Just scrolled through all the topics and really didn't find a TEXAS thread.....I know Texas is big, but starting up a Texas thread may could make some of us feel more connected in a sense, being from the same state ??

I live in the Houston area.

    Hi Ladies,

Thanks to all of you for sharing your locations.   I must admit that I am still a bit shocked that a TEXAS thread hasn't had more response.   Looks like there are many of us from the Houston area.  Anyone have any ideas on how to get together?

Maybe we could start here by telling a bit about ourselves?

I'm Dawn and I live in Atascocita / Kingwood area.  I am single with grown children and have 4 beautiful grandchildren.  I work approx. 45 hrs per week.  I have only lived here for 3 years.  Much of my time here has been spent working ( 1st two years was spent working 60+ hrs) therefore I really have not experienced many of the things that this area has to offer.   I have somewhat thrown myself into work as I have experienced empty nest syndrome in the past few years.   I guess I have somewhat found that I kinda feel " no longer needed"? .....aahhh, the joys of empty nest syndrome.  I have finally slowed down my work load and am now seeking to find more quality of life. ...... well, in the midst of that , this cancer diagnosis came along so once again I was slowed down .. after work all I felt like doing was resting.  I am nearing the end of my treatment and am hoping to regain my QOL in the soon near future.  I want to learn to live more, laugh more, stop & smell the roses more.....I was dx March '09 and have since completed chemo & surgery and will be going for rad simulation Oct. 6 with my first session to begin on the Oct. 12th.  I WILL regain my life.  I gained some weight while on steroids with the chemo and am also now trying to line out my journey of losing it and getting more fit.  Ok.....who's next ???

Feel free to connect with me on Facebook, but please indicate whom you are as I may not recognize your user name.

    Hello Sunris,

No, I haven't been NED since my 2005 diagnosis.  I had a recurrence in 2008.  Same breast, same type.  I am 60 and I did not choose to do chemo or rads.  So far, all my routine scans have come back clear.  I have scans and a mamo every six months.  You sound like a really busy lady!  I know there are a lot more Texas ladies out there who haven't posted yet.

I am in the Metroplex...just south of Ft. Worth in Burleson.  We moved here in 2006 from N. Cali.  I grew up near the Zoo in FW but lived for 20+ years in N. Cali after a time in Alaska, so it was a huge change for me and an even bigger one for my family.

There are a lot of texas ladies on these boards, esp in the Metroplex. I am sure we will be hearing from them too!

Hi y'all, I'm in San Antonio, and hope to find some others to connect with.  Seems like a lot of people in Houston and Dallas.

I moved here in 1990 from Philadelphia PA when I started college.  At this point, I've lived in TX longer than I lived in PA, so can I call myself a Texan now? Tongue out

ReneeJean, nice to see you here!  I was wondering where Burleson was.

    Everyone have a great evening!

    Peace...

Hi from Fort Worth. I was diagnosed in April 2009. Had a double MX in June and I'm scheduled for reconstruction Oct. 9.  Good idea for a Texas thread. I always run into a lot of Texans whereever I go.

    Hello Ladies,

I grew up in Fort Worth and now live in the Crowley/Burleson area.  I'm 34 years old and have an 11 year old daughter and 9 year old son.  I work full-time and spend lots of time at football practice/games with my son and basketball with my daughter.  I'm also in school full-time trying to get my Masters degree.  I was diagnosed this August, had a lumpectomy on 9/8 with no node involvement and clear margins.  I'm now awaiting results from my oncotype test to see if I need chemo, if not then I will be starting rads late this month. I have been a frequent visitor of this site for a while but this is my first time to post.  I am excited to connect with my fellow Texans!

    1.   So, where is everyone's favorite place to visit in our own state?

We love to head to San Antonio for a short weekend....or S. Padre for a very long one (that 12 hour drive is a killer).  We hope to explore the Big Bend region this next spring.

