyson Welch does a really fast Steady.  I am doing the ride around Lake Sammamish as just don't have it for the hill up to Black Diamond.

The other one I just love is Fall City to Carnation via the back roads.  Then either the loop around Carnation Farms Road, or up and back on the Tolt River Road.  Either one gives >30 miles, and neither is difficult.  The Tilth ride is next Saturday, but I think I am doing the lower Lake Washington Loop.

One reason to do group rides is that you learn the good routes (plus microbreweries and bakeries).  I need to do the Magnolia Loop, but don't seem to get there.  Perhaps in two weeks after the Brain Cancer Walk.  I will need some real exercise after that, and I can do the loop from my house.  A 270 degree view of the Puget Sound and Cascades on a clear day.  Just breathtaking.  I walk the miserable hills up into Discovery Park.

I haven't mentioned the Foothills Trail from East Puyallup to South Prairie.  There are a couple of espresso places in South Prairie to fortify you for the trip back.

One thing you might get is a King County Trail Map.  Really helpful in covering the major ones.  Just forgot that you can cycle from Kent to Alki, via the Interurban, Green River, and Duwamish Trails.  Lots of not great scenery, but Alki more than makes up for that.  I think about 20 miles each way.

As for more distance, you just have to do more time on the bike.  Plus stuff like checking tire inflation and padded cycling bottoms.  I train for events.  Believe me, I wouldn't have done much at all today if not for the 60 miler next Sunday.  Plus hills.

Plus, an energy snack.  I don't really need anything for 20 miles, but I do for anything longer.  Good luck! - Claire

(BTW - my friend Allyson made her way back from congestive heart failure and credits cycling for saving her life.  She also did the ride to Vancouver BC.)

    Claire,

It's not that I don't know where to bike. I have a King County bike map on my desk, plus books for the area. It's just that I want to breakthrough the 20 mile mark. A usual ride is 12 miles or so, longest has been 16. I think I get this fear I'll get far out like in Carnation, then won't have the energy to get back! D'oh! Having a big, heavy mountain bike doesn't help I guess. I really need a road bike.  One bike can't do every function.

I ought to take the mountain bike out to some real woods like the Carbon River trail and not worry about big road miles until I can get a proper road bike.

I have an old Motobecane touring bike that I got for $200 at a thrift store in Colorado 30 years ago.  That was a lot of money back then but well worth it.  I have such fond memories of rides and adventures with friends, thanks for bringing some back.

Busy day but took the time for a gentle walk in the afternoon sun.

2.75 km = 1.71 miles.  Have a good evening my Sculpted Sisters!

Sorry Nibbana.... I got to that later in the post.  I have two bicycles, but usually ride my road bike and not my hybrid (which I use on gravel, as a spare, and for guests).  Yes, a heavy mountain bike is a slow go on roads.  Do check tire pressure though.  Low tire pressure will really slow things down.

Snacks are the really helpful item in getting past fear.  I always carry Cliff Shot Blocks and GU Gel with me.  Plus Larabars, or the new ones I don't remember the name of (fruit and nut combo).  Do you have water with you?

Then, there is the reward system.  I like a good pastry place.  When going through chemo, I would stop at Ivar's Fish Bar on the way back from Alki.  I didn't let myself eat blackberries today until on the way back.

If you are hiking at >6000', you should have the cardio capacity to do 20 miles at sea level.

One final thing.  Has your bike been to the shop lately?  You have NO IDEA how much easier mine is to ride after a tune-up.

    Good luck! - Claire

Great weekend in windy Wellington, watching the ABs beat the Pumas (Rugby)

Walked 10.5km on Saturday and 6km on Sunday, we had gale force winds so walking against the wind was extra hard, but great excercise never the less

A glorious morning - crystal clear sky, perfect temp - been lazy with exercising the past few days so it felt good to get in a 50 minute trail run, getting further this time.   Still can't believe that I'm a runner - ?

ruth  ((hugs))   That's a lot to deal with.

hbcheryl  I've scheduled BL on the DVR, looking forward to the new season.  Don't watch a lot of US TV, but this is one show that I schedule and make the effort to watch.   It's good that Jillian will be back, IMHO - the tennis pro was okay, but I think Jillian is more interesting, with that evil glint in her eye!   heidihill  Was the shred workout tough?   LilacBlue  Hope that Xbox headset is fixed.