    2.  And what is cool/unique  about where you live in Texas?

The metroplex is huge and offers something for everyone.  You can catch a rodeo or go to one of the best art museums in the world---all within walking distance of each other!  Cowboy boots with $5000 suits on men, women in full length mink coats (only in winter) walking next to women in dusters....all attending the same event.  The Ft. Worth Zoo is the best.  We have major league football, baseball and hockey!   And the best part....you can be in the country in less than 20 miles.  We live very rurally but very close to the city...I love that about here!   I used to have to drive 50 miles to get to the 'city' in Cali...I am 5 from Burleson which has everything I need and 20 miles from FW where I work and shop for things I can't  find locally.  What I don't like is the weather most of the year.....LOL.  Miss Cali weather!

    Hi everyone,

I am in McKinney, a bit north of Dallas.  They say I was born in Oklahoma but my family moved here before I was six months old so I have always been a Texan in my mind. Wink

     In response to ReneeJean's questions:

     1.  My favorite place to visit in Texas is Austin.  I love how the hippies are right next to the politicians and the surrounding country side is awesome for motorcycle rides.

    2. I can't think of anything very unique about McKinney other than I can grow different plants here than I could in Richardson where I grew up because it is just far enough north to be in a different hardiness zone.  It's a nice place to live and someday we will be big enough for an actual fabric store!

I'm in FAR North Texas, in a suburb of Gainesville (right on the border of Oklahoma). I'm 43 and have been diagnosed for less than 2 weeks.  First appt. with oncologist in Denton tomorrow...

From the reaction of most around me, I shouldn't be expressing any negativity as I will most likely ruin the night tonight...excuse me?!  I have cancer!

How are all our Texas women?  Anyone grown webs between their toes yet?  I don't think any part of Texas has been dry lately......  We had over 4 inches at our house in the last 24 hours!  And it is CHILLY tonight.  Put the flannel sheets and comforter on the bed today.  Probably the earliest I have ever done that, but I refuse to turn the heater on in October...LOL.

Hope all is well with everyone. Stay dry and warm.  Hugs.

Another Texas lady here. I am in SE Texas, about 50 miles west of Houston. I am retired now, becoming a caregiver of an elderly mother and substitue in a few area schools. I was diagnosed 3 years ago, right after I retired, had a mrm, but because of tiny tumors, didn't qualify for chemo, although now, it would be different. I am taking Femara, and have two more years to go on it. I am married, have three daughters, two sons-in law, and one grandson who is 16. PLUS, almost more furkids than you can shake a stick at!!

Renee, in our area, we've been jealous of your rains, but did receive 2 inches today. Water everywhere! Loving this cooler weather.

    Hello Fellow Texans

I have been reading and posting some since July 09, but never got to look around the whole site until tonite (can't sleep), so I thought I'd post here too. I live in a small town claiming to be located on the Heart of Texas, population 5523.

We retired here in 2004, and have really enjoyed the hill county and the rural living. Little did we worry about ever needing a doctor or specialist, we were gonna play.

Anyway decided to travel to DFW area for surgery, and now travel to San Angelo for radiation, will soon be done with that, and hope to get back to some kind of normal, living and enjoying being exactly where we chose to be.  San Antonio and South Padre Island are my two favorite places to visit in Texas, I like warm or hot weather better than cold, snow and ice, so I am in the right place finally.

Jennifer, I noticed you are taking femara, how are you doing with that may I ask ?  I tend to get all the side effects of all the meds I have ever been on, lucky me, and femara seems to be in my future.

    Thanks

    Dsgirl,

Femara started out pretty strong, but as the months go by, things did level off. The most annoying was the thinned hair, but I guess if that's all that happens, then I'm lucky. I have had some joint pain, but nothing that Tylenol can't handle. I have high cholesterol, but that could have happened before bc. I got the joy of experiencing hot flashes again on this drug, but nothing I really needed help for. They have subsided for the most part...once in awhile one errupts.

I've done fine with it, and I'm sure you will, too!

    Jennifer

    Hello Texas ladies,

Anyone else have snow today ?    Wow, that was a wakeup call, looked pretty but I really don't like cold weather and am glad it's already melted.