DH's birthday is tomorrow - we celebrate tonight by grilling out and dining al fresco.  DD is making cupcakes - yum!

Feeling that endorphin rush!  TRAM flap was 8 weeks ago tomorrow. Just came in from a 5 mile run at a decent pace and I feel great! Now I will slowly start adding more miles, but I really feel like a runner again.  Now off to the gym to do some (not so heavy) lifting.

Have a great day, all!  :>)

Joy, there are three levels in the 30 day shred and each has two versions - easy and hard. I just did level 1 and followed the hard version, except for abs. I hate ab workouts. I lean on a bosu ball instead of reclining fully so I don't have to get up so far. The plan is to slowly progress on the ab part so I can do the new offering at my gym of "CX WORX." Glad to hear you're a runner now! I will have to get back into trying to get there too.

It will be fun to have Jillian back on BL.  The tennis pro was a complete bust, I think.  I got the impression she had no previous experience as a personal trainer, and just relied on stuff that worked for her, rather than being able to figure out what worked for her clients.  Jillian, on the other hand knows EXACTLY how to push the contestant's buttons to get them going.

3 mile run this morning - finally a cool morning!!  I'm with you, Joy - can't believe I'm a runner!  Cool

Leaving in a few minutes for the Nats game, so I'll get a Nats Walk in.  It's supposed to be a beautiful day - crisp and clear with highs only in the high 70's.

    Congrats, Mary on reaching runnerhood!

Saw a video of BL on youtube. Boy, Jillian can be nasty. Not sure I could stomach that. Did Level 2 of 30 day shred. That was much harder than Level 1. I could barely make the full rep count.

Heidi you will love CX your middle will tremble and tremble it really is an offshoot of my very fave Les Mills program Body Vive but for some reason they can't get Vive off the ground in the US, I think they marketed it incorrectly when it first came here - it was an "old lady" class and that's when I first went into the group fitness room but CX has so many of the same moves only taken to the next level.

No formal exercise for me today but I am just about to drive up to LA and hang with an old friend who I was a bridesmaid for 30+ years ago, we are going to Venice and Santa Monica so we'll do loads of walking, talking and eatingSealed

Ok, everybody in this thread is a witness. In the next several weeks, I am going to ride my bike 20 miles. I"ll pack up a full lunch, heck, may even pack the Jetboil for tea on the trail.  I'll just pedal out 10 miles, and if I want to see home again, I have to pedal 10 miles back. The Cedar River will be good for that.

I went to my two hour intensive jivakmukti yoga class today- first time back since the ooph. We did alot of upper body work. I lost track of the chaturungas and head stands. We also did forearms stands off the wall with backbends which was crazy! I was most excited because I got into a yoga pose today that I have been trying for three years to master, and for some reason it just happened today- the side crow. Looks like this. Photo: Taking a quick break from my studies this weekend, I sulked off to yoga class exahausted. 30 minutes later I was energized and I did THIS - side crow, a pose I have been trying to get into for 3 years!!! Such a special yoga moment for me. Thank you to my awesome teacher!! I alsmost had it prior to my diagnosis and then after my BMX thought there was no way my upper body would ever be strong enough again. Yoga has been such a gift of healing and strength for me. Though I do varied exercise, its my love and what my body likes. Sort of like Claire and her love of cycling, or any of our girls that are runners. It was a good day today. Major yoga moment felt awesome.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!!! Heidi- love the challenge of the JM workouts. She drives me a little batty, but her programs are solid and they work!
